  • Today I join Mikey on the Commercial Fishing Vessel Julie Girl offshore from the coast of Cornwall. I am spending a day in the life of a Monkfish fisherman. Monkfish is another name for Anglerfish. These are a deepwater species of fish that lives on the seabed luring in and ambushing its prey. We work his commercial nets, then prep, clean and land the catch. Mikey sells much of his catch direct through his fb group - groups/27525...
    If you want to buy fresh local and sustainably caught fish straight from the fisherman be sure to give him a message.

      The real disgusting part is the seals. His hauls this last time were completely destroyed. Not eaten entirely, just bitten and mangled so they couldn’t be sold. Worthless. So 4 days solid graft for barely covering costs.

      @Rose.Of.Hizaki Před rokem +1

      @@TheFishLocker Never mind heart breaking. Absolutely soul crushing! 😂I would have thought he would have kept the seal mangled ones and sold them on to crab boats to use as bait. Same goes for your cuttlefish video. Even if its dead it can still be sold and used for shore fishing or to bait a pot.

    Incredibly efficient ( through damn hard work ) method of fishing, having no by- catch is phenomenal ! Utilising the richness of the sea is shorely ( ha-ha ) the way to keep sustainable food coming to our tables. Hunting , gathering and fishing are only achievable with a great understanding of nature, most 'Farming' methods seem to be purely exploitative, not to mention insanely destructive. Excellent John!! Your last few uploads have opened my eyes to the commercial side of life on the water. His catch looked okay, although it would be interesting to know what he got for it? I heard him say £30 for one Monk-fish? So before fuel costs he's making £1k-£2k per day with all the extras? Not bad for a one man act.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před rokem

      Not quite. Like I explained also he can only work one week in 2. You are right 30 monks like this might fetch £900. So with everything else it’s £1k. But that’s halved by only working 1 week every 2 and then there are boat costs and fuel and nets etc.

      A lovely, meaty & delicious tasting fish eaten as either fillets or cut across the bone into steaks. They used to be known as 'mock scampi' as they have that same lobster-like texture & taste but I don't think that's allowed these days.
