Rex & Daniel try a niche favorite that - supposedly - becomes more intriguing with water added. Thanks to Matthew Pilgrim for the bottle. Cheers ya MB!
Glen Garioch is a whisky that we're happy not many folks know about. It's reasonably priced and has a good deal of complexity. Thanks for spending some time on it.
Thank you so much for reviewing this. I lived in Oldmeldrum where Glen Garioch is based for the first 24 years of my life (i now live in Speyside whiskey country Aberlour). My Grandfather worked at Glen Garioch for over 30 years. An underrated malt and I am so glad that you have brought to the fore! 👍❤️ P.S while i was brought up with Glen Garioch and now live in Speyside my palette very much favours the Islay malts with Lagavulin being my ultimate go to dram! Much love from Scotland! ❤️❤️❤️
One of our favorites and an absolutely gorgeous distillery. We had a great tour here in 2018, you actually walk through their old kiln on the tour and their stills are stunning - with very long lyne arm on the wash still. If you head to Scotland, make sure you stop at this little gem that is off the main Whisky Trail outside of Aberdeen!!
A friend who was visiting from England brought me a bottle of Glen Garioch 1796 Founders Reserve a few years ago, and it was delightful. Not long after, I found Glen Garioch 12 at a store about 25 miles from my home (I live in a rather rural area) and, after trying it, I decided to keep both in my liquor cabinet. Though my preference leans heavily toward the Islay whiskys, a wee dram of either of the Glen Gariochs is always welcome. Good stuff for a fair price!
Been to the distillery last year in the summer, it's close to where my girlfriend lives. Because she was driving she couldn't do the tasting after the tour, so they gave her a little sample to try it at home. Also the people that work there are so nice!
Watched this review because i had this whiskey yesterday, and it reminded me also of longmorn 16(the new release) but a bit more balanced with the wood spice.
Love this bottle! Haven't had it in a while but it's the one I always recommend for bourbon lovers trying to get into or near to giving up on scotch. I agree on your takes. It has a definite earthy funk (delightful not off-putting), and has a real weight of character (I think you said heft). I think it goes great as a dessert whisky; every time I was reminded of apple strudel (proper Austrian strudel) with cinnamon, nutmeg etc. with raisins and covered in a vanilla rum sauce. The water adding was a bit disappointing, I found as well that the nose was slightly heightened, more interesting, but on the taste it lost character, and became bitey and hot, distressed. I will have to revisit this malt, definitely unique...Clynelish is my favourite Speyside actually. Cheers!
Is it only me that feels the mooooch is becaming more and more a somm? You guys should do an evolution compilation on the other channel! Hugs from Portugal
You absolutely have to try and find the Glen Garioch Vintage 1999. It's an age statement whiskey that is matured in Oloroso Sherry Casks. The nose is fantastic, and I get a lot of maple syrup, toffee, and spices on the palate. It's about $85 if you can find it, but it's worth every penny.
was just gifted a mini 10 yr bottle of Glen Gariouch (among other bottles) from a friend (a master craftsman) that is between 20 and 30+ years old. Friend is/was a friend to many of the old scotch masters and whenever he went to Scotland always was given some amazing and non public scotch. I am waiting to open it after I finish a special project.
Love love love this whisky! Rich, complex, not too sweet. I highly recommend you add water. I believe Ralfy gave it 90 points. Slainte MBs!👍👍#teamardbeg
I don't know if this is the same in the USA but here in Western Canada Glen Garioch 12 is actually one of the least expensively priced single malt scotch whiskeys and is almost half the price of an Ardbeg 10 now.
Very true, you don't want to get into your own supply, because you don't want to get caught off guard when the those revenuers make their way down the holler.
A year ago I picked up a bottle of their founders for under $30 at my local big box warehouse, not knowing anything about it. When I went back to buy a case the next day it was gone. One of my greatest missed purchase regrets to this day.
I believe I see an idea for a video, have the Whiskey Mooch in Training Briana do a blind tasting between Lagavulin and Laphroaig------I guess Rex can have some too.
I was confused, and had to Google it. You first described it as a Speyside, and later as a Highland. I found through the Google, that Speyside is a sub district of the Highlands. But I had to do the Google.
Tribe! Please tell me I was not the only one that just got Pavlov-ed. TWICE was the word “funk” said. TWICE was there no funk beat or lower third. TWICE did I look up from my work uncomfortable with what was missing.
Not Speyside, Highland. And until recently (like 2016ish) it was the most easterly. Now BrewDog have opened a distillery not far north east of Glen Garioch's distillery. Maybe sample BrewDog's first whisky, Uncle Duke's?
Guys, we bust on the Scottish pronunciation of Glen Garioch for not using all the phenetics. When there is the issue with dropping the pronunciation of veg•e•ta•BLE.
Oh my God it is "weird' whisky. It does not fit into any of my categories. Great experience. Great opportunity. I am so grateful to my brother Mark who brought it to Poland from Italy.
You guys should try pronouncing New England place names. There's a hill and a pond down the street from me called Bauneg Beg. For the record, it's pronounced "Bonnie Bay".
Nice. Would like to try both the peated and unpeated whiskies. The name (as far as I can tell) is pronounced "glen gear-ee" which nearly rhymes with cheery. Apparently it is the Doric Scottish dialect.
@@GAS180. I checked with the Glen Garioch website before I wrote my initial response. I can see no difference in the way I would pronounce other than the way I wrote it...and coincidentally, is the same way I would pronounce the way you wrote it. Perhaps you should stay a bit further from the distillery.
As Ralfy says, minutes in the glass for years on the bottle. You should have waited 12 minutes after adding the water to re nose and re taste. We would have enjoyed 12 minutes of dead space while you waited. :-)
Since I only drink twice a week, to save wear and tear on my liver, I've been looking for a non alcoholic scotch to drink in between those two days. I saw your review of Arkay, as well as other reviews of other non alcoholic whiskey. The reviewers give tasting notes like really crappie apple juice, and watered down cream soda. Without alcohol, is that what you are buying for $25 to $50 a bottle? Is there any whiskey tastes that you could sale as a soft drink, or are we all just drinking really crappie apple juice with a lot of alcohol?
Would be cool to see a “top 10 speysides for people bored with speysides” episode
One of my favourite distilleries. This is the best 12 year old single malt out there for me.
“Welcome to the whiskey vault” music to my ears
Glen Garioch is a whisky that we're happy not many folks know about. It's reasonably priced and has a good deal of complexity. Thanks for spending some time on it.
I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for it in the future.
This whisky has the most dramatic change when adding water than most I’ve tried, incredible stuff!

Thanks for reviewing this great whisky. I find it’s a great value.
This was one a random grab at the store and I love it. It really tastes likes honeyed pears.

Good stuff for a fair price!
Been at the destillery 3 years ago, friendly people and one of my favorite brands since then!
I love Glen Garioch. By far my favorite whisky.
Putting this on my "to get" list. I have the virgin oak, and I have to say, it is outstanding.
Been to the distillery last year in the summer, it's close to where my girlfriend lives. Because she was driving she couldn't do the tasting after the tour, so they gave her a little sample to try it at home. Also the people that work there are so nice!
This is one of my favourites though I've never tried it with water! I always thought it was excellent neat. Will give it a go later.
Glen Garioch is good stuff. Cuts through the mix. Good to have after other whiskies.
thank you for reviewing something I can actually find!
A great malt and they have some other great examples
The Distillery is in a town called Oldmeldrum, which is 18.1 miles from Aberdeen in a North Westerly direction.
Watched this review because i had this whiskey yesterday, and it reminded me also of longmorn 16(the new release) but a bit more balanced with the wood spice.
Love it! Even as an Aberdonian I had no idea about them until I got into distillery tours. 😬
One of my favorites. The nose is very unique

About two years ago a local wine shop to me had an independent single barrel of this, at just nine years and at 63% abv, it was an absolute monster
Before I get into it I opened this recently and it was pure apple pie! Cinnamon, pie, stewed apples, the works!
Is it only me that feels the mooooch is becaming more and more a somm? You guys should do an evolution compilation on the other channel! Hugs from Portugal
I think the mooch is a over level 9000 somm. Abraços! Força Portugal!
Constantly amazed at how much just a little water can change whiskey
I have this one!!! Yes!

It's a nice distillery (I visited it a few years ago), well worth a visit.
Interestingly, I find "Glen-geerie" 12 and Founder's Reserve relatively unloved by many. I personally like them a lot.
This is my go to unpeated. It can be had for like 40 bucks, and is dramatic and interesting.
Love this stuff !! If you have not had it give it go !
"Don't get high on your own supply" - Biggie Smalls.

Missed the FUNK but we got that CARESS. Dan keeps it interesting
Glen Geerie is the correct pronunciation.
First chance in weeks I've been able to join your signoff toast. I was sipping Larceny bourbon, not a Speyside scotch but that's my tipple this month.
Daniel/Rex, try the Glen Garioch, founders reserve .if you can find it
Does scotch start out with a very strong aroma kind of reminiscent of silage, before any aging is done?
Very true, you don't want to get into your own supply, because you don't want to get caught off guard when the those revenuers make their way down the holler.
Sigh, another one to add to my buylist.. thanks guys...
Glen Garioch 1958 even showed up on NICS L.A.
Highland!! Ex-most easterly distillery on the mainland of Scotland (before brewdog)
elliots1962 nae by much though
been a while since I jumped back into a video. Just curious if they explain when all got on the back wall
pls do Glen Garioch 15 cherry cask! What a stuff!

Just curious, what's the name of your " Big box store "?? I love this btl.-- want to pick up another ❤😂-- Cheers from ETn Smoky Mtns.
I believe I see an idea for a video, have the Whiskey Mooch in Training Briana do a blind tasting between Lagavulin and Laphroaig------I guess Rex can have some too.
This is my go to when I'm trying to convince a bourbon drinker to pickup scotch. Haven't had someone who didn't enjoy it yet.
She's right.
Glen Garioch one of those words in Scotland we put in just to fuck with people not from here. Oh its not a Speyside btw
Will you guys please review balcones rumble?
I was confused, and had to Google it. You first described it as a Speyside, and later as a Highland. I found through the Google, that Speyside is a sub district of the Highlands. But I had to do the Google.
Its not a Speyside. Its actually just a highland

Dang. And I used to think Emma was alright. Just another time that life has let me down.
Fancy Dan, the hobbit said funky at least twice!! Are you ok dude?!
This bottle gets even better with time. Loves oxidation.
11am viewing may be a new tradition.
Years and years my Bastard 😎🧔🏽🥃
I think somebody needs her own channel.
Y’all should do the IPA edition of Caskmates
Speaking of Gin, I just bought a Suntory brand Japanese Gin, haven't busted into it yet, have you guys had any yet?
Roku?

No "FUNK" - what gives?! :)
So many funks missed!
HOW have you not reviewed glen garioch?
👍🏻🥃
Nice. Would like to try both the peated and unpeated whiskies. The name (as far as I can tell) is pronounced "glen gear-ee" which nearly rhymes with cheery. Apparently it is the Doric Scottish dialect.
Steve Cabrera it’s pronounced Glen Geery. Stay 20 miles away from the distillery

Steve Cabrera wasn’t having a go. Was just writing an easier way. That’s all.
@@GAS180. Fair enough. Cheers to you! May your days be sunny and your glass always be filled with the best of whiskies.

It's the other way around. Enjoy your whisky allowance and drink good apple juice on other days.
SOMM-MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCH!
Laga 16 is no great shakes but neither is the 40-43% Laphroaig 10 (or the Select or the Three Wood). They're all kinda weak.
Lagavulin definitely > Laphroaig. And I love Laphroaig
No, Laphroaig is definitely better than Lagavulin!
There should be a blend with this and Glenrothes. (Dad joke)
Definitely would’ve pronounced it “Glen Gary-oshe”
You Know Everybody Too?
The secret of water in Glen Garioch is to use just a few [3-5] drops ... yes, drops ... of water.
The "ch" in Glen Garioch is probably a velar fricative, like "Gareeekkkkkkhhhhhhh"
