Building the Custom Titanium Hardtail of my Dreams

- Back in July when I officially became sponsorless, I started thinking about exactly the bike I wanted for the first time in years. I knew I wanted a titanium hardtail, but nobody made the exact geometry I really preferred. The reach was always too long, or the size small had some bend in the seat tube that would prevent my dropper post from being inserted the whole way.
That’s when I realized that “zero-compromise” would mean having a custom frame built. So I started my conversation with Sage, who makes built to order titanium frames out of Oregon. Not only did I get the exact geometry that I wanted, but also a custom paint job. I was against painting the titanium at all from the start, but they won me over with a custom Cerakote scheme that covers only the rear of the bike.
I also picked out all the parts for this bike. Some companies I had contacts at, and I was able to get a discount or even a free part. But back when I started my orders, many companies were fresh out of stock, and so I needed to pay full retail sideways to get the parts in time. Had I compromised and taken parts that were available, or parts I could get for free, it would have been just that-a compromise.
Now that the bike is finished, I’m really wondering how it rides! I took it down a dirt road while lugging around a bunch of cameras to get the finished shots, and then promptly got sick. Next week I’ll ride the bike in all sorts of different conditions, and then go into more detail about the geometry!

I’m just glad you went this way instead of “this season I’m going to ride an entry-level budget bike” and then pop up with a $4000 bike. I’ve unsubscribed to at least two channels for that. I admire nice bikes, but I don’t like being told stuff that costs more than my car is entry level. Custom bikes are worth what you’re willing to pay and are awesome.
I recently bought by most expensive bike ($6000 CAD) on sale for $4200. They salesman referred to it as dirt cheap. Disgusted me. I lost an entire nights sleep debating if I should drop that kind of cash and spent hours justifying it, Couldn't believe the Spec I wanted (marzocchi and fox float with deore drivetrain) was in that price bracket, but figured I deserved it as I have made my way after years of ridindg 90's bikes and other entry level modern bikes. It cost almost as much as my ATV and this guy called it dirt cheap. really rubbed me the wrong way, however Im happy with the bike but we are getting way to comfortable calling these bikes cheap or entry level.
Poor people problems
4000 for a full suspension bike is definitely entry-level
Im no expert but i feel this is every bit of 4000$ maybe even more, hell the cranks alone are worth more than my car 😂😂
$4000 for a full sus is entry level and a good price if you look at bikes now a trail bike costs 4.5k upward for the bottom spec so 4k is the budget option
Would love to see a deep dive video into the frame geometry and your decision making.
Agreed

That’s what I was hoping for
That rear triangle looks very similar to the atomlab trail king hard tail.
@@redryder464 I don’t see it. I rode for Atomlab and still ride for Mike to this day. You should check out his new bikes. Arq Bikes and Tor Cycling are his high end parts. If you liked Atomlab you’ll love his new stuff.
The paintjob might not be quite my type, but damn, that attention to detail is sick! Also, love the overall clean style! Awesome job, awesome bike.
I agree with you on everything but the paint job, I love the light blue camo that cuts off. Great pick
I'm into cars as much as bikes, and a well built custom titanium bike for me is like a...
...Jaguar XJ220 in silver!
Why did you said Hanukkah
Woah, very cool to see the shots in the Sage shop picturing the Toob Bender and The Creator Frame Fixture that I designed and manufactured in Grand Rapids, MI. Sick, bike, Seth. Can't wait to see more!
I was blown away by the tooling! Having “built” a tall bike frame using clamps and chunks of wood as a jig, it was easy to appreciate. We talked a lot about the fixture, the software, and your tools in general!
Instantly wondered if the Roggenbuck guy ™ had a say in framebuilding itself or your machinery is now widespread and appreciated. Congrats!
Best frame jig in the business!
Awesome man, I live in Grand Rapids!
@@SethsBikeHacks Hi seth I was wondering what head angle you chose for the bike. Is there a geometry list somewhere or maybe I missed it in the video
Sick bike Seth! As an Oregon local myself, I appreciate you supporting our small businesses (especially one that is 10 mins from my old house :))! This is the perfect bike for you!
These bikes are made in Tennessee, not Oregon. Company is based in Beaverton though
Amazing bike 👍🏼
@@chrisclifford4109 If you are referring to these as being Lynskey made frames, I can assure you they are not. We no longer produce frames with Lynskey (been that way since 2020) and only produce our frames in house.
I live five minutes from Ruckus Composites in Portland, when he made the comment about carbon repair all I could do was laugh.
@@biggaywizard Love the guys at Ruckus. Shawn is a good friend of mine and a super genius guy as well. Can't say enough good things about him and Ruckus.
Congratulations on your new titanium bike! I completed a similar titanium bike build journey last year and can totally relate to the feeling of all the hard work you've done in your life being put into rewarding yourself with a special bike. Enjoy the first ride and the adventures to come.
Pretty sure he’s got like 10 special bikes
Is it just me or does it bother you that he put cane creek components on a $14,000 bike? It's like putting steelies on a Lamborghini.
@@ryanfrederiksen4078 I'm pretty sure their like 700$ titanium cranks
@@dougsrosen you're about $400 short lol. Also creek makes good stuff idk what he's on about lol.
@@dougsrosen I meant the bearings the cranks are cool.
I work at a bike shop and whenever we have brake hose rattling in the frame we wrap a zip tie around it and leave the tail uncut, so when you push it into the frame it pushes against the sides and stops the rattling.
This is actually a trick also used in sailing to keep wires from slapping inside the mast
Thanks for including a little shot of BikeCAD in there! The bike looks amazing. Love all the Easter eggs in the camo.
A freakin’ masterpiece Seth . It’s looks so clean and sleek. The component choice is perfection especially those Ewing cranks
I'm not even that short, 5' 10". I loved switching to 165 cranks from 175. Combined with slim pedals, I can actually spin up and put power down when I'd often be half ratcheting to avoid strikes before. A "DH" focused upgrade that helped me a ton in my XC riding. Also great for DH!
Absolutely gorgeous bike, Seth. Love the colour of raw titanium. So much cooler than a carbon frame, IMO. I'm going to be building up a bike (road, not MTB) of my own in the spring and I hope mine turns out as well as yours did.
It's been 5 years since I watched your videos, I followed your bike hacks and enjoyed every moment watching and customising my bike but now I ended up buying a motorcycle but still I'm getting nostalgia watching this.
Crazy to see you go from Diamondback to Revel and now a custom titanium bike. Nothing against Diamondback, but that's a big leap!
I don’t think I’ve been this early to anything in my life
Same
Not even your own birth? Damn. Your poor mother must've been exhausted.
I’m pretty late
Seth thats a sick bike and really enjoyed watching the build.Good on you for all the hard work youve put in entertaining us all,so well deserved, get well soon and looking forward to watching you put it through its paces.
I'm so jealous, I'd love a bike like that 😍
You've built a lot of bikes on this channel, but I think this is something special. I can't wait to see it in action!
This bike is sick! Personally, I think anodizing the cranks to match the paint scheme would be amazing. The blues you’d get from anodizing are the perfect fit. Given they would wear over time but the thought is cool.
I never thought I'd be so jealous of a bike, but this custom titanium ride looks like it has more personality than I do! Kudos to the builder for putting in all the time and effort to make it truly one-of-a-kind. I'm sure it's worth every penny (if you have unlimited funds, that is).
its a piece of metal bloody hell your putting ya self down .how many ppl have gone without for him 2 buy a 14k bike sorry but it duz not help and showing kids of today 2 be cool u need a 14grand bike.....crazy

So glad to see some love for hard tails! Soo many guys with crazy expensive full suspension and e-bikes without the skills to actually us them, I think everyone should own a hard tail!
This is absolutely the video I needed to see today!!!! So absolutely insane. Please just keep the content coming!
This is a bike of dreams. Big respect for you Seth keep it up man.
I have been watching the channel for 3 years, you are the one who got me into mountain biking, now I race NICA and am loving it,it’s cool to see you build the hard tail of your dreams, can’t wait to see you shred on it🤙
This bike is one of my favorite builds I’ve seen
Congrats Seth! It’s gorgeous. Can’t wait for the ride impressions video
Beautiful bike. Looking forward to part 2. Get well soon!
Appreciate the description of an enduro vs CC vs trail bike

Never miss a single video ever. You are at your own entire level Seth. There is no other form of entertainment I watch more than your video’s. Thanks for being you 🤘.
I think this has to be one of the most beautiful bikes i’ve ever seen. If i had an unlimited budget, i would commission a Ti hardtail like you have, and build it with beautiful parts. I am almost glad you have parted with Diamondback, as i don’t think they could have ever made something as beautiful as this
I absolutely love the way you make content here! You’ve gotten me back into biking and have taught me a ton of knowledge. You deserve to be able to build a no budget bike every once in a while and quite honestly it’s satisfying to see something like that and look at the creativity and time and effort that was put into a build like that. Keep it up!
Component choice was excellent. Love everything about it. Absolutely beautiful welds too!
I love that you really use your 3D printer for functional stuff - it‘s exactly what a 3D printer is made for. 👍🏼
Hardtails are amazing, a simple frame is a beautiful frame.
I was expecting 'dream build' spheric music and glamour shots of the assembly, but that is one awesome bike for sure. Titanium definitely is the material for the 'rest of your life bike'. 5 years ago I sold almost my whole bike collection to buy a titanium 1x gravel bike. Haven't regretted it a single day. And @SethsBikeHacks, You can now officially join the 'Brotanium' Strava group 😄.
What a beautiful bike! Thanks for teaching me so much.
Actually love that you included some of the welding process stuff, as a welder myself this bought me much joy
Who would of thought we’d see Seth go from trying out rev grips in a video to using them on his dream bike!
When it comes to investment, diversification is key. That is why I have my interests set on key sectors based on performance and projected growth. They range from the EV sector, renewable energy, Tech, and Health.
Hard time all around the Crypto market especially with the collapse of BTC, yet I still acquire $27,000 every 14 days from my investment with a platform in town.
I'm confused especially in this current situation that's affecting the market, how could y'all earn that?
currently earning $15,000 a week. God bless Pamela and his platforms, she has been a blessing to my family.
You know, one thing about this platform (Pamela K Weaver) is her profits are secure,d and over a💯 return on investments
Trading with an expert is the best strategy for both beginners and investors who have little time or no time to monitor their trade
Man, that is the coolest titanium bike i ever seen, especially the camouflage stickers, totally suite a mountain biker soul...cant wait to see you ride on it Seth.
This is just so so cool Seth. Congrats on the hard work and success. Hope this brings you much joy in the coming years!
I don't think Seth knows that Oz Cycle is in prison for beating a neighbour's dog to death..
👆👆👆Congratulations fan you've👆👆👆 been selected among my shortlisted winner 🎁🎁🎁.
Bit unfortunate that the Ozcycle CZcams account was promoted as he was recently sent to prison for beating his neighbors dog, taking it to an empty neighboring property and leaving it there for five days before returning to kill it.
That has now become my dream hardtail frame paintjob
I've found your content to have this therapeutic vibe to it. Even though I've started being into motorcycles, your content just hits differently.
i used to watch oz cycle until i found out why he was jailed.
please don't direct any admiration (or traffic) to OzCycle. He's currently in prison for animal cruelty, abducting and then fatally injuring his neighbours dog.
For real
Wishing you a quick and full recovery!
Congratulations Seth! What a sick bike! I am looking forward to more videos of you having fun on this bike.
Carbon fibre will outlast a titanium in terms of fatigue, because as Ti is very resistant to fatigue, carbon fibre is immune to fatigue. However, Ti would most likely be quite a bit more resistant to crashing into sharp objects. If anyone gives a shit.
Well, a good quality steel is also very resistant to fatigue, and even better, if the frame is well designed, It can also have a springy feel, very responsive. Carbon fibre for me is a big no no, since I've seen it break without prior warning (punctures and chips can eat away the cohesive strength of the fibre). Titanium is great for being in the middle of performance character between aluminium and steel, plus resistant to corrosion. Good for climbers and people who like a nimble frame that's also supple (if the design of the frame allows it). Anyway, different horses for different courses :)
@@jorgecap3898 steel is not very resistant to fatigue. I've seen a few chromoly bikes that have weakened over 15-20 years just from using high quality rim brakes (like XTR brakes from the 90s)
Saying that carbon fibre is immune to fatigue is very misleading. Fibre-reinforced composites have different failure modes compared to metals, and none of them is analogous to fatigue. However composites can also fail due to cyclic loading below their ultimate strength, in fact, they are considered more dangerous, because in most cases the failure is governed by the snapping of the fibres. The response of carbon fibres to cyclic loading is not very well understood, we only have statistical methods to determine the likeliness of failure after a given amount of load cycles. Moreover, failure is very sudden, thus the signs are impossible to detect (this is one of the reasons why you see carbon frames snap in half from time to time, the other is of course the poor impact resistance).
All that being said a titanium frame will usually last longer on a mountain bike because of its impact resistance. You are much more likely to crash your fancy carbon bike and snap the frame in half before the titanium frame begins to fail due to fatigue. Composites are the best for saving weight but not for durability.
@@matecser7256 first of all, are you an engineer? The terms you use seem to point towards that. I should've said carbon fibre is virtually immune to fatigue (as far as I know). I had seen a video somewhere of carbon fibre frame fatigue testing and after over a million cycles, the frame did not lose any strength. That's just one video.
I also want to point out there is no best material for building a bike, only different materials that work for certain situations better than others. Thanks for the reply!
@@callumcarscadden4865 Yes, I'm studying aerospace engineering (rn I'm preparing for my aerospace structures and materials exam). Also, I did not say what the best material for a frame is, but that one is more suited for a specific purpose (obviously there are a lot of factors). And yes, you can engineer something to withstand virtually an infinite number of load cycles, but that goes for metals as well. In fact, in fatigue-limited design, it is very common to design for the so-called "endurance limit", which means that the cracks won't grow and your structure (in theory) will last forever.
Sorry for all the scientific answers but this is the only way to justify writing youtube comments during my study time.
I’m building up a Canfield Yelli frame and I couldn’t be more stoked on your build! I felt building “your life up to a build” so hard and I appreciate you working so hard to get this far. Rip them trails good sir you deserve it!!
Also I’m coming from a 2016 DB Mason Pro. I will love that bike till the day I die but it’s nice to expand to new territory
I like the hidden shape of North Carolina in the camo paint job in front of the rear wheel.
Seth, I've been watching ever since you were riding street in Florida on your Trek 4900. I don't even own a mountain bike, but I still want to get into it at some point. Congrats on how far you've come, you deserve it with how much work you've put in.
I can fully appreciate this video and how you feel about your new bike having had a custom made Roberts Roughstuff expedition bike made for me around 15 years ago, it seemed horrendously expensive at the time but I have now done thousands of miles on it and had some great adventures and the price has long been forgotten.
Truly an aspirational build. Can’t wait to see how you like it. Get well!
That's a beautiful bike! I can't wait to see it on the trail
This is my favorite video. My father in law had a titanium road bike custom built for his retirement. From the measurements to the parts, he chose everything so meticulously. I cannot believe how light it is and beautiful. Unfortunately he can’t ride anymore, but he does like to have the bike brought to the bedroom to stare at it. I will be sending this video to him.
that little map of NC is an awesome touch in the paint.
I use the same tire combo and they feel truly great for the rougher XC rides. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do and look forward to hear your thoughts on them.
Get well Seth, enjoy the new bike, looks great.
@@Bermpeak00 not sure you're really Seth :-o
Wow, not one part that you settled for. I love the paint! I am working on a custom hardtail myself and I am SO excited! It looks like you made all the changes to the geo of the powerline that I would as well.
Congrats Seth!! Been watching you for a few years now, come a long way since riding that Trek in Florida!!!
Enjoy man!🎉

Love that you went with a titanium hard tail that is classy! And those cranks are blingin! Sweet!
Got a diamondback hardtail for Christmas, and am planning to visit berm park for spring break. Love what you do.
So sick! Beautiful choices. Can’t wait to see how it rides.
Sweet build and that frame is a thing of beauty.
I built up a titanium bike this summer myself, as my Bafang mid drive killed the bottom bracket shell on my old specialized hardrock. New bike specs are pretty sick too: the frame is a Carver 96'er, drive train is a BBSHD mid drive pulling a Shimano Alfine 8 hub, riding on a rockshox recon 100mm fork, with TRP spyre cable brakes. The thing is a beast on the road or trails, and the split wheel size (26" rear, 29" front) is a lot of fun. Get well soon Seth!
Yeah thats SICK AF. Literally the dream, enjoy it to the max dude 👍🏻
That's a beauty mate! I bought a custom Curtis hardcore hardtail a few years back, it was the best decision ever.
I love the feel of the trp lever for the slate 4
...simply stunning bike, and no-one is more deserving than you Seth. You're living the dream Sir!
Came out beautiful. Nice work and awsome setup
That's sick! Hope you feel better soon!
The easter eggs in the camo, and the knife were top notch.
I had a Kona Hei Hei ti frame with a Marz Bomber(chrome with red) way back when. It was my training/ride/race bike...loved it. It had a pop from the flex in the chainstays and to this day the only frame I didn't break...and that's after owning oodles of steel, aluminum and carbon frames. Bomb proof. And pretty sure I never serviced that Bomber fork and it rode and rode!
Absolutely beautiful
Dope. Also have connections to the Blur Ridge, paint is awesome. Looking forward to seeing the easter eggs. Perfection is often a matter of the eye of beholder and IMO this is it for a trail HT. Nicely done! Feel better soon, hopefully it's over and done quick for you.
i feel like seth is the only guy to fully geek out over something but still seem like the coolest guy ever for his badass riding skills
My god Seth! Epic build. I'm not a fan of modern bikes. I'm stuck in the 90's. This one sparks that excitement I get when "staring" at a quality custom bike. It reminds me of the simpler times when we had so many choices of home grown high end frames and parts. I've been collecting ultra rare custom parts from the glory days to assemble my dream bike. I have to say that this inspires me to crank of few of them out. I can for sure build the 90's equivalent to your bike. If I had an unlimited budget though. This is exactly what I would build. It's nothing short of pure art.
That bike is disrespectfully good looking. I absolutely adore darker raw metals and blue paint on mountain bike. Shoot I am jealous!
Happy for you Seth!! Not everyone gets to build their ultimate dream bike. Hope you feel better soon man and ride the bike of your life
Get well soon, Seth! Crazy cool bike you designed!

Absolutely gorgeous bike. Just threw Crue's on my Offering couple months ago, they have to be the best pedals I've ever ridden
Totally agree about the Crue pedals. For the people that know about them, they are amazing. Everyone else just needs to go get them to see what the fuss is about.
Loving how you snuck your dog into the camo scheme. Truly a one off.
I'm not nearly experienced enough to really understand and appreciate it to the fullest degree
but this looks like *the* perfect bike
not that I would ever be able to afford anything like it in my lifetime
I absolutely love the paint

Deeply cool build.Back in the mid 90s I had a Raleigh Torus Titanium with a set of Marzocchi DH3 "downhill" forks with a whopping 3"(lol) of travel.I took off the bar ends, put on a Club Roost riser bar and that bike did everything.Titanium is the best,I`d have another Ti frame in a heartbeat if I could afford one.
