Laphroaig Lore review

- Ah Laphroaig. From what I can tell...the whisky that offends people most. It's not Laphroaig's fault. Some folk don't like peated whisky, that much is understandable but....you've no idea how often I hear "I've tried that Laphroaig and it's disgusting!" Of course, what these people should say is..."I've tried Laphroaig and didn't like it. I don't like smoky whiskies!" but...in the words of the late Jim Morrison...people are strange.
I DO like Laphroaig. And the Lore tends to sit atop their core range. But..is it any good?

Single Malt: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using malted barley.
Single Grain: Whisk(e)y made by one distillery using one or a selection of grains (usually corn, wheat, rye, etc.). Also used to describe whiskies made in column stills.
Blended Malt: Whisk(e)y made by blending single malts from more than one distillery.
Blended Grain: Whisk(e)y made by blending single grains from more than one distillery.
Blended Scotch or Blend (any other country): Whisky made by blending single malt and single grain (whiskies) from one or more distilleries.
Chill Filtered: A process performed by some producers which sees the whisk(e)y chilled to around 0°to10°, before being screen filtered to remove oily residue left over from the maturation.
N.A.S. Non age stated whisky. No age on bottle.
U.S. Proof: Proof is 2 x ABV. Example…100 Proof = 50% ABV.
Imperial/British Proof: ABV is 4/7 of Proof. Example…100 Proof = 57.1% ABV.

Jim, I absolutely love your reviews and I agree Laphroaig is best when it is plain first fill bourbon matured. I must differ on the Lore however. Of all the bizarre Laphroaig iterations it been the Lore that stands out as the only non bourbon matured Laphroaig that I will buy again…..I do wish it was a bit cheaper though. Keep up the great work my friend!

Funny & interesting review (also about your work experience) and even if I can get your point I have to say I enjoy this expression quite a lot, even i it is tuned down a bit smoke wise (probably due to sherry casks & age), but for me it doesn't have the harshness of nowadays 10 yo reduced which I can't stand honestly & on that I'll switch that 10 yo with the Quarter Cask, which is for me indeed the best value of their core range & one of the best value Islay whiskies wise too...Slainte, my friend !
"Is it cus u is Irish?" Great review Jim, not really explored Laphroig other than the 10 which I have on the shelf for when I fancy chomping on a box of plasters. Don't think I'll be rushing out for this one yet, there's too many others ahead on the list
I liked to bottle of Lore i had a few years ago. Pretty good vfm and a nice one to tecommend to friends who like a reasonably peated dram.
Thanks for this one Jim. I like Lore, but when it crosses the Atlantic, its price goes bonkers. $200 - $225 CDN a bottle. I can import it from a UK vendor for less, even after shipping and CDN duty paid. Bizarrely, Quarter Cask can be had for $66 CDN at the local liquor store. Guess what Laphroaig I buy.

Yet here in the US I've got a local store that sells Lore for about C$150 and the lowest price anywhere for Quarter Cask is C$87. Your pricing is messed up.

Well that was like watching an albatross trying to get off a gravel laden runway with a 50lb rucksack on its back Jim!.....Lore has clearly challenged you a bit (in an amusing way), but I'm with you on the QC; that's the go to Laphroaig without topping that £40 barrier. I agree that Laphroaig is a unique whiskey, the 10 used to be good but I find it has went downhill, the quarter cask is much better but I am yet to have a Bottle of the Lore. Great review.

This is the problem with hyping up whiskies, expectations get high and most of the times unreasonable and the experience feels a let down. I absolutely love this whisky but there's a reason why it's not priced around 200, it's not the best whisky out there, it's relatively low abv and it doesn't boast an age statement. Not that it matters or it feels young but all I'm trying to say and I think all you felt as well is, Lore is a very good whisky for what it is, that's it and nothing more. Cheers Jim 🥃

I recently bought a bottle of Oloroso sherry ( as well as Amontillado sherry) to get the flavour reference. Quite a nice dry non sweet, slightly sour/savoury note.
My palate gets overwhelmed by some of the more peaty whiskies but I did find this to be one that I tolerated, and even liked a bit. Some of the Ardbegs, Lagas, etc. have had an "off note" at first taste, which then builds to an amplified off note mid-palate, and finally trails off to a long lingering off note on finish 😆. What can I say? I am a wimp when it comes to peat LOL. Cheers!

As much as I'd love to appreciate Laphroaig I fail to connect with their whisky. So far I've tasted the Quarter Cask, 10 yo 40% and 10 yo CS Batch 15 and my experience varied from "meh" to "this is unfit for human consumption". And I have no problem with peated whisky. Love Kilchoman, Port Charlotte, Ledaig, Ardbeg, peated Bunnahabhain and many others. I have a bottle of Lore in the stash waiting for me to gain some confidence to open it, but my expectations are not very high. Some practices of Beam Suntory like use of E150a, weak presentation of some bottlings and often cynical pricing don't help either...

Cheers buddy. Peated whisky tends to divide opinion a lot. And Laphroaig is one of the best at doing so.
Hi Jim, haven’t opened my Lore yet that I bought around two years ago (🤷♂️). Do agree with the QC though. Around half the price of the Lore? Always a Laphraiog QC on my shelf. Good review Jim 👍, slàinte 🥃

I like smoky whisky year round but tend toward ex-bourbon in the summer and sherry in the cold months.
Yep, had a couple of Lores and they have never quite hit the high notes. I think Laphroaig struggles to be at its best in Sherry and can say the same for a lot of peaters.
Have you tried the 10 Sherry Oak?
@@utoobia yeah it reminded me of a cough syrup called Covonia. Not had a full bottle but felt it was lacking that TCP essence of first aid kit that bourbon and quarter cask Laphroaig delivers.
@@greigmartin4339 LOL. I love the stuff, but I hear you. I get what you mean about cough syrup. My first couple drams were NOT good. Like the peat and sherry were at odds. Not integrated.
How does a drinker who likes Speyside whiskeys make a change to Islay/phenolic whiskeys? The tastes are so different.
Maybe start with lighted peated whiskies. Highland Park, Benromach. And Lagavulin 16 might be a good first Islay. It’s smoky, but not medicinal.
Lightly peated sherried expressions are probably the best bet. Benromach, Ledaig Rioja or Cu Bocan 15yo maybe? Older is probably better here, less potent smoke. If too strong add more unpeated sherried whisky to the mix.

Maybe Glendronach Peated or GlenAllachie Peated? I was in a similar place myself, but took the plunge and bought Port Charlotte 10 and did not regret it in the slightest.
