- Daniel is excited to sample an Islay blend at a very affordable price. Rex tries to convince Daniel to carry on the Skullet tradition and delves into the ancient secret methods of ingesting whiskey.
DRY WEEK is August 7th through the 14th. Prepare yourselves emotionally.
Thanks to Kurt Stroeters for the bottle. Cheers you MB!
Lol. Luv the intro for dry week. It rocks
"I don't know why Laphroaig is so affordable, but it is." Which is why (yet another reason on the long list) it should be on the Shelf of Quintessence. Keep up the shenanigans, EMMA!!
Eventually they will give up right?
The cask strength is not very affordable in most markets. It is 3 times the normal Laphroaig 10 and almost twice as much as Lagavulin 16 here in Australia.
That makes sense though. That's not something you would generally find a pour off unless you go to a specialty shop.
I'm not addicted to watching Whiskey Vault reviews. I can quit anytime I want to.
Rex.... the butt chugging was supposed to be OUR secret.... okay, now I'm a Certified Wine Sommelier, Whiskey Sommelier and Butt Chugger Extraordinaire. 🥃
Best intro ever. Are you drunk on a Tuesday and not in college?!? Sweet mother of God, that is hilarious. I am reminded of under grad. I went to Arizona State in the 80s. There was a diner off campus that had something called the Sun Devil special. It was 2 egg, toast, and hashbrowns and a pitcher of beer for $1.99. It was only served from 6am to 8am. In 2 years, I don't think I missed many days.
Finally the boys have had Smokey Joe! It's been my go to blend for peat!!
I can't stop watching Daniel's right shoulder.
"Are you drunk on a Tuesday and not in college?"
Who told you that?!
I started my experiments into the whiskey experience just a little bit before the last Quarterly Dry Week when I discovered you amazing lads back in early lockdown. I really gotta say, endorsing the QDW is a incredibly decent and respectable thing to do that really raises the importance of just taking a step back an impose a bit of self care. Good on you lads, and thanks for all the quality whisk(e)y recommendations!
You've gotta love the Scots for barbecuing their whiskey.
Hahaha
Gimme. Dat. Smoke.
every time I hear Daniel say "Oh yeah" I see the Kool-aid man in my head lol.
A man of culture
@Werewolf O. London, Esq. I do and Randy Savage is narrating
You should review koolaid and juices for dry week. And do it with the same level of seriousness as whisky.
Yes.
And also yes.
I need the Dry Week Ad loaded on this page as it's own video. That was beautiful.
That dry week promo is lit, well done!
Loving the intro Dan!
Always nice to find those relatively affordable bottles that are actually nice and enjoyable.
Cheers 🥃
- Patrick
Glad you guys did the dry week infomercial. Hilarious, and now I get to know about/partake in it, even though I haven't joined any of the tribe spaces yet. :P
Somehow, I always end up timing my dry weeks exactly a week before you guys. Every. Fricken. Time. Mine ends tomorrow.
The intro was A+
OMG That Intro!
I don’t even drink I just like watching y’all.
A Ralfy mention 👍 the 3 of you reviewing a islay in the Bofhy would be banging
Smokey Joe is sold exclusively at Total Wine I believe. Knew you guys would like it. It's been my budget Islay for a couple of years. Thanks for the review.
Fantastic Intro! OOOHHH YEAH!!!!
Big Peat by Douglas Laing is one of my faves, definitely have to try this as well
Coming in to dry week it's a pleasure to recommend the Finlaggan Port Finish as a budget(ty) Islay.
I ended up having a friend pick this up at Total Wine in Phoenix and bringing it to me in SLC. This is really peaty and tasty. Would def recommend
would love to see you guys try Laphroig QA. Nice vanilla notes to go with peat smoke
LoLz at the Dry Week intro . Cheers. Some one get Fancy Dan a Whisky.
First off I love Emma!!🤣
Second- who wants to see Daniel rock a skullet 🖐
Great opener!!!
I love this bottle my favorite so far, thank you magnificent bastards for this gem.
"Take Control" is the best way to put it. Dry Week Baby!
That intro is in between "Hell yeah BROTHER!!!" and "OOOOH YEAH!!!"
Smokey Joe. I met a guy in Jamaica named that. He wasn't selling whiskey.
Oh yeah, sweet cocaine 😆
Appalachian Exploration yeah I was being sarcastic. I understand Jamaica is renowned for the herb and smokey joe was probably smoking something 👍🏾🔥💨💨
I keep the JW double black as my house peated blend. I love it
OMG I'm glad you guys reviewed this whisky! It is seriously among my top 3 islay whiskys. It is truly an amazing dram for the money. I'd still take ardbeg, Laphroaig any day but for the money this cant be beat. I get mine at total wine and the store here by me has it for $25.99 which is why I have 4 bottles on my shelf..LOL
Where do you live that smokey Joe only costs 25$?
@@Quacklebush I live in Albuquerque, NM and total wine by me has it still for $25.99
@@leonardsandoval8320 There are 2 total wines in Albuquerque, NM. Both of them sell it for 36.99. I figured you were full of it.
Great whisky especially if you try it after 1/4 of the bottle is gone and it’s been 2 weeks after you open the bottle. It’s amazing for the money
Something to keep my eye out for, but I'm pretty happy with my beg-phroaig-vulin collection 😋
We may not see Emma as much anymore, but we can still feel her presence with her ongoing Laphroaig battle with Rex/Daniel on the quintessential Islay shelf.
Lol the way Rex always makes that face when he says Bastard , it's great
Just tried Smokey Joe. Delish!
Best intro ever
I did dry week early now I have to suffer while watching these amazing reviews.......
Y'all should go back and do a review of the San Diego Distillery Whiskeys, especially the peated!
I was at Total Wine July 20, 2020 near Seattle and had a bottle of Smokey Joe's in hand. It was $45 here. But put it back, because I found a budget blend called Langs full and smoky peaty warmth for $25. Langs wasn't bad either, but did prefer the bottle of Teachers I had picked up also for $23.
Me and my Coworkers do a blind tasting where we each submit a bottle. That was the first time I had smokey Joe and I was very happy to see the price.
Yes on total wine I live in Greenville S.C. they have it there 😃 and I like it !!!!
Laphroaig 10 is typically around 39 bucks around here
Oh my God that dry week shit is amazing.
Gonna try my first dry week
Gonna be hard to keep your fist dry bro
David S Lmao *corrected it*
Bought it at total wine. Totally love it.
I'm interested in this. I hope it's available in Virginia!!!!
Would love to see a comparison of this whisky vs Johnny walker double black.
This from an Ardbeg fan. Smokey Joe is the real deal. For half the price of high end smoke scotch this is a must. This does not have the finish of an Ardbeg BUT the flavor up front is excellent. Then again Ardbeg is known for marathon longevity. Should smoke lovers purchase Smokey Joe.....Hell yes.
Will the lighting on display cases, for example the vaults quintessential wall, effect the whisk(e)y in the bottles?
Is there an episode where they go through all the quintessential whiskies in the back?
I don't think they've actually picked them yet...mostly just placeholders now.
I am all for it thought.
I've got a bottle of that. I have hoped you would do this one.
For the love that is all holy!!! We want Ardbeg 5 Wee Beastie!! And kindly put it up against Laphroaig Select.
I wonder how this compares to the Peat Monster from Compass Box. It’s one of my favorite. It is also slightly more money.
Cheers!
Gentlemen I want to say one thing real quick. I greatly appreciate what you do with the weekly challenge of not drinking. A couple of years ago I got really drunk with some Brothers and my Then fiancé now wife thought I had a problem I promised her I wouldn’t drink for three months just to show there wasn’t an issue. I then fulfilled our three month deal and on a trip to Denver had my first drinks with her to “Celebrate“ my non-dependency. I’ve been watching y’all for the last couple of years and want to join in on this upcoming week of sobriety. I work in the liquor industry and definitely drink whether it be A glass or more than that every other day. Sorry I’m excited to join in on the week of sobriety. Another born and bred Austinite To follow Austinites Hook Em 🤘🏽
If Ralphy likes it then it must be good 😋.... now I will watch the rest of your review to see what you guys think 😀
I'm all in for dry week. I rarely drink. But on a side note...if I was gonna get a bottle of corn whiskey about 100 bucks what would I get? I saw the review on the baby blue and it made me wanna try a great corn whiskey...hifive
I looked it up in my area (Phoenix, AZ) and Laphroig 10 is actually $5 cheaper then the Smokey Joes out here. Does that still make this a "budget" Islay? ~Goes to look up my own question according to prices out here~ Okay. I guess it sorta fits in the Budget. There are several, very good Islays I have had that are the $20-25 range and just wondered if they would be along those lines. Mostly I speak of like Islay Gold (very good try btw) Shieldaig, and a hand full of others. Compared to most other Ilays, $30-40 range, for me, is more like mid-tier.
Appreciat ethe reviews as always guys and have yourself a wonderful dry week. I know I need it. Been a little bit of hard times and hard times on myself the last 2 weeks.
dry week is my birthday, this will have to get tabled.
I feel like I can taste it, the way y'all describe it.
I have tried Smokey Joe - it is really good if you like Islay.
hi lads you should try highland park dragon legend its real good boys ....nice and it has lots of smoke you will like this 1
It was really great when Total Wine has this in little airplane bottles. Portable smoke.
I want to try a smokey whiskey. Should I buy Laphroaig 10 vs Smokey Joe?
I loved Smokey Joe!
Hey guys,
What are the Pros and Cons
In a Rare tasting in the Whisk(e)y flavor you can't find in any other Whisk(e)y
Hi, Whiskey vault,
could you try more of Czech whiskey? I know that you tried Hammerhead, but there is more. Stará Myslivecká, Trebitsch, Gold Cock.
You guys should do a combined review with Ralfy!
Next time y’all do a vote you should consider doing a ranked choice vote option. People could put their top three quintessential choices. For example I probably would have ranked them WT 101, Buffalo Trace, and Evan Williams BiB as the the most quintessential bourbons in that order.
I think its worth noting that the Traverse City Rye Barrel Proof is no longer listed as a product on their website. I understand its a rare whiskey, but I feel that a quintessential whiskey should still be in production. I think its worth looking into.
Thanks for the review. I have been wondering about this stuff for a while now and now I'm ready to purchase a bottle. I'm curious about something. So do you guys (Daniel and Rex) have an issue with Erik or are you just "busting balls? It seems like there is some animosity there. Just asking.
I’m getting a whiff of sweat socks, hockey gloves, grilled bacon, barbecue sauce and the tail end of a broccoli fart but I like it. A lot.
The hubby and I tried this on 2 whisky tasting sessions and it’s a no go for us... we’re 2 novices and out of the 6 we tried ( glenfiddich 12, Jameson, Smokey joe islay, glenlivet 12, black label 12 & dewars) he liked Dewars and I liked Johnny Walker Black , glenlivet & glenfiddich.
Is it acceptable to postpone Dry-Week to a later time/date? I work in IT for a school district...
When nosing, have y’all ever nosed a whiskey in a bottle & it smelled good but after putting it in a glass it smelled like crap?
Damn! I’m still trying to find Black Bottle
Hah! I won the "When will Daniel notice the Laphroig bottle?" bet (I said before dry week started).
"Ooooh, oh yeah... Oh wow!"
"Right!?"
Glencadam 13 is AMAZING!
I would love to try the US version of BT, because from what I've read, we get a watered down version here in Aus which isn't that nice.
Matthew Paynting same here in the UK 😭 but I found a small bottle of USA bottling and its sooo much better!!
Looks like $37 at the Total Wine near me, but that's kind of far, can get Lagavulin 8 for $40 much closer to me ...
I’m gonna start drinking on dry week 😄
I would commit to the dry week if it was not also my wedding week. Plus i turned 21 2 weeks ago. I will be enjoying blantons, eh tayler and monkey shoulder until the honeymoon i have a bottle of makers private select i am saving.
It's actually a really good price $55 nzd off the top of my head that's about $38-40 usd, I don't know about in the US but it's pretty easy to get here
Laphroig is always pretty cheap here. But I usually buy it at costco.
Got this at total wine a couple months ago. I think it was about $30. My total wine guy recommended it when I asked for "a punch in the sack" Scotch.
Edit: nevermind they just looked it up
I was going to send this one in 😅 looks like I gotta find a new bottle to send in lol
I prefer Wild Turkey 101 over Buffalo Trace, but the Buffalo Trace I get in the UK is also lower proof I believe (40% ABV), so my mind may change if I had it with a higher proof.
It's always disappointing when I see something here that I'd like to try only to find out it's not available in the VA ABC system. I also think that Daniel was doing a pretty good impression of David Mitchell's character from the snooker sketches by the end.
Casey ...Soon to be moving to Austin, TX...
36 bucks in Minnesota. Insane value
Waiting on Erik Waits response to this 😂
Did Daniel say he can get Ardbeg 10 for $36???
I work week on week off at the hospital , so every other week is dry week for me
