    Hi Will,
    Thank you for your great and detailed review.
    One question: is it possible to use a wheel from different brand, e.g. Ascher, Gomez etc. On that base?
    I think there won't be a chance to connect other wheels via Bluetooth or using the inductive connection, but the base should still be able to detect the right wheel angle, correct?
    So it might be a more "universal usable" base, like a simucube, instead of a fanatec base?
    For sure, it needs an additional software for the different wheels.
    Am I right?
    Thanks for your time and take care!

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  Před 2 lety +4

    Please.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  Před 2 lety +1

      As shown in part 1, it uses a hall effect sensor rather than an encoder for determining the rotor's relative position. I'm not sure on the resolution but it certainly doesn’t feel lacking compared to alternatives in the same price bracket. Paddle threshold felt fine to us. We opened the paddle module up in part 1 but couldn't determine if they are microswitch based or using a hall effect sensor for the upshift and downshift. I believe they are microswitches. The magnet is strong enough that they operate with a nice positive click. I'd say about on par with Fanatec's magnetic paddle modules albiet noisier (although they do include some rubber stick on pads to quiten them down).

  • @zorrothebug
    @zorrothebug Před 2 lety +2

    Hey Will, very good and interesting walk through the features and options. May I correct you on one point though. At 9:20 you state that the FFB intensity in the controller software works as a multiplier on top, which is not correct. The value in the controller software represents the maximum force (nm) that the controller software limits the wheel to and the sim can address. The FFB gain in the sim tells you what percentage of that controller software value is used by the sim. So the value in the sim is a multiplier, but one between 0.0 (0%) and 1.0 (100%).
    So to get maximum without clipping, you should raise the FFB strength in the controller software to raise the usable range (dynamic range) of the Wheel and limit the gain in the sim to some value which suits you. If you limit the maximum range in the controller software to e.g. 60% you are decreasing the dynamic range of usable FFB strength, like replacing a 9nm wheel with a 5.4nm wheel.
    With budget entry level wheels like Logitech 920, TM150/300, etc which are all below 4nm the electric motors are not capable of sustained max torque and therefor it is recommended to have the max FFB strength in controller software below 100% to avoid fading which feels like clipping. In a long corner with high speed force you feel the resistance of the wheel and if it operates and near maximum due to those small dynamic ranges of those wheels at the end/exit of such a corner it can happen that you wheel can't give you any more detail of hitting curbs or street imperfections/bumps because of the fading. Which to the driver seems like clipping.
    DD Wheels do not suffer fading, so do not limit the controller software force in order to avoid clipping, you are just limiting the dynamic range of your wheel.

      Feedback is always welcome so thanks for taking the time :)
      I understand what you're saying and you're right in what you're describing, but I think you may be confused between "Game Force Feedback Intensity" and "Maximum Output Torque Limit". The Maximum Output Torque Limit works as you're describing, but the intensity adjustment appears to operate as an amplifier, essentially scaling the entire output signal from the game up and down from 0 to 100%, rather than just capping the dynamic range (which is what the Maximum Output Torque Limit" does). That's my interpretation anyway and matches what we were feeling and what was shown in the output graph. To us it felt exactly the same as turning the gain up and down inside the game. I could be wrong of course. In any case, "Multiplier" was definitely not the best word to use. No disagreement there.

      @@boostedmedia I know what you mean and I really appreciate your honest opinions and your style of testing sim hardware! But in case of the moza dd you are still paying a lot of money for all that gear .. with the motor, pedals, steering wheel and a rig + some extra stuff you are always up to 2000-3000$+, so this whole product category including the csl dd makes not so much sense for me. If the build quality would be more similar to a simucube i maybe would give it a try. Btw I kinda got an idea of how strong you were trying get that flex by your muscle movement 😂

      I returned my csl dd for simagic alpha mini (eating $70 shopping costs) using my load cell modded logitech pedals until I save up for a new set. I’d stay away from Fanatec personally, and a lot of people agree with me. The quality was really poor, and when I looked at upgrading to a better wheel, it was going to cost just as much as the simagic setup but with a inferior QR, paddle shifters, and much lower torque and weak bump stop wheel base.

    that movement in the quick release wouldn't be acceptable for me, it would drive me mad knowing its there, and id double down on that due to the movement in the shaft, the problem is any click, creak or movement at all would have me thinking in my mind when driving was that click the actual FFB or am i feeling some unwanted movement, i had the same issues with fanatec DD1 when i had one, i just hated it for that, i asked fanatec to send me a new shaft and they happily did, i tried 3 different Z-rings which were suppose to solve the issue but they really didn't, it was only when i got a simucube 2 pro when i realized how solid the quick release could be when done right, i have never driven a car in real life with any movement in the wheel at all and so it takes me right out of the experience when there is any kind of movement, i would take simucubes solution over any ive seen so far even if its more inconvenient and lacks the wireless power features. i actually have no sim racing gear right now i sold it all months ago now and ive been itching to get back in but at a lighter price hence i came here to see whats the story but yeh... just that alone makes me almost certainly not gonna buy one. i don't really like the excuse its all good and gravy when your driving like was the case with fanatec and its notchy sensation, if i turn the wheel and i feel the steps like you can on a DD1 however faint it is that's nothing at all like a real car and destroys the immersion for me, a wheelbase has to be almost real car smooth to turn without being actual hydraulic and solid so my arm strength cant wiggle it... if that's not the case in either one i wont buy it knowing some out there nail both aspects.
    thanks for the review as always.

      The QR is made from a series of notches and a series of balls that fit into the notches. Ironically, there's a bit of play only if the notches are machined with higher precision, as uneven notches would lock and have no play. As an alternative, you can add any irregularity to one of the notch surfaces, like a small folded aluminium sheet, and that will reduce play.
      The elegance of this (and simagic) QR is basically the reason I want this wheel.

    I think that the base is amazing value, but the lack of pedals and a wheel in a package and the lack of cheaper wheels are sort of a deal breaker for me. And the total lack of PS4/5 support makes it unfeasable to most in the current PC GPU environment :(

      Not saying that GPU prices are not insane, but you don't need the latest and greatest GPU, I am still running AC, ACC, iRacing with my R9 390 (yes, a 7 year-old GPU) at over 100 FPS for 1080 screen. So you don't really need the 30 series, but I do agree that there should definitely be an option for a $100-$200 GPU market. But no, today you can get Radeon 6500XT for the same price I paid for my R9 390, and about the same performance too... You can get 1070 for about 150 dollars, and a friend is running Oculus Quest 2 with it just fine. Heck even my 390 ran Half Life: Alyx and Assetto Corsa. So if you just want to go the PC way it is not that bad as it may seem. About for about 650 dollars with a used GPU you can have a cracking computer. Ryzen 5 5600x with 16GB of RAM, B550 motherboard, 650-750W Psu and a case will run you about 500-550 dollars, all you need is a GPU. But if you want a more "future proof" computer I would get an 850W Psu and a quality case that you like and has the features you want (USB ports, window, drive bays, etc), so you only buy that once, and replace the Motherboard and GPU later on.
