  • When the old bathroom gets torn down, the new one has to be working to take its place. In order to use the bathtub, the tiles need to be done around it and the fixtures installs. This time, I set those tiles.

    Nice job.......Can I make this suggestion for anyone starting the same job...When you silicone around the tub make sure it is the mould resistant type, also fill the tub with water until the sealant cures. Doing this will prevent it tearing and pulling away from the wall the first time you use the bath.

    I always plum a center line on the back wall and center the first tile in the middle to insure the same size tile piece at each side wall, although a little less important for a subway tile. Also, good practice to tile each row (back, fixture side and head side) before starting the next row. This helps to keep all the gout lines lined up and matching as minor adjustments can be accomplished as the tile progresses up the wall, especially if your tile is going all the way up to the ceiling.

    The waterproofing membrane we're required to paint 2 two coats of prior to tiling wet areas costs $215 for 15litres! With that said, I'm not going to be banging no nails into the wall to destroy that expensive membrane and risk moisture getting through, just to hold up a little bullnose tile. a well placed plank on the floor (leaning against the wall will hold it there, or nice wide masking tape... or simply start at the bottom first like most other wall tiling. Nice job though, looked pretty good and you sure got going to get it all layed with one mix of mud

    I love the look you have there. I did the Victorian tongue and groove board look in my bathroom when I came here but, despite my over-zealous sealing, water still got down the back at the shower end of the bath. Mind you, it lasted almost 18 years before I noticed damp. Now I've got the modern bathroom my wife liked.

    I agree with you as a home owner, but in insurance business we are happy when 1000 litres of water goes to the drain than floats on tiles and end up in structures. Our houses are also build to last. When I watch american tv shows like extreme house makeover where they build homes for people in a week, it looks like houses are made from paper and plywood. You did the job nicely and I watched all your videos. Just wanted to write about our strictions. Keep up!

      No house is really "built to last." At least, not without consistent maintenance over the years. Everything gets damaged, rots, or corrodes if uncared for. Properly cared for, our houses can last a century, or longer.

    Hi. Great job! Can you help me with something. You have used tiles that have a rounded,white glazed edges (sometimes called bullnose edging). They make it super-easy to do edges. Normally with many tiles the edges are NOT glazed, you will see terracotta there, so you need an edging. I am finding it nearly impossible to find white subway tiles with this kind of edging. Can you tell me where you got your tiles from? Thanks. Would be much appreciated. I hope you will respond. I know this is years after you posted this, but I live in hope! :)

    Water isolation in US is poor. In Finland you just cant install tubs or showers in a room unless it is first isolated the whole area, walls and floor. All water that is spilled on the floor or walls has to access the drain eventually.

    • @IBuildItHome
      @IBuildItHome  Před 10 lety +3

      That's sounds extreme and unnecessary. But, if it's your building code, you have to follow it or face the consequences. IF that's in your code, we have to wonder what ridiculous thing comes next, and when will the idiots introduce it here.
      As far as I'm concerned, building codes should be stripped down to the basics - the important things like fundamental structure, plumbing and electrical. Reduce bureaucracy and let us live free, like we used to do (and survived just fine) for thousands of years.
      BTW, I'm in Canada, not US.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine Před 9 lety +6

      a25751 Oh really? Great, You do that for your kitchens too right? And laundry rooms? You know, any room with water running to it? Gosh. You might as well do it to the entire house! Someone might spill a drink. I assume this applies to all the spaces the pipes run through right? What if a pipe gets damaged! Gotta isolate those too along redundant channels to divert the water out of the structure! If it got wet even once everything would be ruined!
      I'm being a little hyperbolous here, but your "water isolation" regulations seem draconian and severe. A little water won't do much lasting damage to anything, and a little water will get into everything no matter how well you isolate it. It's the nature of houses and the real world. What John has done seems entirely capable of preventing water from being a problem.
      And while I'm sure building codes are all very well intentioned, at the end of the day, if it works, it's good enough. I mean, it's great that there are base-line regulations mandating that buildings be constructed to a certain standard to ensure the safety of the occupants of any given building, especially when a building is public, or otherwise put to a commercial purpose, but there's a limit where reason ends and we put on our steel-mesh gloves and safety glasses to cut construction paper with safety-scissors at arms length while a medical team stands by.
