Rex & Daniel sample an Irish craft sub-brand of Jameson finished in a unique wood (as per Ireland's lax liquor laws). Big thanks to Terry Dolan for the bottle. Cheers ya MB!
New to the Whiskey Tribe. Was watching Old School Whiskey Vault videos last night and reached #62. Appreciated this exchange 9.5 minutes in: Daniel: And if you want to send us some whiskey-trying to take some mooch notes-If you want to send us some whiskey for the vault, it’s tax deductible. Rex: (chuckling) Right. Daniel: I’m just saying. Rex: I will be amazed if that ever happens- Daniel: Yeah, it’s never going to happen. Rex: -Whenever people see a freaking wall of whiskey. Daniel: Yeah, no ones going to send us whiskey. Yeah, that’s like a rich person sitting on the corner asking for money. Rex: While in their Armani suit. Little did they know.
As a student at the University of South Carolina (Go Cocks), I feel it necessary to share my knowledge of chicken nomenclature. A female chicken is a hen. A male chicken is a rooster also known as a cock. A young male chicken may be referred to as a cockerel. I hope this knowledge will dramatically improve your life.
Is Daniel trying to venture into the ASMR realm? A whisk(e)y tasting ASMR with the glen cairn mic'ed up? To hear every sip and sniff for your auditory whisk(e)y enjoyment! Followed up by masticatory cracker stimulation! Oh!!! Danny boy, you may have stumbled on to a gold mine and you didn't even know it! ;)
I got nose of fresh cut grass and red delicious apples. The nose is honey and apple and woody notes. Reminds me of walking through an apple orchard in the fall
Rex missing another mooch opportunity, "how does this compare to other craft irish distillers?" He should of replied I don't remember let's compare a few 😁. Thanks for the review and cherry wood idea 😉.
It was the coolest thing ever to see them give the reigns to a young buck with the sole purpose of pushing what whisky could be. The SWA loosening the laws will mean big things for this brand. I think some extra age on something like this could make it magical.
Hey Daniel, can you spin the bottle of Glynnevan by your right elbow around? Thanks, I'm from Guysborough, Nova Scotia, the small town where that Rye is bottled. Cheers.
I drank almost an entire bottle of Jameson Black Barrel last Saturday in about 2 hours. I threw up in my sleep in my buddies tinyhome and rolled in it. I am currently out of Black Barrel. Your videos make me happy btw.
Yes i know you aren't supposed to drink whiskey like that, and yes it was stupid and irresponsible. Black Barrel is a lovely drink though and i cannot resist.
Did you.. watch the video? They say it's the Midleton distillery. And, yes, there have been several unique bottlings. It may be hard to get depending on where you live, but if you live in Ireland or the UK it should be fairly easy.
Anyone want to give me a recommendation for an Irish whiskey I can find in the US (MN) thats both good and affordable? Im not a fan of jameson, but tullamore dew was ok. Most of the irish I find is over $40 though. Im not very experienced with irish, im a big bourbon fan but trying to expand horizons.
Prices vary wildly, I’ve seen high 30s to mid 70s depending on which store and finish you find but I have enjoyed tyrconnell quite a bit. That said I’m more on the redbreast side of thing when I can afford it than "tullamore don’t”
I just picked up redbreast 12 for $77 at my local liquor store in Washington. It's pretty dang good. I also like the Sexton. It might be closer to the $40 range (at my location) if I remember right.
Powers John’s Lane is a 12 year old pot still whiskey that for me is the best value Irish whiskey, or any variety of whiskey period. 46% so not cheating you on the ABV. Usually around 65 euro in Ireland, so not budget but not elite price either. Once you’re past the shoulder on the bottle it’s as interesting and enjoyable as whiskies 3 times the price. If you see it in the US for under 70 dollars I’d comfortably recommend picking it up. Having a few pot still whiskies adds to any collection, it’s arguably the pinnacle of whiskey styles, just a pity there are so few brands left (there were once hundreds before the collapse of the Irish whiskey industry), but its growing again.
That one was bought and shipped by J.J Fox cigars in Dublin. You get the tax refunded if you ship to the USA so the shipping for 2 bottles actually only worked out at €12
Random thought, at what point is a craft distillery no longer considered a craft distillery? Wouldn't Jack daniels have started out as a craft distillery? At what point did they say "We're big boys now!" Lol. Anyways..
The province of British Columbia actually has a legal definition for a craft distillery: up to 50,000L of spirit product per year, fermentation and distillation must be performed in-house, only provincial agricultural products can be used, and neutral grain spirits cannot be used; qualifying distilleries gain huge tax breaks. Between 50,000L and 100,000L the business enters the "transitional craft distillery" category which reduces the tax break but does not eliminate it. Above 100,000L means they are a commercial distillery and the craft distillery restrictions fall off, but the product is taxed and marked up in full. According to the Craft Distiller's Guild of BC, this definition of craft distilleries by the province is the highest level of government to define a craft distillery in North America, and "likely even the world."
@@elixwhitetail This is why this community is so good. Someone always comes through! Thanks for the reply! Good info, I figured it would have to do with amounts being produced.
@@coreyspagnola5767 Cheers! This only applies to the province of British Columbia in Canada, of course, but it's a start! Also, to be specific the 50,000L threshhold is based on total product (meaning the liquid going out in bottles), NOT pure alcohol volume. This means that craft distillers are actually incentivized to release cask strength/high-proof spirits at higher prices as opposed to bulk producing 40%-floor bottlings.
I'm not sure exactly what story this is, but I think the first mention of Whistlepig might be episode 86, WhistlePig Farmstock Rye and Rex and Daniel talk about how they say they didn't source the rye, they "rescued" it from being blended into a massive mix of Canadian whisky.
@@elixwhitetail we tried those and they didn't have it. Im slowly going through it. Just finished episode 75. Slacked off a bit but I'll be watching more every day.

I'd recommend some Talisker 10, Highland park 12, or Oban 14 if you want to splurge a bit. Each are great and will really get you some nice exposure to single malts that are similar to jwb and jwdb.
You guys know that Midleton makes the Powers line, right? You can't seem to include it in any Midleton brand enumeration and it is arguably the most emblematic of Irish Single Pot Still whiskey. C'mon, man!
Am I the one person that is sitting here just begging an Irish or Scotch distillery to make a Rye. American Rye is aggressively aged, like Bourbon. Even just up north in Canada rye gets different. I need a scotch rye. I think it would be great. 70~% rye and like 20-30% peated malted barley. Ages slowly like scotch? I think there is something there.
Kilbeggan do a kinda Rye (it’s 30% rye), I have it and find it interesting. Has the thick mouthfeel of an Irish whiskey with a nose and initial flavor of the “rock candy” you get in European seaside towns - like an old fashioned lollipop candy, you can find on sale at Disneyland in the US and places like that. But the finish was this weird drying coffee bean moment that I’ve never tasted anywhere else. I wouldn’t say it was an amazing whiskey, but definitely worth a purchase for the left field nature of it, and find myself grabbing a drop of it at least once when I’m drinking a few different whiskies on a Saturday night! €50 in Ireland. So probably around 50 dollars in the US.
3/30/18 you keep bringing up pasteurization with breweries, Daniel does this all the time. What craft brewery does this? AB/INBEV and those other huge ones might because they make beer that will sit on the shelf for years and not change, but a small, craft brewery doesn't do that. It would destroy the hops in the can. As a brewer it's killing me. Okay go back to drinking.
You never mentioned what type of whiskey it is, which is pretty unbelievable but to make matters worse you didn't even mention it in the title of the video either. Considering that Method and Madness do pot still, grain and single malt to not let the watcher know that this particular release is a pot still is completely ridiculous. Also, you should have compared it to one of the other Method and Madness pot still's such as the French Chestnut. (slow clap)

I liked the bit where they drank the whisky and then reviewed the whisky.
I absolutely LOVE the Method and Madness Wild Cherry cask edition! Ordered a bottle from Ireland, wish I’d ordered two.
I really need to get my hands on some Green Spot.
It's good stuff for the money. That, and Powers John Lane 12 if you can find it.
I you ever see Red Spot for close to €100 grab it. Apparently they aren't making it anymore and it's meant to be super good.
All the Spot whiskey is outstanding
Leoville Barton Green Spot is wonderful
We have plenty of Green spot(65-70) and Yellow and most of the redbreast in Columbia, SC.
Top of the whisky to ya!
Just got the French chestnut delivered and OMG! Soooo good!
I have had the French Chestnut Finish and it was one of my favorite wiskeys of all time. Would like to try some other versions.
Virgin Spanish Oak is fantastic
i have the French chestnut and the single grain in the spanish Oak both favorites for very different reasons
What is the French Chestnut like. I like the sweetness of the Spanish oak.
I love the Wild Cherry wood finish. But I like sweeter whiskey with woody notes. Everything from Method and Madness is darn good!
When I used to eat wheat and cheese, I loved water crackers with super old salty cheese on them. So yummy!!!

The Acacia barrel is also fantastic. 92 euro in Ireland but it's one of the best single pot still whiskeys Ive had
I've been waiting for this to hit our shores
and I love a thick cork. not sure why...
I’ve seen the Single Malt and Single Pot Still in the US but not these special wood finish versions
The chestnut finish version is divine/to die for/heavenly/all of the above. Highly recommended.
First...I always wanted to do that, not really, but I did it anyway!🤣
Very woody 👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻✌️✌️

Whiskey of the sea? Chicken of whiskey? Definitely got to go with the eyepatch I'm sure the bottle art will be amazing

It's hard to find. I would have a hard time walking past any of it.
Edward Powers ya, this was a special Spirit Release and I had already spent my budget.
They have it in PA now. I got a bottle of their single pot still there and ordered the Wild Cherry wood finish from Ireland
Good morning MB's..

You both need to locate Middleton Very Rare 2016 release. The juice of that vintage made me go, woh I didn't know whiskey could do that

Did you not watch the video?
