I watched your video to see if I need to caulk the expansion joints first or grout first then caulk. You dint leave expansion joint between the walls though
Thanks so much for this !! I’m about to do my first grout job !!! 😊
Lollipop sticks of
The excellent Pro. More like.. Beautiful job.. very neat work.. explained to every detail. Thank you Sir
Just a tip, for all the DIYers watching this , depending on heat and humidity and tile type 30 mins may be a very excessive time to wait, all these things play a major factor in how easy it’s to clean off, also a circular motion is a very good way to clean off the grout on the first wash, even pressure what will help loosen the dry grout on the tile,
As a carpenter and handyman myself this dude is the man. Very thorough and straight to the point. Good work man
I highly recommend Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA grout. It's sold at Lowes and Floor & Decor. It's offered in many more colors than the Polyblend brand sold at HomeDepot. It's a bit more expensive than standard sanded/non-sanded grout, but totally worth it. It takes the place of both sanded and non-sanded grout. The perfect solution when you have a combination of matte and gloss tiles. It offers more joint size flexibility, from 1/16" to 3/4". It doesn't use Portland cement, so it eliminates efflorescence. It also doesn't require sealing, which is a major bonus.
This is the first time I’ve done any tile work. This. Idea helped so much! Thank you for being so thorough!!
Great videos, very informative and to the point. I have tiled showers before (DIY) but its been a few years. I found your videos and watched 4 of them to refresh my memory and now I am ready to go again! Thanks!
Love the video. You are amazing at explaining things, very clear and concise, leaving no details out. Thanks so much for all your help.
Hi, Thank you 😊 getting ready grout our shower! Love that silver grout with the black tile!!!
Awesome job and thanks for doing these videos must of helped a lot of people out and that shower looks great. 👍🏽
I find your instructions and voice soothing..it sounds like a sports caster talking about a game.
Excellent process. Easy to follow your process. Thanks
Lovely illustration…thank you
That tile job looks beautiful
Fantastically thorough! You are a born teacher! You are a rarity in this day and age. Just a few thoughts. I think that in a few years or less, of showering in that space that you will become quite bored of the border and those shelves. They both become outdated quickly. The best bet would be to forgo the mosaic tile ribbon no matter how wonderful you think it is when you're in the tile aisle at the big box stores. Also, for timeless shelving for your shampoos, etc., always go with the sunken boxes inbetween the studs, for these things. You'll never regret it. Our upstairs (frat house) bathroom needs a desperate makeover. I'm 65, and will do the whole thing with tile myself because one cannot get these now-a-days-so-called contractors to commit to one's project after they've come over and given the estimate.
Your videos are very helpful, thank you.
Well done; another great lesson. Much appreciated sir.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Not sure I’ll take this on but now I can assist the guy I hire.
My brother and I have done many showers and our techniques are very similar to yours.
We will visit your Amazon store.
Thanks for sharing......
Another tip when using silicone use a squirt bottle with 50% rubbing alcohol 50% water mixture and spray on the silicone bead before wiping. It makes it so much easier to clean and smooth out.
Thanks Josh, super helpful.
You are an Awesome Teacher! Thank You!!! I am glad that I found you!
I appreciate that Sophia. I’m glad you found my channel too. Thanks for watching!
Your videos have been very helpful; I’m grouting today and just finished putting Trex decking on my deck (using your video )
Thanks a lot!
Thanks !!! Really good!!
Great video. Really clear and precise instructions. For the corner shelves , have you tried making the top part of the shelf sandwich, slightly longer (thickness of the tile) so that you can install the front edge without seeing the unfinished edge of the tile at the surface of the shelf? Hiding the seam, basically. I am a stone fabricator and this is how we usually install those pieces? Either way, shower looks great. We don't install tile format sizes, only countertop slab dimensions. Materials like Dekton, Neolith, Level etc... So , I am personally interested in how other people install tile sized formatted porcelain in showers. I will definitely watch some more of your videos.
Perfectly taught
This helped a lot!
Josh, when doing 90 degree corners and where the tile & shower pan meet, you should always use 100% silicone caulk, those joints will always crack if done in grout. Most Grout manufacturers have matching color silicone caulk for this purpose. On a side note, you can use a spray bottle with either soapy water or denatured alcohol to clean up your silicone caulk joints.
Hi thanks for the info. I was wondering how the grout on my ceramic wall and plastic shower pan would ever hold. I'll go with your advice and use caulk
@@jeamarcr85 good luck , I'm sure it'll turn out great!
Nope
I think flexible grout doesn't crack..
Flex adhesive and grout are excellent to use. Sorry I maybe wrong. Sorry..
Yes, never grout corners or between tub.
I really appreciate you work. Thank you so much, it has given me a great understanding of grout and technique
You are welcome! The grouting process is not too complicated, with a little direction most people can easily do it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Great Work!
Thanks Alex. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
thank you
great video. Good job
i enjoyed all the videos relating to this bathroom project in the video. :)
Good job 👍
Hah! Looks like same color and size tile I used for our wood stove base in the living room. We used silver grout, made it pop. I was worried before the grout that the large black tiles just looked blah, but the grout really enhanced it. Your shower with the accent line tile and grout did pop pretty nice as well
Great idea using that as a base for a stove. Silver grout is what this color was too but it looked more white. Appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching!
Mannn you are a school bro, God bless you, I learned a lot,
Great job 😮😮😮😮😮❤
Very good job, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Noah! I appreciate your comment 💪🏻
I love doing tile. I found a great time for grout. put your grout into a pastry bag with a small tip (just like the one used for cake decoration). this tip keeps the project clean and less haze to clean up from the tiles. the most important tips is to load the joint full, don't skimp on filling the joint.
I did it on my backslash and it worked great!! well if it sounds stupid but works well, then it isn't stupid. try it out.
That’s a good idea. When I do stone veneer that is how I grout it. I wouldn’t mind trying a small project and see how it goes with that. It actually makes perfect sense. I made a video doing the stone veneer grout application. Thanks for your comment!
I am doing my first grout today. I was thinking why is there not a gun style system to fill the gaps instead of just smearing it all over with tons of haze after. I wont be able to try something like this out because I am not the boss of this project but I am glad to see someone was thinking like I was.
@@rogerlane2282 from my experience it works well. The only tip I can give is to use premixed grout. And fill the piping bag as you go. You get consistent color with premixed gout. And only filling the piping bag as you need it keeps the grout from getting to hard to pipe the grout into the space between the tiles. I did this and it works great and so much cleaner.
I get it. But grouting 5000 sq ft with a grout bag would be hell
Excellent point. Gonna definitely try that next time. I was thinking about fillable silicone tubes.. Great idea Sir. Thank you..
Great stuff brother. Thanks!! 🤙❤️
Thank you Todd! I appreciate you stopping by!
Great video, great job & tips!
Thank you so much Dan!
Like all of your work, very informative.
Thank you William!
Thank you sir. Very well explained.
You’re welcome. I appreciate that!
Like the video I'm doing my own shower and wanting to do this exact job. Never done tile in my life or shower pan so far got the mortar shower pan in Hardie back need to waterproof then start the tile. Thanks for the videos!!!
Still working on it? I started a little less than 2 weeks ago and am just now finishing the center wall! Putting tile on the floor and having to slope it took extra time but I’m really wishing i would’ve just hired somebody lol
Good Job, I like the colors
I appreciate that crypto Creek. I owe it all to my wife lol she picks out the colors. I just do the labor.
Knows what he's doing ! Thank you for the video ,.... We're About to grout !
You are welcome Shane. Good luck on your project!
Awesome video. Try white vinegar and a fine grit sand block for thinset on the tile face. Comes off like nothing.
Shower looks great!
Thanks Larry! I made a whole video series step-by-step on how to build it. Check it out!
@@TheExcellentLaborer yep! I’ve been following. Is that a slate tile from Home Depot? It looks like what I used on my bathroom floor, but I like what you did with the shower and the mosaic area to break it up.
Hey so just want to give a tip I currently work in the tile business and what we use is a tool called a grout stripper and it works excellent to get the extra thinset out also microfibers would help extremely well to get the haze and excess off a lot better. Just thought I help with a little tip 🤝🏽
Topps tile sell that. Excellent point you have made Sir. Very good tip. Thanks..
Please , where could I find this grout stripper? Thanks
Dude your awesome!
I appreciate that! Good luck with your project!
Great look Josh. It is always the way to go on large tile layouts and of course if it smaller, you do cover all the surface of course. I've also used an epoxy base grout which you do have to do a wipe down as you go but it's still the same process. I always have two - three buckets of water when grouting and the warm to hot water which helps the haze to clean up easier. My final wipe down is with a terry cloth material which absorbes more of the residue.
I know everyone has certain tricks of the trade, but the important thing is not to rush this stage and follow the guidelines of your grout manufacturer. The caulking of the bottom is so important and nice if the grout company offers a matching sanded or non sanded sealant.
Wonderful look with the shower Josh and to your wife. 👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent advice David! I love hearing how everybody does their project. Everyone learns! I do not do tile for a living so somebody who does it every day I’m sure does it much different than someone like me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TheExcellentLaborer doing so much myself in the remodeling aspect of things is always a wonderful thing. From a start to finish of a kitchen, bath or basement project, everything has a situation that requires a different of doing something. Just like you doing new construction from start to finish. Of course remodeling, you come across things unseen. But patience is the key and the ability to do things right the first time. Have a great weekend Josh.
Thanks for the help! I'm surprised you didn't use Schluter edging...
Awesome video man. I'm with you when it comes to applying grout only over the joints and not over the entire tile. Is there an intelligent answer as to why we're taught to spread grout over the entire surface? Do they get a kick back on our purchase of grout? They must have their own personal cleaner upper.
Outstanding work with a great attitude may God continue to bless you. Bottom line
Thank you Patrick! God is good! Same to you!
You da man! Would be great has a hopeful new home builder if you could do a video on reading blueprints for framing. Thank you!
Thanks Josh! I will be building a house from the ground up again so I will definitely do that. Stay tuned!
great viideo. do you have a video for shower pan that will use tile? looking for the best way to slope it. thanks
Really nice video. Question about the shelves, since there is not alot of surface with thinset holding the shelf in place, have you ever had a problem with a shelf breakage / failure? I know the tile above the shelf does provide some additional support as well but just can't have a failure.
Josh, what did you do at the ceiling? Did you just leave it alone, grout or silicone? Thank you so much for such a detailed video, very very helpful!
Muy buen video 👍, así es como se debe trabajar. Cuanto se cobra por pie cuadrado. sorry for my English.
Little soapy water in a cup helps smooth chalk also
Don’t grout corners or change of plane-it cracks every time. There is specialized color-match caulk for corners.
I’m about to grout my shower. My question is: can I use sanded grout on the entire thing considering I did 1/16 between each tile and 1/2” between each row? They’re standard subway tiles stacked vertically. Thank you! Using this video all day
My first grouting tomorrow. On a side note I did use mortar under pan and it was fine I thought but during tiling process I have noticed an irritating creak in one quadrant.
Is the “anything” that can be done. I suspect not.
I tiled the celling
Helpful advice. I have porcelain tile in my shower to grout. What brand would you recommend, and should I go in sanded apoxy thanks.
There is a grout line tool that may work better cleaning thin set and shims from grout lines than a razor blade ?
Hi, do you seal the grout? I bought tile, stone, and grout sealer from Miracle Sealants. Thank you.
You need to use way more clean water and change it out more, the proper way to wash is to do one clean side like you said but then flip pull and wash and repeat you should go through about four five gallon buckets filled halfway to do each wash. When you're done with the second wash and the fine-tuning take a towel and buff it, you won't have to come back the next day to do a third wash. And if your second wash is really good there will be barely anything even with a black tile. And you should also use more of a volume of grout on the wall when you're grouting the volume of grout helps push grout into the voids where you can't see
Excellent video Sir.. Thank you for explaining every detail. Iv done hundreds of tiling jobs for the last 15 years. I do full house refurbs and not just tiling. But I really enjoy tiling. And loved watching every minute of your video. Thank you for explaining everything to detail..But iv learnt alot from you Sir. You explain it in easy way to understand. The shelving part iv never done before using tiles iv done using glass shelves that come made. I love the way you have done it using tiles. A beautifull job. Thank you for explaining every thing to detail.
Iv subscribed. I'd love to see more of your jobs. I have a shower room to tile in my own house soon. Definitely gonna do the shelves. It's been 7 years since iv stopped tiling. As I'm Gas safe registered engineer now. So more of heating and gas appliance installs now. But I sure love your work. Very neat job. Thank you Sir, for uploading your video. Iv always really enjoyed tiling jobs.. just a complete transformation in a few days. Beautiful job..Thank you Sir.. your a pro without a doubt.. Thanks a lot Sir..
How do you remove thin set with porcelain tile where you can’t use the scraper like you did or it will chip the porcelain vernier off the stone tile.
Try some cheesecloth the next day to remove the haze! while its dry the cheesecloth will buff it all off. Comes off likes a powdered dust. Seems to work much better for me than trying to wipe and wipe and wipe
Awesome job.Dig your videos! I actually though of an idea not to get excessive grout on the tiles. Cut brown pieces of paper ( template) slighty smaller than the tile and stick them on each tile with tape all the way around...Hope that sounds right🤔🙂
Many times have seen recommendation to use silicone instead of a simple grout in corner joints. But you didn`t use it. Is there any advantages for that, please? Some people uses a soapy water to prevent silicone against sticking around grout perimeter. Is this a good practice or finger is the best solution? :)
what are those openings around 9:21 on the shower pan and tile at the bottom 9:21 ? are those supposed to be like that?
how much money you get from one m2? just curious. im thinking moving another country to tile. i can make 30-40 m2 wall or floor tiling in one day.
What tile and accent did you use? Also what city are you in?
good tutorial. I'll be grouting my shower as soon as the mastic on the tiles dries.
Thank you! Grouting usually goes pretty quick. Good luck with your project!
@@TheExcellentLaborer Thanks. It was a hell of a road to get to the point of grouting. I had to rip out an old plastic surround mounted on drywall. Everything was moldy down to the studs and insulation. Its nice to see a project that's been months in the making finally coming within sight of completion.
most of your technic is decent ..but you could be a lot cleaner around the shower pan...try masking the pan until you finish the sealing around the pan edge..
Hi, by mistake I used mapei sanded grout superior premium on part of my walls and floor, instead of mortar, what do you think could happen, I wanted to remove the tiles but they are very hard, do you think I should remove them or leave them that way
Maybe too late but listen.. Your floor and Walls WILL FAIL if you ended up setting your tile with grout instead of thin-set mortar. It Will Absolutely absorb water that will quickly result in Extensive Water Damage and likely cause you to have to replace everything and start over. If you haven't already.. remove the tiles and replace them with new tiles set with thin-set mortar or other appropriate tile setting adhesive, at VERY LEAST DO the FLOOR TILES. Do it, it sucks but it'll be much more work and MUCH more money if you don't.
- Guy tryin' ta warn ya.
I was always told to never grout inside corners (caulk them) or they will crack.
You are right bro that’s what I do too
I always start with water in bucket first
And always start at top of shower
One suggestion, invest in a “cox” black gun. It’s much smoother than that stamped POJ.
I have one, completely wore out, from 25 years of gunning automotive urethane for windshields. On a varathaned oak plaque. Ha ha ha.
The one on the plaque was made in England. The new ones….Chinesium.
Use the razor blade with water to prevent scratches
What happens if there is an inch between the shower tile and the tub? Ive tried caulking multiple times but the gap is so big it still leaks.
Can you tile right over concrete or do you have to put down a membrane
Hey Vincent! Make sure the concrete is clean and fairly level before placing the tile over top of it. Other than that you are good to go!
@@TheExcellentLaborer ty for your information I like watching your stuff you explain yourself very well ty
Great video!
You didn't put the end card in lol
I was waiting
I just checked and I should play the end screen card. Try again please!
Yep, end card showed up this time!
Thanks =)
What about the notch on each side of the front of the shower base?
Do you caulk it shut?
i was wondering the same lol
5:00 😂😂 His grout technique to not smear the tile. Cut a few minutes later, tile all smeared. Clean your grout as you go folks. Maybe 4 square feet at a time. Don’t let that haze set. He has great technique on just about the whole process EXCEPT grouting.
If you were a bit more cleaner and instead of using a rag to clean when installing tile use a sponge that way you don’t spend so much time cleaning next day for grout
I see you dressed to match the shower theme…good job….lol
Yep! Lol
Very Good!... #165 {4-26-2024}
Thanks I appreciate that!
It's like making a bread dough🤔
does anyone have experience using a dremel tool for this, removing excess thinset? comments?
Nice installation. Painfully slow grouting process though . It would take me 30 minutes from start to finish to grout a simple 3 wall shower. No jambs or niche even simpler . I would recommend a raimondi grout system wash bucket . If you were using the new grout products. Let’s say a Mapei FA or even urethane. You’ve got to be quick with it or you’ll lose it and be scrubbing your $&! Off. Just drag the float across the tile man. No need in the pitter patter with the float. Also circular sponging if fine doesn’t matter . It’s all out uniforming the joint and tooling it with the sponge .
shower pan
Never and I mean never mix your grout with fast mixer. Mix it slowly aka by hand. If you do that it will harden up fast.
why not just caulk the top edge
Do not do this with an epoxy grout. That haze will go nowhere.
Please don't use your finger on sealant. That's where the mould comes from in the first place.
