Examples: accidently breaking a flower pot with a football; Accidentally going against something with my bike and breaking it (because i was still a bit clumbsy of age). What i mean is, as long it was accidental, and i honestly showed regret, and i honestly was the first one apologising and trying to fix - i would be ok! ...but.. ... I'm Italian-Irish. When I was 20, my Italian father slapped me across the face for saying something disrespectful to him. I have one child, a son, and taught him to be empathic and to be respectful towards all people regardless of gender, sexual orientation (his best friend in HS is trans), races, religions, nationalities, etc., but I never hit him. Not entirely sure that was the right call. He's respectful to everyone except me. A little bit of fear when he was younger might have made it easier to discipline him when he was older.

I'm Italian-Irish. When I was 20, my Italian father slapped me across the face for saying something disrespectful to him. I have one child, a son, and taught him to be empathic and to be respectful towards all people regardless of gender, sexual orientation (his best friend in HS is trans), races, religions, nationalities, etc., but I never hit him. Not entirely sure that was the right call. He's respectful to everyone except me. A little bit of fear when he was younger might have made it easier to discipline him when he was older.
You are a good parent. Hitting your child instills fear, explaining to them why it's wrong is better in the long run is better

As long as there is love to balance the discipline,the fear will always be from the consequence of not following the rules, disrespect or anything that needs that kind of discipline.
