Steve Gould - Sport
It's so strange to hear anything bad about this SXP. I've had mine for years and I'm probably into the quadruple digits through it with ZERO issues. This shotgun has been one of the best purchases I've made for the cost. Absolutely thrilled to have it and plan on passing it down to my son when he's old enough.
My buddy had one and hates it. He went and bought a Girsan mc 312 and he loves it. It was cheaper than his sxp and itโs a semi
I had two, one for my wife and one for me while we โlearnedโ waterfowl hunting. Both had ejection issues and horrible triggers. Theyโre gone.
I retained my 870 Wingmaster with 2 barrels as my backup, she has a franchi affinity 3 compact 12g and I do most of my work with an A400 Xtreme Plus.
I just bought one and love it. I also have many shotguns, from Target Skeet and Trap, to waterfowl grinders. Own a Mossberg 500, Rem 870 (garbage), CZ, and a Nova. I can't complain, shooting my first 4 rounds of skeet with it, and a 98. It's a pump, what can go wrong.
@@attananightshadow i want a 400 so bad i am scared as i would use it for geese to squirrel n hear it hates light loads n isn't even guaranteed under 1200 fps
@@jaacksun4674 your buddies not to bright
Just picked mine up this past week. I picked up the 12ga chambered at 3.5 inches in gray matte. I picked up some Federal clay/target shells on sale at 2.75 inches and am happy to say that this beast cycles these shells like a dream.
I got the black shadow version, and love it for trap, and ducks. Smooth action, minimal loading issues, shoots most loads with no issues. Thanks for the review!
Iโm getting the black shadow for Christmas I canโt wait had a couple tell me they are good shotguns
I was very excited about my SXP Trap when I brought it home. It had so many light strike issues it needed to go back to Winchester. To be fair it was an early run example but left a bad taste in my mouth for it. Replaced it with a Benielli Nova and haven't regretted it.
I just got a SXP Black Shadow with a 26" barrel.
Honestly, I couldn't be happier with it. It feels great. No complaints at all! It's going to be my go to Upland hunting shotgun for Dove and Quail. I can't wait for the Dove Opener in September. LET'S GO!
I love my sxp. But itโs my second one. Because the first one was crap and got sent back to Winchester. Fit and finish issues with the barrel.
6 months after it went back I got a replacement. No issues since.
To state alsoโฆI bought it also because of the recoil assist action. Thatโs kind of a tricky little thing to get used to because the recoil doesnโt always fully cycle the next shell. So it takes practice to help get a feel for it.
But it does help with felt recoil.
Have an SXP Field on layaway now. Looking forward to trying it out. Iโve heard some say the gun has weak hammers or that the stock to cheek ratio is lacking but other than that I havenโt heard much else. Iโve owned winchesters my entire life and never had an issue even when firing them at full speed. My 1300, and model 12 have never failed me and are clean crisp and accurate as all hell. I donโt know if the SXP will hold up but I trust it more than the mossberg or Remington. Both have had feeding issues for me. In the end I think it all comes down to what youโve used the most in life and for me itโs Winchester. Glad to see my $350 is well spent. Keep up the good work bud.
I have a Winchester SXP Turkey Hunter NWTF 12GA. I love that thing. For the forearm, I got woodland camo grip tape for skateboards and ran a 1" strip on either side of it with an additional 3" strip in the groove. It makes the cycle feel like my hand is glued to the forearm which makes pumping it even faster over the assist that the SXP already offers. I shoot and within a split second, the forearm is already slung back. All I have to do is think of pushing it forward. It almost feels like shooting an automatic it's so fast. After about a hundred rounds through it, I love that it shoots consistent. Winchester Long Beard XR will always shoot the same as will Remington Nitro. You can count on it going where you send it without worrying about overcompensating with any Kentucky windage. Very confidence inspiring.
Just participated in 100 singles today at a registered event with my new SXP Trap that I bought last week. I'm so happy how well the SXP fits me! A Falcon Strike is on my Christmas list! I scored an 89, 9 better than I did at the same range about 1 month ago with my old gun. This was my 4th registered event. Thanks for the video as I had watched this a few times before trading my old gun.
I have owned the SXP for many years.. mostly used for my turkey gun now and didnโt like it for duck hunting. The pump has a tendency to short throw for follow up shots. I liked the Mossberg 500 better on cycling. The pattern it throws is great and havenโt had any problems with firing. Recoil is about average.
I found an SXP marine, short barrel used for $200. It was never fired, so it was basically brand new.
So far it has zero issues of any kind.
Another nice review. As far as pumps, I am still a big 870 fan.
Still waiting for the 1012 review you have been promising.
I'm on my 3rd or 4th fiber optic sight on my SX4. The fiber tends to pop out of the holder after firing a few times especially w/ the shock of 3.5" shells. Which is one of the reasons I'm switching to 3"
i paid around 600 for the extreme defender close to when it came out and its so nice, a little bit more on the pricey side but the choke makes it worth in my opinion
Amazing๐ฅ, waiting for the semiauto shotguns review next!
I looked at a couple pumps recently and went with the Super Nova over the SXP. I did get a slightly shorter recoil pad and now it fits even better.
how tall are you?
@@2Boutdoors 5โ10โ
@@run-a-milekyle3835 dang iโm 6โ2, guess iโll have to go in store to find out which one fits me best.
The former 1200/1300 speed pump. I had a 1200 in 20ga youth model. I fired so fast my brother thought it was a semi.
SXP most bang for your buck shotgun on the market - incredible that these are under 400-500 (CAD dollars). Perfect for your all scenario hunting as well. Fun for targets as well.
Get a Girsan 312, theyโre on dor $400CDN at cabelas.
Sxp and 312 both made in turkey, might as well get a semi auto ;)
โ@@attananightshadow prefer a semi that works...
I just picked up the sxp long beard. It throws a great pattern straight out of the box
Owned 2 SXPs (one for me, one for wife).
I could never get used to the inertia ejecting so would always either not eject fully or not go into battery fully same with hers.
If you had your hand off the slide/fore grip and fired, both would open and fully eject a round. Both has 7+lb triggers. Mine was a 3.5โ sxp and hers was a compact field.
Weโve moved onto semi-autos, but I did keep an 870 Wingmaster 30โ barrel with a 21โ Wingmaster blued barrel for deer huntingโฆ it has a 4.25lb trigger. Most 870 express Iโve handled have around 5-6lb triggers. Either way, I find the 870 a better overall design.
Sav/Stvn 320 and Win SXP are clones (primarily bolt wise) of the Win 1200/1300.
Iโve got a 40 something year old 1200 defender I bought used almost 20 years ago. First gun I ever bought. I love it.
I bought a youth model 20 gauge. when you run it with any kind of authority the forend rubs the reciever on the bottom other than that its a decent gun!
Steve, I love your reviews. I'm going to buy a couple of SXP's for my twin boys. I've watched a bunch of your reviews on TFL, and love your message. The one review I'd like to see you do is of the finest pump made; the Ithaca Featherweight Model 37. It's also the most expensive pump out there, but you get what you pay for brother! I know you love the BPS, but give the Ithaca it's due.
I am new to shotguns and your intro is sick! Didn't know you could do that.
There's a lot more where that came from my friend! ๐ Stay Target ๐ฏFocused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
Bought a SXP last year for duck hunting. Shooting light target loads was ok with the pump assist, but once I started shouting the heavier duck loads, it would throw the pump back so hard I couldnโt hold on to it and would jam the gun. I did have two other people shoot the gun just to make sure it wasnโt me, and they had the same issue. Sent it back to Winchester and they kept it for 8 weeks before sending it back and saying โ it is working as designedโ. So now it is tucked away in the back of the safe taking up space.
Do you still have it and willing to sell?
Had an issue with both my SXPs. I appreciate Winchester's price point and the awesome cycling action, but I'm BPS now all the way for the quality and reliability. Both my SXPs suffered from soft hammers. Perhaps they were early models, I don't know. I had the camp/field combo and the field model. Both hammers peened after less than 1000 rounds each... they were still functional but it didn't inspire confidence for longevity. I also had issue with it extracting heavy recoil loads... clay loads were fine, but several times duck hunting I shot a three inch hevi shell and the gun didn't extract but the pump made it's way rearward. Front bead fell off on both of them. Anyway, I moved to BPS. Heavier, but the Miroku quality is awesome, the actions are butter, and they haven't had a hint of an issue. I also love that the action doesn't get water or fir or spruce needles in it when I'm rabbit and grouse hunting. Love love love the BPS, even more than my Maxus Ultimate. I would trade my Maxus Ultimate for a 12 gauge BPS Upland Special tomorrow. No hesitation. I have the 20, but not the 12. For home defense, I'd still go with a 8+1 Mossberg 500 or 590 though... safer bet for me than the SXP with buckshot, and the battery of arms of the BPS is, of course, not tactical and neither is the tube capacity. I choose the base 590A1 for that. Anyway, for a long term gun that you want to hand down, be ultra reliable and good quality, I think it's the BPS for field use. The SXP is probably fine as a truck gun or for youth shooters, boat gun, etc... but if you are going to use it, get something else.
Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. I have an older an d a new BPS that I plan to review in the near future. ๐ Stay Target ๐ฏFocused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
Oof, bps have fun cleaning it
Sympatico....have a 1980 bps and a 590 A1...had to send the mossberg back...good to go now.
Not a problem cleaning it.
I have one that has a loose fiber optic front sight and I've also have hevi shot loads get stuck when trying to eject them..I was wearing heavier gloves and water proof coat so could have been user error. I like it but I just got a franchi affinity 3.5 and it feels 1000x nice to point and swing. Longer stock and higher rib seem better. Obviously its a semi and it's almost 3x the price but it's awesome. Keeping my sxp for a backup and for turkey and what not. My affinity 3.5 will be a dedicated duck and goose gun. I liked my sxp more before I held the franchi. Unfair but true.
I shoot a bps as well. By far in my opinion the bps is the best duck gun on the market, if you donโt mind a pump. I think theyโre underrated and donโt get the recognition they deserve.
i got one of these guns and i use it for bear protection as i gold mine in alaska. great gun and i run brennon 3 inch ko rounds they work great
Based on the condition of your jeans, you working so hard you deserve a raise.
I'm not used to pump guns so when I shoot my friends SXP I fail to pull the pump all the way back so when I try to take my follow up shot there's still a spent shell in the chamber. Other than that I think it's a great gun.
When I got my SXP Upland Field the first thing I did was put a regular brass beed on it. Those fibers suck.
Have a question. Do the 3" and 3.5" SXP disassemble the same way? Cannot find a instruction video on the SXP 3.5 model disassembly, have trouble pulling out the bolt assemble from the firearm.
I'd love to watch you review a Browning BPS (12 gauge) ... I own one, my original Pump was a SXP, but I didn't get on with it. The BPS I however love, but really interested in your opinion and experience.
UK clay & game shooter...
The reason for the larger trigger guard is for shooting with thick winter duck hunting gloves. Any waterfowl gun worth a damn has an enlarged trigger guard.
Best value for the money maverick 88. Dependable by about all other CZcams reviewers and has great endurance.
I shot mine for the first time this weekend. It wont cycle everytime I try the ejection spring pushes the shell into the side of the barrel and it jams. I sure hope they have a fix for it!!!
Ok mainly skeet, some hunting , which do I get , the sxp or Super nova ? THNX
Just want to point out that gun is designed for waterfowl and typically cold conditions so length of pull should be short to accommodate winter clothing in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.
Love watching your videos. Thinking about the sxp or trap version or rem arms 870. Love you donโt edit out all the mess ups. Throw some clays on the ground and laugh it off. I like when people donโt take life too seriously
the best, love the reviews. pls do a 20 vs 20g interia vs gas system
Love the idea ๐ Stay Target ๐ฏFocused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
I;m thinking of buying one, what is the length of your barrel? I see I can get it in the 3.5 with a 26 inch or 28 inch barrel. I'm leaning toward the 26, even if I do use it for duck hunting later on. my main goal now is in the brush - rabbit hunting.
I have the SXP Hunter in 3 1/2 inch and also had the SXP Trap both fine weapons.
Have you shot 3-1/2" BB steel through the full choke?
I having problem with this gun, the 2nd live shell sometime falling off the ground when I ejecting the first empty shell. Do you know why this happen and how to fix it?
I bought the 3 1/2โ for my son. We dove and duck hunt. The โhalf ejection โ system when fired is still giving him fits. He refuses to upgrade to semiautomatic.
I acquired recently one in Mexico and the SXP never worked. The bolt didnt open after a couple of shots. Right know is in the Winchester local representative workshop for revision. Very disapointed.
Since the ridge is high and low to the end of the barrel, does it shoots high like the SBE?
What's the best way to increase the lop on these sxp models? I'm a tall fella can this be a good gun for me?
If I had to guess, trigger safety placement is probably a carry over from the Winchester Model 12.
Do the sxp shoot high or low left or right? And by how much? Thanks
Winchester should include at least two spacers in the box, but they don't.
Winchester does make spacers for it, but I had to buy mine from an outfit in Missouri.
I just added two Winchester 1/4 spacers to mine. It is definitely too short for most adults.
Can the barrel be changed on Defender 12 gauge SXP 18" newer version?
Have you get your hand on the Nova Speed yet? Would love to see a review of that ๐
Is it normal for the forearm to wear paint off barrel and receiver?
I would love to see you review the โemperor arms mx5โ I was blown away by its performance for the price.
My sxp is my ol faithful good shooting and reliable.
Best shotgun channel on CZcams hands down. I saw you picked up a CZ 1012 quite a while ago. On to pumps without this requested review? ๐ค๐๐คฃ
1012 review dropped today!
this gun has seriously been calling my name, ive been wanting another semi auto,, stoeger 3500 or weatherby element,,,, but this winchester tho. Damn lol
Steve, Iโm getting into the sport. I have a budget of $500 or less, which pump action 12 gauge would you recommend? Love the channel! New Sub!
Why is it his favorite? I thought he said he didn't like the trigger and the forend was too slippy and it was too short for him to comfortable shoot. Can anyone explain what his reason's were beyond the price point.
I got the sx4 last waterfowl season and I love it
Does it shoots high?
Actually the 13.75 LOP is about right for a field gun, especially when you have a hunting jacket or layers if clothing on. Not everyone shoots in a tee shirt. It gets cold in a duck blind here in the northeast and it gets cold late season while chasing pheasants in the plains as well. I have found that anything longer gets caught in your clothes and I'm 6'-1". Winchester got it right.
Owned a 1200 & a 1300. Great guns. The SXP? Bought two, shot three others and all five ate crap!!! Horrible workmanship! None could eject rapidly and Iโm not that damn fast!!!!
I been thinking about buying an old trench gun but I was looking into the trench version sxp and itโs just as good for the fraction of a collectible one
Need to see the Cz-1012 bud
I just got an sxp upland field. Feels good. Have t shot it yet bit I am very concerned about the trigger. I hope I like shooting it. If not Ill sell it and buy a bps. My 28 gauge bps is all quality. You pay a lot more for it but very nice
nice video ! you should do a pump shotgun comparison with every pump in the market..! it will be great !
Not a pump but I want to see your review/opinion of the Remington 1100. Itโs the old tried and true semi auto shotgun and would lie to see your review of it compared to newer technology in shotguns.
nice review
I can't get used to a safety unless it's behind the trigger guard. I've tried.
The SXP with the synthetic stocks have a different drop than the wood stock or something, I can never get a good mount on the synthetics
Can the trigger be fixed in your opinion?
I just bought a sx4 Winchester 3 inch 12 gage on Sunday. I am super excited to shoot it

Maybe get a Fore-Arm from the SXP Defender? Much sharper cuts.
The sxp is a far cry from the original winchester 1200, when winchester was more than just a brand name
Do a review on the completely ambi. Browning BPS.
Remington 870 and 11-87 have the safety in the same spot behind the trigger guard
Do a review on the newly revised BPS
He mentions that he purchased the SXP from Reeds. Does anyone know the reeds website?
Looking forward to seeing what you pick as the best sub $500 pump shotgun for 2022. Also I am curious, what is your favorite game to hunt? I enjoy dove because itโs a family event, and ducks for the adrenaline rush.
The stock is a little small as well and the recoil with waterfowl loads is a little much all though it could be because of my big shoulders it just doesn't sit right on the shoulder if the stock was more like the stock on a Mossberg I would feel perfect for me personally
So I e decided to use my dad's old Mossberg 835 for waterfowl hunting because it fits the same but has some plusses the Winchester sxp does not
I feel like the safety being in front of the trigger is more for trigger discipline. At least for me, I think it's more comfortable to keep my finger straight and resting on the front of the trigger guard when walking fields.
What barrel length and what the capacity
How much is one of those clay throwers
Will the exp eject all shells
What can you recomend? Benelli nova, supernova comfortech or sxp. I want it for duck, goose, fox, wildboar or just for shooting range ?
After owning both the supernova and the sxp field I personally preferred the sxp the supernova felt like a glorified air soft gun, very bulky and I hated the ergonomics

What do you think of the SXP?
SXP Black shadow was my first shotgun. 3in version. Loved that 12g. My best friend ended up with it later on. He still loves it. We just had her out a few weeks ago. The inertia assist is pretty cool also
Bought mine 4 months ago, ran 100 rnds of 3" double 00 brass buck shots through it and it ran perfectly ..๐๐พ
Steve, I think you have an ultra extended neck.
I'm 180cm or 5'11, and my SXP fits me quite well.
Maybe it's because I don't lean my head twoards the front.
Some Other Note from an SXP Owner Perspective:
A note I see another few SXP users mentioned in the comments.
The action does take a little getting used to.
It doesn't behave quite the same when you have light vs heavy load on it.
Light loads, the slide doesn't move as much; heavy loads, unless you are holding very tight, the slide will auto cycle to the back.
(Depending on how you grip your shotgun, of course.)
The fiber optic sight is just terrible. Mine blew out the first time I shot it.
You are correct about the long neck. Having a longer neck and skinny face forces me to get my head forward in order to get down far enough on the gun.
i got a brand new sxp black shadow for 350 i feel like that was a good deal
