Awesome Tortillas Fast & Easy - Forget EVERYTHING You Learned Before
Yes, John has a cooking channel now! And I'm cooking my own way, which usually means making something to help do that. So there will be some time in the shop building some gadget, then using it to make something delicious to eat.
In this video I make a tortilla press and then use it to make the best tortillas you will ever have.
The press is simple, just two pieces of 3/4" plywood, but I jazzed it up my doing some "painting with plastic" 3D printing a southwestern scene that I designed in FreeCad. I also designed and 3D printed the continuous hinge for the press.
Tortilla dough recipe:
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1 cup flour, white or whole wheat
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- black pepper and spices to taste
Mix and let rise for 30-40 minutes than divide into 4 pieces for large tortillas, 6 for smaller ones. Flatten with press between two layers of plastic and freeze.
Heat pan to 400-425 degrees F and cook each tortilla for roughly 2 minutes per side. Store in a sealed container to keep them from drying out.
These tortillas are soft and chewy and once you start making them, you'll never go back to store-bought ones again. Using yeast adds flavour and the result is an airy bread-like texture that's far superior to anything else.
The recipe is also fat free - no oil is needed at all. In the second batch shown in the video I use oil on my hands to shape the balls as an option, rather than adding flour.

Can You Refinish Plywood Flooring?

A few obvious things: Yes, I make mistakes once in a while. Everyone does, especially if you try new things. Sanding an entire floor with this type of sander would take a while - roughly 3 hours for a 100 square foot room - but that's not a whole lot more than one of those big pad sanders that you can rent. Consider the time it takes to go get that sander and bring it back after you are finishe...

Making Drawers For Bottles And Cans - Space for 108

I figured the cabinet beside the fridge would be a great place to keep the bottles and cans I use. There is space for a total of 108, 36 in each drawer. Before you start lecturing me on using bottled water, consider that my water supply here (a drilled well) doesn't provide good quality water. It's drinkable, but tastes terrible and the filter systems I've tried (and spent a lot of money on) do...
Making Cabinet Doors - Spray Finishing, Putting Them On and Fixing Problems

It took most of a full day and nearly 2 liters of water based poly to finish the doors with three coats front and back. I sanded between coats, 220 grit between the first and second, and 400 between the second and third. The hinge fix at the end may seem like butchery to the inexperienced idealists watching, but it's an example of a very common way to deal with a problem. The purest burns up a ...

Talking About How I Made My Shower While Making My Shower
At around 5:40 that's an infrared thermometer that he's using to get the water temperature. I bought one of those from Walmart several years ago for something like $13. I can't imagine now how I did without it. Very handy. It doesn't give accurate temperatures for bare metal, but that's about the only limitation. I also use it to confirm oven temperatures, aiming it at the ceramic-coated metal sides.
Who knew? I like it..good job.
John, your ability to come up with new ideas to entertain never ceases to amaze me. Wonderful.
John one of my favorite videos of yours is the shop pancakes 🤣. Not sure why, just love it. Thanks
Ahh I remember when I first got my 3D printer... Every problem had a solution, that could be PRINTED!
That's where a lot of guys go wrong: looking for problems to solve instead of letting the new tool expand creativity.
Well done.
Nice video John! Thanks for sharing it with us!💖👍😎JP
First, thanks for the fix. Us long timers enjoy it. Second, it was a little sneaky there with that icon. I don't think anyone recognized it. I put it in my second series to watch videos. Now you have gonna abs made me hungry. Thanks😊
This is such a fun video John. Enjoyed it. Thanks.

This is a separate channel already. I stopped putting new videos on here 5 years ago and decided I'd start using it again, except change it to cooking.
Really interesting indeed, John! Looks delicious! 😃 Thanks for the recipe!!! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
👍great video

I'm pretty sure a Mexican or even a Texan would disagree with this recipe, however it seems to work.

My god is been a long ass time M8, hope your good chief 👍
Not saying you're a genius, John, but you're a notch or two closer than most of us.
Love the hinge and the video. Looks like the perfect recipe. 😄
I worried about the content change. I should have given you more credit. You're keeping this old subscriber. In the future, would you share your thoughts and recommendations for getting into 3D printing on a budget? In any case, thanks for great free content. I've learned a lot over the years, pushing beyond the bounds of wood.
The Bambu A1 looks pretty good and it's not expensive.
You had me wondering...what kind of YT mix-up is this?
I don't cook or do your projects but I enjoy seeing how you adapt and overcome the things you tackle.
Wonder wtf this channel was, saw the table saw and got excited. Forgetting the salt is called an autolyse in professional bakeries ;^)
It's going to be interesting, Jake :)
@@IBuildItHome 😎 I still make your no knead "Heisz Buns" minimum once a month.

Unsubscribed
Why do you have to let people know you unsubscribed?
Obviously you are not a fan of John. There are plenty of shallow people out there you should get along with just fine.
I prefer if guys unsub if they aren't into the new topic and aren't going watch the videos. It's better for me if as many of the subscribers watch as possible.
I've never seen him before but he has no business using a table saw. He's going to have a hard time cooking with missing fingers.
@@IBuildItHomeI love that you "loved" the unsub comment. Such a John move .... 🤣🤣
...is the association with online hate group Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) on purpose, or just an unfortunate coincidence?
Have not tried flour tortillas. I was surprised to see yeast in there!
That's because tortillas aren't supposed to have yeast in them.
@@SirGuido I think that's where "his own way" comes in
@@SirGuidoyes, I guess wraps, or flatbreads would be a better term, but I think everyone knew what was meant. The yeast in these particular ones doesn't seem to offer a lot of rise, but I suspect that's because of the flour type rather than anything else, I'm sure it offers enhanced flavour. They look great.
The yeast and rise time add flavour, plus improve the texture. Best way to judge the result is to make them and see how they turn out, and that's easier to do than anything short of buying them ready made.
How big's your cup there, John? Or will it not matter so long as you use the same one for the water and flour?
Twice as much flour as water, by volume, but it's not critical. It can be a bit drier or a bit wetter.
So, somehow you've managed to combine all of my favorite hobbies into one! This is genius!
Hey John! It's been a while since I've landed on any of your content. Good to see you're still creating. Last I was watching you were going for walks and working on your health. Looks like it's paying off. Keep it up!

Brief, simple and straight to the point. Scoring both sides is a game changer, worked an absolute treat and using half of a wooden clothes peg. Thanks a million.
Slots can be much wider therefore less vents would be needed.
Did not realize you can really sand a bit on plywood. Thanks!

I would have liked to see the whole door when it was completed.
They make blank out plates and blank out plugs for deadbolt holes. Repairing a door this way doesn’t last long. It’s best to have a professional fix them so they last.
I remembered this vid from a year ago or so and came back to it. This will stay relevant for indefinetly particularly as the prices of door keeps going up to the moon and yet one can make it easily with ply thanks to this excellent video. Thanks a lot!
