Glad to see I'm not the only one so deeply nostalGeek as to re-create his own desk, bring out his ancient items, and seat in the middle of it all!
My wife doesn't understand this at all, my kids are laughing at me, and sometimes I'm myself inclined to think it's a kind of slight mental illness 😅
But it's so sweet to surrender to it.

Loving all this time travel stuff, in fact I've written a sci-fi time travel book based on the commodore 64. It's based on my real childhood memories from the 80s mixed with sci-fi. It's called 'The commodore sphere' and it's the first of a saga of 3. Would love for you to read it.

@@capuman That sounds amazing. I was working on a movie idea that ties nostalgia and son and father over the tapes the father left behind of C64 data after he passed. If you have the book in physical form I'd love to unbox a copy and show it on the channel to help you out. You can start the process at the form retrorecip.es/submit 👍🕹

I got emotional along with you, to the point of tears, as I watched all those warm and fond memories you have come rushing back to you at that moment at your desk. I could see your throat tighten and chest swell with emotion. I still have insurance photos of my Amiga 500+ with my 1084s monitor, external disk drive, my old desk and all of my floppies and games from 1991. Before that, I had the C64 and a huge 1541 disk drive. I would give a lot right now to have all of those precious items back in my life. I think it's incredibly special that you have that desk and everything from 35 years ago. That's also when I had my C64 and Amiga. Incredible memories. Thank you for sharing this. It meant a lot to me that you would allow us to join you on this journey. I was very touched.

I'd very much echo the same sentiments. I'm generally not particularly sentimental but with that said, remembering the 'tech' and some of the TV programmes I watched whilst growing up (e.g. Knightrider...your KITT videos) in the 80's and early 90's (born Dec 1979) is strangely enjoyable (especially via this channel.
I suspect it's partly because many of us viewers share the same powerful emotions you're experiencing whilst producing this type of content. @RetroRecipes please keep up the good work and I hope you and your family have a fantastic Christmas!
FYI - My childhood 'tech' history was:
      1. Sinclair Spectrum 48K+
      2. Commodore 64 (technically it was my brother's, but we'd sometimes share our stuff with each other)
      3. Spectrum 128K +2

@@RetroRecipes Some people are just like that. I luckily managed to keep my C128, Amiga, and all the disks of pirated software.
However, years later in college I found some original PDP-8 programs on paper tape. This was a little before my time, but still a cool piece of history. A co-worker of mine who worked in the same computer lab did some "cleaning" one day, and just threw it out! Why I'll never figure out. He threw out a bunch of other peoples stuff that they didn't give permission for him to throw out. I think some people just assert dominance over space. It's been almost 30 years, and I still am a little steamed at him. Dan, if you're reading this... I didn't forget!
Anyway, we can't keep everything. Maybe only having a portion of the things from our past makes us appreciate the few pieces that remain.

Loved this video. Like many of us here, I watch your videos here reminiscing the time I had a C64. Unfortunately, I sold mine, a little over 35 years ago. Time passes, got married and have had kids and even moved 3-4 hours away.
Not even 3 weeks ago, I had a crazy WOW nostalgia moment myself when I decided to buy a used (of course!) C64 with drive and monitor. In the lot of floppy disks that came with it, at least 3 floppies were originally mine with my handwriting still on the labels. I clearly remember those disks, too! I just couldn't believe that some of the floppies that I gave away with my kit when I was in my teens come back to me now, in my mid-fifties. Just WOW. Felt so weird and awesome at the same time.
So long story short: Yeah, I totally get the feeling!
    Thanks for the feels!

I feel truly honored to have been able to join you on such an incredible trip down memory lane...thank you.
I would have just turned 7 years old by Christmas of 1986 and around that time, would have been when my brother and I got our first of two C64s. As I write this, I am looking at an old photo I have of myself in one of my old bedrooms. We moved many times, but this was in Ashby-De-La-Zouch and the last place we lived before leaving the Midlands and moving permanently to Cornwall. I am perched on the edge of my red, tubular steel bed and behind me is the recessed bookshelves and wood panelling of our loft-conversion bedroom. Identifiable on my shelves are my 52 volume set of Joy of Knowledge (which I still have to this day and are a lasting reminder of my grandfather, who bought them all for me over several years and who would pass away unexpectedly, just a few years after this photo was taken), a large plastic penguin...which i recall wasa money box given away by Halifax Building Society, as well as the iconic, green spines of my Fighting Fantasy book collection. Sitting on the carpet and propped agaist the panelling are my 12" copy of Guns n' Roses "Use Your Illusion 2" and my brothers 12" copy of Pop Will Eat Itself's "X, Y & Zee"...placing this picture sometime after Sept 1991. Sadly, the TV atop the chest of drawers in front of me is just out of shot, so i cant see whats on it. But in my hands is my old Quickshot Python 1 and in front of my on ther floor is my old C64C...which was several years old and quite worn out by this point...you can even see that I have a cassette inlay card wedged in behind the number keys to keep them from sticking in. Soon after this was snapped, we moved to Cornwall and the tired old C64 was soon retired and replaced with a brand new Amiga 600.
Now at 44, I really miss those simpler days and the old computers that brought me so much joy.
Perhaps one day, i will take inspration from you and attempt to recreate the scene myself.

I was totally obsessed with it and wrote my own games as well as hacking commercial games to add cheats. In 1986 I saved up for a record player and CD and sold my computer. My school told me I was not good enough to study an O level in computers so I lost interest but those 3 years were the best times I ever had !

I just can't get over the joy I get from seeing others savor their nostalgia in the way it should be. I know far too many people who think of nostalgia as some sort of addiction that should be laid off. That you're only thinking back onto the times of old because you're not happy with what you have now. It's wonderful to see someone fully able to love what and where they are in life now, but still live for the memories they have.
If you're expected to lay off your memories then color me a failure because I will certainly not be leaving my precious memories behind. Neither should any of you. Keep it throughout your entire life. The more memories associated with it the better and all the more reason to stick to your guns.
Have a wonderful 2024, full of both new and old memories!

Man that was a long time ago for me. In... about five days I'll turn 42 so it would be a long time ago. I think we had a C-64 for about a year and a half (a used one) before I got my NES console, so MY nostalgia really starts with Nintendo and Mario, but still... Playing "Forbidden Forest" (scary!) and other games I can't even remember any more, I think we only had cheap knock off cheap games, no real mainstream titles. I guess "Bravestarr" might count? But I never got a true handle on that game. We had one cart game, "Soccer" that did not require loading at all. I have "fond" memories of sitting around waiting for games to load though. 😀 Nostalgia hits hard sometimes, glad you got your old desk back, have fun! 😉

I have absolutely no way of re-creating my childhood setup as everything was sold or is long gone now. Seeing you do this, let off enough pure nostalgia to bring back my own personal childhood memories, so I want to respectfully thank you for triggering that within me. What a feeling. Reliving at least some of the greatest of days is an incedible experience!

Replacing the C64 eventually with an Atari 1040stfm dual monitor/syntheziser/sampler setup with midi in the 90's.
The only system i re-bought and searched for in 2009/2010 was my very first system... the Philips Videopac series. (Odyssey in usa)
Got a complete set + extra models and seperate EU rarities in a display now and keeping it together. I can never get it this complete! Some things are getting rare and expensive too.

It's SO awesome you still have your childhood desk. My Dad currently has my childhood desk at his house. It was custom built by my Grandpa Bud (mother's side) for me. It was designed for my room I was living in at the time, which had a single wall that had wood paneling on it. (I suspect it was an accent wall.) Anyway, the desk will be mine again one day. What I really wish I still had though was the chair I used to have. So, my family moved to Western NC in 1987. Before that, we lived in Florida which is where NASA used to launch the space shuttle from. Well, NASA had a huge used furniture sale at some point in the very early 80s and my Dad picked up several used pieces of office furniture from them. One of those items was a very heavy metal office chair. It was a greenish color and the fabric was vinyl. The coolest part of the chair was that underneath the seat on the bottom of the chair it had "Property of NASA" painted on it. I loved that chair ... but alas, my mother threw it out after I moved out. That b*tch. (j/k) Anyway - fond nostalgic memories of playing hours of games on my old PCs (TI-99/4A through my first 486) sitting in that chair.

There's a video circulating on social media labeled smoething to the effect of "The sounds of the 80s" and it had electronic noises like the sound of a tape cassette or VHS tape ejecting, tones on a push button phone, computer keyboard clicks, etc. There is truly something magical about the sounds and smells of older electronics. There is a call and response if you will with these older electronics that newer electronics lack. I've been in IT Support since the release of Windows 3.1 and last year I setup a new office with all the latest computer equipment - what caught me off guard was how similiar the smell of new copier machines warming up smell exactly like the video arcades I visited as a teen!!! I was surpised at the rush of feelings and emotions. Nerd feelingz??? I dont know, but it was joyful as was this video. Thanks for sharing the joys of your childhood and Merry Christmas to you and your family. :)

Very very nice to see the part of you that evokes the little boy you were... These winter days, the warm lights of the house, the video game just downloaded from some BBS for the luckiest or the floppy received from a friend had an incredible charm. A mystery full of fantasy with every cover on a box, Ocean, Lucasfilms, etc etc... I admired your kitt's car, your smile when you got it. I smile, watching the footage of so many video games... Even your house, maybe in one or more of them still lives some of my intros from the time of Skidrow Group... when I was just a kid struggling in college and the best distraction was playing with assembler language and C++. You live to dream. In my opinion, everyone loves dreams and you dream a lot even though you are a man and a great technician.

Funny you should mention that, my tape copy of gunship would always fail loading after flying the mission I was doing, had my copy exchanged numerous times at the store I bought it from in Bristol but each one would fail to load after the mission!
So in the end out of frustration I had a friend who had a copy of gunship that worked so I used a cassette deck to copy his tape over my original which finally got my tape version loading correctly.
I really enjoyed playing gunship though when a few months later I got hold of an action replay cartridge that had the nova load ripper & transferred the game to disk.

I'm amazed at your memory, along with all the items you still have from childhood. We had to leave so much behind after my parents divorce when I was in highschool. We moved from a house to an apt and didn't have room to bring so much with us. So my mom would have basement sales to sell everything, to also help us with needed funds to move. But if I had the space and means to recreate my bedroom as a kid, I would. I loved my bedroom. As a geeky kid who prefered staying at home to read or tinker with stuff, it was my safe haven. So happy you found the old desk. Very cool. Happy holidays to you and your family. 🎄

    Amazing nostalgic memories!
I grew up in Wimbledon in the 80s and I was 14 in 1986. We made regular family trips to Richmond and there is a distinct possibility I purchased Ghostbusters for my breadbin C64 in that VERY SAME WHSmith… but it’s a little hazy.
And talking of hard drives, I remember when my parents bought me (after much nagging!) a 1541. It took WEEKS to arrive (tracking, what’s tracking?) and to this day I remember peering out of my bedroom window and hoping the post van would come. Appropriately the Nu Shooz song ‘I Can’t Wait’ was my earworm at the time. Great, great memories!
