- Benelli Nova vs Super Nova 12ga Pump Shotgun Review The Benelli Nova and Supernova pump shotguns have been super highly suggested so I figured we'd take a look at them together! Is the Supernova worth it? Will the Nova suffice? Let's see which Benelli will rise to the top. Let's go!

Had my Nova in 12ga for 2 years now and prolly 1500 rounds of clay shooting and hunting, never had a day of trouble out of it. Its been dropped, handled roughly, wet and shot dirty. It's been great. I will say the trigger does seem to lighten up after a while.
My nova shoots 3.5" shells. I will tell you, it is a super tight patter. My improved cylinder is the size of a typical improved modified.
Yes, my Nova shoots 3ยฝ, too. Blindside. Magnums will let you know you're alive!
Mine shoots 31/2 inch shells, too. I have the short barreled version set up for home defense. A reliable, tough defensive scattergun that comes with ghost ring sights for $30 more than a slug barrel costs for my Remington model 1100? This was a no brainer for me.
ALL NOVA SHOOT 3 1/2! Did yโall even watch the video?
@@DeadHoosierjust shot 3.5โ Winchester #3 shot all morning. Didnโt do any damage to teal than 3โ and didnโt kick anymore than 3โ. THE ONLY difference I noticed was it was a lot louder. But I hear this all the time about 3.5โ Some men are just boys I guess.
I can't believe how much I can hear those guns " grinding" when you cycle them, my nova is silky smooth, with the barrel pointed up , I can bump action release and the action will slide open under it's own weight almost silently.... Love that gun as much as my wing master
Field stripping is one of the top things to me when Iโm considering any gun, they nailed it with this and pretty much all their shotguns.
Have my Nova for 18+ years w/ over 100k rounds of trap and a handful of seasons chukar hunting w/ no issues at all. Outshoot competitive trap shooters and do well w/ sporting clays. Perfect gun in the field too
I cannot understand all the criticism here, itโs a bloody $500 gun that goes bang every time you pull the trigger. The trigger is a little heavy, but hell if itโs in your budget, you practice with what you have.
Probably better than my Stevens Savage 12.
Alot these gripes seem to me irrelevant
The Nova and SuperNova are designed primarily as law enforcement and military guns. This is reflected in the simple and rugged design, down to the trigger. The larger opening of the Super trigger guard is for using gloves when needed. The heavier trigger pull is evident in many military firearms (think military ar vs a high speed match trigger). They may not be the best gun for shooting a bunch of clays, but Iโll bet my life on my SuperNova 18โ tac model being tough enough to go bang every time, even if I just used it to smash open a door.
I love the magazine shutoff button on my Nova. Makes it easy to clear the gun if I'm climbing fences hunting or grabbing decoys without having to completely empty the gun.
On my 4th season with my Super. Agree with all your gripes but I will say, she goes bang every single time and has never let me down!
Iโve had my Benelli Nova 20ga for 18 years never one single issue. The magazine cutoff on the forearm is great for crossing fences or if your shotgun I loaded with duck loads and a group of geese are coming in you can quickly swap the chambered round.
I have a camo Super Nova I use for hunting deer in our buckshot-only areas, and occassionally for turkey. They're good for that. But compared to my other pumps, they are thick, heavy, and rattle a a bit. Mine also shoots a little high. It hits differently enough from my other shotguns that I've stopped using it that much. If it was the only shotgun I shot, I'd get used to it. But when one switches back and forth, a gun that shoots higher than all the rest can throw me off. As far as durability and build quality, it's great. It just does have draw backs, weight and bulk being the most significant. I also have a Super Nova tactical with peep sights. That thing is the most accurate shotgun with foster-style slug I have ever owned. It will print three in a coverleaf at 50 yards. I can break stationary clays with it at 75. Good guns they are.
I have a Nova in 20 gauge and it only comes out in foul weather upland hunting It fits my oldest son really well and on occasion he likes to bring it out on the small sporting clays course. Not pretty but itโs functional.
Great review. Been waiting for this one and wasn't disappointed!
Thanks for doing this! It's true, he reads the comments for shotgun review suggestions! Fantastic!
Good objective format for affordable guns, thanks for sticking with the reviews
I just can't get over how these shotguns look like toys and a mossy 500 has tons of accessories, reasonably priced along with looking like a real shotgun.
The trigger does get better with time. Had my Nova going on 16 years or so and the trigger measures about 6 pounds 8 ounces
Thanks for a thorough review and one that is definitely 100% honest with the pros & the cons too [some youtube channels don't do that!]
I love my benelli pump shotgun I find absolutely nothing wrong with it. 10+ years and it goes bang! Every year. Just hunting purposes works great. 0 issues.
I got to handle the 18(.5) in versions last week of both. I was impressed.
I bought my wife a nova 20 and only paid $300 new, liked it so much bought the supernova also. Wow assembly is a breeze. Good value
I Love your reviews. They are informative and fun. Please do one on the CZ 1012.
Bought my 26" Supernova last summer, hardly shot anything else since. Smooth shooting, waterproof (I live in the UK) and half the price of my M2. It's good fun to shoot and does turn heads at the clay grounds, no d*cking around with cartridge sizes, thoroughly recommend them.
Supernova has been flawless for me, used for duck and turkey, 8# weight and comfort-tech stock tame recoil. Easy to field strip and clean. Weatherproof and secure grip, chambered shell release button a plus. Forearm rattle not a factor unlike the Nova (have that gun too). Ugly but beautifully engineered at its price point.
I was all set to get my 8 year old the nova compact 20 gauge for his first shotgun, and this helped convince me to aim a little higher.
This video is a few months old which can be a lifetime on CZcams, but I think chamber sizes need clarification. It was alluded to but not addressed early in the video and at roughly 19:05, it was stated the SN is worth it if 3.5s are important to the buyer. BOTH the regular Nova and SuperNova are chambered for 3.5s in 12ga. I've owned a few regular Novas and only bought a SN due to getting a killer deal on one. I never had a huge issue with the Nova trigger guard with light gloved hands when I was duck hunting (YMMV) so I never thought about going to the SN. Having owned both, I couldn't see much recoil difference. Unless one wants to swap out stocks to pistol grip, I say save the money and stick to a Nova.. or save the money and put it towards a semi-auto!
Outside of tactical/defensive duties, Browning BPS is the only pump I would recommend for clays/hunting use if a quality semi or o/u is out of budget. They are lifetime and heirloom quality. I have two, one in 20 and one in 12, and they are going nowhere. Still Japanese built by Miroku. If you can get the last gen even better. Seems the newer ones have gotten a little less refined finishing but at least straighter stock and bigger trigger guard. Just wonderful shotguns if you could only have one gun forever and only have less than $1000 to spend on a do it all reliable shotgun.
This is the advice that anyone looking for a pump gun needs to hear. My BPS has been solid for 12 years for me and I'll never sell it. They have gotten more expensive over the last decade but they are worth it.
Couldnโt agree more regarding the BPS, great shotgun.
Cabella sold me a humble 18 inch Nova for 630 Canadian dollars tax included, 18 inch is balanced comparing to the 28 inch Nova, my Nova is a great investment for the knuckle heads trying to break in the house, we shot the Nova just yesterday, it is a light bitch for me, trigger is easy to pull for me, the 18 inch Nova barrel kicks like a mule but, I love short barrelled gauges, Nova shot well outta the box , yup, out of the box, no oiling out of the box. Benelli I respect them a lot, Nova will keep any home safe, Nova design is simple and reliable as they are affordable.
I don't care for the Super Nova, they are almost at 1K CDN with tax so, Boss Lady ordered the Beretta A400, that fixed the jumping Super Nova problem. Thanks for these videos, they are helpful, great job.
These videos lack nothing, love it. Nice work!
Love your content! Have you thought about doing a review on some .410 shotguns? I recently have been buying a few .410โs because of the challenges of shot capability over the larger 20 and 12 options.
I just bought the Stoeger P3000 for less than half the price and I love it, the are awesome!!!
Thanks for the review. Would love to see your take on Mossberg Maverick 88. Very cheap but looks all right. IMO, Itโll be great if you chose the one with shorter (slug) barrel for a change.
I own the supernova. Itโs a good gun for me. It took me some time to get use to it. I agree it is chunky and tough for me to use. I am 5โ5โ with hunting gear on it can be a bit tough and kind of in the way. Some days early on with the gun I fought it and hated it. I looked into the smaller butt pads Benelli made but got use to us and now I kind of enjoy it. Love the features. I would buy it again in the same price range. I now own a franchi affinity 3 5
Thanks for a fun and informative video. Do you have any suggestions for alternate sight options for the Nova?
Remington 870 poor ejection caused me to try a Benelli Nova and I do like the Nova it is reliable but I don't like the plastic follower in the Nova so I called Benelli and they told me I could use a aluminum follower instead and it made a difference it throws those heavy 3.5 inch turkey loads out a lot faster. My shotguns I use now are Mossberg and Benelli. The Remington can be made reliable you have to change out the mim extractor and put a machined metal extractor and put a heavy shell lifter spring in it.
I own the 28" SuperNova and shoot primarily trap and sporting clays. I've found that it's a good entry level gun, but there are obvious flaws. The fiberoptic can be distracting and it's awkward when shooting multiple rounds. I think this is a great starter gun for someone entering into shooting hobbies, but this won't be my forever gun. Appreciate your review!
Same...I find that with the rock hard recoil pad and the heavy trigger pull, it causes me to flinch. I still bring it with me incase a friend wants to shoot it but I mainly just shoot my 870 now.
Unscrew the fiber optic and replace with a brass bead for less than 5$. By far the toughest most reliable pump on the market. They are tanks
What did you like better between the Binelli Supernova and the Winchester SXP. It will be my first shotgun, for clay shooting.
thanks for clearing that up for me , i just purchased a used Beneli nova the regular one but it has been camo'ed i gave $300 for it and it has a super full turkey choke in it so that's one that i don't have to buy but that's all it came with so i've got to buy a few chocks for it which is no big deal i just want a choke that'll do it all but i guess that's not possible , i guess i need a full chock for buckshot deer hunting and a choke i can shoot a slug through and a regular chock for squirrel and bird hunting anyway i think it's a solid shotgun for my applications "hunting" i added a $20 sling also that's a must for a long gun it's the ruberry sling so it doesn't slide off of my shoulder while walking , i do like my Rem. 870 better , great video and i did see the video with you and the Jerry M another great video
the best reviews bother as always. please if you have time review 20g vs 20g one interia vs gas
My Nova is at least 20 years old,not often used, still like Brand New.I like the simplicity but one thing you did not mention is what it's like to carry.Mine is LOUD in that the forearm is prone to RATTLE so extra effort is required to walk quietly while turkey hunting. The trigger pull is fine for a field shotgun as I would think it gives a little more safety as it's definitely not a hair trigger.I'm probably the only person who managed to jam one while hunting though, gotta make sure to pull that clunky forearm all the way back before going forward again..........also,the recoil from a turkey loads is substantial but that's all it's ever fired so I wouldn't really know.
I have a supernova with a retractable stock, and a 18 1/2 inch barrel love it
Would love to see a review between the nova/supernova vs an 870.
The heavy trigger is for safety. Accidental discharge is not very forgiving. Plus if you drop it on the butt, with a safety accidentally off it is less likely to discharge. Remember, itโs a field gun.
Run super nova's, they are tanks, not a bad thing for serious water fowling...Got rid of a super blk eagle 2 because it didn't always cycle. Also a Versa max waterfowler pro... The Super Nova always shoots...Even in sub o weather...Killed birds with it in - 28 degrees last year, it always works - Wouldn't trade them for any other shotgun for hardcore water fowling...Rob Roberts can tweak them, and fancy and smooth them up if you want it custom... I think they are the best rough condition waterfowler out there...The forearm button that allows to only remove the shell in the tube, and not drop another into the ramp, is totally legit-
I recently bought my supernova and i love it, i love the position of the slide release. My one complaint is the slide noise when you rack it is very plastic ๐
Nearly all of them sound like that now. Not one shotgun made out of plastic sounds like a iconic old-school shotgun with real wood. I've had a Remington and a winchester sxp made out of plastic and they all sound funny when racking shells thru them.
@@briantaylor8407 ๐๐
Damn good reviews
Got a question for you. You measured the weight of the pull on the supernova for the trigger. You said it was over 8lbs to pull. I just picked up the Benelli Supernova realtree max 5 yesterday. Is there a way to modify or change the trigger if wanted. I have not shot it yet. This is also my first pump action. I don't have any experience shooting a pump yet. I was looking at a Winchester SXP waterfowl camo edition and a Canuck 12 guage pump vs the Benelli Supernova
I feel the same way you do about my Nova. Now it just sits in the cabinet because I feel a lot more confident and comfortable shooting my 870. I plan on entering into the world of semi's, but still can't decide on whether I want to get the Sx4, franchi affinity, or browning silver. Your reviews have helped a lot with the decision making process. Look forward to more reviews!
i got a sx4 and my opinion is one of the best semi shotgun got it 3 week ago got 2000 round never add a miss to feed and its my 6 semi and regret not to try the sx4 first
@@ericrivet9400 yea that's what I'm leaning towards. Got a chance to hold them not too long ago at the store and the sx4 to me fit me the best. Thanks for your feedback and recommendation
I love the browning silver itโs just hard to find it these days after they were discontinued. Which is why Iโm now deciding between the browning maxus or the beretta a400 xtreme.
Have the supernova 11 years, not a single jam or hiccup other than my short stroke here and there. It's a heavy gun though (3.6 kg/8 lbs) if you're hunting and walk alot, you'll feel it
Yup I got the supernova great shotgun๐
I had a Supernova. Ultimately got rid of it. Functioned fine. But the recoil was harsh in spite of the Comfortech stock, the trigger was heavy and mushy, the pump feel and sound was a whole lot of plastic, overall weight was at least 1 pound too heavy, aesthetically it's just too chunky around the receiver and trigger guard. Just too many things I didn't like about it.
I'd take an old good-condition Winchester model 12 over these any day. Nice metallic sound and feel, better trigger, better swing, better stock.
I owned a Super Nova years ago when they first came out. Had a couple issues with and overall wasnโt impressed at all with the gun. Iโm a Benelli guy and have many in my safe but they will be semi autos no pumps or overunders from Benelli
Itโs painfully obvious heโs not used to Benelli Magnum Pumps, and is more used to Winchester Semiautoโs for trick shooting, not hunting.
the Carlsons portated choke tubes work great in the nova takes a lot of felt recoil away
I've owned both my personal opinion nova over super nova. Super nova would cut into my hand when shooting had to file around trigger guard and couldn't hit the same with it either. But I did buy it used and could of been shimed didn't come with all chokes and shimes so I got rid of it.
I know itโs not a new shotgun and donโt make them no more but one of the best pump Guns ever built Winchester mod 12 would make a great review
Good video. I have the supernova agree with your impressions.
I owned the Nova brand new after using my mossberg 500. Over the 2 years I had it, it killed a few turkeys and a goose or two but was absolute trash. Couldn't hit anything, the patterns were junk and when it got sub-0 the feed ramp would freeze and drop shells out of the bottom instead of loading. Own an SBE3 now and never looking back!
How was that 500 though? Iโm looking into getting my first shotgun and my local store has a good deal on a 590.
@@ryanwilson5936 Loved the mossberg, honestly way better than the nova. The nova has a very odd grip.
@@Drblood6721
Thanks for the reply man. I appreciate it! A lot of stuff has been making me lean more towards the classic Mossberg.
You were holding back. You should have said what you were thinking. I have the Benelli Nova and bought it because of the Benelli name. I will never purchase another Benelli product. It hits you like a ton of bricks, doesn't point well and is very hard to get on the target with any degree of accuracy. I even put the recoil reducer and a limb saver pad on it. With duck loads it is painful to shoot, runs stiff and I can't hit anything consistently. Wish I could sell it and get a sx4.
I have the nova and itโll spot 2 3/4, 3, and 3 1/2 simotaniously in any order.
Depends on what you want from a shotgun the Nova and supernova as far as recoil you can get a Recoil Reducer kit to installing a buttstock as far as the recoil pad I think you can get a better one for the Nova bernelli parts are very expensive but overall the gun is very dependable I have one for turkey hunting it patterns great
Cool video Steve.
I like mine but the fore end is loose and noisy in the woods. It doesnโt like 3.5โ shells either. Oh, it kicks like a mule compared to many other shot guns.
I got a super nova first firearm I ever bought. Wish I got a different one due to the Benelli click. Had it fixed under warranty and all they did was cut the firing pin spring. It now has the same problem and has to be sent back again.
isn't the benelli click a problem with semi autos not going into battery though? how did that happen with a pump?
Love the videos could you do a review on the stoeger p3500 or p3000
As a owner of both, I can tell you the only difference is in the trigger assembly. The Super has an open mouth design to allow hunting with gloves on. As a novice gunsmith, that has rebuilt many shotguns (ie Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, and Benelli), these two guns are nearly the same parts. The trigger, the safety and the housing are the only 3 pieces that are different in the trigger assembly. The Super allows adjustment of the stock with shims.
There is a longer stroke on the SuperNova, because it has to eject/feed a 3.5" shell (even though you shoot a 2. 3/4", the length of the stroke is the same). That's why you feel like you have to slow down when cycling the action...
It works better for shooters with bigger frame and longer arms...
I do hope you know the nova is 3.5 in gun too.
What type of shotgun do you recommend? I enjoy shooting the tactical variety. In terms of overall performance, do you like the 590 the Benelli nova or the Remington 870? Thank you please advise.
Works good for IPSC shooting
for waterfowl hunting, im not the biggest fan of my 12 gauge benelli nova in grass camo. The paint caused binding issues when you would pump the gun until it self cleared, and also it wants very little oil, especially in the cold. Its fairly decent now it is broken in, but when you go to reload with gloves on it loves to grab the tip of your gloves and rwestle with you in the heat of the moment it becomes a bit frustrating.
Thanks!
I have a SuperNova, and never have cared for it, for the same reasons you pointed out in this video; it's heavy, it's clunky, and the trigger sucks. I took off the 26" barrel and put on an 18" for home defense.
Great video
I would really like to see a video on Benelli M2 vs M3 vs M4
Do you know the button on the bottom of the slide will itself if chamber is open
button is pressed
It would be great if you could test the new Benelli Nova Speed! In my opinion this is a pump action shotgun on a whole new level if not the best pump action shotgun on the market at the moment.
I have a super nova and I have had problems with the shell extractors twisting
Supernova tactical all the way ๐ picking mine up on Black Friday. 11 day wait for me thanks to Thanksgiving lolโฆ
Have you had a chance to do any shooting with it yet?
I would like to report most hunting is done with hunter wherein a heavier coat witch makes the length of pull longer .
can you get the benelli nova speed. i like to see how you do with that pump shotgun.
I would love a stoeger p3500 review. I'm stuck between the supernova and p3500
Excelente video. A ver si haces la prueba a una beretta urika yo tiro con una urika๐
Did they start making the Nova in only 3โ? I own one that will shoot 3 1/2โ shells.
Supernova should have comfort tech whoops black is hard to see the chevron
How about a new shotgun show down again ? Interested to see how the affinity elite 3.5 compares to sb3.
I'd like to see you do a comparison of the Super Nova to a cheaper competitors shotgun. They seem overpriced and underwhelming.
Was definitely not a fan of either unfortunately, I really wanted to like it but it was very bulky and I hated the slide release, ended up with the Winchester sxp
Could you make a review on benelli m2, please?
I was going to go to Reeds for my first time on Tuesday, but the power was out in Walker so they were closed ๐ญ
Have you reviewed the Winchester SXP ?
Good gun goes bang every time ๐
Yeah guys they aren't pretty nor do they have the streamlined feel of a wingmaster or even a BPS. But mine has taken everything from squirrel and quail, to turkey and coyote, with everything in between. While not as sexy as some of others from past, some guns just tend to put meat on table and I'd bet my life on its reliability. Anyway thanks for the video and from one scatter gun nut to another be safe sir
I also forgot to mention my nova shoots foster slugs with the improved cylinder better than any shotgun I've owned over my 50+ years. And when I say shoots them I mean milk jugs at 125 yards at will, off hand. God's truth
Id love to see the girsan mc312 its supposed to be like a clone of a benelli m2
Have you ever reviewed the Remington 870 express
I want a super nova tactical
Can you do a review on the Stoeger P3000 or P3500. They are Turkish made pump shotguns under Benelli ownership. Their pump shotguns are somewhat similar to the Benelli Nova shotguns but are usually half the price or less. Perhaps you might like the Stoeger's over the Benelli's, or consider them equals but with the Stoeger a few hundred dollars less than the Benelli. I am most interested in what the trigger is like compared between the Benelli and Stoeger.
Benelli supernova vs remington 870 fieldmaster plz
Watching you shoot for speed means nothing to me when buying a hunting shotgun ๐
Can you review the Charles Daly 601
