    WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The Bible is clear that “a fool says in his heart there is no God.” When that person begins to embrace a man-made cause, a man-invented ideology, and in the process, do what is right in his own eyes, he begins to justify abominable and evil things.

@@patsaxon5284 - Yeah, no one cares what the Bible says. It sanctions slavery, incest, rape, genocide and there is NO evidence that God had anything to do with the Bible. So some guy just saying, "a fool says in his heart that there is no God" doesn't mean anything. Religions are man-invented ideologies and they do allow you to justify abominable and evil things and even give you divine sanction for them too. Prove that your imaginary sky Daddy is real and that he had anything to do with the Bible.

@Grace Bressi "and there is no evidence that there is not."
Doesnt matter. The burden of proof is not on me. You are claiming that a creator exists. I, on the other hand, am just saying that I am not convinced there is a creator. You are claiming something. Simple logic dictates that you should prove your claim. Why should i give evidence for something I did not claim?
"There is enough evidence with people that have had near death experiences."
No there is not. That is not evidence. Its just your brain hallucinating. Your brain tries to keep you alive. Thats also the reason why you remeber your loved ones when you ae dying. Your body's survival mechanisms kick in, trying to keep you alive. That isn't evidence for a creator. My point stands: there is no evidence of a creator or creators.

Doesnt explain the whole universe? Of course it doesnt. Science explains the whole universe. The big bang theory explains the universe. You have no evidence that a creator made the universe. At this point, what you have is just blind faith, nothing to do with reality.

Capitalizing the G is done out of respect to theists whom will read it, I assume this to be the case because that is why I do it. Not for any imagined belief in a God as you are assuming. I use to not capitalize the G in comments and reconsidered if I should or not and now I do for that reason. As a complete non-believer I do it from respect to those whom I conversing with and for on other reason. That is how civil people treat each other, with respect! I can assure you in my case it is NOT because I have the slighted belief that there exists a God who without fail sits back and watches defenseless children being raped, brutalized and then murdered and does nothing, when it really matters. Then only takes the time to do something after that POS rapist is dead, when it's to late. That is far too late in my mind. To equate that God as a piece of shit (imo) for not helping a child being raped at the time it is occurring would not only be an understatement but be denigrating to shit.

I was an agnostic for most of my life. When I was 17, I started searching for the truth regarding God and whether or not he existed. I researched the claims of Atheism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as well as learning of a few others for about 6 months. By the end the conclusion was clear: Jesus Christ is the only truth. I only ask that as you read the remainder of this comment, please have an open mind and allow me to share with you a piece of evidence:
In my view the strongest piece of evidence is Jesus' resurrection.
Jesus' existence is a historically established fact. Even non-Christian scholars agree on this. We actually have 12 distinct extra-biblical sources from the time period of Christianity's earliest days to confirm this, both Roman and Jewish. They were against Christianity, yet their sources give credence to the existence of its central figure. As such, the Christ-Myth theory is complete rubbish and no serious historical scholar takes it seriously. The historical consensus is that Jesus did indeed exist.
The proof of The Christian God hinges mainly on the resurrection. In order to prove this we need to establish a) Jesus was indeed dead and b) he was alive again later. One of the gospel writers was also one of Jesus' 12 apostles, John. He was present at the crucifixion. He describes the stabbing of Jesus lung as a sudden outflow of blood and then water - this is exactly how an uneducated laymen would describe the rupturing of the pericardial sac, giving credence that his death was authentic. The Romans too were very thorough in their executions, which is why they stabbed Jesus to make sure he was dead. Jesus could not have faked it. Non-Christian scholars agree that he indeed died on the cross. To quote one such scholar - Pinchas Lapide: ''Jesus' death by crucifixion is historically certain.''
Historians agree that the tomb was indeed empty, for various reasons. The belief in Christ's resurrection is dated soon after his death. To quote James DG Dunn, speaking on the resurrection: "This tradition we can be entirely confident was formulated within months of Jesus' death." If the tomb wasn't empty then the Jews and Romans, noticing the fast spread of early Christianity, would have either removed the body and hung it at the city gates (in the case of the Romans) or encouraged the early Christians and the Jews around them to take a look at the body in the tomb. But this didn't happen, because the tomb did not have Jesus in it.
Secondly, Jesus' tomb was first discovered empty by women. Women were viewed very lowly in first-century Palestine (First-century Jewish scholar Josephus wrote that the testimony of a woman could not be trusted, the predominant attitude among the Palestinian men at the time under the false guise that they were naturally mentally inferior). Yet the gospels, and in particular the gospel of Luke (whom archaeologist Sir William Ramsay said: "should be placed along with the very greatest of historians'') attributes a women as the first witnesses. If Christ's resurrection were false and the early Christians wanted the people of their day to believe he was risen, they would have attributed the initial witness of Christ's resurrection to a man. The reason they didn't is because they wanted to record as accurately as possible the events that occurred - the true resurrection of Jesus.
Historically, the Jews circulated the story that Jesus' disciples had stolen the body. This was not only addressed in the gospel of Matthew, but in the second century Justin Martyr recorded that it was still being circulated in his day! There would be no need had the tomb not been empty.
But the disciples could not possibly have stolen the body. Pontius Pilate sent out a detachment of Roman soldiers who took shifts day and night guarding the tomb, so as to prevent anyone from stealing the body. A Roman guard was a group consisting of 10 to 30 soldiers. They took shifts day and night, so there was never a time in the days before Jesus' resurrection that the tomb was never being watched - they would have seen the disciples approach. Even if they were asleep the stone, weighing about 3 or 4 thousand pounds would have needed to be pushed by multiple of Jesus' followers to have a chance of being moved; so they would have been seen, heard struggling and the heavy stone heard moving, arrested and killed. This did not happen. This leaves us with the fact that the disappearance of Jesus' body from the tomb could not have happened from an outside source coming in. It had to have happened on the inside, where only the dead Jesus lay. Hence, we can conclude he was resurrected.
Giving further credence to this is that 10 of the 11 remaining (after Judas' betrayal) disciples were executed because of their Christian faith, as attested confidently by historical sources. To quote Sean McDowell of Peter: ''The early, consistent and unanimous testimony is that Peter died as a martyr;" and of the martyrdom of the disciples as a whole: "It shows the depth of the apostles’ convictions. They were not liars. They truly believed Jesus rose from the grave and they were willing to give their lives for it." They needed only to deny their faith to be saved, but did not. Would you seriously die for something that you know wasn't true? These men died fully believing in their contact with the risen Christ.
Some have theorised that they merely had hallucinations, but this isn't true for 4 reasons:
      1) The theory does not explain the empty tomb
      2) Multiple people shared in group-visions of Jesus
      3) They had group-conversations with the risen Christ
      4) They touched Jesus and ate with him, which is impossible with a hallucination. The gospel of John speaks of Thomas physically touching Jesus' wounds to prove to himself he was real!
Another evidence was Paul's conversion. Luke (as said, a first-rate historian) records in the Book of Acts that Paul persecuted the early church before being converted after seeing and talking with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. This was also confirmed by Paul in his own letters, in which he also expresses his deep remorse at persecuting God's church, saying he doesn't even consider himself worthy as an apostle after the way he persecuted early Christians (see 1 Corinthians 15:9). He hated them, then he became arguably their most influential apostle. Historians conclude that he too was martyred for his faith. This would not have happened had he not encountered the risen Jesus.
In one of Paul's letters to the church in the early days of Christianity, First Corinthians (Chapter 15 for reference), he speaks of Christ's post-resurrection appearances to people (over 500 in total), even encouraging the Corinthian church, if they don't take his word for it, to speak to the people who saw the risen Jesus if they don't believe - that they may have mental assurance of his resurrection. If the resurrection was something he and the other apostles made up he would not encourage believers to speak to people who could discredit the apostle's claims.
And consider this, that the someone did not just sit down and write the bible. 4 independently written narrative sources (the gospels) and even more letters from different authors such as Paul and Peter, are consistent on this fact of Jesus' resurrection - with secular sources testifying of the earliest Christians' convictions of the resurrection was as fact - to the point they died for their beliefs.
If we take all of these together it becomes clear that Jesus rose from the dead, which would be impossible unless it was a miracle of God. Please consider this, and may The Lord show you the way my friend. Amen.

    • @MendTheWorld
      @MendTheWorld Před 4 lety +13

James Lamb I appreciate your comment. _Some_ people, for _some_ reason, feel a compelling need (or perhaps desire) to have the sort of "personal relationship" that Juan describes, with an invisible entity they _believe_ exists. Juan's beliefs are based largely on the thoughts and emotions he experiences through this relationship; and while the relationship itself may be imaginary, and while his reasoning may be circular, the experience seems as real as anything else in his life; _so_ real, in fact, that he is anxious to share it with others as well.
This, I feel, is Juan's story. I think he is sincere, and that he means well, yet he is unable to provide the sort of objective evidence that Matt and Jamie are asking for.
The problem I see with the more militant forms of atheism, is that it gives insufficient consideration for the need that _some_ people seem to feel to have this sort of relationship with a god whose existence they are unable to prove, other than through their own personal experience. On a personal level, it seems almost cruel to try to disabuse Juan of a belief that is so personally important to him.
After many years of discussing and debating these issues, Matt is aware that Juan will be unable to defend his position. Thus, to lead him down this path, as if such a possibility exists, strikes me as smacking of entrapment.
There _must_ be some kinder and gentler approach for dealing with people like Juan, and I think Jamie was inclined in this direction. I have great respect for Matt, but perhaps his extensive experience in discussing and debating these issues has left him a bit jaded.

As a former christian, I can 100% say I was in this guys shoes. To be fair, I always questioned the imperfect morality in the bible but in high school I really became disillusioned. At a certain point, I realized there’s really no justification for believing one religion over another when both are equally unprovable. In fact, many scientific claims in holy books have been disproven with time. It was obviously far more likely that these were guidebooks to happier lives (for some) but ultimately works of fiction. I can learn moral lessons from watching Star Wars that are “true” but ultimately come from fiction. The biggest challenge to leaving religion was overcoming my fear of punishment/hell and reconciling with the fact that I (and my brother) were the most logical people in my family but could never really be accepted if we were openly atheist.

If you take issue with his methods or ideology then say so and that can open up a dialogue. Santiago Renteria I’m sorry that your past experiences have lead you to believe that athiest=callous. As an American, I believe that we have the right to believe what ever we want as a fundamental human right, as such, I would never chose a funeral to have a conversation about faith with someone whom I know would be hurt by the mere conversation ... especially not from a “HA HA THERES NO HEAVEN” standpoint. Nor do I honestly believe that anyone I know would ever chose to have conversations such as these at functions that mean such a great deal to those involved and their families. Though, I had to personally watch a religious funeral forced against the wishes of the deceased atheist friend of mine in highschool and that gave me my current perspective on why NO ONE, religious or not, should ever betray such an important ceremonial wish by the deceased. For the same reason that just because I’m an atheist, doesn’t mean that I won’t obey my parents wishes to have religious burials. I must address the accusations you’ve posed however. Because for as much “one-up-ism” that Matt partakes in with often willing, if not combative callers, I have seen countless interactions by Matt and his cohosts doing the opposite of that. For one thing, he has made specific comments about respecting others even though we may disagree on these issues, as well as mentioning the power of kindness and civility during discourse. I would suggest that you watch more than just the fan geared compilation videos of “atheist crushes theist”, as I admit that the titles are more of a mental fellatiatian, and clickbait, for viewers and not an example of the breadth of topics covered on the atheist experience. Perhaps then you will see what I mean. Because mudslinging gets neither us, nor the discussion, anywhere.

Matt thoroughly examined his faith and found it loaded with self cancelling contradictions which he did not agree with.
My sister does the same thing with me. She approaches me with the same patronizing offer to save me before its too late
and Yahweh is forced to send me to my eternal damnation.
I'm not a big fan of Yahweh who loves bloody sacrifices and torture,
instead of answering prayers for peace on Earth.

I'm curious if both of you had the same upbringing? I would imagine if she remained brainwashed, you would too. I'm honestly starting to think that it's some kind of brain defect in certain individuals, like an underdeveloped (or damaged) frontal lobe, but I digress.

Adrian S I was raised in a devoutly christian home and my mother and I had our first fight over god when I was 4 and she was trying to indoctrinate me with the Noah story. She got so mad at me I was afraid. YOU DO NOT QUESTION GOD’s WAYS!!!! And here I am an atheist, still and my mother and I argued over her bible beliefs today. She’s lost to religion. I can’t believe we are related. She has this belief she will see her dad in heaven and that’s all that matters. She is refusing to follow medical advice because her pain and suffering pleases god and gets the poor souls out of purgatory. So not all kids become brainwashed. I just learned young that my mother was not based in reality. I’d ask for real advice, and all she’d say was pray to God. Such useless parenting.

Adrian S thanks much. You know I now have 3 little kids and it’s so great to show them how the world works and how amazing LIFE is and incredible nature is and no magical beliefs are needed. I have learned so much WITH them. I truly love seeing life through their eyes. And the best is we can talk about how the world works and how to go about learning and that asking questions is a good thing. It’s still a struggle with my mother, and I wish I had had a relationship where we could have discussed the things that mattered to me. She had no interest in science or history, only the Bible and EWTN. She never once went with me to a museum or planetarium. I know other kids who had it worse; I was never hit. Shamed, and told I was born a sinner.... So although I came out as an atheist, I still struggle with damage caused by religion.

@@trishayamada807 As someone who had an unfortunate upbringing (not because of religion), I can relate to some of the pain you must have experienced, and likely still do to some degree. It's great to see that you have learned from your situation. Your children will be so much better off because of the lessons you're instilling onto them. My upbringing, and the world we live in, has made me so jaded that I don't even desire children. I'm not past the point of no return but it's not far away either... anyways, I digress. I hope you can replace the pain your mother has brought you with the joy of your children. It sounds like you're doing a great job so far. Take care.

Not to be ageist, but a 23 year old presuming to evangelise a person who's been atheist longer than he's been alive is quite a flex
