Superb job on this vid and the time stamps are great for all … always informative and energetic vids! Hope your week is starting off strong
Seriously thank you for sharing your knowledge very noble and helpful!
You have the best videos for a DIY guy like me, so thank you very much! Timestamp 1:27 shows 11 1/4" but I think it's 11 3/4. It matters when adding the gaps to get the 12" starting line right?
Which line did you plum for the center is it the original or the sixteen off the center please
This was so helpful! And the way you explained everything made it so easy to understand and encouraged me to do the shower myself. Thank you 🙏🏽
I’ve been tiling 30 years and I must say this guy gets it right.
I appreciate that Jeffrey! I hope all is well. Take care!
My sentiments exactly, was just thinking how much my father would like this guy… is the most excellent Laborer married I wonder? His ring finger says he is, must have a great bonding agent with his wifey. 😊
I’ve been tiling since I started this video so comments like this encourage me that I’m in the right place! Haha
The reason for ledger/cleat board is to be able to install pan tile 1st for overlapping purposes to shed water to the drain. Not because pan isn't level. Hopefully he's pouring his own pan not pre-fabbed.
I couldnt agree more! you explain everything to a tee....@@TheExcellentLaborer
The ONLY video that shows me how to start the first row with proper measurement, offset, and technique.
I’ve must have watched a 100 of tile instruction videos. This was one of the most thorough videos I’ve seen.
I take a lot of time to make these videos to keep the details in there. I love helping people. Thanks for watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer You are fantastic. Starting a new house for my kid and this will help me immensely keep an eye on the installer and their work. Wish you were in Phoenix area would have hired you to guide me. Thanks.
Love your videos very detail keep up the awesome videos
Can’t be serious dude can’t even read a tape measure read 11 1/4 tile wtf 🤣????
I think we all agree 🙏🏼
Thanks for the detailed demonstration, just one minor thing I observed is the width of the tile is 11 3/4 inch but not 11 1/4 so you install the second row 12 inch above the pan. Great work.
great observation! I am still trying to figure out why he went to 12" if the tile was only 11 .25"
Man I am glad you said this! I must have re-watched that section 20 times trying to figure out how he got to 12"! Thanks!
@@seanrichards tile is 11 3/4” he just said 1/4 instead of 3/4. He does it at 12” to allow 1/8” gap at the bottom and top of tile for grout.
I have never done anything like this before. I have gutted my entire bathroom and putting in a tile shower myself. I fill like I have bit off way more than what I should have but don't have to money to pay someone. I'm doing a 3x5x9.5tall with glass doors and bench. I'm watching you like a hawk haha. Couldn't do this without you.
It is definitely a big project to do what you were doing. My hat is off to you for tackling such a job. Patience is key. I’m glad I can help you out. I enjoy making these videos to help people. Stay tuned for more!
How did it come out ? I’m about to gut my shower and tile my tiny master bathroom shower
I went thru a 4 yr apprenticeship to be a journeyman tile setter. 1970s. Back then we used string to space horizontal, eye and measuring vertical. All tile surface was adhered with pure cement, on sand, cement and lime plaster on walls and ceilings, that we floated ourselves to true up all surfaces. Used black rubber pails to mix in. All tile was soaked in square laundry tub that also doubled as a wet lube for tile saw.
A 4 year apprenticeship for a job that takes 6 months to learn is just exploitation.
Sounds tedious, with all the convenience of tools and material development it’s no wonder the learning curve has dropped dramatically.
@@Vizzi12tile work in the 70s still standing strong, tile done in the last 20 years, falling apart. So pick your battle's I guess.
@@dragonrider9051 that’s not a product of installation many times, that’s a product of material quality.
@@dragonrider9051 you not lying. The old school guys were better at building things. Nowadays it's just about cutting corners getting paid and dipping
I've been using CZcams for about 11 years now and I didn't realize how useful it can be. Thanks for showing us how to do a tile shower, I always prefer a modern tile shower than those gross apartment looking showers that are made of plastic
I appreciate that. You are welcome!. CZcams is such a awesome tool to research things before you do them. I’m glad you found the channel helpful. Take care!
I just want to say, after watching your video multiple times, and a few others. I complete my first row of tile last night. Your video was on loop in the background to refer back to. THANK YOU!!! I was a nervous mess. But, it looks great!
Excellent video, just one pointer from a guy who works for one of the major tile setting mortar (ie thinset) manufacturers. Always put the water into your mixing bucket first, then slowly add the powder. You can add more water to adjust consistency if you need to. Most manufacturers will give you the maximum amount of water to add on the bag instructions. Same with grout or any cement based materials. They mix better.
Ok Mr. I work for major thin-set co. Let's see what u really know, whats the difference between gray or white thinset ????
@@smonroe207 so whats the answer?????
@@smonroe207, one is white and one is gray.
Hands down best shower tile video
Thank you! I try to keep all my videos complete and not for fluff. I appreciate you taking your time to let me know you like my content. I hope you have tremendous success with your projects!
This is the best hand step-by-step directions on installing a shower. I’ve been wanting to see from start to finish and kudos to this tile installer best on CZcams.
Thanks a lot Steven. I put a lot of time in this video I’m glad you found it helpful. Good luck on your tile project!
I'm getting ready to re-tile my bathtub surround. It's my first tile project, so I've watched about 8 million videos about it. I've picked up a lot of tips, but this video is one of the best I've seen for covering the whole process. So much good stuff. Thanks.
I've watched videos for two months. You have the most informative videos on CZcams. I'll be starting a 42" x 57" shower this weekend. Oh' God.
I’m glad to hear you did your research first Clay! That is half of the battle. That’s going to keep you busy for a while. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
The how-to I've seen. Simple and straightforward.
It’s best to use a half inch by half inch notched trowel on tile the size specifically because of the way it suctions the tile to the wall better. Also clean the thinset off the face of the tile and off the edges of the tile with a margin trowel in sponge as you go itll make grouting so much easier and just the entire process in general.
Just finished my first shower with only the help of your channel…what a life saver! Keep up the great work!!
I did the same job about 25 yrs ago and as a "rookie" made all the mistakes you talked about. Now my wife wants to redo the shower. That's why I'm watching your video.
Thanks for the tips.
Dennis "the Rookie"
your work is second to none may god continue to bless you and your family. bottom line
You just made my day Patrick. I really appreciate that. I know I am far from perfect but I try my best. Thank you for watching my channel!
Doing a tile shower tomorrow, learning from your video tonight
Fantastic video for the DIY. Clear, simple, concise. Get the wisdom only a pro can give you!
I appreciate that Harold!
This guy has the best DIY channel hands down
I’m a union worker for another trade that I won’t publicly mention lol but helping couple friends with weekend jobs gave me a passion for learning all trades including shower tiles. I’m naturally a homebody so watching this is more therapeutic to me than getting drunk at a bar LOL.
Love the quality and value of your videos bro. I’m hard-wired to details too. 👍🏽💯
Great step by step demonstration! Appreciate your explanation of the process, including the watch outs. Extremely helpful.
I really like how you made shelves from the tiles instead of using store bought plastic shelves
I’m using the same quartz from the vanity tops for the shelves and the niche.
I did a tile shower in my previous home. It came out surprisingly nice. I used 6" Tiles and designer tiles with a Teal, almost see through, Glass diamond design about 2/3 of the way up. I am in my 70's now and am seriously giving considering doing a shower here.
I followed your methods and did our shower. I’m a brickmason so I’m pretty good at layout and decorative patterns. The long wall I did a running bond with subway tile and the two end walls I did a herringbone. First time I’ve ever done tile let alone hanging cement board and waterproofing it. Very helpful videos.
Great vid. I would never be able to get away with "resting it on the scaffolding" LOL it would fall repeatedly
When I tiled my kitchen/dining room floor, my wife wanted black & white checkers. I did 12x12. Both tiles were the same brand, same specs, same everything, but the whites were consistently just a *little* bigger than the black. This ate at me forever. I got over it, but the, 'not every tile is perfect; it's ok' is really good advice. I know where the imperfections are, but literally nobody else does.
I have never tiled a shower but I plan on doing one that's why I am watching this video. After watching the video I think I can do it, just have to take my time. Excellent video
I'm doing my bathroom right now I demolished I piped in the shower faucet I had to move the drain. I set the shower pan using a tile redi pan .
Now I have to tile this is a great video. Thanks wish me luck.
I'm a hvac technician so I'm somewhat handy
Getting ready to tile the shower and floor this week. Thanks for the extra tips!
This was such a blessing and an exact example and replica of a shower that i have been wanting to do for some time now!! The job came out so visually pleasing and set up a perfect guide for when i go to install my diy shower!!!
28:23 it’s not luck, it’s experience !! 👌👍✨
Great work! Tiling is a bit of an art and it takes someone with patience and who takes pride in their finished work. You have both. If you are watching this video you could hire 10 tile setters and maybe one would be as good as he is.
Hubby and I did a tub surround and tile floor in our master bath 25 years ago. Although the cuts weren't perfect, those tiles still are perfect. No cracking, lifting, etc. I did regrout and seal everything about 4 years ago in preparation to sell. If done correctly, a tile job could last a lifetime. That house also had an original 1941 black and white tiled bathroom, that I regrouted and is in pristine shape to this day.
Excellent presentation and the most detailed instruction and step by step procedures I've seen on youtube. Thank you!
I am a DIYer and your detailed, step by step videos have been extremely helpful. Especially your explanations on the how and the why for each single step. I am still considered a novice and there are a bunch of little details mentioned in your video that are overlooked in others.
Best video I've seen on shower tile install- straight forward and common sense approach. I'm halfway through my job and was having a hard time with getting started on the tile. This is great! Thanks for sharing.
I've tiled before, but never a shower. I'm considering doin the walls and base myself and decide who does the next part. Your videos are awesome! They've helped me on a number of other reno's as well. Thanks for that :)
I will be tiling my first shower and after watching the video, I feel really confident. Thank you so much!’
Watching this for a friend and currently tiling the floors of an entire house. Great video
Speechless, What an amazing work !!! I took notes from the beginning until the end. Thank you so so much.
I have done 1 tiled bathtub and I’m getting ready to do a shower. This video is excellent and a great help. Thank you!
Good for you! I’m glad to hear your DIY project is going good. Stay tuned for more!
Your demos and explanations are excellent. Thank you for the information. I have been putting off completing our shower due to fear of the process. These videos have simplified it for me.
God i6 wish I i had your patience and skill! I did my own walk in floor and walls a few yetas ago and it isnt awful but you really make it look easy! Thank you for always taking the time to show the proper process for us less than!
I forgot to tell you , excellent job on the whole project, i,ll be watching you more than the others, thanks again, Joe
I haven't ever done a shower before but your video is just what I was looking for from start to finish Thank You for being very precise
Man, your precision was fantastic, loved the video and I'm definitely going to be using your method to re-model my shower. I'm going to be going for a triangle shaped shower so wish me luck.
You ex0lain things very clearly! My husband and I are in the process of tiling a shower with a bench.
Well crap. Now that you've done such a great instructional video I feel obligated to do that project I've been thinking about for the past couple years.
I haven't attempted tiling my shower yet due to no being familiar with how to setup the shower pan. You can bet I'll be saving this video for future reference. Thanks for the awesome content.
I enjoy doing tile showers. It’s rewarding when it’s all said and done. It’s definitely a lot of work. I appreciate your kind words Colton!
Great explanations, my wife and I have been talking about changing the tile in our shower. I think I can do it with your instructions. Thanks
You are the best teacher for people who like direct precise instruction .We watched your videos and they are by far the best for the do it yourself person. Bravo young man.👏👏👏
I like your presentation, you’ve done a good job on that end.
I started out watching CZcams, self
taught myself everything. I’m now building curbless showers and doing my own CZcams videos. Won a few awards and have around 4500 followers on Instagram.
Keep grinding brother.
I think you’ll want to toss that 1/4” and get yourself a 1/2” notch trowel for LFT. The best thing I started doing was keeping my hands clean by wearing gloves, keeping my tiles and grout lines clean with a sponge and keeping my tools clean. We all know the work it takes to clean off dried thinset.
Good work 💪🏻🔥
Why 1/2” instead of 1/4”? Won’t that leave too much mortar?
Absolutely fantastic videos my guy. This really helped me from start to finish. I love how you explain things very thoroughly because sometimes there is little steps you might miss or not think about, like the trimming of the cement board at the flanges.
He never explained how to replace the empty Wedi sausage caulk tube system.
I'm building a home. First time. We are doing a tiled shower and a tiled fully enclosed steam shower. Will have to figure out a lot of things.
Amazingly detailed video!
Great work!
I've tiled many showers. This is a very good tutorial.
Halfway throught he video you ask to leave a comment if you have or have not. I have not. We are paying a contractor. No idea what it all entails and after watching half this video I am confident I will never do this myself. Thank you for the great video and major appreciation to those who do this for a living!
You’re very good with explaining the details involved! Thanks, you’ll be my reference study👍
Definitely redoing my shower when I get back to FL.
So glad I spent the time to watch your video’s. I am doing a DIY shower. Scared to death but these have made it not seem so impossible. Wish me luck and throw a prayer my way 😅
What an inspiration. Hard work pays off. Thank you.
You’re videos are the best! Thanks for doing these and explaining things so thoroughly. 🙏😎👍
Thanks man! Helped a lot with my tile shower I’m currently doing
I’m doing my bathrooms now. Already demo’s 1. Thank you for this beginner vid.
I've never done any tiling before and have always wondered if I can do one. You make it look easy.
You can. As long as you take you’re time, you’ll be fine.
Ah ha, so that's what you do! (Tile shelves). I was wonder why all the shower video's of yours I've seen didn't have a niche made! Definitely doing this for my next bathroom, thank you
Exactly this is the perfect 👍 start to finish
Tile shower laying out tutorial !
Thank you my friend. It’s so well thought
Best video tutorial.
Thanks for saving me a ton of money. Grandpa used linoleum for shower in 1942 mountain cabin. Worked for 81 years! 30 miles from town. Tile guys wanted $3,000 just for labor.
You want him to work for beans?
Took me 2 days. I’ll do the math for you. $1,500 per day in labor.
We just got a quote over 4000 labor only for a 32 inch square stall...😢
I have always enjoyed doing tile and coming up with unique looks. The time is rewarding for sure for me and the home owner. Using mosaic tiles is a great way to do accent borders in many ways. I had one job I used one that had some glass 1 inch square pieces that I actually used on the by 12 tiles and I clipped the corners periodically when I did a job floor to ceiling. Then I continued the decorative mosaic border around the mirror that was recessed in the tile as well. It was a very rewarding job at the end and very well loved by the customer and friend of mine. I love using both styles of wet saws depending on the jobs. Putting the board across at the beginning and the same as your border section is always a plus. Fantastic job Josh, and wonderful choice of colors.
My wife picked out the colors. I was just the installer 😃. I’ll let you know you liked the colors. Sounds like a beautiful project you did! It’s very satisfying to look at a tile job when you are finished. Like always, thanks for watching and commenting David!
I plan on tiling my shower this month. Your video has given me some great things to watch out for. the correct appoach to tiling the shower
Super detailed video that covers most everything needed to get the job done.
Thanks Sandy. I know the more details the better. I appreciate you watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer : Just about to start a project and the part about layout I’m finding particularly helpful. If aluminum edges were used instead of bullnose tiles, do those get installed at layout time, or slid in place while thinset is still wet? Also, how do you finish the bottom tile where it joins the shower pan? Grout or silicone caulking?
It’s been a while since you posted this, but if you’re still curious about anyone who is doing a diy tile shower….well I’m doin it, bro. I’m doin it!
First time though so it’s slow going and confidence ran out after I was told “demo” is not a legit interior design and I have to replace everything and can’t keep the toilet in the dining room.
It’ll be a bit before I get to the tiling though. I’m just finishing up new insulation and electrical.
Your videos are a huge help! I appreciate you!
This is a great video!! Great details and I learned so much helpful tile information!!
Thanks for the video. I am starting a project to tile my 60x32 shower. This video will help. One suggestion is to dry fit the tiles before applying the thin set. And am glad to mentioned scraping off the thin set above the first row.
I haven't finished watching when I wrote this but a tip is to keep a lot of extra tiles in case you need to replace them down the road because you probably won't find the same one again
Thank you so much for your video. I just did my first every tile floor in the bathroom, tomorrow I am going to attempt a mosaic shower floor and next week the shower walls. Should be fun 🙂
I started gutting the master bath and I'm strongly considering pulling the old fiberglass shower and laying some tile! Thank you for the detailed and informative video! Liked and subscribed!
Very clear and concise, well done
This is the best video on shower build so far!. great job.
Great teacher, thanks for explaining things every step of the way!!
Hold a trowel at an angle and remove some of the mortar from the tile edge before sticking.
Use a toothbrush to clean all mortar squeeze along the way.
One of the best step by step tutorials that I have seen! Detailed without being boring. I will be doing a full shower like this next week. 12 x 12 staggered with an accent strip. No bullnose- Schluter strips instead.
Can you show a picture of the results?
How did it go? We are doing ours this coming weekend. Same strips. I hate bullnose when I have to clean. Did you find this video really helpful?
@@elpelone I would, but I don't think you can on here, I have never seen it done before. Sorry.
@@wendyduncan9084 Spectacular! I had to get this bathroom remodeled for my customer by May 5 for their daughters wedding and I finished it up on April 30. Everyone happy and everyone LOVED IT! The Schluter strips are such a fantastic look over bullnose + my customers tile was not made with bullnose available.
@@MRLAK-sb3mo thank you so much for responding. I’m going to put the time in to really watch this one before I tile this weekend.
yes, this was a great video tutorial, thanks so much! i'm converting my master bath from tub and shower stall to a full walk in shower! excited!
Thank you for this video. I really like watching it. I have done 2 bathroom floors but not shower wall yet. For the bathroom floor I used the Schluter Ditra membrane which was very easy to work with. I am now planning on doing a 60x30 shower wall above a tub which is why I am watching your video. Not sure what wall board am going to use yet.
I remolded not only my 1st foreclosure house, but I also worked for 5 years for a remodeling company here in S. FL. Some great tips here, and it's a great video. Many DIYs don't realize you need that level piece of wood to make sure there are not obvious slanted lines and also support to the tile on walls till the thin set starts to take hold. Unless it's a new build, many showers have bowed and non-plumbed walls. You walk in a shower and eyes are always drawn to eye level and above. Rarely to a compensation cut at the bottom. Also back buttering is essential. Again, great video!
I'm in the comments to try to understand the wood pieces, is that really necessary? Can't I just start at the bottom?
I haven't done DIY at all on bathrooms and watching to learn. I have an old one and want to demo it and DIY it!
I am redoing my bathroom shower after finding a large crack in the tub. I am Definitely saving this video and using it as my guide. Most videos don't explain much but this one makes me feel like I got this. I am more excited than scared to get this done now.
Very informative. I've been going through each of the videos in this series and it sounds like it really can be done over a few weekends. The only struggle I have is with the permitting process in my area. Any change in plumbing needs to be done by a master plumber. My scenario also needs an outlet to be moved.... After that, it feels like it'd be easier to just hire the whole project out.
Thank you very much! The making of a tile shelf was especially helpful.
Well done. Doing this step in two days. Kerdi wrap and sloped floor pan are installed need to add sill yet and corner kerdi wrap today. Thanks for a fantastic video
I am planning to tile my shower and possibly the bathroom floor.
Lots of info here. The last video i used for info used silicone for the backerboard joints. No tape and mortar at all.
Glad it was helpful!
This guy…wow! I’m about to do a shower and he is incredible! I have the same tools he has, but I can’t keep anything as clean as he does. Great video!
Tiling the tub / shower today. I needed to understand how to measure and this video helped a great deal. I plan to extend the tile a little bit beyond the shower, so when I measure the spigot wall, my center line will align with the center of the spigots. Great job! Thanks.
You are welcome Donna! I know if you have not done tiling before it can seem daunting. With a little guidance most people can do the job themselves. Good luck with your project!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. I Learned so much.
You are welcome, Ethan! Good luck with your tile project!
I'm doing one now getting ready to tackle it that's why I'm watching these videos hopefully I can learn
You have great videos. I learn so much watching you building this house. I have tiled 3 showers so far and have 4th one for my daughter in about 3 weeks. The shelves idea is what I am going to use. I don’t remember the difference between red guard and aqua brand water proofing.
Keep up the good work as I look forward to seeing what you have going on.
I do plumbing but never I have never done the tile cosmetic type work, but I think I’m gonna give it a shot after watching this
Excellent training video!
