Building my Sister her First Mountain Bike (and testing it)

  • If you remember my old Trek Hardtail, you might remember that I gave it to my sister. Well, I have another sister, and she recently asked me for a mountain bike recommendation. Let's build her one!
    I used a Diamondback Sync'r Pro alloy frame, which we had converted into a single speed and used for various experiments. This bike was also my daily rider at one point, and had seen a lot of action.

    Watching your videos gave me the knowledge and confidence to fix, adjust and clean my parent's bikes as well as my sister's. I may not have the proper setup to true wheels, but I could make do with the brake pads and a ziptie and when they brought it to a bike shop, apparently, they were told there was not much to do with the bike. I discovered your channel in May this year when I was looking for a review for the Trek Marlin 5 and stumbled upon your flip bike for the 29er. I then proceeded to watch almost all of your videos just because of all the high quality content you make.
    You keep saying you hope we learn something or at least find your videos entertaining. Let me tell you: it's always both.

      As someone who bought a marlin 5 recently it rides nicely out of the box. Mine does need minor adjustments on the front derailleur but I am not concerned about it because I will be switching it out to a 1x drivetrain in the next few months. Also the saddle is not right for my butt major soreness after the first multi hour ride.

    Sanding or sharpening with water makes it so the particulate coming off forms a slurry that helps with getting between the cracks/bumps of the surface (i think)

      it also stops you from huffing paint.

    • @MarvinWestmaas
      @MarvinWestmaas Před rokem +34

      Why do we often lubricate band saws, press drills, lathe's and equivalent metal working devices? Because the lubrication helps with -> preventing clogging by removing particles, aid with cooling and in some cases the slurry is indeed also abrasive.
      If you wet sand with a more coarse paper it will be a more abrasive slurry because the particles will be bigger. The water will also de-clog the sandpaper more easily.
      The biggest benefit of wet-sanding is therefore being able to use a really fine grid without it clogging up immediately.
      I think...

    Hey Seth! To answer your question about wet sanding. To my knowledge adding water while sanding helps lower the temperature caused by the friction of the sandpaper. Dry sanding builds up a lot more heat and can actually melt the clear coat and create burn marks.
    If you want to step up your paint job game you can try lightly wet sanding after the clear coat with 1000 grit followed by an automotive polish. Now that would really give it a glassy finish.
    Great job on the content. I can't wait for more flip bikes!

    Seth, I need to thank you. After watching your videos for a while I started looking for mountain bikes on eBay. Eventually, I found one for very cheap which was exactly the same model of the bike that was stolen from me 8 years ago, and I knew I had to get it right away. Better yet, the bike was in good condition but was clearly overdue for maintenance. I spent an entire weekend fixing the bike and replacing some parts, and you wouldn’t believe how happy I was to get my old bike back in perfectly working condition. I don’t really do a lot of mountain biking, but I like to go for bike rides in the evening while listening to a podcast and hitting a few obstacles like stairs and small jumps around my neighbourhood. It’s a new habit that I’m trying to build that adds a lot of value to my days. Thank you for inspiring me to get back a piece of my childhood that was taken away from me a long time ago.

Wet sanding works because water or any other liqiud keeps sandpaper from being clogged. also particles (ussually sanded paint) becomes abrasive together with sandpaper and its microscratching the surface, creating even but relativelly porous surface, which is best for adhesion of new paint. Sweet build.
    You should try VHS 2.0 chain stay protector. It has knobs with air pockets, so they dampen the noise. but it will do a great job at protecting the chain stay, and keep the noise down. it's secured by 3M VHB adhesive, so it's gonna stay put for a long time.
