- Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Whelk fisherman. We work their commercial whelk pots and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of whelks and also the seasons and importance for the local community.

Great video. That one fella throwing the hook in such a confined space did well. That crew has a very efficient rhythm and way about doing their business. I gotta say, your way of editing, narration, etc., is excellent, and is maybe the most important factor of why I watch, other than the cool content itself. I agree with you that dawn barely breaking is a great time of day. An example of what I mean by your excellent videos is like when you take the time to move the view to what you are talking about AND leaning over the side with the cam later to show another example. Well done. (Are those snails used at restaurants as escargot?) That's all one big longgg line of bait traps with and anchor on each end? You aren't kidding about keeping the line untangled and orderly. I'm sure that has been a hard lesson learned on multiple occasions in the past for some greenhorn. That body of water must really have a great deal of snails on the bottom. How long do those traps sit out before they haul them in again?
Thank you very much Benny. I am really pleased to hear you say that. I do truly hope that people find these videos interesting and educational. These boys graft very harm and one thing that did stand out to me is the harmony in which they work. Brilliant team to spend your time with. Have a great day Benny and take care. 😊👍🏻🐚
I would just add that escargot are land snails. I hope that helps
Escargot is the French word for snail. The type found in restaurants under that name is the edible land snail.
You gave the perfect description of a great video Benny! There is no way I could have said it better, so I'm not going to try. Everything Benny said @The Fish Locker great video!
@@rhino5419 It does help actually...Thanks.
This is so interesting John, such teamwork and skill from the lads. Great to see sustainable fishing with the use of the baits. Thanks so much for sharing.
The harmony and teamwork really stood out to me. Great group of lads to spend time with. 😊👍🏻
John - your videos and those of EIS Alaska to me, epitomise the best kind of sustainable fishing, presented in an interesting, personable manner with no Hollywooding and no silly music.
Thank you Colin. I try my best to maintain the same values as when we started. Simple, honest and original content. That’s it. No wooping and high fiving. Just simple and honest.
One is impressed by how hard the fishermen work.
Fisherthem! 😀
Let’s not have any of that nonsense here Michael.
Commercial fishing is a hard, dangerous and physical job. I hope this series of videos goes some way to teaching people about a life few get to experience. 😉👍🏻🐚
@@TheFishLocker Sorry...But it was funny 😉
The fish shop they landed their catch to is well worth a visit. Always a good showing of locally fished species supporting our local fleet
I agree. I have linked it in the video description.
I imagine your idea is to show people what the commercial fisherman actually do out at sea, as in what they catch and how they catch it, it was my job for 16 years so its nice your highlighting these guys who work our coasts.
That is exactly what I hope to do. To help to educate people about a world that is sadly taken for granted and that few people get to experience.
Fabulous to see how they work together. Also ya man do'nt waffle, says just what's needed to be said.
Simple, honest and no B/S. Just like our content. 😉
That's a tidy boat, nice to see being looked after a good scrub down after a day's graft on the seas
A clean ship is a happy ship. 😉🤣
So impressive Cleaning down Keeping the work area safe The way everyone pulls together Exhausting just watching it It’s easy to forget how food gets to our tables Respect to all of them (I bet you slept well that night) 😊
I am glad that transfers across in the video Robert as it is something I hoped to highlight.
This is going to be a nice good early morning. My favorite time of the day.
😉👍🏻🐚
A well organised, disciplined & effective crew with a knowledgeable skipper (how old is a whelk?). Every man in a lifejacket & a good clean down at the end shows a pride in their work. Well done all of you.
I am glad you picked up on all of that Ashley as they are all things that stood out to me too.
Once again John, you never fail to impress, yet another informative and educational insight into a piece of fishing that aot of people would never get to see.
Along with your personal, boat, pots and beach, this fishing channel never ceases to keep us entertained and educated.
Keep up the Great work.❤
Thank you very much. I hope that people find this series of videos interesting and educational. Helping to shed some light onto a life that few get to experience. 😊👍🏻🐚
Thank John for another brilliant video about another part of commercial fishing I knew nothing about, and thank you Scott, Kier, and Billy for allowing John to share what you do with his People.
Thank you Jim.
They say a skill is the same task repeated over and over until it is mastered, I don't think I would manage one shift. We'll done, great video.
Haha. These lads were a pleasure to spend time with. Really positive group. 👍🏻
thanks for the video John! This one seems like more work than fun, but still interesting and educational.
Teamwork is the name of the game.
John. I am 3mins in and... What an operation!!! 12mins in now and I am blown away. What a 'well-oiled machine'! Respects to you John. Superb video John. Thank you and all those aboard for yet another brilliant education.
Thank you Mike. It speaks wonders for the crew that I could step in on a system that they are already used to working together. A real great crew.
After a tough day at the care home I work at, nothing better than another brill video from the fish locker to watch 👍🏻👍🏻 cheers John.
Thank you for the compassion and work that you do.
Nice one John
Thanks mate.
Man, I would love a job like this. Hands on, a clear goal and working out at sea. Oh well. The office awaits tomorrow. :)
Make a life that you don’t need a holiday from. 😉
Another great video John really enjoy seeing how the nation's chach is court.
And then lads earned every penny. Keep bringing them it certainly opens your eyes to a fisherman life
Thank you Christopher. Please if you feel that any of your friends would enjoy this series. Share the videos on to them. 😊👍🏻
Another cracking up load mate...😊
Cheers bud. Glad you enjoyed it. Got my Tescos tubs in the end. 😉
John loved this one too ❤
Thanks
Thank you.
Really enjoying the commercial series. I like how you get in on the action also. It's a nice compliment to your own fishing content.
Thank you. I am not here as a spectator I want to pull my weight. 🤣
That was fantastic to watch. Cheers lads and safe sailing! A very well oiled ship indeed!
One thing that stood out to me was the harmony in which they worked.
What a series this is, loving every one of these trips out, such an education, thanks to all involved in making this video, appreciate it, all the best
Thank you very much mate. 😊👍🏻🐚
All the best from Sunderland John
Thanks mate, all the best bud. 👍🏻🐚
I did this out of Wells in Norfolk, caused me carpol tunnel within a weeks. Hats off to these lads that make a career out of it. Very had work
We used traditional crab pots
.. they were very heavy, this seems a much better idea
It’s hard work isn’t it.
That was a slick system they have got going on that boat for loading and unloading the pots !! Sweet loved the video 👍
Fantastic boat and crew. 👌🏻🐚
Hard working lads! After watching this I'm going to make a point of asking my local fishmonger if they can get me some whelks. I've only ever had them from the seafood stall with vinegar and pepper. I reckon they'd be delicious roasted in some wild garlic butter.
Done right they are very good.
great series this tagalong with the commercial boys. Thank you for bringing us along.
My pleasure David, I hope that people find these videos both interesting and educational. 😊🐚
i love a whelk but i can't remember the last time i had one...great that there's a market in asia for them...the efficiency of their work routine is something else 🤌 thanks for showing us how hard these guys work for their living.
One thing that stood out to me was the harmony in which the crew works. Hard graft and everyone helping each other out. These guys were a great crew to work with. 😊👍🏻🐚
I'm loving these day in the life videos ❤
Thank you. I am glad to hear it. 😊🐚
Love these in-depth videos plus they support fisherman !
Thank you very much. I hope people find this series of videos not only interesting but also educational. 😊👍🏻🐚
A Big Thank You to all the hard working fishermen and ladies who go out on the ocean so I can enjoy fresh fish and shellfish.
They go unnoticed and unappreciated by so many
What a fascinating insight into a food source caught off our coastline you don't think about how they do it. Interesting to see what they use and what happens to most of the catch
Thank you Debra, I am glad you enjoyed the video.
I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love fresh boiled whelks with a bit salt, pepper and vinegar. It's easy to forget what some people have to do to put simple food like this on your table. Another great video John, thanks again mate.
Thank you William. I hope this series of videos sheds a light on a world very few people understand or experience. 😊🐚
Thank you for the take along, good work men. Blessings
It is our pleasure.
Interesting to watch the process. Very informative. Miss your fishing videos!
Thank you very much. 👍🏻🐚
More respect for commercial fishermen watching your videos
I had hoped that would be a byproduct of these videos. 😊💙
Brilliant video thanks for that Mr John, my favourite sea snail we used to dive to get them back home. Seing them how to catch it here are very interesting. Thank you..
My pleasure sir.
Amazing. I love these life of a commercial fisherman episodes! This catamaran fishing vessel is amazing too. It looks so efficient! Thanks for taking us along TFL!
Thank you very much. This was a great boat and crew to work with.
Keep learning new stuff I didn’t know before. Thanks.
Every day is a school day. 😉👍🏻
Another great video! Must try this one... Great Portuguese recipe called "Caldeirada" - dogfish family fish (patarroxa)
Thank you Jose.
Again! Another awesome educational video! Thanks John! Oh and hubbys tshirts arrived yesterday! LOVE the quality !
Excellent. 👌🏻👍🏻
I have tried many times to buy whelks in Manchester ! ! Fresh whelks are impossible to buy ! Frozen whelk meat is vile ! When I travel to France Boulot and alioi are a delight.
If more people asked for them more fish mongers would stock them I guess. 😊🤷🏻♂️🐚
I have asked two local fishmongers to check at the fish market, Welks are unavailable! I enjoy them so much I have tried all avenues to find then. I really enjoy your videos, thanks.
@@ianleonard2983 - I have put a link in the video description to the fish merchant who Scott lands to. You may be able to order from him directly?
Might have been "great fun" John but I was knackered just watching you mate. Brilliant video as usual.
Haha. Commercial fishing is hard graft mate.
Another really interesting video . Thanks for showing us this side of sea fishing.
It is my pleasure. 👍🏻🐚
love the commercial fishing series.
Thank you.
no one should ever complain about the price of fish especially if they see these videos , another great vid mate nice one
I hope this series of videos goes some way to helping educate folks to that effect.
Thanks! I like this commercial fishing series...
Thank you Peter. 😊👍🏻🐚
Good on ye, on so many levels.
Good on ye for asking the challenging questions. No blame on our man there. "He's just trying to make a living". Education, education, education! Bring it! 👍
That’s it mate. These guys work hard in a challenging and dangerous job. One that is sadly under appreciated
I love buckies/whelks. Thanks guys,
My pleasure bud.
This very interesting and cool. It’s always cool to see how much can be done on a relatively small boat.
These boys really do graft hard don’t they. 👍🏻🐚
My thanks to Scott , Billy, Kier and yourself for the video, the best part is when the pots launch themselves back on the sands.
I enjoy watching that. Very soothing.
That was absolutely amazing. Thank you John & crew. Youse were like a wee conveyor belt. 👍
One thing that stands out to me is the harmony they work in. Hard graft and dangerous. These guys were a great team to work with. 😊🐚

Haha. They aren’t for everyone.
"Doesn't matter where I am...still my favorite time of day." I say the same thing when I see that you've posted another fantastic video!! Thanks again for the education and adventure John!! Wonderful stuff! Dig, DmGrk
It is my pleasure. Have a wonderful day and take care.
It is great to watch you pitch in while filming such awesome content John. Day boats need to be supported for local jobs and sustainability.
I wasn’t there as a spectator mate. I prefer to get stuck in and pull my weight 😊👍🏻🐚
Thank you John 👍🏻
My pleasure Pete.
Really enjoy this type of video, makes you appreciate all the work that goes into something we take for granted: food on our plates.
Thank you very much mate. I do hope that people find these videos interesting and educational. 😊🐚
Very enjoyable & interesting videos. Thanks John👍
Thank you Stephen. 👍🏻
So interesting, thank you John, and thank you guys.
It is our pleasure Jan.

It is my pleasure Alex. 😊👍🏻🐚
That's a first for me, never seen Whelk fishing before, i don't mind the odd pot of Whelks, i'm enjoying this commercial fishing series, take care John and see i'll you in the next one 👍
Thanks Mark.
Seeing the Sun come up, out at sea is a super special time regardless of the conditions!
I agree.
I tried whelk for the first time in a restaurant in Paris... a whole platter of different kinds... they were surprisingly good
Done properly they are very good.
Really enjoying this series, the weather seems to like you ✌️😁
Thankyou. I hope that people not only find these videos interesting but also educational. 😊🐚
Wish I knew you were here in Eastbourne, cos I would have loved to met you and maybe brought you a pint..😄🍺.... thumbs up John..Del
I was in and out mate, busy busy busy this time of year.
Really interesting watch John , thank you.
My pleasure Phil.
Super interesting...thank you for sharing the experience!
It is my pleasure. 😉👍🏻
When I was a boy back in the 1950s, two sorts of cheaper fish were sold in fishmongers and chippies as 'rock salmon' - one was dogfish and the other was coli.
In he fishmongers people bought coli for their cats.
Yep
@@TheFishLocker In those days chippies sold three types of fish - plaice, cod and 'rock'. Today it seems to be only cod (or in Scotland, haddock).
Our traditional Saturday tea was either kippers or smoked haddock, with hot buttered crumpets, (food was still rationed).
Lucky cats! Coley otherwise Coalfish or Saithe is a member of the cod family and quite tasty. My local convenience store used to sell oblong blocks of it, which I had with frozen bubble and squeak!
/@@stevebarlow3154 In 1960, when I worked in a Macfisheries during my summer vacation from college, Coli was 1/8 a pound, cod 2/6, haddock 3/-, whole plaice 4/6, fillets 6/-.
The commercial fishing videos are by far my favorite! Love to see them!
Thanks Rob, where I can I will do more. 😊👍🏻
Wicked never knew about that type of shell fish collecting, was quite interesting. Great team work & at least you helped out, brilliant mate. Love your video's, well done.
I did what I could but I wasn’t part of the normal crew so didn’t have a dedicated role. One thing that stood out to me is the harmony in which they all worked. Good hard graft. The boys were a great bunch of lads to spend the day with. 😊👍🏻🐚
@@TheFishLocker At least you lent a hand, instead of being a loose end. Sure they appreciate the help..
Hi John that was a good work out for you those sacks must have been 60 or 70 lb a piece interesting video first time I ever seen how whelks are caught
40-45kg a piece.
Really interesting vlog that, lot of hard work 👍🏻🐌
Thank you very much.
Takes me back to working on a prawn boat on the Clyde when on leave from the Army with my best pal fae school.
Tidy boat that 👍🏼
Brilliant working boat.
You can't beat a nice bowl of whelks...👍
I wouldn’t go that far. 🤣
That was an incredible video, very informative and beautiful vidiograpgphy!
Thank you Fran, I really appreciate that. 😊🐚👍🏻
On Portland, the fishermen used to land 'Dogwhelks', which were Whelk shells, inhabited by Hermit Crabs. Absolutely fantastic bait, and inside every shell, behind the Crab there was a Ragworm cleaning house.
Dogwhelks are different. What you are referring to is hermit crabs.
@@TheFishLocker Yeah, they were Hermit Crabs. Maybe they were in Dogwhelk shells, but they were great bait. Thinking about it, they were probably the discard from the pots, because no-one wants to eat Hermit Crabs. 🤔
Thanks, thoroughly enjoyed this one again!
Glad you enjoyed the video Matt. I hope this series of videos goes some way to shedding a light on a hard working industry that is often taken for granted.
Very efficient fishing and also hard work. Everyone working as hard as eachother. Brilliant all round
One thing that stands out to me is the harmony they work in. Hard graft and dangerous. These guys were a great team to work with. 😊🐚
This commercial series is great! As a former Commercial Fisheries Observer in the states, it's really interesting to see how fishing practices in your neck of the woods are both similar and different. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you. I do hope that people find these videos interesting and informative. It is a world that very few people get to experience. 😊👍🏻🐚
I replied under Benny, so I hope you see that too. Great video! Those Whelks are so different than what I find on the coast of North Carolina...although, I think they are found in Maine, maybe? Looked like a LOT of heavy lifting and more hard work. These gentlemen have such coordination it's could be termed a ballet, the most difficult of all. Thank you again for taking us with you, and yes...very interesting! Wishing you all a wonderful week!
Thank you Julianne I will go and look for that comment. One thing that stood out to me was the harmony in which the crew works. Hard graft and everyone helping each other out. These guys were a great crew to work with. 😊👍🏻🐚
Back in the 1990s, fishing in Suffolk and lining for cod in the winter, we used to get a lot of whelks coming back on the baits. Then, a few years later, hardly any, but by then the area was being potted for whelks. In those days, there was a very good market for whelks in the Far East (Korea, mainly, as I recall) as they were or are considered an aphrodisiac there. Someone I know used to put them in a microwave, which fired them out of the shell with the steam pressure build-up, but personally, nicely boiled with chilli vinegar and a bit of salt is about right.
Aphrodisiac?!? How crazy!!
Amazing as always! top grafters
Those lads graft none stop!! Great teamwork.
Great video my friend! Extremely excited to see the process!! Thank you and the whole Crew😊
Thank you Connie. Have a wonderful day. 😊🐚
Very cool video John! Like the others, a lot of teamwork on these fishing boats!
I agree. One thing that stood out to me was the harmony in which the crew works. Hard graft and everyone helping each other out. These guys were a great crew to work with. 😊👍🏻🐚
Thats sort of thing i thrived off on trawlers, organised chaos, everyone knew there job ,safe boat that 👍
One thing that stood out to me is the harmony in which they all worked. Good hard graft. The boys were a great bunch of lads to spend the day with. 😊👍🏻🐚
@@TheFishLocker that's what makes it safe I know you know that John really enjoyed it maye
Absolutely loving this series! Top work 🎣🎣
Thank you Lewis.
These videos are great John! Wonderful insight into a day in the life of a commercial fisherman. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the posts on this boat with this crew. The choreography of the crew is just meticulous and real pleasure to see professionals at work. Really nice job brother. Love home as always!
I absolutely agree my friend. One thing that stood out to me was the harmony in which the crew works. Hard graft and everyone helping each other out. These guys were a great crew to work with. 😊👍🏻🐚
Really enjoying your commercial fishing videos. Educational and entertaining. Thanks.
Thank you very much Dan, that is what I hoped when I made them. With any luck they will help to shed a light on a world few people get to experience.
Well done, nice video. thank you.
Thanks John.
That was a great video really enjoyed it mate great stuff. I found how thay stacked the pots to shoot back out really fascinating. The way they left the boat and didn't get tangled. Good to see you getting stuck in as well 😉 brilliant as always bud all the best tight lines 🎣🎣🎣
It’s a great system and very safe. I wasn’t there as a spectator mate, I do my best to pull my weight. 🤣
