  • Episode 176. I think the challenging week I have had may have influenced the strong mark here. Still, I enjoy this Single Malt and it has the backbone at 48% to deliver a rich, full flavoured experience. It balances Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Sherry very well. For the price, it is a definite recommend in my book. Have you tried it? #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

    This really is a pretty damn good dram. When you add in the fact it’s an “integrity malt” (as the great sage Ralfy would say) it’s amazing value for the quality of the juice you’re getting. Great review!

    Both great drams Jon, and I'm really glad to see you reviewing the Glen Garioch as it's on the list for the current 12 year Scotch series I'm doing - the Deanston was the first in the series. Once again, our palates and thoughts are aligned. Cheers!

    Very helpful review. I had a bottle of the Glen Garioch over winter. Your description is spot on. It's got great balance between the bourbon and sherry elements. For me the fruitiness of Glen Garioch is really quite exotic, like mango, rather than Christmas cake, but that's just my personal take. It is coloured, I believe, but not chill filtered. I've a Deanston 12 on the go just now. I really love its straighforward bourbon appeal - no nonsense, but very classy. As you say, can't go wrong with either. I prefer the Glen G with a bit of water btw, but the Deanston straight.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  Před 4 lety

      Mango is a bit thicker for me than I was getting from this dram. Still, I appreciate the rich fruit notes. Glad you have tried and enjoy both. Cheers!

    Good review Jon. Glad it is available for such a good price where you are. Got one of these a while ago and for some reason just didn't connect with it. Nothing wrong with this in any way just me. Have a sample 4oz bottle put away that will come back to at some point. Doing that often gives a different perspective. Hope I do like it on the replay because it is a good value. Reminds me a bit of the new version of Longmorn 16. Cheers

      I find my palate journey almost as interesting as new bottles of whisky. Two years ago or so I had this Glen Garioch and liked it, but never thought to buy a bottle. This time around? I love it. So hopefully the 4 oz sample agrees with you in a couple of years!

  • @alliancewhiskeybeerstarwar7941

    Great comparison! It's fun to come off a stretch of bourbon enjoyment onto some scotch. The variety and the uniqueness of scotch is so refreshing. Though here in the states, the bourbon is so much more affordable so I tend to get lost in the value.

    With my limited experience of assessing Whisky critically I gave you a poor review of these two malts but I have to say that I shall try to always keep them in my bottle stash.

    Glen Garioch has really shown up on my radar lately. I like their heavy fruit notes almost bordering on pungent. It sets it a little apart and makes for interesting sipping 🙂 Both Glen Garioch and Deanston do everything right, but I have been let down by Deanston on occasion - maybe because I don't tend toward the bourbon maturations 😉

    I am a big fan of Glen Garioch. Some of the old vintage releases are still available in some provinces, 1995/2012 (last of the peated GG), 1999/2014 Sherry cask, 1998/2014 Wine Cask, the Renaissance 15/16/17 year. All are cask strength except the 1998 and all excellent. These were all available in Ontario just last year and some are still on the shelves in NS.

      Water for me almost always releases more smoke or oak, but it does not always balance other flavours. These were hardy malts and stood up well to water. That said, when I'm just pouring for me, no water is involved!

  • @francescoalbanese9215

    I was the one who said that it seemed your palate seemed to lean slightly towards ex bourbon casks... to be more specific perhaps whiskies with a good deal of 1st full bourbon cask maturation. I think a whisky with 70% 1st fill ex bourbon and about 30% oloroso sherry would be the perfect balance for your palate. It would have those nice toffees and caramels as well as a blast of light and dark fruit, with some spiciness particularly from the oloroso and a high bottling strength.

    Shhhh! That’s my go to Whisky you’re talking about :) Glen Garioch is a beam suntory product along with Laphroaig and Bowmore. I’m pretty sure both of those use colourant, so I suspect Glen Garioch also has it also. Sounds like I need to pickup a Deanston 12 soon, good summer scotch?

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  Před 4 lety

    Hey is there a more advanced scotch that you would recommend?

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  Před 4 lety

      Well that is a great question. The truth is I have not had very many truly complicated or advanced Scotch. I've had hundreds of different bottles not, but most are that $30 to $80 dollar range. For peated gems, I would consider Lagavulin 12 year old releases. For ex-sherry, I really enjoyed Glen Dronach single barrels, and for straight highland or speyside ... I'm not sure. I have had some really challenging Octave releases from Duncan Taylor. Recently I had a few Mortlach independent bottles and they were very layered. Hopefully I will have more experiences in advanced bottles, but I will say, I have had many gems in simple drams. Worth slowing down and appreciating. Cheers!
