hey what if a contractor did this as opposed to removing and replacing?
it happened to me. the floors are uneven he put a transition but it's not what i wanted or as promised
Wesley already new some building basics from my Father
What the names of things you put before put the tile ??
Do you have a video on tiling Terracotta tiles over concrete slab? I need to tile my 20X24 feet patio
As I said below...I'm DISABILED, thus don't get out much anymore, nor am I able to drive, alas...I'm too, unable to attend though I'm certain I'll be miserably sad of my unfortunate circumstances & pleasure of meeting you. 😑
This guy’s hypnotic. I was looking for something else entirely before I realized I was twenty-six minutes into this video and I don’t need to tile my shower.
This is my second time watching this video. 😂
Deng i dont realise until read your comment
same here. I was looking for swimming videos and for some reason this caught mu attention ( entirely unrelated to my search) watched till the end, so hyped right now! needed more and started reading comments,
🤣
I agree:)
PEOPLE!!!! PLEASE UNDERSTAND ITS ABOUT $400 IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF. DO NOT CALL AROUND TELLING INSTALLERS YOU SAW THIS VIDEO AND THE JOB SHOULD ONLY COST $400. LOL
I love this channel great tips, thank you!
This video inspired me, a 71 year old novice, to redo my entire bathroom. Jeff is a wealth of information and inspiration. I am so grateful. I watched his other videos on how to install plumbing fixtures, ceiling exhaust fan, radiant heat cables under my pebble floor, and more. The results are beautiful. Wish I knew how to share before and after pictures.

I tiled right over the existing tile of my shower by following Jeff's instructions. It came out great! Just take your time and follow each step exactly. My first shower came out so good that I am now starting the second one!
Hi Kevin, can you please share the before and after pictures
Does it take away from the space you have in the shower
@@justbeinray-DiY Yes, but does a quarter to half inch matter?
Hi,is your tile job in the shower still holding up??
Jeff is the craftsman tiler and handyman virtual father we all needed. lol
Protect Jim at all cost. The tile mafia are probably EXTREMELY pissed at this gem of a video 🤣🤣
😂😂😂
There is no such thing as a tile mafia. There are either professional tile setters, mediocre tile setters and just plain hacks. A smaller percentage are really pro tile setters. I put this guy somewhere in the middle as far as knowledge. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with wanting to save money and doing it this way if you know the drawbacks also, which he doesn't address here. He wasn't honest as to why a professional wouldn't recommend doing it this way, and it isn't the money. As a tile setter myself for 35 years, I wouldn't do this in my home just to save money, unless it was just some secondary bathroom in good shape that doesn't get used as much and even then I might just decide to tear it out and do it the professional way. There are many reasons I wouldn't do it this way that have nothing to do with money.
I have been struggling with the thought of bathroom renovation because the cost is outrageously high if I get someone to do it. This video is a life saver as I’m slowly preparing to DIY without removing the tiles. What a wonderful video, thanks, Jeff! You probably save my marriage too lol
Me and my ex are exes because he wouldn't help me do a bathroom or even let me do a bathroom on my own. You are a wise man
My wife is going out to work tomorrow and I’m ripping my bathroom apart in the morning. Shower pan and tiling ahower
I was a tile contractor for 25 years and I always removed all metal fixtures, soap dishes, and covered the tub with a heavy canvas in case I dropped a tile or something on the tub corner. That way you do not chip the tub finish. I have had great luck with redguard although Mapai products are good too. One last thing. I always spread my thinset level across the shower wall so that I can lay a nice even bed of mortar and I go to wherever 3 or 4 rows of tile will reach. Like if the tile is 11 3/4 inches, I spread 36 inches level across the wall and lay those 3 rows, then do the next 3 rows. I like your videos
Im no contractor but my mom and i learned what we can about this kind of work to do our own home improvements/renovations. We never had the money to hire professionals but used books and videos to our best advantage.
Good job!
Hello,
I am contractor in Arizona, the reason we want to Tearout the old tile and start from scratch. The plumbing fixtures 90% of them won’t fit back on.
Also we are required to warranty all of our work for 2 years. Going over someone else’s work we are liable for anything they may have done wrong. That’s why many contractors don’t want to tile over tile.
Plus we are registered contractors, so we have to follow building codes. Set by the state to protect homeowners.
Thank you for the explanation!!
This makes total common sense to me.
YEah but your labor is expensive so we will do our own work thank you very much
how does this guy rate in the eyes of a professional. Good, bad or ugly?
@@ceez3841 That's fine. Just realize that he is not being honest about the drawbacks that could go wrong, doing it this way. He is more concerned about promoting his DIY channel, I think. As a tile setter of almost 40 years, I wouldn't do it this way in my own home, either. Money has nothing to do with why we tear it out and do it all over again, like he dishonestly claims in this video.
@@kurtmcl I'm a tile setter of almost 40 years myself. He is mediocre in my opinion. Doesn't mean this won't work fine in some cases. If you do it this way, there are many things that could still go wrong, he doesn't mention. Easier and cheaper doesn't mean better. He is doing a good job of promoting his DIY channel and teaching cheap shortcuts. He could be more honest bout it. I get wanting to do things cheap and easy, and it's not always going to have terrible results, but there are good reasons why professionals do things the way they do that have nothing to do with just taking people's money away from them.
Wow. I just got a quote from a company that does acrylic showers. The list of what they could not do was longer than what they could do. Bottom line he quoted me - with a straight face - $20k for basically three pieces of acrylic. A bottom piece and two sides (the other two sides are glass). Of course ripping out the existing tile is part of their approach.
Needless to say Jeff has absolutely inspired me to go over the existing tile. Don’t think I have any mold issues but what the heck go ahead and do the water membrane for good measure.
Thanks Jeff!
P.S. I’ll take some before and after photos and post them if possible.
I swear i always wondered why putting tiles over your current tiles wasn’t an option. I am so glad I accidentally ran into this video. I am a first time home owner and purchased a new builded home. Home came with everything standard and i am ready to do some updates together with my husband. I already shared this video with him so we can start planning. Cant wait
Literally was wondering the same thing cus I hate the tile. I don't want to do a big thing in the bathroom when the tub tiles are all I want to change! As a first-time homeowner, I'm excited as heck to find this video. I'm hoping it will work for us!
LOL!!! 😂 me too…I close in two weeks (Dec 2022) just a few days before Christmas and everything (wall and ceiling paint throughout, all cabinet and door hardware, lighting, carpet) has to go - what a shame but my own style will make the house into a comfortable home. I’m looking forward to it and I’m not. 😂 it’s a lot of work.

Hey did you do this? I'm about to do the same. New build but hate the shower wall
Exactly the same for me! I did a Google search, and this came up. Getting ready to get started! Goodbye 1967 aqua tiles!
If you're using a quarter inch by quarter inch trowel you need to back butter your tile. You should never grout your corners or where the tile meets the tub. Always use 100% silicone on all joints and corners. When you're applying thinset on the wall don't go up too high or else it starts to dry. I put maybe two feet worth of thin-set up before tiling. I never grout on the same day. Guys like you keep me really busy. Thanks for all the work. P.S. always silicone in all your plumbing fixtures.
he pulled off the tile to show you the adhesion, so no, backbuttering isnt required if you have the experience this guys does with thinset
@@brekkohThe adhesion is laughable when he pulls it off
My opinion step 1 should be: remove all shower fixtures and tape a drop cloth off into the tub to protect it from spillage and debris.
I wish he was in Trinadad cos my bath room need a make over
He did remove the fixtures but did not record that part. He does mention later that you have to pay attention to the depth of the tile to ensure that you can still turn the handle or fixture after installing another layer of tile.
Prep is 90%
The only things you forget is this man has done this for years, he surely knows what he is capable of and it’s loss of time in minor cleaning..too funny the comments and critiques. End result speaks for itself and his quality videos
@@bertmeza8673 this is better than the remove glaze, blah blah blah. I think he appreciates that most of us are dunderheads when it comes to this kind of stuff. I hope you're having a good memorial day. Peace.. Gail in Central Florida. May 31, 2021.
Awesome video!! I took this project on while my wife was out of town because I know she would say it can't be done this way. Let me tell you, the transformation was amazing and I never cut a piece of tile before this project. In total, I spent around $1,300 for tools, tile, cement and other supplies (e.g., a laser level is a must) and around $2,100 to have a frameless door installed. The door installation was the only part of the project that I didn't feel comfortable doing myself. The shower door guy was blown away that I did it myself and that it was tile over tile. For the walk-in shower floor, I used penny tiles with an epoxy grout (Starlike EVO). I was a bit intimidated to try an epoxy grout because of the quick dry-time, but this product was very forgiving and I had no problems. Thanks so much for posting this video and for anyone out there thinking about trying this, I'd say go for it. Just take your time with the tile measurements and planning the tile placements. Cheers
I did a complete DYI reno on my bathroom. Your videos are straight forward, easy to understand and made the job go smoothly. I used Mapei Aqua Defense to seal the tub area and that product is all it says it is. What I like about your videos is you get straight to getting the job done, you talk along the way which is perfect and usually answers any questions one might think to ask. Thank you for the very informed videos. I would not have been able to do this project without your guidance and assurance that I could do it myself!!!
I just like the fact that you CAN tile over tile !
me too....
You can only do that if your structure is still solid and you don’t have any mold :)) ... so basically if your bathroom was remodeled in the last 5 years but you don’t like the job or design :))
Yeah no problem. I do it a lot. Building bathrooms for a living.
U do have to take some things into account.
Structural the walls need to be stable
Bonding of old tile
Are the walls flat
Size of the new tiles
Who dis-liked this video?! This is golden! I'm in process of buying a house and this may come in handy; I've seen a lot of houses with pink, green. and yellow tile, lol. I never knew this was possible! It would def save a lot of money.
Contractors!
Contractors that actually know why this isn't the best advice to give people. Cheap and easy is fine, but there is a good reason why a contractor wouldn't do it this way, and just taking people's money is not the reason. He isn't being honest about that here. It could work out just fine doing it this way, and then again, there are a number of reasons besides money that it wouldn't be a good idea.
This man is a God of construction! I’m watching all these videos just to have an idea of what I could do for when we finally get a home. This is great!!
You know what I love about this video? He didn't use a wooden baton to start the first row. In the UK they are completely obsessed with that, I love the way he just cut the tile in half, stuck down and got busy. Respect.
Love your video's. Lots of homeowners can't afford to tear out the whole bathroom. I have a long 1960's bathroom tiled on the floor, shower and half way up the walls. The quotes I've gotten to update it completely out of my price range so we've just lived with it. This is a great option.
Hi Beverly, you are exactly the kind of person I was thinking about when I made this video. You represent 80% of homeowners out there. Cheers!
NEVER IN MY LIFE DID I THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE!! Thank you SOOOOOOO.... MUCH! 👍👍👍
Hi Kari, this is not the best plan for long term but will definitely make it possible to have a nice shower for another 10 to 15 years for a good price. Cheers!

Jeff. I don't know if you read these but 2 years ago just before lockdown I discovered your videos. I bought and renovated a house by using all of your tips and ideas. I sold the house 18 months later and made £25000 ($40k??). It is extreamly difficult to find tradesmen in the uk now due to a crazy building boom. You are seriously changing lives and helping people do expensive jobs for a fraction of the cost. Salute to you sir!
Dude you rock. I have a bathroom remodel project and I am going to do likewise. Thank you for the great tip. Why spend thousands when you can get it done with a few hundred dead presidents. Thank you for the great tip. Love it.
I didn't even know this was possible! Saved us thousands of dollars since we are wanting to retile two of our bathrooms before April.
Well, did you?
Jeff, Thank you for the tips. I have a friend that couldn't afford to redo her bathroom, then came along your Remodel Video and followed it down to a T. Obviously the materials is somewhat different but effective here in AU, She is amazed balls over her new inexpensive WOW factor bathroom for $520 aud. The initial cost to strip and retile her bathroom was $3324 aud. Huge savings DIY.
That is great news. I would love to see pics if possible. Cheers!
How much do the tile setters charge per sqft out there ?
Or square meter
40-45 A$ per sqm. We use metric system here
Your videos are so useful! We did our kitchen backsplash after watching several videos. The wall was a vinyl sheet, so I treated it like tile over tile and used Mapei ECO Prim Grip. It worked so well. The job looks great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to we DIYers.
cheers again!
I was going to forgo the retile of my shower but this video gave me the confidence to jump right in. Thank you for such clarity.
Thanks for that. Every quote I got on my bathroom was at least $15-20k !
you know they price you not really for the job but for where you live most of the time. At least where i live in Santa Monica CA
Man its wonderful to see how this channel has grown(was around 15k subs when I originally joined), some people are just really good at explaining things and taking the fear factor out of DIY. Great job Jeff, you make these jobs look easy!!
Thank you Rocket Creations for hanging in there with us! This project However is actually just as easy as it looks. Cheers!
Can I use blue max as membrane. I noticed what you use it flat and when I used blue max on cement before flooring it was a bit glossy
Your video saved me $800. That's how much tile guy wanted to rip out old tile, re-sheetrock and tile. Easy peasy. Brilliant!!!
Great video Jeff. I don't think I'd be done in a day but you seem to have a great helper. I too wish they sold the liquid membrane stuff in quarts but I have resigned myself to the $65 gallon tubs. Aquadefense is what I use for no particular reason
You just saved me a bunch of hours of drywall work. Great stuff, thanks for taking time to make the videos.
Happy to help. Cheers!
Brilliant! Wasn't looking for this but I needed this! Thank you for your candor and well edited format!
I love your videos. You're so thorough and make everything look so easy!
This project I guess you can only do if the tile was done correctly last time.
I had someone do my very small bathroom about 2 1/2 yrs ago. He removed the tile which was all the lower 1/2 of of the room, then tiled only over the tub to the ceiling. Apparently, the walls weren't level and he didn't use spacers. So what should be beautiful subway tile is a hot mess with terrible and inconsistent grout lines and uneven tile. 😭
Yes I have tiled over tile. What I did was grind the surface with a diamond wheel. 25 years later still good. I use high quality tile 13 inch and it was also used as floor tile. Stuff was porcelain and came with 1/4 round and corner pieces. To get the tile to full size I found a beautiful marble insert. All visitor to the project has been 100% it’s beautiful. I am not so good at selection, so went to a showroom and copy the whole showroom look. So people out there, go look at the showroom and if you like then order same tiles. You will be more happy than trying to be a designer which we are mostly not. I have done over 60 bathrooms and kitchen. I rate my finish at a 95% so very little complaints from my previous customers
You gave me hope! 😊
I'm glad I found this video today.
You’re so generous with your knowledge. I always want to try stuff myself but like it done correctly. I’ve spent three days watching your videos. Everyone in the house is getting hungry and having to fend for themselves. Thank you for your knowledge. Great videos.
After 49 years, I just discovered something special. Thanks buddy
I’m so happy that I found YOUR VIDEO! You really take the time to thoroughly explain the process ! Thanks so much for sharing 🤗
Thank you so much for posting this. You've given me hope that I can still get my dream bathroom after all. I live in a condo and under the renovation rules, we're not allowed to strip off the existing tile. I'd just about resigned myself to accepting the existing (ugly) tiles when this showed up in my feed. ♥️
Just did everything you did except it took me 2 weeks 😂
LOL< I totally get it. I am a little quick with the tile. Cheers!
Lol..2 weeks
@@johnsmith-qe2fd I did my research before doing it stupid. I got waterproof backer board added aquadefense waterproof membrane. Installed the tile, grout it, added sealant twice, waited 72 hours for it to fully cure. And finished it off with waterproof mold/mildew resistant silicone in all corners 😏
Thank you sir!
So that means for me is going to take me 1 month 🤣🤣🤣
I like the side tiles much better, the marble look is much prettier!

Really nice video...but I liked the original white tile better. 😲 I did love the tile on the ends though.
Didn’t know he was Canadian until I saw his coffee cup. And I’ve been watching for years!
A n incredible lifesaver for those of us on a budget! And its so true what was said about contractors. I asked about new tile, and next thing I know, all anyone wanted to discuss was 5-10 grand for a total renovation! I have experience tiling my own kitchen so this should be easy-peasy if I adhere to the directions :) Thank you so much!
A contractors pet hate is people pretending to want something but only looking for tips on how to do it. I suspect what the contractors did is, in the trade called ‘Pricing Yourself Out of the Job’, just to get away. Not trying to be mean but you said you had experience and thanked here for the extra info you needed. 2+2=......
Only you know the answer
Did you do it?
The kitchen is different stuff it is a dry area.

This channel is so good. Almost didnt remember to double check the fixture to ensure shower handle can turn after additional tile-on-existing-tiles increased thickness of overall wall
Everytime I have a project, you already have a video!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for these. They are just superb.
Those hexagonal tiles look like something from the set of "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In", but give the customer what she wants. The technique is the same no matter what your tastes. Thanks for posting this.
That is why you need to shop at a huge tile store. There will always be something there you will like!

Wow I have did not know you can do this. Simply because the tile guys call for a tear off. I’m not even sure some of them knew . Thank you.
Thank you for not being selfish and sharing with us all!
I’m a licensed tile contractor in California. We would never do this unless the contractor or home owner wanted to void any warranty because we don’t know the quality of the substrate behind the tile, we don’t know if there is any water damage from possibly a bad waterproofing system. Not worth the risk in my opinion. Mapei also requires you use fabric in the corners of the walls with their paint on membrane. They won’t provide any warranty if the waterproofing fails if you skip this step. You also don’t want to paint the corners super thick. Every waterproofing membrane is very specific with how thick it should be so that the product dries completely and not just the top surface. You want to use 1/4 x 3/8 on any tile over 12x12. These tiles would fall in that category. The tile you pulled in the first shot had maybe 50-% coverage. TCNA requires 95% coverage in a wet area. You can easily tell the coverage when you pull the tile if the trowel marks are still visible then there isn’t enough thinset. I would consider asking a licensed tile guy for his advice before you make a video like this. It looks like it saves a lot of money and time but in reality it could just be a bandaid and lead to further problems. Good luck and stay informed for your viewers.
Good tip Marcus.
Done tile over tile 6 or dozen times, used wall mastic tile pre mixed adhesive, never primed anything, usually in apartment buildings.
We still service many of those buildings, 10 years and the tile still has never popped.
No one is that lucky.
@@matthewd.1474 nice. Well it wouldn’t pass a city inspection in my area. It also clearly states on the instal guide of the mastic that it’s not to be used in a wet area. Just because tiles aren’t falling off the wall doesn’t mean they are secure. I’ve done many demos where I can get the tile off with my hands once I release some of the grout or surrounding tile. I just follow the instructions and stick to my city codes for client protection and my protection. The last thing I want is to have to rebuild something or ruin someone’s house when they are paying me a lot of money to create something that is supposed to last. Good luck to you
Marcus I need help understanding this too. If water got behind the grout and the waterproof system which he showed with the discoloration then won’t the same situation occur again? Is there something that is suppose to seal the grout?
@@HaDealio you can seal the grout. I recommend it. But the grout sealer never lasts. The sealers are slowly broken down over time by cleaning agents. The sealer is supposed to be reapplied every six months to a year in a regularly used shower. So many of my clients that I have done a remodel for have never sealed there shower and the walls behind the tile are fine because the waterproofing was done properly. there are many types of waterproofing systems. If done properly water will never get behind them. The paint on types need to fully cure and need to be applied per the instructions to become a solid system. The fleece membranes that use thinset to go down and seam tape are very secure as well if done properly. Then lastly there is vinyl liner or hot mop and tar paper covered in cement. I learned on this one when I started.
Your voice is so comforting I could listen to you all day but I actually need to learn this stuff so bonus!
Thank you for all the time you take to explain the process and your honesty.
I can't wait to start, but I will take your advice and take my time, be mindful of the detail and enjoy the process. I feel like you're the uncle I wished I had . I will call you uncle anyway. I can't wait to show you the finish.
I been wanting to retire my bathroom for a long time and I didn't want to do the rip out and I'm so glad that I came across your video because the rip out yes contractors will cost you a lot of money for that not to mention it's a pain to do the rip out.... I can honestly say now I look forward to redoing over both bathrooms and retiring the showers in my condo thank you so much for your video and all the help That you provide it on tiling and the information that you provided in your videos
Glad to be of some help. Cheers and best of success!
What a great job, and I really like those tiles. I wish you could renovate my apartment. Keep up the good job.
This gentlemans got a good personable gift for teaching...very engaging!
Awesome video. Wish I knew about this years ago when we first started doing flips! Great content!
Great vid!! I'm gonna do this. Few questions : 1. Near the tub, you didn't show how to finish - grout and silicone? 2. If shower hardware doesn't fit, how to extend out? 3. Glass shower door install video links not in description - pls attach. Thank you a million!!
I DID this for a shower!! (Thank you, sliding door video!) It came out beautifully. And everyone loves it!One suggestion. Add a v/o edit in the video explaining filling in and securing the schluter edging. If you aren't wedging it under the old tile, just butting it up against the cut line like I did. This was tricky and hard to keep laser straight. Holding it in place while the mortar dries is a loooong time! Thanks for all that you do, Jeff!
A stainless roofing nail or 3 will hold it in place but if you install under new tile it shouldn't be moving
I use red guard. Even with the schluter kerdi system, it gives me piece of mind to add that step. One thing about water is that it will find a way to locate even a pinhole. I've not had a shower fail in 12 years of being on my own 🙏. Great videos and information. I appreciate it.
I’ve been binge watching all these episodes as I’m gearing up for some big changes in my home as well. Recognized the bathroom from the Mother’s Day surprise episode. Looking at the issues, rewatching the video, the membrane didn’t go below the tub. I’m going with the same thing due to water damage, should I cover below the tub too or will I experience the same issues because the water is behind the tile? Thanks!
Hello Jeff, you got any tips on a walk in shower. I really enjoy watching your videos by the way. Keep up your awesome work 👏
just cutting the holes in the tiles for the shower handles and spout took me whole day.
Gosh.. I can tell you are an amazing dude. I love you Sir. I don't know if my mom will ever let me do things like this on my own in her home.. but I'll save tons when I have my own home
THANK YOU SIR! I tried to tell my hubby you can tile over tile but now I can SHOW him the proof. 😆🤣😂 Who are we kidding? I’m the handyman in the house anyway. 😆😁
Watched this video probably a dozen times and was our guide when renovating our second bathroom. Our tile over tile shower looks great!! Thank you!
please post pics:-) I think i'm going to do it also!
please post a pic :)
ive watched it 3X.. we bought all the supplies, why am i so nervous! lol maybe i need to watch a couple more times! both the guy at Home Depot and tile store gasped when we said we were tiling over tile. :/
@@ashleys5453 you can do it! People like to gasp bc you’re not “supposed to.” Even out any loose or raised tiles, waterproof, and you’re good to go! Other tip: don’t use 12”x24” tiles; those are probably meant for new installs, are hard to set and very unforgiving. Our 6x6 tiles were super easy to lay and look great.
@@ashleys5453 How did it turn out?
This is such a great tip and detailed showing of the steps. Thank you.
I'm so glad to stumble upon this video....I was watching a video on how to assemble a corner shower organizer which came without paper instructions. Any way, this video is super helpful because we are purchasing a house which requires remodeling, adding living space and finishing existing areas. The only bathroom in the property has pink and light green tile...not ideal. Rather than going with a demo cost and new install which is outside of fixing budget, this is the perfect solution!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge...I don't like to go to FB unless required, but your videos are worth sharing with the whole world.
Thank you great video, so helpful and easy to listen to. Makes perfect sense to tile over existing tiles. Very inspiring
This is the video I'm looking for. I don't like the hassle of having to remove the old tiles, installing new backboard and waterproofing and etc. Great Video. Thank You!!!!
Glad to help. Cheers!
Done 5 years ago tiles still holding old tiles! Good advice for everyone!
Been doing this for 20 years and it works awesome. Cheers!
I agree w the hypnotic comment! I'd love to have a Jeff clone in my life! Home improvement projects are my jam, but in the past I've worked w those that have a different vision of "done correctly" than I do. I live Jeff's practical approach and key tips where mistakes could happen!
