    Stumbled on this while on a quest for that turkey choke in the SXP and yall are one of the only review that actually tested the choke and let me see the pattern I am eternally grateful.

    Your dad looks like a cool guy. I sighted my gun in this weekend a mossberg 935 auto about 2 shots is all i can take.I have shot 50 cal and everything in between them turkey guns kick on both ends

      Dads a cool guy and the reason I am obsessed with the outdoors. I know what you mean with the mossberg. Dad traded into a really nice mossberg shotgun and went to shoot it last year before season. I noticed the gun was light and it had a tight turkey choke in it. He shot it one time and looked at me and said nope! Lol. He couldn’t handle the kick. So hes got these heavier guns that help. When I shot mine in the video I should have had a better grip on it. I was gripping the shooting stick and it come up and got me. It give me a pretty good knot on my cheek bone. Lol....... Your exactly right when you said they hurt on both ends but you got to love it. Lol....

    Lol I thought dad was gonna fall over with that first shot. I shoot a Remington 870 with a Carlson .660 with the same rounds in 3 1/2 inch shells. Man they have a kick lol. Funny the older we get it’s nice to use a shooting stick. Great video keep up the good work. And be safe in the field my friend.

    • @pineylife
      @pineylife  Před 3 lety

      Them Winchester longbeard xr are wicked and they definitely pack a punch. This is the first year dads shot the 3 1/2 loads. He found out real quick they kick harder than those 2 3/4. Lol. The shooting stick makes it a lot easier to steady for sure. In This video when dad goes to shoot his new gun. The hi viz sight was missing. Since I replaced it his groups have been a lot better.

  • @bgdesignandsolutions
    @bgdesignandsolutions Před 2 lety +3

    I realize people are taught to aim at a turkeys head, but in reality, they should aim about 6 inches down at the mid neck area. This way the spread will go up and down the neck/head area, and not up and over the head area. That's why the shot was high. The SXP has a .743 barrel diameter, the 870 has .729. Try a.680-.685 choke on the SXP and see if the pattern improves.

    • @pineylife
      @pineylife  Před 2 lety +1

      You are correct. We aim for the waddles. To help with the spread. I will try that with dads gun. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching

      I have an invector plus barrel in my browning and i use a .660 jebs choke and I absolutely love it. I can go all the way down to .655 with the longbeard XR 3.5” #5 and it will throw a good pattern just a little tight for me. But if i was going to tell you to try different chokes i would tell you to try the jebs headhunters series.

  • @driftlesshunter9200
    @driftlesshunter9200 Před 2 lety +2

    If you have a good turkey choke, I don't see the need to shoot 3.5" loads out of a pump gun any more. With today's turkey loads (Longbeards XR or TSS), I would rather punish a Tom with a 3" load versus punishing myself. I miss Winchester Supreme Elite Xtended Range Turkey loads (favorite load by far), because they were like Hevi-13 loads on steroids. The Longbeards XR are just a cheaper copper plated lead substitute. They do pattern well, however. No one can argue that!

    • @pineylife
      @pineylife  Před 2 lety

      True very true on the 3.5 being over kill. I have some 3 inch XRS also but when I was a bass pro a few years back. I bought a 4 boxes of 3.5. So I got plenty to burn threw. lol. I used to always shoot triple beards but my gun just really patterns good with the xrs

    I have the same gun as your dad did you guys find a better choke? Been doing some research to see if which one to go with but still up in the air was looking at the Jebs head hunter but not sure. I would love to know what he decided to put in his gun. Thanks

    • @pineylife
      @pineylife  Před 4 měsíci

      Actually with everything we have tried he is back to the factory choke. The gun just patterns really good at longer ranges with the xr shells.

  • @arthurdirindinjr1792
    @arthurdirindinjr1792 Před 2 lety +1

    I don't wish nor is my intention to be overly critical but shooting at only small targets of only a turkeys head and neck are essentially a complete waist of time, shells, targets and the money spent on both.
    Bottom line is when patterning and even more importantly determining your guns POI and then adjusting you POA to meet its POI you absolutely must use a large enough target to capture your guns entire pattern. Shooting at turkey head targets 11× 14 or similar size are basically worthless
    The minimum sized target I've found that works to capture 95-100% of you entire pattern is 36"×36" cut from a 36" wide roll of construction paper. I usually cut 10-15 at a sitting but if testing mote than one gun I cut 20 if I test all three of my guns I cut 30
    Then draw a 2.5" circle dead in the middle and blacken it in and that is my target.
    I just can not believe that the majority of the turkey shell patterning videos I've watched on CZcams choose to pattern turkey shells incorrectly using dramatically to small of a target.
    The best and only way to sight in your turkey gun is to set your guns POA to the dead center of your pattern it is simply not possible to do this using a target at best doesn't even record 50% of your pattern.
    Like sighting in your rifles scope and put up a new target for each shot of your group your results are essentially useless

      No feelings hurt here. That's how we check our guns every year before turkey season. Might be a waste of time to some people but for dad and I Its time well spent and of course helps boost our confidence a little for the upcoming opener. Thanks for watching
