I have a 20 ga. that my Dad gifted me for my 13 birthday. I was so proud if that gun. That was my first gun 34 years ago! It has the Invector System. I’ve taken countless doves, pheasants, turkeys, qual, & even some ducks. It was my go to gun for almost 20 years. Old, new, cheap or expensive ammo, no problem. Extreme cold, wet, dry & dusty conditions. It’s never once broke down or failed to go boom or cycle. It’s completely ambidextrous & the magazine can be unloaded without cycling the action. All of my 4 kids have been introduced to shooting & hunting with it & now have their own. I have, “upgraded” to Bennelli, A5’s, & Citori. Until I got my Citori, I seemed to always go back to her & until recently after my Dad passed.
I might be getting a little Misty writing this… maybe I’ll take it out tomorrow & bag a couple roosters with it in honor of my Father.

My Dad got me a Browning BPS 12 gauge for my 16th birthday for pheasant hunting. My BPS has pheasants engraved on one side and Ducks engraved on the opposite side...I love that shotgun!..the length of pull is a bit too long for me and the front bead is pretty flat but I'd never sell that gun just because my father gifted it too me and it really means alot to me

Bought a 20ga 26” BPS Micro Midas around 2016 for my boys to learn to a shoot a shotgun on. It had a reduced lop stock. At the time Browning offered a “grow up plan” where they’d replace the stock with a standard one for half off. I’ve since had it switched out & browning did a great job with the stock swap. It’s a very nice shotgun. Blueing is perfect and at the time the price was great w a rebate and a sale from Reeds.

My dad has a bps in 10 gauge. According to him that was the fad in the 80s or 90s for turkey hunting which would out shoot the 12 gauges for range at the time. The 10 gauge was also finds a home goose hunting. My dad is in his 60s and still uses it for turkey hunting walking up and down mountains of WV. I want to get a 10 gauge auto after 22 plinkster using the new tss loads with it (dead turkey at 100 yards)

I bought the 10 gauge version I love it. I basically bought it for a backup to my browning gold 10 that was having issues. I don't feel like it has too much recoil but when you're in a turkey chair throwing nitro turkey loads you definitely feel those but it works great on geese and ducks

  • @colinmckim4515
    @colinmckim4515 Před rokem

My 20ga BPS was the first gun I bought. I still really enjoy shooting clays and hunting with it. It's a bit heavy to carry hunting but recoil is mild and you can tell it's quality. Mine has a Pachmyer recoil pad and engraved receiver, 26" bbl. My goose guide has the 10ga. He let me shoot it, it's a thumper and very heavy.

      @whitebuffalo4904 Před 4 měsíci

as someone looking at buying a brand new BPS, I fully agree that it looks cheaper, and you're 100% right it's an economics thing... I come from a guitar background, where (in electric guitars) they've rather brilliantly introduced the "relic" finish over the last 20+ years, wherein they "pre-wear" the guitar... I say it's brilliant, because they're literally charging more to do less work... no more high-lustre brilliant finishes; instead, fake beaten up dull crap... worst trend ever, can't wait for it to die! I mean, how can anyone deny that nice high-lustre bluing and a polished finish are in any way inferior?! What backwards universe are we in! It's one aspect of the new BPS I'll always detest...

My first shotgun was a specialized Browning BPS 20-gauge for ruffed grouse in thick Lake States aspen, spruce, fir forests. My backyard playground. Early 1980’s. Straight English stock. 22” barrel. Made in Japan. Smooth as silk. Shot fantastic with it. Still do. Relatively speaking as I’m an average shot at best. (Right-handed; left-eye dominant). Can carry it all day. Today I often early season pheasant hunt with it and can honestly say I shoot better with it (3” 1.25 ounce shells) than my Beretta O/U 686 Silver Pigeon II 12-gauge. I’ve got 2 good pointers that can pin down roosters quite well. Late season runners and finicky flushers I switch over to the Beretta.

Great video! I’ve watched it a handful of times. My 2005 28 inch 12 gauge field model looks very similar to the “older“ one in this video. That factory recoil pad definitely is not incredibly friendly.
I’ve taken it out and shot a dozen or so rounds of skeet and have had a blast. My best so far is 19 or 20 out of 25. I’ve been able to crack a good number of doubles with it too. Those always get cheers from the over under and semi auto folks 😊
I know someone mentioned that only the trap model lets you directly load one into the chamber.
The lifters on the field model tilt out of the way when the chamber is “almost all the way open” allowing even a 3” shell to be directly loaded.
I’ve been torturing myself over why I think I need another shotgun for sport shooting. This video and your top 2022 video both help remind me the shotgun I have is pretty great given my newness to the sport.

My first BPS had a 3 inch chamber with beautiful wood and it worked well. It looked so nice I hated to put it through the rigors of waterfowl hunting. I decided to get a synthetic stock BPS in 3.5 inch. Never used 3.5 inch shells but the heavier gun tamed recoil of 3 inch shells. I still have the gun after 30 years and it still brings down ducks and geese.

Only problem I’ve found with it is with the bottom feed/eject when it jams, which is rarely, it is a pain to clear. I’ve had to take the barrel off mid dove shoot before. Also it’s hard to tell if you have a round in the chamber mid dove shoot, I’ve done a lot of clicking with it in heat of moment. It’s a very nice gun and well built but for practical purposes I would have to say Benelli Nova Moss 500, or Rem 870 for a better price. I’ve got all the pump guns mentioned and just my 2cents.

I have a BPS 12 ga Field from the late 90s. It was $299 new at that time. And I do spend a lot of time wiping fingerprints off! But I do like the gloss look. It came with 3 Invector+ choke tubes. Gold trigger, silver bead
I bought it because I wanted a gun I could use either handed (I'm cross-eyed dominant). So I looked at the bottom ejects like the BPS and Ithaca. And it was much better quality than the other pumps. I do wish there were more aftermarket accessories available for this gun, though.
True about the recoil on the older ones - I end up with a bruised shoulder after a few hours shooting, if I don't use a pad.

I got my BPS back in the late-90s, it had an invector plus barrel. It's fine, expensive for a pump, I always liked my Winchester 1300 better. Cycles smoother and doesn't cause nasty jams on a short-stroke.

The 92 model is engraved, the others plain with the 08 being a Matt finish. Good review but these are hard model to get in the UK, so often others have never heard of the model from Browning. The Remington M17, Ithaca M37 & BPS are all based on the same design with small changes.
In my opinion the Ithaca M37 still surpasses all of em. Even the new Ithaca M37 Production by the owners in Ohio is very very tight and perfect.
It's my preferred shotgun to take hunting upland and hog/deer. Shoots every factory load and my handloads (Buckshot, Slugs, Roundballs, Buck n Ball and field loads.) wonderfully, smooth and with extremely great patterns out to 60 yards for buckshot, 100 for slugs/roundballs & 45 yards for field loads. Mine is a 20GA Featherlight from 1973/74.
Metal and Bluing are dtill in great condition but I did refinish the stock (1 coat of BLO a daywith scuffing for 16 days.) Because I just don't like that shiny spray on finishes for wood. After every 5th hunt depending on the weather I apply Renaissance wax to the wood and of course after every hunt wipe the metal down with Breakfree CLP soaked rag.
YOU NEED TO TEST THIS SHOTGUN PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

The original BPS came with a fixed choke, a ventilated recoil pad and a magazine cutoff which when used turned the gun into a single shot.

I had a BPS 10 gauge at one time. It weighed about 10 pounds, The recoil is manageable if you get the gun on your shoulder, but if you hit your bicep like I did once, it hurts lol. I've had several Brouning shotguns but the never seemed to fit me right

I love my BPSs. I just got a field in 20 gauge with a 28 inch barrel. Been using it for small game. It's a little stiff bot otherwise very nice. ** You should review the Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight. One of the new ones produced in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. They're excellent in my opinion. I bought two and they were kind enough to send me sequentially serial numbered guns. ^^

The BPS-10's are significantly heavier than the 12's, which helps with recoil management. I went a step further and fitted a kick-eez pad and a lead/epoxy weight into the stock, bringing the total weight up to 13.6 pounds. The recoil is insignificant through such a heavy gun.
Where it shines is with the bigger steel pellets - 1 3/4 ounces of BB, BBB or T through a super full choke is no laughing matter to the geese that are on the receiving end of it, sometimes 60 yards or more away. The BPS-10 is not cartridge fussy, will accept full-length roll turnover cartridges if you homeload your shells, and is built very sturdily. This season I've taken 5 Canada geese for 5 shots with mine, it's a great wildfowling tool.

I use the 10 gauge BPS with War Wolf Ordinance 0000 buckshot for deer hunting, because it reaches out a lot further and patterns tighter than any of my 12 gauges. If I hunted where slugs were legal I would use a 20 gauge, or a 243 if rifles were legal, unfortunately I don't.

I’ve got the old BPS with 12 choke tubes and a slug barrel. I cracked the original foregrip when I was sighting in slugs. The patterns have never impressed me; and it’s no joy to shoot 3 inch turkey loads from. That’s why I’m strongly considering a Beretta 400 Extreme.

The Browning BPS is one of my favorite shotguns if not my favorite. I found mine in the late 80’s for less than $500. It was a 12 gauge with a 32” barrel and top grade wood. I sold the gun for some stupid reason and regret to this day! I would go to turkey shoots and clean house! I know it’s luck where the bb’s land. Mine had the receiver engraved with a turkey on one side and pheasants on the other! I think, can’t remember it’s been so long. I’m a left hand shooter so the shell release on the bottom was awesome. I would buy one today if I could find it.

I has a BPS 12 3.5" I bought back in the late 90's, the tube is longer than the one you are showing here. I was told that when Browning first got into the 3.5 that it was a 12 gauge built on a 10 gauge frame (not sure though). Heavy as all get out though, never had any issues with it. I'm looking at getting a 20 bps for my daughter. One thing that you didn't mention is that this gun is ambidextrous (right or left handed)

I own three. I have one in 12 gauge with synthetic stocks with mat finish which is my waterfowl and bad weather gun. I also have the Hunter model in 16 gauge that I use on doves and crows. My third is the trap model which was a limited production run a few years back. It has a raised rib, a Monte Carlo stock, and some nice laser engraving. Paid less than $900 for it. I can hold my own with it next to guys shooting $10K Krieghoffs. Love all three of them. One thing to note, if you shoot this gun on the trap range let the range officer know that it loads from the bottom as I have been called down for loading more than one shell.

3.5 10ga actually doesn’t recoil as bad as you might think. I’d rather shoot a 10 then a 3.5 12. The weight of the bps 10 is 10.9lbs so it really tames the recoil. I love the 10ga i mainly duck and goose hunt and nothing kills em dead like a 10.

I like the classic deep shinny blue. Don't care bout finger prints as u can easily remove it
w ppr or cloth. Varnish stock protects the furniture better than the matte oil finish. But of course,
the latter is nice w waxing. Yes, i like the bigger trigger guard for the cold day gloved finger.
Is the rcvr still steel or alloy (BS hiding for cheap softer Aluminum)?
Oh, when u do the trigger pull weight, i suggest u try to get the hook 90 degree to the trigger curve
as possible bc. if it's angled, the weight would b more. Just a matter of vector force in x, y, z components
    in Physics.
Very informative video. Appreciated ur actual shooting the guns w measurements (timing).
Thx 4 ur great effort. I specially liked ur actual "field stripping".

I have one of these with the stainless receiver with pheasants engraved on one side and ducks on the other. It is about 16 years old and has been reliable for duck and pheasant hunting. My father bought them for myself and my 2 brothers each shotgun is just one serial number off from the next. Now days I just use it for duck hunting and moved to a Citori 725 for pheasant. Both of these shotguns will get handed down to grand children.
