WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

My dog has never committed murder or hurt anyone.
When I give him food, he never tries to eat me.
There is only one possible explanation.
He secretly believes in Jesus.
@tedgrant2 Hi Ted.
You're with your dog part of the time. MAYBE we can trust you if you vouch for him.
But while you're at work, asleep, etc you can't vouch for him.
You may be just accepting his word for it that, while you're at work, he murdered zero ... people? dogs? what counts as "any _one_ for a dog.
While you're feeding him, he's got food. He has no need to eat you. A better test would be not feeding him to a week or two.

Did your mother teach you to use obscenities' to express yourself ?
Correction. He made no fool of himself. He openly and honestly questioned and listened. John did not make a fool of himself, he proved his intellectual honesty. That's all
@Sun of York No, but I did however learn to use certain obscenities on self-righteous pricks such as yourself when they bring up my mother.
Matt is so mentally strong, that he will even disagree with Eric. He doesn't give two hoots haha.
You think disagreeing with your partner in a debate is shocking?
@@hawkeye48 I never said that.
@@kierananthony25 You are saying he is "so" mentally strong, as though this isn't just a standard expected level of conviction to happen in a debate, where the most intellectually honest you can be is to call out people on your side when there's disagreement? That's the basics of being a debater or politically active.
He's wrong, though. They can do a brain scan and tell what image a person is looking at with surprising fidelity. Doesn't change anything in the debate, and even Matt's allowed to be wrong once in a while.

While it is precise in what it's made to do, and what doctors can derive from the information is accurate, the physical form of the output is purely arbitrary.

John was an honest broker. He truly was open minded and willing to concede he might not have been right about things. He didn't just furiously backpedal and make excuses to show he couldn't be wrong. I don't know about you guys but I like John. I've talked with hundreds and he didn't seemed like he was talking AT them nearly as much as some of the others. He has genuine moments where he pauses and reflects and he concedes points. if I see this talk is anything, I see this as proof that the epistemological approach is infinitely better than argumentative/debate style. "I don't want to believe, I want to know". -- Some dude called Carl Sagan
Never heard of him. 😆
I only heard his name in a staged rap battle between Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking
I think that was a statement made by someone else on Carl’s behalf, after his death, as a description of his mindset. Either way, it’s a really bad quote because it paints this picture (whether intended or not) that belief in the absence of certainty is bad... which it isn’t. I recognize that knowledge doesn’t actually require absolute certainty, but considering that knowledge is a subset of belief, pitting them against each other gives that impression (that beliefs can only be the result of faith... which isn’t accurate). My interpretation here might be overly philosophical and pedantic, but the impression given I think can be a universal harm to those that take this quote at face value. Point being: make sure your beliefs are supported by sufficient evidence and all is good.
He was the Man.
Every time I think "maybe I could debate" and then I listen to Matt, I just sit down and lay my head on the table. Matt is so good at what he does. And having the amount of knowledge that he has on the Bible, is a huge huge help.

Sometimes its warranted. Other times, his fuse is WAY too short.
He doesnt apportion his annoyance appropriately. He indiscriminately jumps too it.
He wasnt always like that.
Earlier shows...he would do it when warranted.
Now he treats way too many that way, regardless of it being warranted or not.
He does it...doesnt really care that he does it. Hes aware and does it.

@@thickerconstrictor9037 I imagine you don't do it yourself for a reason though. That's likely the same reason most of us don't. Most people don't like being spoken to like Matt does. And I'm glad he did - John seems like such a likable and friendly sort of dude, and clearly came in with good intentions of just have a good conversation - I think Matt going off on him the way he sometimes does would've been counterproductive and would've just damaged the goodwill and rapport they'd built with him throughout the call.

Finally a caller with integrity. He listened politely and was willing to see the flaws in his own reasoning and reconsider his position. A thoughtful, thorough and very enjoyable discussion.
The caller is projecting his own insecurity, he cannot imagine himself not believing in a god, and therefore he cannot imagine others not believing also.
Robert allan I think that is a primary issue with theists. And, actually, because it shatters their worldview, they are the ones suppressing their beliefs.
the caller is attributing Morality to his god - a common Christian apologetic talking point: "you can't be moral without god." Frank Turek and Jordan Peterson promote this crap. Ironically, the Old Testament god is hella immoral, and the New Testament is immoral too with the Christian concept of Hell and Jesus telling slaves to "obey your masters"
This is true, and that is what keeps religion alive.
The fact he even made this call to this show indicates he might stumble on to the truth along the way....just like all atheists have reached the truth along the way...all atheists are born into a family that have a religious belief but somewhere along the way they determine there is no presentable evidence to support it as being true....people don't give up on religion....people discover it is NOT true....words written in a book by others are merely words written in a book by others.

Eric and Matt both can get pretty aggressive, and I think they kinda need a more passive person to kinda even it out a bit.
@Prophet Everyone is on a high horse when dealing with an idiot . You must come across a lot of people on high horses !
Erik is most likely suffering from an inferiority complex🤣🤣🤣🤣 he always talks about it's his show and I don't think he likes Matt coming in taking over 😂😂😂😂
You can tell when he gets bothered he's always snug in his glasses up and touching his hair !!
Poor little Erik!!!!!!
Not quite, when caller didn't hear Matt's request , it was Eric that slowed caller down and told him Matt has a question.
@@spocksvulcanbrain I agree, but it seems Eric has been reading criticisms, because the collab in a video they released last week is so on point.
Matt at his best ,when he is explaining and patient
That ended so nice! That was a really great way that both of you ended this call!
I had a friend, years ago, that used to say, "If you believe it, it's true...to you." The trouble is, If you believe something is true because of physical proof, then it is tangible. If you believe something because you want it to be true, then that is wishful-thinking and that is faith.
The most important thing this guys said:
"I never thought about these things."
This is why this show exists. If all you know is what is in your own bubble, you might never think to ask questions.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Eric rubbed them the wrong way. Something about him irritates me.
He is young. All young people are irritating.
Mr. E I’d never watch the show if he were the host.
Eric is an okay guy. I love him and I love Matt too. I could listen to them and Tracie for hours. They have taught me a lot in my old age. If it wasn't for them, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Robert Wright, and Julia Sweeney, among others, I would not have advanced this far from fundamentalist Christianity to atheism as I did. :))
@@anrose8335 lets not forget ayan hirsi ali,sam harris and stephen fry.Hitch is the boss, all the others are his disciples
Hes just a smart ass a lot of the time and treats the callers as if they are idiots when in reality they have just been led astray.
I've just recently, maybe in the last 2 months or so found out about Matt while stumbling through CZcams and really like his content. This one in particular made me hopeful that his questions and lines of logic get through to more people than we know! I hope he did call back with a lil diff view on life!
Finally someone who seemed to have his eyes opened a bit by the end of the call. Bravo!
You believe in fairies. You just _suppress it._ See, I can do it too!
Jarrod how did you know? I love faeries !
Exactly! How do I know?
Jarrod Because we all do!
Of course... I was just suppressing it!
I don't think you are supposed to call them that anymore.
The Bible says..., The Bible shows..., The Bible was... He's stuck right there and can't move forward. That's his only answer to everything.
I found this at the end of a Bible, I wonder if they all have it?
"This story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this Bible are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended or should be inferred."

The human body being a product of evolution and not a single creator I can believe. But pizza was clearly intelligently designed. Therefore God exists
Pizza was invented by the devil to tempt away from the path of gawd
So God doesn't like pizaa, booze, premarital sex or the gays? Party's in heaven must suck.
Well, yeah. Basically heaven is just everybody telling god how great he is, and how much they love him. It's like having to suck up to the worst boss ever 24/7
That guy should have called The Atheist Experience when Matt and Tracie were on instead of this... Eric's OK sometimes, but here, he's just in the way.
Eric just tries to get into the conversation because he so badly just wants to be heard....
He wants to be Matt so bad it’s pathetic. Especially because he can’t walk the line between stern and rude like Matt can. Really wish they would replace him.
Dennis Jordan yea, he’s very annoying to listen to as an atheist. I can only imagine what I would have thought about him when I was a believer.
@@dennisjordan5917 We all gotta eat. I thought he was fine, not to say that it isn't somewhat true what you said. They should get cosmicskeptic on this podcast. That would be dope as fuck.
You guys are so much fun!
Give the caller some credit. John is a lot more thoughtful than most callers. You don't often hear a caller say "That's a good point." He's taking baby steps out of the darkness in this call.
As for the Matt and Eric dynamic, who gives a damn?
RAmen
I was surprised to see so much hate for him here. Also I think he didn't deserve how Eric treated him for momments
santiago uccella same, I came down expecting to see more comments saying he’s better than most people on these shows, but I’m guessing people got too hung up on the first point he made
He seemed like he wasn't truly listening just being condescendingly amiable.
no he isn't he sounds like every other self righteous idiot like he has the secret answer and anything you say he knows better
Nothing is gonna piss Matt off more than telling him what he personally believes. I can't wait to see this.
Pissed off Matt is my favorite.
don't tell me what I think or believe, nobody but I knows anything near the truth of either!!
This was quite wholesome in the end.
The caller is really sweet though, it's nice to see a calm debate. It feels really productive, whether someone is converted or not.
Question really is why do they need a god to exist to know how to be a decent human being?
GiA JuSt'INa Because of how the Beast System we inhabit socially engineers you to believe that perverse things are normal. This is Satan's Kingdom.
GiA JuSt'INa
1 John 2: 15.
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16. For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father but from the world.
LoL, people find it easier to use GOD as an excuse to not be responsible.
They were taught to believe, so it's safer to go back to that security. Once they step into reality, they don't have any tools to defend themselves.
They were never given any tools to cope with reality.
They don't want to be RESPONSIBLE.
It's sad that people will choose to live their lives scared of going to hell and not one person walking on this planet has proven that there is a hell in the biblical sense.
People will choose to fight the "right fight" just to be right.
So when the topic of religion comes up and I say I don't believe until tangible proof is provided and I'm told something ridiculous like you need to believe, have faith blah, blah, blah... I become responsible by saying anything is possible or I don't know.
But when I hear people using the Bible as proof, I simply ask " are you willing to throw your children in a pit of fire because your Bible is the word of God and it says to do so?
Well, the moral of the story is you can't out do crazy so why bother.
Life is to short to be weighted down by fears of a man made scare tactic.
Grow some balls and question everything.
Be responsible, it's so much easier.
ShinRaPresident Then why is God demanding worship ? Isn’t that the whole point why he sends some to hell? Love me worship, tell me how great I am, if you don’t I will send you to hell. Where is the Free will in that? It’s like god saying you can pick whatever you want caz I give you freedom of choice, but if you don’t pick what I want you to pick I will send you to hell?

After a shakey start, I actually liked the sound of John from Florida. He seemed much more open to new information than most theists and certainly than most born again Christians. It seems he just have a lot of reading and videos ahead of him. I hope he takes the bull by the horns. That's the fun part about challenging your religious beliefs. You end up learning a heap of new things, most of them are the really interesting stuff about the world 😀
Good luck on your journey John.

I appreciate the caller's honesty
I am allways very happy to watch matt when he lets the other person make their points. Than his quick responses are son interesting. This conversation passed so quickly while it's one of his longest.
Off course the caller is also very honest and a good conversationalist
This is about as polite and patient as you will ever see Matt on a call of this nature.
Loved the squeeeky "whaaaat?" in the background when John said he now believes im the book of Eric. Holy shit, all hail Eric and the prophecy of Sunday.

One of the best conversations I have listened to so far, the caller was great towards the end and gave me hope that not all Christian's are beyond rational thought.

@@kubanpanzer I agree. I like Eric. He can handle Matt and that's good. Eric is host of this show...not Matt. If allowed, Matt will dominate the calls. Matt kinda takes over the show. I enjoy both but matt has been doing this for much longer. He is hard to beat with logic.
Matt should get his own show, a nice hr or two show, same concept. Id watch that shit
Eric tries hard but pales in comparison.
I don't think Eric and Matt are a good combo.
Def not on this day they werent
Them stopping each other from interpreting uncharitably really helped this not break down quickly
I usually don't watch when the two of them are paired. Eric gets noticeably pissed when Matt interrupts him or worse, when Matt corrects or disagrees with him.
Don is a good match for Matt because he lets Matt talk over him, I don't blame Eric for wanting to have a say on his own show and not being sidelined by callers who treat TH as an AXp pre-show.
I don't think Matt and anyone make a good combo. Matt should be on his own because...well, even when there's someone on the show, he's still pretty much the only one talking.
It's Eric's show and no one is going to run it but him, not even Matt. 😁
