This is an exceedingly sweet and overtly “smooth drinking” whiskey. It is saved by the grace that it’s finish lingers an extended amount of time, yielding enough of an event to feel fulfilled. I would almost describe it as if whiskey were mascaraing as an aged Jamaican rum. Not as complex, or challenging as I was hoping given Mortlach’s reputation. Nevertheless, for those who enjoy an easy sipping whiskey this will hit the mark, provided you have a sweet pallet.

Herr Luening's solo reviews are the best. Straightforward and comprehensive.

Umami flavor: "It is best described as a savory, meaty, or brothy flavor that can be found in many different foods," says food scientist Michael Murdy, founder of Robust Kitchen.

Thanks for the excellent review. It is nice to hear that the replacement for the [not] Rare and [unlikely] Old is an improvement.

I'm a huge fan of Mortach, but I've stayed away from standard bottlings due to the "prestige" pricing business model. I have no taste for that. I'm glad they are going a better route now. :)

I agree Brandon. Still a bit premium though.

This expression is available where I live in the US for less than $50. At that price it's a steal of a whisky, and I will buy another when my current bottle is finished.

Saw some surprisingly unenthusiasic reviews or perhaps they were of an earlier bottling because they seemed to be talking about different tastes. I came looking for more views. I still remember the wonderful Flora and Fauna. This is a different beast. 'Comparing apples and pears'. I have a glass here and I find it wonderfully well balanced and friendly, particularly in it's moreish ending, feminine even. Yes Mortlach took a wrong turn. I think this is back on track. Thankyou.

Umami is not flesh, Umami is a category of taste in food (besides sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), corresponding to the flavor of glutamates, especially monosodium glutamate.

The market shapes the whiskey. Seems like they learned that the hard way.

Is it normal to “swish” the whiskey in your mouth like that?

Only for pro tasters, it's like spitting wine in buckets but you wouldn't do it in a restaurant
