70-year old woman that is a little overweight. I think I can skip the mirrored shower!! 😂 Love your videos....they always make me smile.
😂😂 was thinking the same!
My thought exactly!😂
Not 70 but will definitely be skipping the mirrors as well 👍💯😂
Well it does steam up. I'd draw a 'new me' body on it
My thought too. I was like...now way!
Green bathrooms are beautiful.
My bathroom is white, but my tub/shower area is sage and my vanity, mirror, light bar & little wall cabinet is a darker green. Plus, I got 3 little faux green plants on the cabinet. Looks so relaxing for this tub soaker. 😌
I was wondering what she has against green. Love my soft sage powder room
Deep Forest Green is chic. Panel trim all one colour. Or Deep Navy the same way.
@@connielacey4881 Thank you for this because I already ordered my olive green limewash paint after watching this and it scared me lol..
A mirrored shower stall would scare me!😁
I'm usually amazed by your tips - this time I have to disagree...when I'm sitting on the toilet cutting my toenails or changing my clothes I don't want to admire myself in the mirrors everwhere in my bathroom, I'm not Patrick Bateman!

To add more storage to our small bathroom, we installed a 6ft tall shelf in between the studs. It's about 4" deep - just wide enough to hold lots of bathroom products (ie. shampoo, mouthwash, prescriptions, etc.) We made a 18" wide barn door to cover it. It works really well and looks adorable.
I am so happy that you use the word niche correctly instead of saying nitch
My shower door contractor gave us great advice just last week: there are two types of shower enclosure glass, clear and traditional green-blue (denoted by the color seen along a finished edge of a piece of glass). He said that cool neutral bathrooms look best with clear glass showers and warm natural color bathrooms look best with traditional green glass. I thought that was GREAT advice. And it reminded me that it's always good to ask your contractor what they think - they see it all, every finish & fixture from cheap to cutting edge - and trust me because of that they have MUCH better taste than we do! This applies to plumbers, painters, electricians. Just because they work in a trade does not mean they don't appreciate good design....they most *certainly* do appreciate beauty and they love to share their insights vis-a-vis good design.
The contractors who did my bathroom decided that the light fixture should be above the sink and the vanity should be fitted into the wall and the wall board should be put right over the tile and brackets for the toilet paper holder and towel bars. I noticed light coming through the base of the shower from the basement because they had cut away a good bit of the floor the entire base supported below by a one inch wide aluminum strap. Cracked and had to be replaced. The electric heater is crooked. The mirror isn’t centered over the sink; the only outlet is behind a fixture I told them I was going to use for storage. They replaced the window with clear glass. I swear they must have been high. So many things to notice when held captive. And they weren’t the lowest bid. I know I know….I should have been more forceful. I didn’t want to make a fuss. To be fair the drywall (marine board) is flawless. Obviously their specialty. It’s better than it was. Forgive the rant. Having a Facebook fight with contractors who seem to think it’s okay to work high AND uninsured.
@@marylhere did you ask them for a Certificate of Insurance?
Absolutely! My contractor saved me from my ideas many times with "we havent done that in yeeeearss" If you trust your contractor, trust your contractor.
@@phylliscraine was vetted by EasterSeals and all bids required insurance. I only paid for the materials not the labor to convert a tub into a shower for my son to gain more independence.
@@marylhere the contractor still needed insurance for his labor though, by law every business by statute has to carry workman’s compensation insurance for example. Also I don’t understand what “vetted by Easter Seals and all bids required insurance ” means and why Easter Seals would be involved for a contractor you hired.
Love your style, Lisa! Presentation rocks too. Thanks for reinforcing everything I'm doing right in my upcoming tiny bathroom remodel. Can't wait to see the finished result of taking an 80 year bathroom into the New Year in high style.
Hello Lisa...you lady are a design genius. I can't thank you enough. My small bathroom measures 7x7. You solved 3 issues for me. I will be painting walls and ceiling white. Use 18×18 floor tile and bring that pattern onto walls in tub area. Use mirrored wall in vanity area. Thank you for sharing your pro tips.
Lisa! Thank you. You are heavy on info and light on fluff. I really appreciate being spoken to like an intelligent woman!
You are so welcome!
Lisa I love your energy and excitement when it comes to decorating.. Your inspiration really comes through. I enjoy your videos and always inspired by your idea and design .. Love your enthusiasm,💗
I used large format tile in my small bathroom tub/shower. One thing we ALL learned: your walls must be level lol. We had to fix quite a bit to support the weight to bring the tile up to the ceiling. Also used a ceiling to floor shower curtain to add height. White wainscoting with a dark floral wallpaper for visual interest. 45in tall vanity mirror to make it tall too. Looks great!!
Love the big mirror idea 😊 thank you so much for all this information Lisa . I have to re do my small bathroom
Wait, no green?? Did i miss why? My bath is in SW seasalt and I 💚 it
Mine is too! Exactly the same color! I love it!❤😊
Okay, adding shelving for storage in a small bathroom….use it for useable items, not ceramic birds unless they poop cotton balls and Qtips. A box of tissues. Lovely containers for your make up. Wash cloths.
I love your big mirror pro tip for viewers to consider ❤️ Whenever I visit spots with small bathrooms but with big mirrors the space looks so open 👍😍
However, be mindful of what you want to reflect, and what you dont! :)
Love the large tile suggestion, filing away for next makeover.
I have only put my makeup on in a bathroom when we stay at a hotel. At home I have my makeup mirror and makeup stuff on my dresser. I dry and curl my hair at my dresser, too. So much more comfy to sit in a chair to do all that than stand at the bathroom sink.
I never thought about the bathroom floor and making it darker. Very cool tip.
I'm in an older home and hate how tiny the bathrooms are. I'm hoping to remodel over time but don't think I'll have the money for big floor plan changes anytime soon but this video gave me a lot of ideas on how I can make the existing bathrooms feel less claustrophobic!
Yes love the larger tile idea. Less grout is always a good thing🙂
You mean exposed grout right?
Genius Lady ⚘ totally love your enthusiasm and how it shows for the love you have for your work.
Purple floor is fabulous!
Thank you Lisa Great suggestions! Stay blessed
Antique mirror wall is so elegant & lovely
Hi Lisa! Love your ideas for a larger tile in a tiny bathroom and the tip to make the floors darker than the walls. Great ideas for my bathroom! Thank you tons! Always love your videos.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much, Elizabeth!! 😊
Love this! Awesome tips. I worked the paint desk at a hardware store for several years. I would try to talk to the customers about their project. Whenever painting the bathroom green came up I would try to have a bit of a discussion about it! Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. Fine if your shower or tub is separate-- oh I am bathing in my beautiful fern room, but not at the sink applying makeup!
Thanks for another great video - this one is full of useful ideas I will come back to.
One tip I'd like to add is about lighting and to think carefully about symmetry.
I have a double basin in my bathroom and each basin has its own wall light above it. The whole assembly looks nice and is symmetrical, BUT the centres of the lights are further apart than the centres of the basins - so if I use the left basin the right side of my face is in shadow and if I stand at the right basin the left of my face is in shadow.
When I get to re-doing my bathroom that's going to get fixed.
You always have the BEST tips!!!
My teenie-tiny (5.5x6.5 foot) 1907 bathroom was remodeled last summer. It went from brown/beige, thick porcelain floor tiles in the shower and on the floor and backsplash to a white bathroom (white subway tile) with touches of gray marble and real wood white painted beadboard on the wall as a backsplash. It's a little jewel box that I love, love. It has a skylight as well, which really brings in light and character.
Thank you Lisa! Always great.
Dearest Ms Lisa, I cannot thank you enough for the advise , eSPECIALly, your PRO-tips!!! OMG, I am so grateful!! You are generous and selfish..doing that. Your fans are eternally....hooked! Thank you! (and thank you for reminding us about NO GREEN! ;))
You are so welcome, Helene! 💛
Lisa you have such positive energy. Alongside your knowledge and good tips, you are a pleasure to listen to. ,🌞
Thank you so much, Katella! 💛
I love your ideas and your energy ... Thank you
That was so fun and informative! Thanks Lisa. I am sure we will have a "deep dive" in Dezign Club soon. I have learned so much. I love the Club!
Yay! I’m so glad to hear that! 😘😘😘
Excellent tips as usual, thank you!
I have a condo with small bathrooms and one tip I would add is what I did in my second bathroom, which has a tub. Instead of a shower curtain I used a half glass wall. It makes the bathroom appear bigger.
I keep liking the idea of the half glass would love to see a pic mine is gutted now and I'm overwhelmed
We did bright green walls in our main bathroom with gray/green penny tiles on the floor. Our vanity, shower, medicine cabinet, etc. were gloss white. It was one of the reasons our house sold in 1 day. BTW, I don’t usually wear makeup!
Totally agree; I did a Sage Green with White Beadbaord, vanity recessed medicine cabinet, shelving, and crown all Gloss, and Simi Gloss white with Octogon and dot tile everyone says wow what great character and loves it.... SO what's wrong with a light/soft green????
I'm a big fan of soft green walls and white trim really in any room as long as there's variety between rooms. All white or tan walls in the whole house is boring to me.
I love that mirrored shower. Wow
Uh-oh. I begin watching this with fear and trepidation that I'll find I've done some of these NO-NOs. LOL. Love that green & white tile floor in the white bathroom. People really do tend to neglect the vertical space they have to use. I adore the shower that runs at the odd angle along the roofline. The large-mirror spaces you showed were all terrific. Sad to say, I have a tiny bathroom that I must find a single focal point for and follow your advice given here. Thanks.
Great advise Lisa! ❤
Hi how’re you doing?
I enjoy watching you. You are so excited about the topic. It shows that you love what you do.
Glad you enjoy it!
I like your opening remarks! so true....... many mistakes if you want to phrase it that way. - lol 🤣
#4 - a minor mistake that many (but not all) folks do: leaving the toilet seat up!
It costs $0 to fix. Of course, it has to be important to family members.
We replaced the builder-grade toilet SEATS with slow-close seats. No slamming seat lids anymore.
After watching a few of those CZcams videos of toilets being flushed with the seat closed vs. the seat open, well, that convinced several family members to put the seat down.
_[I'll try to keep this short, otherwise I could go on like a crazy person about this topic.]_
*_...cheering loudly from the sidelines...._*
Oh....my....word..... *YES!*
A toilet lid (or worse, the seat AND lid) left up / open is *_so bad_* on so many levels. I'll give you two:
1) For the 36 people in North America who haven't heard yet, when you flush the toilet, bubbles are created and burst in the air, literally *covering everything in the vicinity with urine and fecal matter* if the lid's open;
2) It looks like unholy heck! Seriously---a toilet lid left up looks like some greasy hillbillies live there who haven't bathed in months and who often just go on the floor because it's too much bother to get to the toilet. Just *UGH!*
What utterly floors me is that people who leave toilets open would likely *never leave their kitchen cupboards open,* or their oven door, or their car doors when parked, or leave their trousers' fly open....or a hundred other odd, eyebrow-raising habits.
Ugh---again. I still sound like a crazy person :(
Yes! If the toilet is not in use, the lid needs to be closed. I can’t believe how many bathroom selfies I see where people are standing in front of a toilet with the lid up 🤭. It’s just gross and wrong.
Yes, not only because of the poop spray, but because my cat has an unholy fascination with the bucket of water and thinks it's a perfect receptacle for his toys.
Finally got my roommate to stop leaving it up by marching her in the bathroom and asking her to fish the latest drowned cat toy out of the toilet.
I wish I could quiet the noise from all my bathrooms
I’m a Realtor and you’ve hit my pet peeve of ad photos and when I’m showing. One agent put a picture with a floater in the toilet. 🤦♀️ And I shouldn’t have to run ahead and shut down the hole before the customers arrive. Good grief.
Great tips as always.
My oh my I love you energy !
Thank you Lisa!!!🌹❤️
Thank you Lisa!
Yay! I need this … my bathroom is the pits. Lisa, do you have any thoughts on refinishing tubs (mine is 1950s baby blue). Do they hold up??
...very informative, very useful - as always... and as always presented with a lot of positive energy...
You're the greatest design teacher!
Great advice, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent! Thank you. 🌈
Wow, I loved the video and your style - it's surprisingly relaxing🥰 The first mistake was so eye-opening!
Glad you liked it, Bebe!! 💛
JAJAJAJAHA!! Love, looove LOOOVE greens 🤷🏻♀️
😘🤗🤗🤗
Love from Spain 💃
Could you talk sometime about light fixtures for wet areas? I love all the lights you're showing, but it's hard to find anything but sconces for bathrooms that are wet rated. Thanks. Love your channel.
You are so darn cute! You are so funny and can hold my attention every second of your videos. So much fun energy!!!!
Awesome! Thank you 🥰
Awesome! I love your energy too!
Thank you so much! Yay!
gee your spot on with those points
We're finishing our basement and I plan on doing large tiles and carrying it up the walls.
Please share why green isn't a color to use in a bathroom. I Iove a soft light green. Much appreciation 💛
The reflection makes you look sick-literally
@@cathylehman7538 not everyone. My bathroom is original 1932 with historic green tiles and fixtures, plus a green basket weave floor pattern. It's beautiful and there's no issues at all with having green.
Lili, your bathroom sounds lovely! The times I've been in a green bathroom, the reflected color has just made me look AWFUL!
Green should be fine. It’s a complementary color to red. If anything it would bring out more of the warm tones in the skin.
I’m so glad you showed some small baths. Mine is minuscule. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for the helpful design tips and examples of beautiful bathrooms. I’m remodeling my bathroom and haven’t known where to start. I did notice the vanity mirrors on three or four of the earlier examples in the video were mounted extremely high above the sink. You’d literally need to be at least 6’ tall to see into them and I’m getting shorter by the decade. Loved the color strategies.
Hello 👋how are you doing?
Hello I just found your Channel I have just purchased a mobile home in Vegas and I'm going to remodel the two bathrooms. I love your idea of taking the tile up the wall and also using the larger tiles in showers. Thank you for your teachings
You are so welcome, Yvette! And good luck with remodel!! 💛
Best ever tips ! 👍👏✍️
What I don't like about niches in the shower is that they're put in like it's a frame for a piece of art, when what it's really used for is showcasing shampoo bottles.
My sister had her shower designed with low tiled walls on the side toward the room (glass above). So the niches are totally concealed, as well as being incredibly handy.
I feel like you *can* have dark if you really want it, but it takes a bit more effort and thought. You can totally do an entire bathroom in slate, or something similar, but do the whole room in it. Dark colors only make a room look larger if you do the whole room in them. Something like an accent wall, or a darker shower stall is going to chop up the space. If you really want dark, you have to commit to it. You also have to be super careful about the lighting. (You may also want a separate space like a dressing room or vanity table if you're someone who likes makeup.)
I feel like the only thing you really have to avoid color-wise are medium tones. You can do super dark, or light. Anything in between is going to look dingy and dirty.
My brother has always dreamed if having a bright orange bathroom to wake up to every morning, and it turned out a bit darker than I had hoped, but a white bathroom set with a black tribal print blended it right out. The orange is almost a neutral now!
@@Nonsequitoria2010 I feel like you have a lot more flexibility in terms of bathroom design when you're designing for guys. (Husband and I are both guys.) When you don't have to worry about decent lighting for makeup application and such, you can go pretty out of the box with the design.
I also feel like color is best either super bold, or very traditional. Ugly happens when people want to split the difference.
Love it!
You get my subscription because you show the picture as you are talking!! Some interior commentators yammer on dramatically--as though they have no clue that their channels aren't about THEM--but are about the arts and analysis involved in interior design!
You are fabulous!!!
Loving that chic black 3/4 sleeve sweater you're wearing! Can you share either where you purchased it or who makes it? I'd like to buy 3 or 4 of them; that's a timeless wardrobe staple.
So many great tips! Thank you~
You’re so sweet, I have a closet full of them, I need a uniform,🤣 it’s either from Banana or Clib Monaco, they do the best. Might be available in the Dezignclub store in the lisa closet section...www.the Dezignclub store.com🙌🏻❤️
Thanks Lisa for the very helpful tips. Also would like to know how to choose the right chandelier ( style and size) for different places such as dining room, above the staircase… if you could do a video on that, it will be awesome!
Cindy! I have discussed lighting before, but let me link it here: czcams.com/video/_ngjebdFVUY/video.html. I hope this video helps! You can also check out thedezignclub lighting collection for inspo! 💛
@@LisaHoltDesign Thanks Lisa.
Love, love, love! I literally have the smallest bathroom in the world…no…universe. Thanks for the tips.
OMG I’m dying hahahaha ! That first bath is the EXACT bath in the 1916 duplex I’m about to close on - and that bath is the only think that has terrified me about property - thanks for video !! Now I know what to do !!
Love what you showed, great ideas
Thanks so much! 😊
I love tile all the way to ceiling in bathrooms! Its chic and unified.
A mistake I often see: wall lights above the mirror instead of on both sides of the mirror. Lights above means you shade your own face and it’s difficult to see the lower half of your face for details like make-up or shaving.
Totally agree.
And, I'll add that to accomplish good light on the face, the old, out-of-style-twenty-years-ago 'Hollywood Mirror Lights' are still the best. (These are the ones that come in 'strips' with bare, usually frosted 'Snowball' style bulbs.)
Yes! Totally agree.
I love my tiny honeydew green bathroom, which is in the exact configuration as the dark bathroom with the striped shower curtain. Home circa 1945. With the window right in the center of the shower/tub and bright white tile 4X4. The one window faces east and it glows in the morning. When we make it ADA accessible, I plan for some light marble floors with a small border,. As a 60+ with arthritis, I'm toying with the idea of a step-in tub/shower or keeping it a apron tub and shower combo.
Marble floors are very slippery when wet. Step in tubs mean you have to sit in it while it fills and sit naked, wet, and cold waiting for it to empty. Inconvenient and chilly both ways!
At first I thought this would be annoying and useless, but I stuck around and she did a great job! Also, what are you taking with your coffee!? I’ll have one too… that energy and enthusiasm is so great
WOW! as you are talking I can see the changes in my bathroom! It has awful blue tiles with greyish floor tiles like glazed bricks. And a meds cabinet tucked to the side of basin. Going to change a few things, pronto! Thank you.
I live in an apartment and my bathroom is less than glamorous. I whitewashed my whole apartment. I have hideouts beige carpet and bizarre beige formica countertops. I want my apartment to be girly and glamorous . The whitewashing made a massive difference.
Thanks Lisa I'm doing my bathroom now
Well, THIS should be good! Matching fluffy toilet seat covers/ tank covers/ contoured toilet rugs with coordinated crocheted toilet paper roll covers? Sliding glass shower doors? Green walls that make your reflection look like you have a terrible case of jaundice?... So many possibilities!
Hi there Ann!!!!
Oh,those dusty knit toilet paper covers!
So matching toilet cover sets are a go, then, Lisa? You didn't breathe a word about them! --Love you, Lisa!!!
You're kidding.....right? 😆
@Cindy Steffens: ABSOLUTELY kidding!!!
Great advice. I am currently renovating a small home in southern Italy 🇮🇹. I am downsizing from my current home. Despite moving a wall to enlarge the bathroom, it is a small space. I will consider installing the same tile on the floor to the walls. Great advice.
Sounds great!
Thank you. I have 1 (busy) focal wall, seen from the master bedroom. I was about to hand a large framed print over 1/2 the mirror. I will hang it in another room or give it away. I don't need a double sink, so I am building a box to fit over the extra sink for a candle and vase of flowers in a decorative tray.
Glad it was helpful, Mary!! 💛
Thank you so much I’m designing my small master bathroom and your tips are very helpful
You are so welcome! I can answer questions and help over at my site in my site... dezignspace.com
Id like tub and shower (together) options. I hate the norm bathtub with curtain or sliding door. I dont have room for one of each so I need updated shower/tub space ideas that makes a small BR look larger. I want a tub too as everyone wants a tub sometime.
Another great video! Although I will never give up my green. I love a soft green (think outside natural light sage green) that brings the outside in. I decorate with plants and it is such a great backdrop even in a bathroom. Maybe it is because I have rosacea and the green helps my skin in the mirror. 😆 I love the oversized mirrors you suggested though!
I agree with you. My wife and I have painted nearly every room in our home a shade of green plus a sand / tan color in the living room. We love our “Avocado” shades throughout our home. With white trim and dark floors it really is starting to come together and looks nice. Maybe I missed the reason why “Never use green”. What is the reasoning behind this?
@@BurkeStanionI’m super curious about the No green myself. I have a very light shade of a minty green right now.
I think I was being complimented in maximizing bathroom walls. 😍😍
The best!
The video was beautiful and informative! I enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately that is all high end stuff and out of my budget yet I found the ideas Really interesting and know I can downgrade a great deal and be just as happy.
You can do it!
I have watched almost your wonderful videos. What would you do if you have to combine laundry with bathroom? Thank you!
Thank you so much, it’s so useful
Glad it was helpful, Maggie!!

After watching these great design tips, I'm at the very least going to purchase a new more sophisticated and off white or very light color shower curtain. I pulled back the patterned one I had to expose only the shower liner so I could imagine a lighter color shower curtain and it instantly made the bathroom look larger. Thank you Lisa!
Great to hear, Jamil!
My sink & toilet are wall mounted, I added an IKEA cabinet between studs, all white, chrome hardware & lighting. White glossy 3x12 subway tile stacked in a 5x8 bathroom
You are wonderful. I used your tips. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Ohh 4:14 OK one thing that’s been preventing me from putting a second bathroom in our attic it’s already remodeled basically finished, but the house is from 1927 and that space is big enough for a good size bathroom but it’s not tall enough I could put pop in the sunroof! Thanks for the idea
