The purpose of this video is to raise awareness in a fun way of technologies we may be about to lose, so that we don't. In 2023 UK government removed the requirement for phone companies to support facsimile machines, which means we're at risk of losing if not using a great technology that's more secure & robust than email, and works where there's no Internet. To help the cause I've become intrigued by the idea of receiving comments for such a modern medium as CZcams, via such a soon-to-be obsolete and some say archaic technology as fax, right down to getting an old copper wire POTS (plain old telephone service) landline installed. And to achieve this in the most nostalgic way possible I want to hunt down the exact model Brother or Samsung fax machine I had as a teen when I worked for Amiga music software company The Blue Ribbon Soundworks, and even do a fax repair on it if needed. Join me and let's go back to fax!

I don't have a fax but your video shocked me from the... Title. Congrats, it had to be very hard to get it working. I've loved the video.
As of January 2023 OFCOM changed the rules in the U.k with regards to who had permission to control fax signals and it’s only BT and KCOM (in Hull apparently) have access to fax signals but with BT now in the process of migrating all it phone networks to Internet protocol (ip) faxes will now almost certainly became obsolete
love the retro fax; I sent one from my real fax machine, and I hope it arrived, Dr. Ogg
hi loved the video as i do all of your videos and look forward to them every week . if it was not for your review of the s500 mini i would most likely have not bought one. am shocked to here that you get death threats. i would have thought anyone who left comments would only send positive ones as your videos are good and entertaining . this is my first time comment although I've been watching for years.
I’m glad I still have a fax machine. Yes, I have a fax machine embedded in my printer tied into a landline. Yes I have landline. Don’t pay the haters any attention. They have no imagination or appreciation for things they don’t have the bandwidth to understand.
I’ve been a supporter of your channel for a few years now - and I’ve loved every video you guys have produced. I know the hard work you put into these - and as I’ve said many times in the past, it’s absolutely appreciated and enjoyed. For all the bad comments, I hope you see that the good ones far outweigh them. Wishing you guys all the best.
We definitely do, thank you! It's helped me develop a thicker skin if anything 😅
How could anyone be so toxic as to send hate comments to any of you? Y'all are the best .
I couldn't wrap my head around that either. I would have thought you were one of the least offensive channels out there? (not excusing any kind of abuse but...)
On a funnier note, the telephone company sending out 2 trucks and guys who looked like they were suited up to build a nuclear bunker? Is all america like that?! :)
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
There are some sick people out there
You need to filter out these, but on single level, democracy, the more blocks the less energie they are getting back. Even this message is bad. My Dad always learned and told me, ignoring is the best thing to do. And i still believe in that. Throw the comments away like coffee filter ;) @@RetroRecipes
Love the reference and call :P Soo you don't like voip :P
That "have you never had a new customer before?" was savage. I could FEEL the frustration oozing through my speakers.
Great to see Ashley again! 😍
That phone call raised my blood pressure more than it should've.
Oh man, same here. I just felt disappointed by that phone call to Spectrum, especially considering how Peri talked about how saddened he felt about getting rude comments. I mean, getting upset that a VoIP company didn't provide landline service came off like someone who was incredulous because they couldn't understand that McDonald's didn't sell Whoppers.
@@nickfifteen you're a whopper.
Spectrum never did regular landline phones, so it's not surprising it couldn't work and they had no idea how to direct his request. Otherwise, it's just some random person who's barely trained who can't say no.
@@nickfifteen Yeah I felt genuinely sorry for the lady on the phone having to cop that nonsense. The VoIP service would've worked fine for fax and pining over a traditional central office landline is wild. Looks like the PSTN landline will go the way of the dodo in 2025 in the USA.
I genuinely adore all Retro Recipes videos but this one has given me a sour aftertaste.
Just sent you a fax comment (I think!). Have loved your channel for a long time - down to the little squeaky sound dub you use whenever someone is screwing in something! It’s brilliant, nostalgic, reassuring, and wholesome content. Please keep it up since we love the Retro Recipe family!
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
I really appreciate the channel. My 2¢: the comments section is a great place for learning - so please don’t disable it. Ignore hateful comments - just negative people who get pleasure from putting others down. Easier said than done, and that’s why we can’t have nice things. Just know that the rest of us will continue to enjoy all the nice things you show on the channel, and the great positive energy of the hosts and guests!
You're right, and I've learned that in some pieces of nasty feedback is a nugget of gold to be listened to. It has certainly helped me improve many things such as audio quality over the 5+ years.
As you said, here in Japan faxes are still pretty common. My mother-in-law used mainly faxes for her business until about three years ago. She said she preferred handwritten text. We still have one in the house, but most of her suppliers and customers have changed to email over the past couple years.
Some of my Uk customers still send us info via fax to pay their company’s wages. The rest phone up.
I've realized that a comment or two I've made in the distant past was rude and insensitive and I apologize for that. I've spent the past couple of years or so being more mindful of such things. You do good work, my friend.
That takes a lot to admit to and you have my instant respect for it. I don't specifically remember your comments, but am always happy to live in the present. Thank you for sharing all that.
"A new customer? This is unbelievable!" - 🤣
You made me spill my drink when you said that, LOL
Hahaha!
Retro Recipes, the only channel brave enough to deal with just the fax.
It's terrible that such a heartfelt and obviously well-meaning channel (and presenters) focusing on some of the most universal and innocent nostalgia possible is getting grief. Do what you need to do to keep your family safe and also know that there are a lot more of us out there that respect you and appreciate the way your content affects our lives for the better. Minimise the stress where you can, but please keep fighting the good fight.
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
Oh, my word… fine work on the Ghostbusters.
Who would have thought the humble fax machine would be making a comeback in 2024. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, thanks y'all.
I know a kind person when I see one, even if it's through a CZcams video. And you two absolutely fall into that category. How can someone not like you? I'm shocked, really. 😢 People sending death threats should be prosecuted, period.
Why would anyone say stuff like that on a channel that's all about retro the world can be a messed up place at times. Love the video and may even send a fax as not sent one for a long time 🙂. As always great work and am so looking forward to seeing what you bring us all next. You guys take care and have a great weekend🙂🙂
Thank you for your kind words! Have fun faxing!
Yes. It makes no sense for people to post hate comments here.
The conclusion: People posting hate comments make no sense. 😅
I agree, but it's even more absurd at non controversial spaces like this. If this were a political channel or something like that, it would be a bit more expected. I wish you, them and everybody else here a lovely holiday season. 🎄☃❄️ @@jan-willembruckmeyer4569
The process you went through to get a land line just made me appreciate that I never got rid of my land line a little bit more, thanks! 😅
I really dig this. I hope it stops the nasty messages. People think they're keyboard warriors and say things they never would in person.
Watching this from Austria and having German language adverts has added a whole new level. Awesome video. Well done on the PSU repair, I would have given up long ago...
I can only say now: WOW! Every episode is a WOW episode...
Wow another great video, I was so cross when you said people were leaving those horrible type of comments. *hugs* to you and your whole family.
I totally agree with you about the phone lines being a great backup. There will be a time when the internet goes down due to an emergency and/or power outage and most people will have no idea what is going in. Where I live we can no longer get land lines at all. So I have a few, nice SW & HAM radios so at least I might be able to hear what is happening if it's long term.
As far as fax technology, without getting too specific, there are still parts of the government that only uses secure faxes to transmit certain types of information as it's by far still the most secure in that arena.
The knight rider car still looks cool these days
I retired in 2016, and at that time my employer was still using fax machines. We had at least three, with different phone numbers. Also, about three years after that, I had to send a couple of faxes related to (I think) a real estate transaction, and had to go to a UPS Store in Nevada to get them to send it. Faxes are very much alive and well.
It's been a while since I had a landline, but my understanding is that the "baby Bells" essentially have a monopoly on telephone lines. So, you'd have to call your local phone company to get a line installed (that is, old school telephone line as opposed to VoIP).
Really cool episode which reminded me that I still have my old fax machine boxed away somewhere in the attic, its prehistoric and hasnt been used since the last ice age but dont fret as I have an ancient Brother A3 office printer that i picked up at a local charity shop for £15 that also has fax, hurrah...pity i dont have a landline anymore!
My fragile retro soul dances on calming 80's neon clouds every time you release a new video! How anyone could not love the fractic family is beyond my bits! Just yesterday when I was installing a new recepticle I instinctively made the little squeaking sound. You guys are faxing brilliant, wholesome and one of my absolute favourite channels and I feel privileged to share the same spacetime with you on this planet. Lots of love from the frozen tundras of Santa Claus land!
Hold on, I'll fax this! ;)
Thank you for your wonderful fax. It means a lot.
Sudden explosion in eFax accounts 😁 Thank you for a lovely episode. For some time I've been wanting to get a landline phone. Right now I'm considering a 'GSM Gateway', a box with a SIM slot and RJ11 socket. That is probably the closest I'll get to it. The 80's and 90's had some well-designed handset models.
Ladyfractic definitely giving some Zuul vibes at 19:41
I think most of those people sending particularly nasty comments as you described would: 1. not say it to you or your wife IRL and 2. have something deeply wrong with their own life and are trying to cope through psychological projection. To counteract the negative energy: I have always liked your videos and you folks seem like good human beings.
What a mission! Great job!
I don't usually do comments to videos but this video specially deserves an appreciation to all your work! Greetings to your lovely family.
I just love the dedication. It makes me well up.
Love it - I was not aware RTC phone lines were disappearing so fast. Very informative, and showing a tremendous patience in fixing this old Samsung. Just sent a fax, I hope it’s not too noisy although I paid attention to the timezone to not awake the family! Cheerz!
I was Civil Servant up until 2017 and we were still sending fax’s then. God bless the DWP.
I have watched your videos as well over the past few years and your content is always great, interesting, informative and engaging. Please keep these videos coming, I hope you both get more positive comments than negative and keep it all in perspective. You guys rock!
Truth be told, I would be fascinated to see if this pans out - and *how* it pans out.
My good friend Jim lives in Tulsa. He has still got his landline and two phones without electricity. He’s going to his grave with that line. It was incredible that his part of Tulsa was ravaged by a freak storm back in the summer of 2023 and his phone line was functioning straight through the resultant power outage. I’m sure he was thoroughly thankful to be an AT&T customer then.
This man be spitting straight…. Fax’s. I’ll see myself out.
Awesome video, i remember setting up a fax using a PC back in the day so my aunt could use it in her business
I really cant understand why people would be nasty towards you. you are the sweetest kindest people maybe they don't like beautiful people or just jealous. sending you both big hugs
I am impressed by you perseverance to save this fax machine, I would have given up long before this! I have used plenty of fax machines during their peak, but never found them as a piece of technology I would preserve.
I couldn't let the faxer beat me!
I used to work in the marine electronics industry and the local prawn fishing fleet LOVED their fax machines. This was back in the AMPS (analog) mobile phone days. It was well known that conversations on the analog phones could be intercepted (albeit illegally), so the fishing companies installed Motorola Cellular Connection boxes to their mobile phones. This simulated a good old fashioned 2-wire phone line into which a fax machine could be connected. While it was technically possible to decode a fax transmission as it was flying across the air... there was no evidence that anyone in the fishing fleet had the equipment to do this.
Because as we all know PCB stands for Prawn Catching Boat
@@RetroRecipes 100% correct 🙂
Also congratulations on your new addition to the family!
You are a legend and I smile when I see a video!!! Fellow UK and retro buff
So dang cool and thank you for the nostalgia trip! I used to work on POTS lines and worked on a lot of fax equipment in the mid 2000s. It never dawned on me that Local Exchange Carriers would try to phase this out. But then again VoIP is inexpensive for them.
I remember when you could call an answering machine at the electronics retailer, dial the part number for a component that you found in their gigantic catalogue, and the machine would call back to your fax and send the datasheet. That was top-of-the-line service, for a couple of years.
Another epic repair by Perifractic! That's cool you can still have a copper pair installed to your house. Where I live (France) the old copper network started to be phased out this year and it's no more possible to have an old RTC (PSTN) plug from network companies. Fax can still be used but through the IP network.
When I started work in 2003 I had a fax machine on my desk, the Samsung SF-3100, it was an inkjet fax machine so you didn't need expensive thermal fax paper. I hardly sent any faxes using it, email was taking over from the fax, though we did have one supplier who we had to send orders to via fax. We had it set, so that people had to ring up before and say I want to send a fax, because you used to get spam faxes, if you left it on auto answer there was the possibility of arriving next morning to find all your paper and ink wasted on spam messages.
Oh wow, a close relative to my fax then!
I love the way you do this videos. I don't care that much about fax- yet I watched the whole thing.
That's why I love this channel. Just the well-researched fax. 😉👍
You are two beautiful people sharing a small and interesting part of yourselves with the rest of the world through CZcams. The audience, we, are lucky that you share and engage with your wit and love of nostalgic tech, and the wonder and innocence of childhood.
Maybe just dont read the comments and get on with your lives irregardless? Or remember, that there are many many more people that appreciate you giving them a lovely escape from their daily grind than those that don't. Peace ✌️❤
Thank you.
It is all so sad. Internet community used be so different in the early days. Mostly geeks. The sense of wonder and excitement... Made such great friends. Now it is all full of toxity.. cannot have any intelligent conversation. It is really depressing. Thanks keeping the dream alive for the better world with hope and wonder.
That is some serious dedication - you must have replaced every component on the board? Glad you got it working in the end, knew you would, you always do! :)
Keep up the great work. By the way PCB stands for Phax and Call using Bloody expensive phone line.... doesn't it?
Thank you! I replaced every capacitor, and a handful of other parts. Thankfully not everything though. PCBWayyyy!
I never heard a voice like this guy talk so deep and so slow this is a real voice
I remember using supervoice software many years ago for answering machine and faxing. It was brilliant.
Some people are subconsciously jealous that they do not have the passion or discipline to create something themselves. So, often they lash out and try and tear someone down who does, thinking it's the closest they can come to being creative if their overt criticism is able to affect and change the behavior of someone who is. People complaining about your dogs, like they **need** the content you create without your dogs, is a clear example of such a type or person.
Brill as usual. Proper blast from the past. There will always be haters, thats a reflection on them not you. Keep up the good work.... all the best from Manchester, UK x
Worked for the state public safety agency here in TX for over 30 years. The first seven were in the communications service handling telephone calls from the public and other LE agencies, lots of faxing documents. That was in the mid 80s. There as a second device duplexed with the fax, called a TDD, it was used to communicate with deaf persons. Maybe TDD was the precursor for texting? Still keep a fax machine in storage just in case it might be needed, next to it is a box of ballpoint pens and several pads of lined tablets. I really enjoy your videos!
greetings from germany... we still use fax for a lot of official stuff which requires signed documents.
It just works.
We still use faxes at work. Although we use e-fax instead of actual fax machines. Despite the availability of e-mails and secure document capabilities customers feel better sending sensitive stuffs via fax when in fact we get them via e-mail from e-fax service. Although the e-mails are secured via TLS during transmission to our e-mail servers. Faxes will be around for few more years.
This is one of the best videos you've done. It really had everything.
Fax you very much!
Punkt phone is a great simple alternative to the modern day smarthpone. It is streamlined to allow just text messages and calls, but also allows for hotspot so you can connect a computer to the internet if needed when traveling.
Here in Australia they got rid of the copper phone lines a few years ago with the rollout of our national broadband network. In some areas they do still use the copper lines themselves for broadband, either fibre to the node or fibre to the curb (more correctly kerb, not curb as in "restrain"). Because they had to cut the lines and connect them to broadband node, they no longer connect back to the exchange, so they can't be used for a POTS phone line. And in areas where they upgraded to HFC cable or fibre, they simply no longer offer POTS phone services, so you can't get one even though the copper lines are still there.
Actually, a few years ago I repurposed some old Cisco gear to build a dial-up simulator. It was basically my own personal dial-up ISP, but I was using digital modems so I could get the full 56Kbps speed rather than the 33.6Kbps maximum of a regular analogue modem. Unfortunately it was pretty useless since there were no longer any POTS phone lines to dial into it (or rather ISDN lines, since it was digital rather than POTS), but I could connect a 56K modem directly and get the full speed.
The 60’s film Bullit has a scene with a fax machine that I just find hilarious for some reason.
Such a wonderful Idea, man wish it was easier thing to set up, almost want one for myself
Ten years ago I replaced a multi-function printer for a non-profit I used to volunteer at. The multi-function had print/ copy/ scan/ fax features. The VP of the non-profit saw the printer had a fax option, and wondered why we weren't using it? If any receipts were sent, they were received by email. No need to pay for a land line that requires a long distance plan to be useful.
Hi RetroRecipes family, I enjoy your videos and lighthearted humor. Yes indeed, turn the other cheek with those cheeky people, they are just trying to dampen the good energies of your channel. peace love light
For the first bit of December 2007, the internet at my college was down! Not only that, but my parents wanted me to send them my Christmas list! What did I do? I typed my list on a college computer, printed it and after asking a staff member, I used one of their fax machines to fax it to my Dad's then-workplace!
Really enjoyed this one. After a few tries today, looks like I got a fax through. How cool! Don't have a POTS line, but have been successful in sending a fax using a magic-jack and my printer/fax.
You can absolutely use a phone jack fron a VoIP system, and have tone while the power is out via a back up battery
You two just keep getting better. Thanks!
Some years ago I live in Japan for about six months and fax machines were still regularly used in a lot of industries, especially in banking.
Accountant here: I've got two faxes 6 feet from me. One on a dedicated 24/7 copper wire; the other is a backup ready to use if the primary goes down.
I sent you a "4-D" fax. Enjoy!
Received with sincere fax!
Reminds me of a time when tech enthusiasts had the following setup.
A giant copying machine
A "small" office laserprinter about the same size as the copying machine
A scanner the size of a VCR
A telephone/Fax machine
A pager
And a brick cellphone with about 30 minutes of batterylife to call their friends and say "You will not believe where I'm calling from" before the battery whent flat.
I also love these wholesome nostalgic videos
I was lucky when I bought a Portastudio from Canada that it has a jumper you could reposition to swap back from 110v to 240v. Good job I thought of that before simply plugging it in in my excitement! Great repair job. The printer at work used to receive faxes and most of the time all we got were the equivalent of spam emails today. Offers of cheap holiday packages where you had to send the money off first and stuff like that. Beware of anyone trying to sign you up for a time share deal on a Spanish island! As for stupid people with idiotic comments, sadly these knobheads live amongst us but Darwin usually ensures they don’t live long and prosper. Keep up the great work. Sorry for the long comment but I have to mention the hard drive on the Amiga you showed, that I lusted after as a kid. I think it was 240Mb if memory serves. I did end up with a Amiga 600 with an internal 200Mb drive! Geoff Crammond’s F1 GP was the first game to reside on that!
Interesting episode, have sent faxes only couple of times in my life, last time probably over 20 years ago. Back then used occasionally also an old school copymachine, but even then, majority of the customers were serviced using email and phonecalls.
I live in building which was built in 2005, and this place doesn't have anymore traditional phoneline wall sockets but RJ45 socket or something like that. I actually had shortly a landline phone, and had to use converter piece, as the old landline phone had just old school wall connector (3-pins here in Finland at least).
Loved faxes, my dad had one, the best way to contact companies at that time to complain about invoices, cancelling subscriptions. Had a Fax modem hooked up to my Amiga as well, but rarely used it. Perhaps I should send one now :)
So much inter-force police work was done via fax; back when we had internal email systems, faxes would be sent between forces and then transcribed into email.
That was genius with the Ghostbusters clip!! 🤣
Heheh thank you
I love this channel keep up the great job
the last time i sent a fax was 2013, the office i worked in regularly used them.. seemed crazy at the time considering everyone was emailing. great episode
Your videos have such a soothing retro vide
We never had a fax at home, but used it a bit on my first job. But I didn't like the rolled up paper, it was flimsy and hard to archive. A fax machine that printed on A4 paper was easier to use when you got quotations or work orders sent over.
A great episode and a fun walk down memory lane. Sadly we don't have copper any more out here were I live. It isn't supported any longer.
Got a STRONG nostalgia rush at 9:10 when your version of 'Such A Shame' comes on. "Number me with rage, it's a shame....'
A great project and a great video, thankyou :)
Wow, that was a pretty massive project for such a simple thing as a fax machine. Not sure which was more surprising, that you found the exact model of fax machine that you used to have, from Germany of all places, or that you managed to teach it how to print faxes in English so quickly. Either way, congratulations on both.
Seriously though, they're charging way too much for that phone line. But I guess they can charge whatever they want since apparently nobody else can provide one.
Such a fun and interesting video.
- I can see under your eyes that the nights are short. Babyfractic is handful I guess. But Ladyfractic is radiant!
- Ashleyfractic !!!
- What an amazing job on the connector and then on fixing the PCB components. Your perseverance and troubleshooting skills never cease to amaze me.
I recall having an OKIfax in New Zealand back in my first job way back in 1987. Faxes have still been in use by Chemists or pharmacys for prescriptions. I have a Canon multi function printer that can be used as a fax machine. But as I no longer have a landline. It's a feature that might never be used.
You don’t need a copper telephone wire installed. I use Vonage VOIP to operate all my vintage landline phones (even rotary!) and my fax machine!
Whilst that is correct, the legislation applies to the newer VoIP lines which means they don't have to require the needed bitrate, but as mentioned I also just wanted to do it the original way :)
wow a lot of components needed replacing 😅 good job
Excellent vid - the circuit repair certainly took me back a couple of decades ! ( so many fried resistors missed on the first pass... so many... ) I have a FAX machine lurking here somewhere... hmmm...
As for the negative commentary - I'm truly saddened with that but be assured you've got a lot of love here for what you and Lady Fractic do, demonstrate and stand for. Merry Christmas from mine to yours.
Great job on the fax machine. Regarding the haters, I am sorry you have to deal with them. Take care of yourselves.
Das is Good! Yeah! Love your work as always :) and the amount of time just to create this one video.
Ah, Spectrum! Always a joy.
Another great video. I don't often read the comments and was sad to hear you speak of the abuse you receive 😢. Keep smiling and know that your content is loved by many😊
Great video, Perifractic! Love your dedication and you practical midnset. Never had to mess up with Faxmachines back in the day, but even with no interest in this technology from my side, you made a very interesting and compelling video about this topic. I like the walking araound and talking in nature footage. And coming from Germany myself: "Ja, Ja, das ist sehr gut! Prost!". Wish you all the best my friend!
Danke! Prost!
Please don't acknowledge the negative comments, ever! Been sub'd to u for years and fully understand your vids and perspective. Keep going geezer, even if I have to buy a fax machine 😂 Although we have a few gathering dust in the office 😅
I recall having a fax machine at home in the 90s in the UK. Felt I really hacked the system by buying a box that would connect to the tel socket and the phone/fax machine to that. This was so I didn't have to have a seperate line. Call would come in, little box would determine if a voice call or fax and direct accordingly. It was suprisingly fast and if a voice call, person at the other end was completely unaware and not kept waiting. edit: I also remember Blue Peter showcasing fax machines in the 80s. They had 2 in the studio. 1 presenter drew a simple picture and sent it to the other machine...was totally blown away by it.
I really love your videos and as a fellow brit i admire your calm soothing voice in a british accent!
Ignore the hate!! In all honesty , i have never seen anyone say a bad thing about you , so please dont worry about it!😊
lmao “no I am a new customer, have you never had a new customer before”
bless you, it must be so hard with nasty youtube comments, i know many youtubers suffer this. I would find it extremely difficult to deal with. You and your family do a great job here :)
ps man that was a lot of work to get all that working! I spent months getting exactly the same Sony stack system my grandfarther had when i was a child, i went through a similar mission however minus the pstn line
