  • Understated. Under the radar. Misunderstood. There are many more "under" terms and titles that could be used when discussing Glen Garioch 12. Or indeed, any Glen Garioch offering. If this expression is anything to go by and/or any of the other things I've heard about this distillery's general reputation are true...then it appears to be a bit of a "Marmite" style of whisky. What do I mean by that? Well, if you aren't aware, Marmite is a yeast extract, savoury spread which comes with the advertising tag (their words not mine)...Love It or Hate It. Personally, I'm not a fan. Of Marmite that is. But what about Glen Garioch??
    Enjoy.

    Great review. Found this one about 10-12 years ago and we got along really well from the beginning. There's been quite a few bottles through the years, and I will continue to get back to this lovely dram whenever I can. At the moment I have a litre bottle, waiting to be opened. I think I paid around €45-50. 🍷cheers

    Drives me crazy for them to add color. The natural color tells you something about the whisky, but I will try it when I see it.

    Thanks for reviewing this one in your current series, Jim. I've not tried this one, but it sounds like an ideal daily sipper with a well-rounded and balanced experience. The fact that you say it is like a good old fashioned whisky is a good endorsement and encourages me to find a bottle of this. There is no higher tribute than Jim saying, "It's a goodun". I do like anCnoc and had a stunning bottle of their 24 that was a steal at the price at the time. Unfortunately, prices of the older stuff just keeps going up.

    100% correct Jim 👍
    Glen Garioch 12 does not get enough love and attention out there and long may it continue , as long as it flys a little under the radar , so will the price
    AC 18 also as you say brilliant stuff , but it say everything ya need to know about GC that AC costs twice as much .
    Top channel mate , always a great watch from someone who really knows his stuff 👍🥃

    Brilliant ..spot on review as usual , for those whiskies I’ve tried / own that you review IMO your usually bang on with you views ( cos they’re the same as mine ) for those you review I haven’t tried and I buy em , once again I’m always chuffed with your choices .
    The one thing I really really don’t understand is why your channel does not have 10 times more subscribers , honestly .. reviewing doesn’t get any better and any more honest
    Top job Jim 👍

    I’ve had two bottles of this. The first one was FANTASTIC. Drank more like a 14 year old than a 12. The second one was not quite as good. More burn and tannins, and didn’t really open up. But… this isn’t a crazy expensive bottle for a sherried whisky where I am so I might gamble again on it in the future. Just be aware that they suffer from batch variation.

    Agreed on everything that you said about Glen Garioch 12. It's often less than $60 CDN here in Alberta. I think I'll get another bottle. Best wishes to you.

    Hi Jim. Nice review. Just a comment about the color. It's not mentioned anywhere in the packaging, so we are right to assume that it's colored. But what I noticed between some bottles I've seen, is the clear inconsistency of the color of their contents. So what's the point for them of coloring non consistently? Or is it just a honest undisclosed non colored whisky... Happens... (deanston 12)

    Not readily available here in the US. I see a limited edition occasionally, haven't opened the bourbon matured CS I scored last year.
    Glad to see a 12 year old ranking with one of my favorite 18's. I am still working on the 2001 release 14 year old before I start hitting my 2021 bottle of the 18.
    I will say that a sherry/bourbon vatting is what a whisky should be. The old Arran 18 was a great example also.
    We can explore casks all day long but if you want it to taste like whisky a good balance is key. Intellectually, this makes the most sense. Unfortunately, whisky is far more visceral as the journey continues.

    I had a visit to the distillery last year and was given this and the Founders Reserve at the end. The founders reserve feels much younger and lighter, quite effervescent. But the 12 is the biz. The mouth feel is great and my mouth was coated for ages afterwards, in a good way.

    • @robfut9954
      @robfut9954 Před rokem +1

      For a non age statement the Founders is quite good. Problem is, the 12 is only $10 more where I am. So it’s a no brainer to buy the 12, even though I’ve noticed bottle variation sometimes.

    I do like the Glen Gariochs. The colour is just very, very unfortunate! I've heard insiders talking smack about the current owners shortly after they took over. Up to now I haven't seen those bad predictions come true.
    There's hope that the distillery will stay a good tip for something where beginners and geeks can meet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Strange how this one is indeed so often overlooked. Very decent allrounder imo. Perhaps that’s also it’s ‘flaw’, in that it’s good overall, without there being anything that jumps out? On the whole, I agree: a well integrated, decently priced and enjoyable sipping whisky. Definitely worth the extra compared to the Founder’s Reserve, though: imo overall quite young and simple, but in its own right still a decent value entry level. Surprised by the IYLTTTT , but I think I know where you’re coming from. Slainte

    Excellent review as always Jim (as befits your unique style). The GG has been another one of my many desired choices from early on my malt journey; surprised though that there were no observed ginger notes coming through on this one. The tasting notes and reviews I've read of this fine malt do seem to pick up on this flavour profile.
    I also agree with the Founders Reserve as being a good accessible, lower cost alternative which at 48% and non-chill filtered is a no-brainer for me. Mind.....like you, I don't support the E150a addition! Slainte.

    Excellent review, Jim. I had a GG 15 yo CS (oloroso casks) that was emptied last year, and it was a peach of a whisky. I would so much love to have another bottle of that expression, but... the price has unfortunately just sky rocketed since I bought the first one. So instead, I bought this GG 12 yo, I had read quite nice words about in a few blogs/reviews. I haven't opened it yet, though, but I very much look forward to that, and certainly no less now after your review 😎
    The IYLTTTT bottle... the price of that is close to the GG 15 CS. It is approx. 80% more expensive than the GG 12 (in Denmark). If the GG 12 is 50£ then that would be 90£ for the AnCnoc 18...
    That being said, I'd still love to have a bottle of AnCnoc 18 too, but the price level has put me off a bit. The 50 vs. 90 prices were just as an example for an easy comparison, you see... the real prices in Denmark for these two bottles are 59£ and 106£ respectively, the latter actually even more expensive on most webshops, where I can find it.

    Another great review video, Jim. Thank you! This one's bitter / sweet. On one hand I'm thrilled word is getting out about how awesome this dram is, and what knock out value it represents. On the other, I'm terrified word is getting out and we'll lose another hidden gem to the hoarders and speculators. It's one of the v few bottlings that it's actually the same price, if not a a couple of quid cheaper here in BC, Canada than it is in the UK. Even after tax (added bonus of being a 75 cl bottle here too). Simply love this stuff. Hope you get a chance to review the founders reserve as I've not tried that one yet. Thanks again Jim!

    Great video Jim. I have fallen in love with Geln Garioch 12.... that balance between ex-bourbon and sherry just does it for me. Im honestly not really a fan of sherry bombs and this just scratches such a unique itch for me. I have been looking high and low for whiskys with a similar profile. You suggested the ancnoc 18 - im tempted by your suggestion - does it have the same sort of balance between sherry and bourbon? Also - in hindsight is there anything else you have come across with a similar profile?

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Cheers buddy. Even anCnoc 18 can be a chance to take because each batch varies quite dramatically. I suppose, the likes of Glenallachie 12 would be considered a better balanced one of that ilk. Or perhaps some of the Ardnamurchans. Glen Garioch 12 is hard to match where balance is concerned though.

    You're darn tootin' this is to be kept quiet. Here, this is almost a 'discount' single malt, coming in at pennies over $50 US for a 750ml bottle, and their founder's reserve is ten dollars less expensive.
