  • Is This the Maverick Everyone Is Talking About? Maverick 88 Pump Shotgun Review: This Maverick 88 by Mossberg is a cheap shotgun. Probably the cheapest 12 gauge I have ever shot. Let's find out if Maverick and Top Gun belong in the same sentence - Let's go!

TFB TV did one of their โ€œBurn downโ€ tests on this shot gun. The test consists of shooting 500 rounds of mixed 12 gauge ammo (target loads, buckshot, high brass, slugs, 3โ€ etc.) all in one range session. They like to do this to cheap (just as good) shotguns, mostly out of Turkey. While most of the Turkish guns donโ€™t make it through the test without choking, the Maverick performed quite well. James was impressed with itโ€™s performance as I recall.

My maverick 88 12ga 28in was my first shotgun. Got it when I was 14 and used it for 4-h shooting sports, duck, goose, pheasant, dove, quail, turkey and rabbit hunting till I was 18 and got my fist semi auto. But I have over 10,000 rounds through it. No jams, no failure to feeds, no failure to ejects, ive never had anything break in it or had to replace anythingin it whatsoever. Overall I love this gun when I take someone who doesn't own a shotgun hunting I let them use it and it still gets the job done every time. All of the bluing is worn off inside the aluminum receiver but she's still working like a champ. It just goes to show no matter how cheap or expensive your gun is. If you take care of it, do regular takedowns and cleanings, you can make any gun no matter how expensive or cheap last a lifetime

The gun is basically a Mossberg 500 with a different trigger assembly and safety. In terms of build quality, it's nearly on par with a 500. I feel that your criticisms with the gun is mostly with the 500 design itself. All 500s/590s are foreword heavy. They all have a long length of pull and reach for the fore end. They all have the same interworking parts including the barrel, receiver, bolt, extractors, elevator, ect. Same design other than the trigger assembly, which is only different in terms of having a crossbolt safety. Some people like to point out that the fore end is pinned, but neglect to mention that some 500s come off the assembly with pinned fore ends as well.
It's basically a steal at the prices they are sold at. They are built well, and have great quality. I have had 3 over the years. These shotguns are well documented over many years as having outstanding reliability after hundreds to thousands of rounds put through them. The "many parts" in the assembly do not wear down significantly over time. Like I said, same exact parts as a 500 or 590.
Would 100% take the Maverick 88 over similarly priced Turkish and Chinese shotguns. The closest competitor to the 88 in terms of quality for price would be the Stevens 320, a Chinese made Winchester 1300 clone. Still even then, I believe the Maverick 88 has better build quality and a bigger reputation for reliability.

Lots of options for chokes and different furniture. Pretty much a cheaper version of the 500. Barrels are interchangeable with the 500. I believe the only thing that is not is the trigger group and thatโ€™s because of the cross bolt safety. I highly recommend it for a starter shotgun even more so than the Stevens 320 mostly because itโ€™s American made with a few parts from Mexico and the LOP

Solid shotgun, structurally you're not going to wear one out... Quite the opposite actually. Had a weird issue where the hammer would fall but there would be almost no indent on the primer, and that's with 2 field models. If you have this issue it is a trigger mechanism issue and you need to get with Mossberg. My security model hasn't had that issue, but man shooting it fast really put a hurting on my cheek, definitely recommend the Winchester SXP over the maverick 88 for a nice field model. Has a usable recoil pad, mounts nicer, slick action, smoother operating shotgun overall.

I have been shooting regularly for 50 years and presently use Mossberg 940. In all those years, in my small rural area of Missouri, it has a fine reputation with both shooters and LGS. The Maverick 88 was torture tested by James Reeves on TFB TV (a CZcams channel) and done extremely well. In fact Mossberg insisted that the Maverick 88 would hold up to whatever he subjected it to. The Maverick 88 torture tested was an off the shelf gun that wasn't sent by Mossberg.

I have racked up loads of dove and quail with it and it even won a competition trap shotgun match at my local gun club back then. Not bad for a $150 pump shotgun. (Hopefully some other owners with chime in, I know this gun has been around a while and people have far more rounds through theirs than me) I've only had it maybe 2 years, but I wouldn't say I "baby" it. Just shoot it, and shoot it and let other people shoot it. Mossberg has been making this shotgun since 1988 and it has been reviewed to death. If they were falling apart and having reliably issues, we'd all hear about it. In addition (aside from the trigger group itself and safety location, it has virtually the same receiver as the Mossberg 500 (this is from Mossberg) so you can expect the same reliability as the 500. I'd recommend this shotgun all day long. (I bought mine new, just before the massive price increase of firearms for $190) I've done a little bit of everything with mine, from deer hunting, to clays to more "tactical" drill style shooting. Probably has at least a thousand rounds of buckshot and slugs and tons of game loads through it by now. I have more expensive shotguns but the 88 sees the most use because I take it duck hunting a lot due to rain and swampy environments and the rest of the year it has the short barrel on it and stays under the bed for home defense, carrying in the truck, or in the woods for hogs. Saying Parts are Cheap is funny Considering its the same Stock on the 500 & 590 which are Double and Triple the price of this Maverick 88 which are their high end models LOL

Hi,thanks for another great video ! I have a question ; did you buy a stock Carlson choke or did u match with you specific barrels ?
Side question ; I also use the SX4, great gun, but why arent there any adjustment spacers as with the SX3 ?

Someone posted how they cut SX3 shims so they would work on the SX4. If Winchester eliminated the included shims to same money one would think they would offer to sell them after purchase but they offer none.

A lot of guys who buy shotguns like that are not getting into shotgun shooting they buy them as a farm gun or home defense gun they shoot them at the range occasionally or in their backyard on their farm they'll have it 30 years and put less than a couple thousand shells through it and they will never have a problem

Only thing I hate about my 88 is the weight. It kicks quite a bit due to being so light. Once I put a sissy pad on it made it a joy to shoot all day.

They all kick hard but lightness is a virtue. The only thing I don't really like shooting lots of rounds through is the M203

That pump grip looks like what is usually on a security model and seems like they sometimes throw whatever forend is closest at the time.

Is there a classic ribbed "cigar" type forearm available for the Maverick 88 youth 20 gauge? I much prefer that look visually even though I know it doesn't improve function.

Nothing wrong with these at all... They are a good gun for the money... I bought one in 20 gauge last Christmas for my 9 year old nephew... He shoots the Hell out of that damn thing... So far he probably run a 1000 rounds through it with no issues!... Great beginners gun for a kid to knock around!.. I think I paid $158.00 at WalMart right after Thanksgiving....

I have two friends who purchase an 88 every year. They use it from pheasants to ducks. It travels in a boat and truck. At the end of the year, it's done, and they plan on a new one for the next year.

I bought one for my 12 year old to shoot in 4H shotgun. He has 1300 rounds through it and it holds up great. It is similar to the mossberg 500 and parts are interchangeable with my 500. There where some burs that showed up after about 500 rounds. Filed them down, and there no issues since
