- Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Cuttlefisherman. We work their commercial cuttlefish cages and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of cuttlefish and also the restrictions and legislation around it.

Business must be rewarding, that is a heck of a fishing boat.
Very few people can afford a boat of this calibre and those that can spend 10 years paying for it. 😉
This series of videos has been in the planning stages for over a year. Sadly last year I missed the Cuttle season. There are already a few more videos in editing and planning so stay tuned and enjoy!!! 😊👍🏻🦞🎣🐚🐙
Interesting, I had no idea they got that big 😲
@@franiannarone8196 - They do get very slightly bigger than that if you can believe it!!
Absolutely fascinating, thankyou!
Great crew, happy to share, and a well run vessel, greatly informative video as per, well done John
Interesting video - how are the cuttlefish dispatched?
Great to meet you John was a good day out until next time!!
Now then Billy great meeting you. I’m looking forward to when you lads get down to Portland and for the sharking. 😬👍🏻🦈
Real nice change. Good to see you muck in and earn your keep.
I’m not here for a free ride mate. That’s not how I roll. 😉
@@TheFishLocker yep that’s obvious from your videos. Keep up the good work. Say hi to James. 😀
great informative video .Great to see sustainable fishery at work ,tough breed those commercial lads.
I am glad you enjoyed the video Derek, and yes, those boys certainly do graft hard.
Utter respect to all the crew of the 'Saint George' and to you especially John - you fitted in perfectly to what was clearly a 'well-oiled' production team.
Absolutely fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. Whilst being a huge 'usual' Fishlocker follower, this proposed new 'direction' gets my 100% support. Looking forward to the next one!
I will still be doing what we do normally but just with more of these “A day in the life of…” videos mixed in when I can. The crew onboard were brilliant. A real pleasure to work with, I’ve worked with some real hard work crews before. These guys were positive and welcoming and really a pleasure to be around. 😊👍🏻

This will be a blast...let's watch.
I'll be back at the end of your show
That was great to watch John.
That is definitely something I would enjoy
Cheers 🇨🇦🍻
Glad you enjoyed joining us mate. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker largest cuttlefish I've ever seen
Never bored watching you. I love marine biology and i love eating fish. Fascinating
Thank you.
This is really cool. I don't think I see any youtube channels make content quite like yours.
Thank you, I take that as a big compliment. 😊
@@TheFishLocker You're the best in your youtube niche. Keep up the great work!
A nice clean boat and fabulous teamwork.
The boat was great and the crew were a brilliant bunch of lads a real pleasure to work with. 😊
John what a great vid, what a great set up, lads' very professional boat is clean calm safe no shouting n balling, wheelhouse is immaculate 10/10 all round. Hope you bagged a couple for Jim to do the business, would love to see that mate.
The boat and crew were fantastic. A real pleasure to work with.
Great vid, John, and always good to see and learn something new. Hope you get out again with the lads when they are whelking 👍😁
Cheers!
😉 Stay tuned.
That was an incredible video... I've never eaten one..but I love squid and octopus.
They are much like Squid just thicker. Delicious. 👌🏻😉
I was down there at the weekend watching them bring in the cuttlefish and thanks for posting that.
Ha, small world isn’t it. 😉👍🏻
Certainly earned your wages today John 👍
That modern boat has an unusual shape and can spin around on a sixpence 🛥️
If i was a cuttlefish i would be waiting for another cuttle to enter the pot then quickly slip out the open spikes too freedom 😅
Take care John
Jason
The boat is brilliant for its purpose isn’t it. And very efficient with the design. 👍🏻😊
Absolutely fascinating. I had no idea that cuttlefish were so prolific or so big! Excellent video, many thanks 👍🏻
Fascinating isn’t it!! Most folks have no idea. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video, please share it on 😊👍🏻
This is such a great contrast to your usual content, would love to see more like it in the future!
I am glad to hear it. I already have a few videos lined up and in editing. 😉👍🏻
What's great is the fishermen recognise you as a fellow fisher, not a wanker with a camera.
@@davidduffy-xb3vg - Can I not be both? 🤣
@@TheFishLocker What's a wanker?
@@mawmawvee - Google it. 😉👍🏻
Thank you John and crew, I am 62 and have never seen Cuttlefish being caught like that, it was an eye opener that is for sure.
Every day is a school day mate. 😉
Ull have to stop with the title captain then, cos captains know everything sea related😅
I am 62 and cuttle fish is also known in Asia as Camalion of the Sea...because they camouflage themselfes everytime.
Not gonna lie, having watched documentaries about cuttlefish and how fascinating and intelligent they are this seemed a bit brutal, but I appreciate there’s obviously bundles of them and as long as it’s fished sustainably then that’s the best it can be.
I thought that too
That is exactly what I hope comes across in the video. These are fished for sustainably and with a very selective and low impact method.
Cudos to the fishermen, i loved the entire show. Great work ethic and respected given their battles with the foreign fishermen poaching their spots/grounds. Glas it went well for all!
Thank you. Yes these guys work very hard and also care very much about the sustainability of their fishery. 👍🏻😊
Nice one John, those seahorses were beautiful 👍🏴
Really special aren’t they. 😊
Very Interesting Thanks John the boat Skipper and the rest of the Crew
Thank you.
Very interesting, didn't know cuttle fish was so in demand
Referred to as “Black Gold!!”
Your a man of many talents lad - the skipper would not have let you anywhere near the gear or processing if he had any doubt about your knowledge & understanding of pro boat work. It was obvious you were enjoying yourself as part of a grand team. Hats off to you John - a very interesting watch I must say.
I wasn’t there for a free ride I enjoy getting stuck in. You also need to have all of your seafish and sea safety courses and certificates. 😉
Wow John, that was fascinating ! Great video thank you so much graham👍👍
My pleasure Graham, best wishes to the family mate.
Good eye spotting those seahorses, a good bit rarer than the Cuttlefish it would appear! Thanks for saving them and for making this vid! :)
They were like finding a little treasure. 💙
Thank you for showing us how guys working hard to make our stomach happy💯💪🔥🍀👍
It is my pleasure. 😊👍🏻
John the video was fantastic. A real look at what it’s like on a boat Harvesting a fantastic product.
Glad you enjoyed the video bud. I hope folks find the series interesting and educational. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video please share it on to them. 😊👍🏻
Smashing John, I love Cuttlefish, it is so sad the Brits have no idea what they are missing, greetings from Cyprus. 🐟🐟🦞🦞
They aren’t happy eating it unless it’s covered in breadcrumbs. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
John that was fascinating, and you could really see how at home you were working on deck. I still cant get my head round how those lines dont get tangled. Cracking video mate, and what an awesome vessel that is. Perfectly fit for purpose
You just keep it simple and keep it tidy mate. I am glad you enjoyed the video bud.
Yessss! Been buzzing for this since i saw your post with the photo earlier!
These videos have been in the works for a very long time. I had planned on starting this series last year but missed the cuttle season due to work commitments.
@@TheFishLocker well im chuffed you’ve got there in the end mate! What an incredible experience!
Absolutely fascinating !!!!
Thank you David. 😊👍🏻
A lot of commercial fishermen get some stick, these lads seem to have it well sussed. Sustainable stock and no, or very little, damage to the fishing ground.👏👏👏
Very interesting about the life of both the fishermen, their tools and their target species.😲😀
A massive thanks to you and the crew, 👍I look forward to future alternative videos. 🤔
Thanks, take care and stay safe.😷
Thank you Ian, I hope that this series of videos will help to open folks eyes to the way fishermen can operate sustainably and effectively.
@@TheFishLocker How do you claim this is a sustainable fishery? The ICES assessment indicated that the stock was likely to have been overfished and subject to overfishing. Concerns about biomass are supported by decreasing trends in English Channel cuttlefish landings and population indices, where recorded. French surveys, conducted by IFREMER, suggest a decreasing trend in abundance in the eastern part of the English Channel between 2006-2014. Marine Management Organisation reported landings in 2021 were also considerably below the five year average (2,616 tonnes versus 4,531 tonnes), which may be due to low stock levels. Additionally, although limited recent studies are available, studies indicate that the English Channel cuttlefish population is either fully or over exploited.
@@TheFishLocker we have full confidence in your knowledge John!!!!! LOVE your videos!! 💙💙🫶👍😉
Great stuff, as is the norm from The Fish Locker, thoroughly engrossing, John, looking forwards to this new series.
Definitely a side of coastal life a lot of folk, myself included, wouldn't have a clue about!
Thanks mate.
Tides are looking SWEET this weekend, John, with us now being into May, no "R", is it still okay to forage for scallops?
Defo gonna be chucking some lures about, NEED that first bass! 😍
That’s it mate, I hope folks find the series interesting and educational. Hopefully it will show folks a world very few get to experience first hand. 😊👍🏻
A very tidy, well organised, professionally run boat & every man in a lifejacket too ( even in the wheelhouse). Good to see, well done. Extremely manoeuvrable boat in the dock too. Thanks for posting .
Modern professional crew and boat mate. That’s how it is when people are at the top of their game. 👍🏻
Very interesting. Thanks for bringing us along. 🔱
My pleasure Stu. I hope folks find the series interesting and educational. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video please share it on to them mate. 😊👍🏻
Will do
That was a brilliant insight into a type of fishing i had no idea about. Can't believe they get so big. Was a treat to see those sea horses. So delicate.
Those Seahorses were like finding a little treasure on the deck. I was so overjoyed to see them. 😊💙
fascinating content and brilliantly edited. I had no idea cuttlefish are fished from Soverign Harbour!! learned soo much!

Very enjoyable vlog, thanks to all on board. 😊😊💖🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🐟
My pleasure Albert.
John ! Another great, intriguing and very interesting video, you nailed it as the boat came back into the Dock, they work hard,it is sustainable and they do no no damage.
You never cease to educate, just love this channel and all it offers....Thankyou🎉
I hope to showcase several of the boats, crews and methods that work hard for a sustainable fishery and to educate people towards other delicious types of seafood we have available to us.
That was awesome. Really interesting. 👍
Thank you. 😊👍🏻
Really interesting. Think there is a nice little fishmonger next to there as well. Got some spider crabs legs last summer to cook for my little one.
Fish and crab shack. 👍🏻
I love it when content is about the day in life of a commercial fishermen. It gives us a reality how hard these guys work to get food on our plate. Gives everyone a different perspective. You and KeyWestWaterman are my favorites it shows us the reality of everything and how I can't really complain about market prices. Great content thanks!
People have been telling me about this guy. I will have to message him if we ever get back to the keys. 😊👍🏻
I don't comment often but this video deserves every plaudit. What a great insight into cuttle fishing and the way you made it look like you did it every day. Maybe a species series of Fishlocker on tour with Baring sea crab as the finale !!
Love your work John.
I’ve been fishing for most of my life Andy and I’m not afraid of getting stuck in. I really enjoyed my time onboard with the lads so I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I hope people find it not only interesting but educational, most people will never get to see this world in person. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Thank you for your wonderful reply. Best regards to you and your family.
Thank you, really interesting. look forward to more in this series
My pleasure Guy, hope you enjoy the next one.
Fascinating insight, much appreciated ✌️😁
My pleasure mate. Glad you enjoyed the video.
As I was expecting John, it was very nice seeing you giving a hand to the lads while explaining about the cuttlefish with your extended knowledges of marine life. Like another comment says, the skipper wouldn't have let you get on their way if you didn't know what you were doing. In reality you can do just as good. Thanks again. The next episode coming up.
Credit goes to the skipper and crew, they were a pleasure to work with. Good crews and skippers like that are hard to find. 👍🏻
Really enjoyed that video John, I've never seen the cuttlefish commercial fishing process, very productive, the no bait in the pots/cages, and those wee eggs laid in them. A good day/experience I'm sure. 👍🎣🍻. Cheers mate. Mark.
It’s a really interesting fishery isn’t it. I hope folks find the series interesting and educational. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video please share it on to them. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I have done, great content, made one of your mono rig knots, the 'blood loop', as I was getting problems with the hook lengths twisting on the main line, I will test it soon. 👍🎣.
@@markdbowman2807 - If you are using light mono it can happen. Try the twisted boom blood loop. It gives a better stand-off hooklength.
@@TheFishLocker I will try that knot to John, I'm using 18 - 20 kg mono 0.5 mm, 👍🎣, thanks mate.
Nice one John. Never seen anything like that before. Very interesting 👌
Glad you thought so Darren. I hope folks find the series interesting and educational - as it’s a world very few people get to experience. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video please share it on to them. 😊👍🏻
Always interested in the commercial side of things. (from a game warden regulator from USA) I appreciate the effort commercial fishers to bring in the catch. They are vital to our economy and ecology. good on you all.
I agree and am glad that people can see that. I come from a fishing family.
This video had the three E value: educational, entertaining, and exciting.
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for making this video!
I used to process cuttlefish in a factory in Devon when I was a young man but never knew how they were caught👍
Every day is a school day mate. Where did the cuttle from your factory go to?
@@TheFishLocker it is that 🤣
Mostly Spain if I remember correctly
We Brits don’t eat the stuff but some of the lads used to take a few and use them for fishing bate but never known anyone actually eat them.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those tiny Sea Horses John!!! ❤️❤️👍 😅
My 7-year-old grand daughter was watching w/ me!!! 😄😄👏👏😉 We've never seen them in real life!!!
What a JOY that was!!! 🫶🫶
Thank you for the close up!!!!
Those seahorses were a real treat for me too. 😊
Interesting fishing, 1st time seeing Cuttlefish fishing. I fished all my life in NL. Canada , Deep sea trawlers for Cod Fish, Red Fish, Halibut, mackerel, Capelin, Turbot. Some Atlantic Salmon in shore, cheers
We do not get Capelin here, but the others are common species on our side of the pond. 😉
Love to see more of this. Outstanding video and editing. Thank you
Thanks mate. 👍🏻
That is a clean boat. Interesting and informative. Thanks. 🇺🇸
It was a fantastic vessel Roger. A real pleasure to work on. If you think any of your friends would enjoy the video, please share it on 😊👍🏻

Very cool video! Provided it’s benefiting your channel, I’d love to watch more commercial fishing videos❤
I plan to build on this series throughout the year with many more videos. 😊👍🏻
Brilliant ! Thanks for taking us along 👍, went to Venice a few years ago and the locals were catching small cuttles in the grand canal with rod and line and spinning with artificial lures that looked like prawns !
That is very interesting 👍🏻
That Was Very Interesting I've Never Seen Cuttlefish Fishing Thanks For Sharing John

Exhilarating video John. What an incredible boat! I’ve never seen such a clean commercial. It looked superb and completely fit for purpose. Great to see lads who care about what they do. Looking forward to the next one. Well done mate.
You are going to enjoy what I have coming up then mate. 😉👍🏻
So glad that your secretary got to speak to their secretary.
I am obviously taking the piss
Brilliant episode as ever - Great books- old man and the sea and calm at sunset, calm at dawn - and obviously Moby
So weird we dont eat seafood ( obviously i did have an issue of projectile vomiting at even smell of fish when little - my brothers necking herrings and sprats)
Im good now
Total respect.
Part of the issue is the season for Cuttles is so short and last year was our first year to be allowed to travel abroad after lockdown.
Great stuff. I'd be very interested to see them prepped and cooked.
I have a video planned for that soon. 😉👍🏻
Amazing stuff, thank you !
Thank you very much. 😊👍🏻
Awesome to see bro glad the UK has a fantastic fishery greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you Jay.
Great video! Interesting how the eggs hang on the rope and cages.

Very educational, now having seen this how about showing how to cook them.😎
That will be coming up at some point. Jim has been away on holiday and we’ve been very busy. But it is coming.
Really interesting about the sustainability of the Cuttle. Again another very informative video.
keep em coming.
Thank you Malcolm, I am glad you picked up on that part. I am hoping to showcase more of the sustainable methods of fishing in this new series.
Would love more commercial adventures 😊
I’ve got 3 more in various stages of editing which is why I’ve had to step it back to 1 video a week this past fortnight. I won’t say any more, but they are good. 😉🤣👍🏻
I hope the Seahorses made it back & together too, great video bud 👍 👏

They do grow slightly bigger if you can believe it!!!
Really enjoyed this one, fascinating stuff .I even enjoy just watching the ropes Come off.Feels like i was there too and didn't have to put up with any sea sickness.

what a really interesting insight into cuttle fish fishing, never seen it before and was nice to see the whole thing from start to finish...
the only part i've seen is the backbone which we use to look for after a good storm so we collected them for my dads budgies etc
That is the only part that most people see. This is a world that not many people get to experience. 😊
very nice cuttlefish fishing day. amazing how big they can be.and it's so good to eat. also a good bait for dentex .
Great all round arent they. 👍🏻

Very interesting video John. Back breaking work for youngsters me thinks
That’s what fishing is mate. Hence why it’s a dying industry, people don’t want to graft any more.
I love your videos because it keeps the real English fishing a life 😊😊
Thank you Andie. I do hope that our videos can go some way to showcasing what is great about U.K. fishing.

what an interesting fishery. Thanks for bringing us along for the adventure. Good Hard working days aboard that vessel.
It is my pleasure David, I am glad that you enjoyed joining us. 😊
Its good to hear there are fishermen who are conscious of the ecosystem they're taking from, I hear for too many disheartening stories about fisheries at the moment and their impact on the environment.
I plan on showcasing and highlighting in this series fishermen like Scott and his crew and the methods which they can use to work sustainably and also help to educate people about this way of life. 😊🐙
That was fun to watch. My only association with cuttle fish is the cuttle bone our family used in bird cages. Thanks.
It is funny how many people say that same thing. I hope this video and the others I’m making will go some way to helping educate people as to a world that very few get to experience first hand. 😊👍🏻
Amazing creatures cuttlefish I never knew that bait is not used in the traps everyday us a school day look foward to the next chapter john

Great episode. Hopefully you can get back out with them for a Whelk session in the summer.
Just wait and see. 😉
Great video as usual great insight and information as usual you have a real passion for the sea geez 👍
As with all of our videos mate, we are simply sharing what we know and love doing. 👍🏻😊
What a fascinating insight into the the day in the life of commercial fishing boat and something I never thought about being caught as a species off our coast as it not seen in the fishmongers, supermarkets or many restaurants in the UK so don't think of it as a commercially viable catch. Look forward to next episode of a day in the life series
Some fresh fish merchants are starting to stock them but most of it does go abroad to Europe.
I just watched a cuttlefish documentary... I feel so bad for these beautiful creatures. I thought it was so fascinating how they hypnotized their prey before snatching them up.
And no one feels bad for the prey? 😉
Great video, John. Brought me back to my days in the offshore and inshore fisheries. Sure do miss those days.
I really enjoyed getting back out amongst the lads and the fish.
Hello John, what a brilliant video! First time seeing a cuttle fish!! I learned a ton about cuttlefish and feel inspired to try eating one. Say hello to your first mate at home.

What a very interesting video John ,some of those cuttles were monsters ,good eating and bait ,and well done to the Lads for allowing you to see how they do it
What do they taste like?
I hope people not only find the series of videos interesting but also educational.
Thanks John, that was great. I'm still at a loss as to why they would go into the pots with no bait. 🤔🤔
Curious isn’t it.
Very interesting video. Here where I live, cuttlefish look for the estuary areas to spawn.
We also see them in the estuary here
Here there is an artisanal fishing technique in which they put tree branches with green leaves in the pots, the females look for these branches to spawn, entering the pots and being held back. I look forward to more commercial fishing videos. Very interesting no doubt. Cheers
