It must be an age thing. I am also from January 73. I can't get rid of my phone yet as I want to be able to share my moments with my mother that lives 2000 km apart from me. But getting rid of facebook already made a huge difference. And if I really want to have quality time, I just switch off my phone.
The funny thing is, I am a tech enthousiast and used to buy a phone every two years, but now I am already on the same phone for over 4,5 years. Maybe age does eventually calm down the fomo :D

I did think you know 'isn't this burying my head in the sand?' but but no, its actually a recognised mental health practice to clear your mind and start the day in the best possible way. I remember when phones were getting smaller and smaller and I was waiting for the day we could a tiny phone like in Zoolander, but then those damned iPhones came out and changed the whole landscape and phone's became big giant bricks again. The other awesome thing about those old Nokia's is the battery would last for days between charges, you could nearly always just step out and not have to worry about how much charge was remaining.

I will admit that, even though I had a difficult time with the phone keypad, I have also had a tough one with virtual keyboards on smart devices. If they could revert to building flip phones that were loaded with (most of) the same tech that goes into smartphones or tablets, it would not be a backstop. It would - just be right.

ive started to replace my "always on/smart" tech with retro alternatives and mainly going back to old tech like my handspring visor, my casio calculator watch, i bought a real camera about 3 years ago now and i recently bought an old ibm laptop that has no ability to connect to the internet and no wifi or bluetooth. im beginning to realise that all this new smart tech has a dark nefarious intention. i will soon be properly etherneting my house and turning off wifi altogether. you know something is wrong when a lifelong tech nerd freak starts abandoning new tech for old!

I totally agree. I'm 53yo. I've been a teck geek since I was a kid. First in school with a portable computer (Radio Shack PC-1), first to have a word processor (Commodore 64 with Paperclip), game watches, etc. In adulthood, I was the always the tech go-to guy solving problems and setting up systems, etc, etc.
Now I've resurrected my original C64 system, my Apple watch is now a retro Casio, my stereo is a vintage 100% analogue 2 channel system with tons of my original vinyl to go with it.
Life is good once again. 😉

@@roberttoews2775 yes im going back to physical music media too like records and tapes and have been looking for a good 80s stereo setup for a while now (im fussy hehe) with todays streaming services artists only make $0.007 per track play, so even if your song was played 10 million times, the artist has only made $7k in royalties, a far cry from the old vinyl/tape days and what artists got! everything about today is upside down and inside out and this is forcing me to return back to retro gear.

Great update, I like the behind the scenes showing all the hurdles. I was a little disappointed by the new Razrs too, and like you said the current models just look like a Samsung. I had a Krzr(krazer) back in the day, slightly thinner, more powerful than the razr, loved that phone. We even had a Sony C905 at one point, with 8 megapixel! camera on it and great sound with megabass!, it was mega-cool :) Love the point you're making about 'unplugging', even for someone super tech oriented. Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

My solution: i don’t take my smartphone everywhere i go, and even IF i have it in me, it’s basically on silent mode if i have family & friends around. I have some settings activated so that ill family members can reach me, and if you call multiple times (= urgent) you get trough eventually. But messages, normal non-urgent calls, apps & stuff? I don’t care. I read it later when i have time for it, and if necessary call back. That works perfectly. (My small one has an tablet, too - especially for kids. But use is limited to 15-20 Minutes a day, and only if an older family member is joining. Works great, too) PS: Schok phones are marketed to the older generation here in Germany, that’s why they have the big symbols and the charging dock. Not a bad device 😁👍

Best phone I ever owned was the Sony CMD J6. Stylish, one of the 1st phones you could use songs for call & message tones & most importantly the jog wheel, the single best phone input interface ever invented.
I truly loved that phone & it got so much attention because it was different to the Nokia's that everyone & their uncle had.
Second best was the Nokia 5310 Xpress music (actually the phone the case represented in your video). The best music player of any phone I've used, amazing sound quality. Also a very stylish phone. I still have the Xpress, I need to find a charger for it.

I'm in the UK and my Nokia brick (3330) still works! It's not quite minimalism since I tend to carry both that and a modern phone, that way I call and text with my SIM in the Nokia and take photos or satnav on the smartphone (also internet when there is WiFi), but it feels good to not be buried in what everyone else is doing when I'm on holiday, for example. My main issue is that the Nokia was left with the original battery in it, and over the years it did something chemistry and actually corroded holes in the copper pads on the PCB where the battery pogo pins touch. I did a bit of repair because the pads are nice and big and took solder, but if you squeeze it just wrong (like when texting) you can sometimes momentarily disconnect the battery and the phone dies. I need to look inside again and try a better repair.

I've been using a Nokia 6310i since a year now. (It also has bluetooth for my car). I only use my iphone on specific occasions like a holiday with the family. I use applications like whatsapp or social media only on my PC when i'm at my home office. In the beginning it felt like I was missing out on something, but now it really feels like the best decision, because a smartphone never made me happier than I already was before I used one.

I don't think you need a flip phone or any retro tech to do this, but I hold the sincere belief that in 20 or 30 years, the people who're mindful of how they use technology and somehow manage to retain a healthy relationship with it will be the only ones with any chance of employment.
These kids browsing "phantom phones" that're not even there will likely end up completely useless tech zombies unless there is some sort of major outside intervention.
With every passing year I realize more how blessed I am to have been born in the 80s and grown up during the 90s.
When I hear that a lot of kids can't even grasp the concept of folders on a computer nowadays I think that eventually anyone with programming skills or any knowledge or expertise that allows them to do any sort of maintenance work will be regarded with the same level of awe that a literal wizard would be.
The rest will be browsing through thousands of mundane TikTok videos every day, brains completely fried while AI somehow keeps them alive.
So anyone who keeps themselves in decent shape and develops their mind and skills until then will be walking as a god amongst eternally slumbering, utterly worthless sheep.

The Kyocera 902kc/903kc is also an option (though admittedly it seems the Schok Classic may be better in quite a few ways). It is certainly a lot more fiddly with initial setup, some parts requiring a computer for mirroring. Once it's running though, you have most of the same features in a gorgeous Japanese flip-phone style. IMO it's a great looking phone and I've been really happy with mine. Most lightweight apps that I've used work great, though apps do need to be side loaded (again, with a computer) to be installed.

Glad you found a solution for yourself.
Personally if it’s something where I don’t want to be distracted/disturbed I set up the focus modes so DnD and sometimes I’ll even turn theatre mode on my apple watch on as well.
Also I optimised the apps that used to distract me the most so that I look at them significantly less.
However I used to occasionally switch to a feature phone a month just so I could detox from a few things.
My main takeaway was one I missed having all my music so occasionally wanna buy an iPod… also I didn’t quite realise how reliant on the internet I was.

Not sure if someone already suggested it, but you could use a mobile (3G/4G/5G) router with those Korean fliphones, together with some VoIP app. You'd have to carry around two devices (which is not ideal) but you bypass the device's reliance on any bands because the phone is connected to the router over wi-fi.

I have seen a lot of videos about people trying to use less their phones and testing several devices trying to find the middle ground between what they want versus what they really need.
Honestly I solve this problem (for me) by disabling all non-essential notifications, everything that isn’t literally a call from my mother won’t make a noise on my phone.
A distinction I also made is having 2 phone lines, one personal for family and one for work, each line with their respective ringtones to easily known what the call is.
Using the focus mode on iOS (or having multiple users on android) would be also a interesting option, like on work mode/user only work apps are visible and on person only my person apps are visible, maybe a family mode with only the basic apps like câmera and phone so won’t be tempted by social midia during the lunch.

I got away from most of what a smartphone brings by using a Lumia 950 for 5 years from release until the iPhone 13 Mini came out. I only swapped then because for about a year at that point the screen had a crack from hitting gravel (not visible during use really nor could it be felt), but mainly the battery was getting pretty bad and the replacements I found (yes, easy to replace battery just popping the back off like the good ole days) were new old stock and didn't really last long either. Using a Windows phone gave me a solid web browser, email client, text messaging, phone, Microsoft and Google's authenticators, and everything else I truly needed without much else offered (I don't use social media so that wouldn't matter).
Tbh, I miss the 950 and Windows phone. It never slowed down, Edge worked really well on it for CZcams since Google wouldn't release a CZcams app, and in general it was a great user experience for me over the Android and IOS devices I had before. I want an Android flip phone like those from Japan, but with a physical keypad/keyboard with the same setup as the blackberry pearl for typing. Give it midrange hardware on par with the Redmi Note Pros, sell it for around 250 USD like the Note Pro, and I'd buy one in a heart beat.

I have a really nice modern mirrorless camera setup (Lumix G9) with a collection of great expensive lenses. I love it, but I wanted something a bit "retro" that was the same mount for lenses and harder to use (fun photo challenge....) So I picked up a Lumix GF1 locally for ~65 bucks in great shape and it is interchangeable lens. I then got on KEH and bought a super tiny/thin 14mm "pancake" lens for it. It has been the perfect "in pocket" camera, with great looking pics that are usable in any modern application. I enjoy it's limitations (fixed focal length lens, limited iso performance, mechanical shutter.) and I am in the whole setup for less than a couple hundred bucks with the benefit of it using my existing lenses if I ever wanted to.

I'm curious why you didn't decide to use your apple watch as your daily driver! Especially with the Ultra! I spent a very long time looking for a LitePhone/Flip phone style device to reduce distractions, and I had similar criteria - I wanted to be able to dictate messages, connect to iMessage while doing so, able to make NFC payments at restaurants and stores, and offer public transit directions to get around my city. I looked and looked, and every promising find was missing an essential function in the end. Then I realized I had a device that could do all of that already, with much fewer distractions than my phone, and it was literally strapped to my wrist the whole time! I keep my phone plugged in at home and leave the house with just my apple watch and my airpods. It's been remarkably freeing.
