    Here in Germany the prices are totally different. I just bought the Glen Garioch yesterday and I payed 39,90 euro. The Mortlach would cost me here about 55 up to 60 euro.

      I lived in Germany for three years and Scotch prices, in general, were lower. I loved it

    Great comparison Erik. I kind of had them in the same class but never thought to do a comparison, so i grabbed one of each & tasted along with you. Spot on with your descriptions mate !. I agree the Glen Garioch is more old school, its funkier, more industrial to me. The Mortlach is all apricot for sure. Both are lovely lovely whiskies. We have the Mortlach being more expensive (AUD$130-140) than the Glen Garioch (AUD$120) in Aus.

    Great comparison. Agree that the Mortlach is an overachiever, but the Glen Garioch's better presentation seems to set it apart (and I've even seen it around for less than $70).

    Personally much prefer the Mortlach. Thanks for another great comparison.

    Interesting comparison.The Glen Garioch 12 is declared coloured here in germany. Still i love the Glen Garioch 12 and it is cheaper than the Mortlach 12 here. The prices are pretty much flipped here. I can also recommend the Glen Garioch 15 Olorosso Cask matured with 53.7% ABV, which is one of the best full maturation sherried whisky for it's price.

    Prices are a weird thing. Reversed here in Alberta where the Glen Garioch is a similar price to Old Pulteney 12 or AnCnoc 12, while the Mortlach is reaching the price of some 15 year olds.
    I remember trying the GG about a year ago and was left with just a feeling of being a generic Scotch with no real personality. But I'll definitely have to revisit it, maybe after my Mortlach 12 is finished (and likely not going to be replaced due to regional pricing).

    Mortlach sounds like something they would drink in Lord of the Rings. 🙂

    Another great comparison, thank you Eric. Interesting with your pricing comparison. In the UK the Glen Garioch goes for around £54, and the Mortlach £68, so quite the opposite to the pricing in the US. (70cl bottles here of course)

    • @Dai240888
      @Dai240888 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Why are they so expensive in the UK? In germany you can get the Glen Garioch 12 well under 40€. And the mortlach if ordered from the netherlands for under 50€. Shouldn't the UK market be cheaper than here?

    • @HawkerPaul

      Not sure @@Dai240888 I just looked on master of malt. The Glen Garioch I can get for £48 on amazon, and the Mortlach £52, so a bit cheaper, but the Mortlach is consistently more expensive than the Glen Garioch here it seems. Its the other way around in the US it seems.

      Not sure@@Dai240888 I just looked on Master of Malt for those prices. Can get them slightly cheaper on Amazon, with the Glen Garioch being £48 and the Mortlach £52, but the mortlach is consistently more expensive compared to the glen garioch, which is opposite to what Eric says is the case in the US.

      not sure@@Dai240888 . Those prices I quoted were on Master of Malt. Slightly cheaper on Amazon here, with the Glan Garioch £48 and the Mortlach £52, but Morlach is consistently more expensive than the Glen Garioch which is opposite to what Eric says in the US. (unless he got the prices the wrong way around)

    good to see that the higher ABV and NCF results is a better whisky. Worth the extra $20!

    😊hola Erik,no probé el Glen Garioch,si el Mortlach y es un whisky que me gusta mucho,te diré que puede compararse más a un whisky japonés como el takestsuru o el Nikka tienen mucho en común como la suavidad del roble empujando el paladar.

    Smokiness of Glen Garioch could come from the level of charring of the casks

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  Před 5 měsíci +1

      That would be more like for an Ex-Bourbon cask as Ex-Sherry aren’t recharred.

    • @RobertSingleton-dw9yh
      @RobertSingleton-dw9yh Před 5 měsíci

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Didn’t know that Sherry casks aren’t charred/Re-Charred good to know. Garioch 12 is a mix of ex Bourbon and Sherry casks still could account for a hint of smoke
