I am Hungarian, and one of my foreign friends told me that when he listened to Hungarians talking - especially when we say goodbye over the phone, it sounds like some nasty rap song. CJ Ruaya Hey, you're Filipino? I'd like to ask you something. I'm always curious. Why is the country name "the Philippines" but the people of the Philippines are Filipino? Why not the Filippines or Philipino? And why do you have "the" in front of the country name? I mean, we don't call "the Canada" or "the India", right?
Yonguk Lee You can search it yourself but I'll try to answer your questions. Philippines was named after the King of Spain when a spanish explorer discovered our islands. He called it Las Islas Filipinas which translates to The Philippine Islands in English after the Americans colonized us. When the Americans departed we changed it to The Philippines. There's still "The" because our country's name remained as a colonial name. Filipino is derive from the word Filipinas and only the elites were allowed to call themselves Filipinos and the common people as Indios. Then a group of people back in 19th century encouraged people to call themselves Filipino to spread nationalism and to fight the colonizers. Just like in Indonesia and the other countries, they just translated the name that was given to them by their colonizers into their own native language.
Super hilarious. Really enjoyed this one. You're the ONLY comedian who can actually make me laugh. I have never found any other comedian who can make me laugh. I must be a real serious person.
I'm an American, and I worked with a Cambodian lady who told me "susu" means "Keep going". So every night at work we would say that to each other and laugh. One night I said that to a Filipino lady, and she was not amused. I didn't think the word had any meaning at all in her language, so I was quite embarrassed when she told me what it meant.
