One thing i didnt see mentioned during the video (unless i missed it) is the arrows on the back. I found out the hard way that its a very important process to follow if you want your tiles to be leveled at each intersection. A friend of mine explained me that it is due to the press process when the times are created. Sometimes, they can be a little concave. I started without following the arrows and noticed that almost all the intersection had about a 1mm difference between times. In the middle of the installation, i decided to follow the instruction, and surprise. Everything went a lot smoother

Quick tip: You should always trowel parallel with the shortest side of the tile. Not like you’re doing here. Makes it easier for the air to escape.

Overall a great video. The floor looks lovely. I've only done a few of these jobs now but one thing ive learned is that youre supposed to move the tile to fully collapse the ridges. By doing so, you won't have any voids underneath the tile which leaves it susceptible to breaking easily or coming loose in the event of subfloor movement from settling.

O yeah the grout line cleaning sucked big time. But that foam pad is real comfortable.

After clearing and cleaning the surface for laying of tiles. Which comes next? First you cover the surface with the moisture barrier? Or first you start applying the mortar to the surface?

Our subfloor was made of gib creat And was very crumbly so to seal it we did a moisture barrier first. Then to strengthen and level the floor we installed metal mesh let it dry overnight and then installed the mortar and tile over the top. I hope this answers your question. Nice job! The only thing I would suggest is using Shluter Ditra instead of the lathe method. I find the Ditra easier to use because as soon as you lay the Ditra you can start tiling. No waiting till the mortar bed dries. Also, the grid pattern on the Ditra is helpful with aligning. I was about to comment about not back buttering the tiles (I have seem many pros not do this) but I waited and you did.

You can't level a floor with uncoupling mat.
He's using lathe with a slu like you're supposed to.
He mixed it a bit dry but he already found that out while he was working it lol.

Another thing I've found about tiling is that the lighter colored grout looks nice, but will require more maintenance in the future. Nice job, it looks good.

Thanks for the video. No expert here, but I have done a few rooms over the years.
Clever idea of using the laser for guidance ! Hadn't thought of that. I thought of snapping lines, too but realize they are useless as soon as mortar is applied. I also wish I had thought of a jig for the tile cutter. The fence on the table saw seems to jam frequently, or force the saw to stall often.

I would suggest running your trowels marks opposite of what u did because then when u slide the tile left to right or vice versa it’s easier to collapse your ridges and let any air out

Great video 👍👍👍 What prep, and with what to prep concrete basement floor under ceramic tile ?
1. Clean the floor thoroughly. Sweep and vacuum the entire surface to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. This will help the materials adhere properly.
2. Repair any cracks or damaged areas. Use a concrete patching compound to fill in pits, cracks, or uneven surfaces on the floor. Allow it to fully cure per the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Etch or grind the surface if it is very smooth and densely troweled. This roughens up the surface so the materials can mechanically bond. An acid etcher or concrete grinder can be rented for this.
4. Apply a concrete primer. This is typically an acrylic-based primer that seals the surface and enhances adhesion. Roll or brush it on following the product instructions.
5. Install a cement backer board or uncoupling membrane over the prepared concrete. These go between the tile and concrete to prevent cracks from transferring up. Secure with thinset mortar.
6. Lay the ceramic tile using thinset mortar designed for your type of tile (follow product instructions). Work in small sections.
The key is thoroughly cleaning/etching the concrete first and using the proper primers/underlayments designed for tiling over concrete basement floors. This prevents moisture issues and cracking. Check out the floor leveling video on the channel:

Excellent tutorial video. How long do we have to wait after laying the tiles until we move in our Washer and Dryer. These are the tiles that we are going to use after our installer installed the vinyl sheet in 20 minutes without cleaning the old glue and debris. He moved in our Washer /Dryer right away. 1 hour later there were humps and depressions. Another guy will install the tiles.
Thank you very much for your kind words. Yeah that was a bad move on his part to move the machines in. To answer your question it will depend on the mortar used. The bag will have the curing time on it. But a good rule of thumb is 24 to 48 hours because you want to let the tile and the grout to set. Grout will have its own curing schedule. For a laundry room with heavy machines that vibrate longer is better. Good luck on your project let me know how it turns out.
PS your doing the right thing by educating your self on the process of tilling to have the knowledge necessary to know if your contractor is doing the right things. You want to look for some one with OCD for laying tile lol. Most folks out there just do the minimum to collect payment. I have a buddy of mine just had someone retile his bathroom and when I went in there I could not find a straight tile anywhere and the gaps were all different sizes basically a mess. And all because he did not know what to look for to be sure he picked the right person for the job. Honestly even thought I don’t do this professionally for a living I wish he would have called me to help him out.
Some good tips here. I'd suggest not putting grout along the wall seams that can/could be covered with baseboard, as the walls may move a bit with seasonal changes in weather. You could go with a color matched silicon if need be. It remains flexible and allows that slight movement. It is also good to silicon the door threshold joint to reduce the possibility of cracking, especially with a transition to wood or laminate flooring... it is a high traffic area and may also move a bit.

Yes we did do a barrier. We had an awful time leveling the floor so I put our struggles in a separate video czcams.com/video/wLq-1v9thtU/video.htmlsi=ICP9LlqNyyRi7MBt you do need a barrier if you have concrete because it will pull the moisture out of the tile mortar and crack it and that will crack your tile. I would not do the method we used it was a mess.
under no circumstances do not collapse the ridges? isn't that the whole point so you have good coverage?
HeYYou Awesome CZcams handle, you are absolutely correct that the tile should collapse the ridges when placed on top of the mottled bed for good adhesion. The point I was trying to make was to place the tile on top and not try to slide it in from the side as it will collapse the ridges unevenly and make a mess between tiles. Don't keep re wiping the grout. Let it haze and wipe it clean the next day. This is especially important if you are using a darker grout like black or charcoal. If you wipe it too much, the excess water will turn the grout white. The best method is wipe a 12 inch swipe with your sponge, flip it over, wipe another 12 inch swipe then rinse the sponge and repeat.

Solid tip. I learned this the hard way having never done colored grout before. LOL. I am likely going to try out Grout Renew to color over the blotchy grout now. It isn't horrible but I'd rather have a clean uniform look.

Sure happy to help. The kitchen size is 9x11 ft. The kitchen cabinets cost around $2700 the granite was $900, the floor tile was $600 back splash was $450. We did all the work our selfs. It took one evening to put all the cabinets together maybe 4 hours and the install took us a few days after work for the two of us. But I suspect that it can be done in one in half days. The ikea system is very straight forward and once you get the rails on the wall it’s just hanging cabinets and attaching doors. I hope I covered all your questions. how much deviation can a concrete subfloor have, before you have to grind it down or level it?
The acceptable deviation in a concrete subfloor typically depends on the flooring material being installed. However, for more sensitive materials like tile or stone, the tolerance may be tighter, often around 1/8 inch over the same span. If the deviation exceeds these thresholds, grinding or leveling may be necessary to ensure proper installation and prevent issues such as unevenness or premature wear of the flooring.

In general you are supposed to move the tile to get the ridges to form a uniform coverage on the bottom and remove all air pockets. Or at least that's what the NTCA recommends...

@4:49 "Under no circumstances slide the tiles into place as this will collapse the ridges". From every pro I've watched on YT, you WANT and NEED the ridges to collapse. That's the only way to get the recommended 90% adhesion. As has been showed in many videos, simply back buttering does not equal adhesion. You can easily test this by pulling up various tiles after you put them down to confirm how much of the tile was actually properly adhered to the mortar. I'm no Pro so perhaps a professional could chime in on the topic. Because I think you gave advice that is the exact opposite of what should be done.

The point I was trying to make was to make sure your putting the tile down one after another so they touching the spacer and not half inch apart and then slide the tile in as it will collapse the ridges prematurely and make a mess of the grout lines. We have a video on what not to do lol. If you want to watch that in the description. We had the hardest time getting out kitchen floor level and don’t have a great way to share at this time.
Does the off set depends on the size of the room or it dosent matter
In our case it did not matter because one corner of the room would be covered by cabinet so we only had to make sure the left side of the room looked good. We went with this layout to minimize the amount of cuts we had to do. But it should be a consideration when laying tile to make sure you don’t end up with strange slivers in visible places. is it possible to do small sections at a time, and come back later?
Yes we did ours over two days. You want to make sure you did a good job cleaning the edges and if your using spacers you want to set them before your done for the day.
For rectangular tiles, you're supposed to lay the mortar in the opposite direction, then press the tile sideways to garanty minimum 80% contact. The application in this video is very likely to fail after a couple impact on the tiles
Thank you for reaching out and expressing your concern for my project. Honestly I hope that is not the case. But only time will tell. I did not show this in the video but every few rows I checked the tile coverage by pealing up a few tiles to make sure I was getting good coverage. Any tile I pealed up was more than 95% covered to my untrained eye. I also made the mortar nice and thin for better coverage. @@DIYwithMAX @steve0570 is correct. You need to imbed the tile, not just lay it on top. And using a good leveling system, you can walk across the tiles to further ensure they are imbedded. You can watch Schluter videos or videos on the level systems to confirm.
This is specially important when laying tiles above 15 inches, as you'll want to make sure there's no air pockets left after pressing on the tiles; the smaller the trenches for the air to escape, the better. It might work by following the long side, but its just less efficient. It might still have bonded properly since the tiles were not big ones

@@steve0570 I agree the ridges should be side to side. There's enough good info in here to ignore this detail. I think the wedge system works better when ridges are side to side.
Cleaning the joints are so important, I did not clean the joints and spent unnecessary time removing mortar. I seen a guy on here use a toothbrush for that and another pro tip I heard and seen was to wipe the edges of the joints with your finger before laying the next tile.

That answer you would find on the bag of mortar you are using by good rule of thumb is to lay the tiles set overnight so they don’t shift on you if the mortar is not dry underneath.

This is a perfect example of wht not to do. Also, never start from the corner of the room, start from the middle and work your way out. Many walls are crooked and you'll end up laying your tile crooked. Also, just because you use clips doesn't mean your tiles are flat. Use a level!
Why would you make that claim if this tile turned out great. We started from a straight line on the ground and I do mention in the video to NOT use any wall as reference. We leveled the subfloor first to make sure we are starting with a level surface to help the clips keep everything nice and level. You must have been skipping around because you missed a lot off stuff in the video that covers every your mentioning lol.
You should use at least one wall as a reference, There's a method to squaring the room. Did you use a 6 or 8 foot level across all the tile to see how level they were? Why did you remove the entire kitchen when all you had to do was remove the kick plates under the cabinets?@@DIYwithMAX
@@DIYwithMAX you need to use a level when laying tiles in rows like you're doing here. The very first tile in the first row needs to be level in both directions before proceeding.
The second tile in the first row will be automatically levelled in one direction by using tile levellers to make the short edge of it flush with the short edge of the first tile.
However, the second tile still needs to be levelled in the other direction (lengthwise).
The third tile in the first row is just like the second tile. It will again be automatically levelled along its short edge but you again need to use a spirit level to check that it's level lengthways.
It's only the tiles that are laid up against two other tiles that form a right-angled corner that don't need to be checked for level with a spirit level.
why are u applying the mortar with the stripes running in the direction of the longest side, air gets out easier if you do it towards the shortest side, no ?
You are 100% correct. This was my first tile job ever so I learned that from folks in the comments after the fact. But I have to honestly say my mud was nice and thin and I was more comfortable pushing the mud around the way I did it. I tried the other way and I have to make more passes for the same tile. Honestly I’m not sure how much different it makes. For example if I was laying 24x24 inch tile instead of 12x24 it would not matter because the sides are the same size right, as long as it’s all in the same direction it should work just fine. Also I did not mention this in the video but probably should have. Because this was my first time I actually pulled up a few tiles every few rows to make sure I was getting good coverage. This renovation is for my in-laws so I wanted to make sure it’s done to the best of my ability lol.

You could have used a smaller grout joint like a 1/8 in.. if the tiles were really really good and square you could go with a 1/16th clip

What laying tiles on the floor has to do with removing cupboards?
It just made it easier to tile. In our situation we knew we were replacing the kitchen anyway so it was easier to remove everything and then tile the whole floor without having to work around new cabinets and potentially damage them somehow. But if you’re doing this project and keeping the cabinets then of course you would not remove them and just tile around them.
Hi how much extra height does the glue under the tile add to the tile ?
That depends on the size of the tile and the mortar(glue) it requires. On the mortar bag there will be information on what size trowel to use and how high the ridges should be for proper installation.
- A 1/2 x 1/2 inch (12x12mm) square notched trowel yields around 1/4 inch (6mm) of thinset thickness.
- A 3/8 x 3/8 inch (9x9mm) square notched trowel yields around 3/16 inch (5mm) of thinset.

So assuming 10mm tile height + 5mm adhesive stuff
@PatrickGuerrisi there are drains with adjustable tops for this purpose this way you have few millimeters to play with and set the hight just right.

Hey thank you for the question. Expansion joints are just small gaps between the tile perimeter and walls or cabinets. You leave this space for tile to have room to expand and contract with temperature changes that’s all. What type of subfloor was being laid? I couldn't make out what was said
Thank you for the question. Welcome to the channel. The subfloor originally is gypcrete but it’s very brittle so we reinforced it with lath and layer off concrete and that is what the tile is being laid on. My dad has used this method before in his condo with the same subfloor and it’s held up really well for the past 13 years. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’ll have the same outcome. none pro's should NOT use quick dry adhesive.... its a lot easier But you have to wait for it to dry .Its worth it

You cannot tile directly on top of a sub floor.. it’s not strong enough and the thin set and grout will crack over time due to the flex of the floor.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. It all depends on the type of subfloor you have, but it is certainly possible if you’re subfloor is flexing.
Great tips but there are a two things you could do better.
1. Lay the lines in the mortar parallel to the short side of the tile. That way it is easier for the air between the ridges to escape.
2. Move the tiles in a side to side motion perpendicular to the mortar lines in order to set them. The goal is to collapse the ridges!
