  • Today we will do an experiment. I found this Trek Roscoe 6 Mountain Bike which was pretty much brand new. The seller had a pretty bad listing with awful photos and a very short description. I bought it for as low as he would take, washed the bike, prepared it for sale, and took some really good pictures of it. How much will we get for it?

It's more about that bad photos make the seller or the purchase itself seem shady while a good photo indicates that the seller actually cares on selling his product. This is why a lot of people are willing to pay more just to ensure that their purchase is worth it.

It's stupid. As a general rule, you cannot make money flipping bikes.
This guy drove hundreds of miles at $5 bucks a gallon to buy the bike. Then he spent hours washing and tuning the bike. Then spent more driving around to show the bike, probably 6 dollars a gallon this time. For all that work, he made a hundred whole dollars.
Where he actually made money is making this video. He is full time CZcamsR. That is his job. Any money he made doing it is just extra, because the goal was not profit on the bike, the goal was profit on the video, which is probably in the 20 thousand dollar range.
A guy a follow named "Uncle Tony" recently uploaded a video of how much money he made painting his engine. He's got about 200k subs. He made 11 thousand dollars on that video.
Berm Peak has millions of subscribers and probably hundreds of thousands of views on this video within a month. Uncle Tony barely had 10s thousands of views. So this video should be worth at least 20k Dollars. Nobody would do all that work and put all those miles on his new-ish pick up truck to make a hundred bucks.

There's probably a good reason why Seth didn't proceed with a full rundown of the sale. The buyer took advantage of Seth's generosity. Pricing it at 999 is already a steal and her decision to meet up at a bike shop and to suddenly offer 860 to Seth is a scummy move. Didn't they agree to a 950 deal?

Idk if it's "greedy" to expect someone to pay the price they agreed to **and** had a shop/mechanic verify the bike was actually worth **at least** that much... It's kind of a weird spot to put you in to start with (i.e. haggling in front of a bike shop), and having a mechanic say "yeah, the thing's mint; we sell'em for $1200 right inside" and she still turns around and says "$860, deal?" Pretty uncool, imo. Point being: you're generous, a good steward of the sport, and while it's obviously not all about the money, this could set kind of a bad precedent (though of course this kind of behavior is rife elsewhere on Marketplace). And I get it, she was trying to a) not get taken advantage of, and b) get a good deal, and that's totally fine -- but both those points would have been true even if she'd paid $999 or certainly $950. Taking $900 makes Seth the one who got taken advantage of, and he def doesn't deserve it given all he's done for the sport in the Asheville area.

Also, Trek warranties the frame, not the purchase as I recall, so it’s not like she’d be losing the lifetime warranty. In any case, that’s par for the course buying used, and Seth’s point that the BBB value assumes a year-old bike has measurable wear on components is more applicable here, except this bike has no appreciable wear.

Seth, Something I saw on TikTok is to never go $999. People with the extra money will enter search parameters starting at $1k and will never see your ad. By pricing it initially at $999 you've rendered your ad invisible to so many potential buyers. They said that the whole $999 thing is so 2010. Price your ads with nice round numbers and you should see better results. Hope this helps going forward. Love the series.

To be fair, had the seller done these things in the first place, they would have had to make one trip to meet with the seller but the fact that Seth had to drive an hour to get the bike may mean that there weren't potential buyers in that area and would have at least spent a couple of hours to drive to meet with a buyer and perhaps several buyers.

He made $100 and probably did at least 2 hours of work including pictures and photography, then spent probably another hour or so actually selling it. I think there's a lot of factors in this video that weren't considered to being the reason why the bike could be sold at a higher price. Yes, the pictures work wonders to show how good the condition of the bike is, but I think location also makes a big difference. Selling bikes in a place like South Carolina where Seth bought it may be much harder because of lack of interest and less trails in the area. Asheville is possibly one of the best places to sell a bike because of such a dense population of those interested in mountain biking, which might be a contributing factor for why Seth was able to sell it more quickly at a higher price

I recommend figuring out what type of bike is most popular in your area and sticking to that or get good at targeting a niche that has no competition. For example: I live in Nashville TN and work at a bike shop. Most people in Nashville are hipsters that want to start riding so they will gravitate to Hybrids or Good Vintage bikes with new parts.

Actually, with labor and shop essentials, probably lost a few or maybe broke even. If you work for $25/hour (which includes your garage overhead, tools and accumulated knowledge) travel time, fuel, vehicle wear and tear, it's a loss. Real business criteria. Sure $100 in pocket, but not profit. I put this here only for younger folks who may not understand the entire free market picture. If you were to only make $100 on each bike you spent 4 hours on, traveled 2 hours out and back to sell, you'd be in your parents basement forever.

I am a Trek employee. When we feel a used bike is the proper option for a customer, we tell them to meet the seller at a LBS because certain people dont know what to look for, sellers and buyers both. The most common thing we hear with bikes with big problems is "I bought this from someone..." and we immediately know the issue we are facing. So smart buyers will do this. Plus our mechanics are extremely good. When I say extremely, I mean I have been in the industry for years, working for brands like Cushcore, Specialized and other bike shops, now at Trek. These mechanics will look over your bike extensively and probably even test ride it themselves after checking bolts. Thats truly an awesome mechanic. We want the customer to have the best possible buying experience even if its not buying OUR bikes.
The other thing is that this is truly an awesome beginner MTB. I mean think about it. How many hardtails, even used, can you buy with a dropper post under or around 1k? Not very many. Bang for the buck, this thing is damn hard to beat. The ONLY change I would personally like to see is to get rid of the square taper BB. But for a beginner? Who cares! That thing will totally rip!
And for Seth directly, You certainly already know this, but you lost money on this after the tools and bottles and stuff. And add in the time in labor and on top of the driving and rescources after fixing it up, you spent at least $150 on it afterwards. I also understand you motivation to get new riders out there using gear instead of keeping it sitting. Glad it went to a good new rider experimenting/exploring in the MTB scene.

Let me start by saying that I really like Flip Bike and your other videos that have entertained me and helped me learn new things about MTBs. It is very helpful to people and promotes fixing bikes up rather than adding to the waste in our dumps. You have always been a class act with everything that you do. This video was not one of your best near the end of your video. When you said that it would have been a cool ending by driving down and waving $100 bucks in the previous owner’s face, I could not believe that you would say something like that. You said that you decided not to do it because you didm’t want to drive down there. Well the only difference is proximity, because you basically did the same thing only digitally. I am not sure if the guy that you initially bought the bike from was not great to work with or even mean to you. We all say things that we sometimes wish that we could take back so I get it. I always had someone to “reel me in” when I said or did something that was not great, so I am paying it forward.
