MONSTER LOBSTER - From market to Lobster Hatchery for Conservation!!

  • Anyone following our channel may know of PINCHEY THANOS. A giant lobster we found whilst coastal foraging in early 2020. We had wanted to donate him to the Lobster Hatchery to aid in the conservation of the local Lobster population. Covid restrictions meant that we could not do that so when we received a donation to our channel I decided we should do something good with the money. We had a brilliant visit to a local shellfish merchant showing wonderful healthy lobsters, Crawfish/crayfish, Scallops and Oysters and then rescued a Monster Lobster from the cook pot and donated him to the lobster hatchery in Padstow. A fascinating visit where we learn about the lifecycle of the lobster and about the conservation efforts being made in Cornwall. Many thanks to Mark, Chris and Ben for their help and I hope you all enjoy joining us.
Here is the link to Falcatch. If you enjoy great quality shellfish or are interested in trying shellfish for the first time I can think of nowhere better to get it. falcatch.net
Here is the link to the Lobster Hatchery in Padstow. It truly is an incredible place and if you are in the Padstow area it is definitely worth a visit. You could even adopt your own baby lobster via their website. www.nationallobsterhatchery.c...

John, have you seen the 2 part programme on BBC about Simon Reeve in Cornwall? We had it recorded and have just watched part 2 - he visits the Cornwall Lobster hatchery and goes out to release some little Lobsters! Great programmes - if you haven't seen them, try to catch them on the BBC iPlayer. 👍👍

Poor Lobster; he was probably starving just before you arrived... on his last leg and jettisoned the claw before realizing it was going to be saved and given food to eat. Yeah, I'm the guy that loves sea food, but each time I see a Lobster tank, I end up eating butter-garlic shrimp instead. ; )

Thank you. I keep a 1.5lb male Maine Lobster as a pet, and he is amazing. These creatures are very intelligent. His awareness and manipulation of his environment, and his use of tools (including me), as well as his cooperative effort in helping me keep his tank clean, are startling. He hands me - directly - things he wants removed from his tank. If I make any changes to his tank - move anything - he will put it back where it was as soon as I close the lid. It's very much his tank. He can be very aggressive at times, but all of his aggression is defensive. He has tankmates of hermit and side-walker crabs, and he goes out of his way to not harm them. Just amazing.

I remember seeing massive indoor stone tanks in the 70's, down in Cadgwith cove and the floor of them being covered with huge those crawfish. They were being held ready to go abroad for sale, via Newlyn. My uncle enquired with the local fisherman if they were sustainable and they thought they were at the time. They then disappeared faster than a barrel of free beer. It is mad that they are still being caught commercially. I really hope they do get the chance to make a full recovery.

Difficult to know what to say without sounding patronising, but definitely one of your best.
As an angler I like your fishing videos - especially solitary fishing. As a family man I like your togetherness with wife and child. As someone who enjoys food I like your “catch and cook” videos. I think I particularly like this one about breeding lobsters because I am a farmer who has bred a range of animals in several countries (including fish to eat at present) and I consider what is done at Padstow is farming - they are after all breeding live beings to move on to somewhere that can grow them out to reach edible size. The fact that is done in the wild is immaterial because in reality it is no different to a farmer in the hills who breeds lambs or calves that are then moved elsewhere to be reared to killing size.
