China’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Hainan
Vložit

- China is considering building a 12 billion dollar tunnel to the island of Hainan. In the south of China, the island of Hainan is separated from the mainland by the thin, 20 kilometer wide Qiongzhou strait. The island hosts 10 million people and a booming tourism industry. Despite this, currently, there are no connections across it. For this reason, the idea of building a tunnel across the strait is being seriously pursued. A tunnel would increase tourism on the island, remove transport congestion, and provide China with a strategic advantage in the South China Sea. However, the idea also has several issues, including environmental damage, cost concerns and earthquakes. Nevertheless, Wu Shicun and other Chinese officials are promoting the project and trying to get it built by 2033.

Hey guys! At 7:01, I mention that the Channel Tunnel is widely considered a failure. I should have mentioned that this is purely from an investment standpoint. As for its functionality and benefits to the public, the project is largely considered a success!
public transportation shouldn't always consider ROI. You will consider China's high speed railway system a failure too considering ROI however the hidden benefits and social impact is tremendous. Maybe that's some benefits of socialism.
@@erlieric4173 High speed railway is not a product of socialism but a mixed economy with a high priority on infrastructure. Cuba and Venezuela dont have high speed railway despity being socialist nations but Japan has without ever having a socialist goverment. Glad you corrected yourself in the comments. I was going to ask for proof that people consider the channel a failure because I certainly don't. As for investment, I guess I can accept that even without facts and figures (mostly bc I don't care about that part lol).
[The Chunnel] "is now widely considered a failure." Really??! Who can even imagine it not being there, now? After Brexit, it could be argued it's even more important than it was, softening the UK's new isolation.
The channel tunnel is not considered a failure
I mean really. Because the project was over budget? Then half or more of the infrastructure projects in existence today would be “failures”.
Yeah, have never heard that said
For investors, it was!
@@FuturologyChannel Then say that. “Failure” implies that it didn’t do what it was made or designed to do.

I had assumed there was already a tunnel or bridge there lol
Great video.
However, I'm not so sure that the Channel tunnel is "widely considered a failure", despite the costs that went into it.
It’s not, the tunnel has been beneficial for both the UK and France.
@@TheLiamster according to the MSM in the last month there is a possibility for the Tunnel going broke, it seems due to Brexit the Pandemic causing huge drop in passengers the French who are majority share holders want the UK goverment to help with a bail out but Johnson isn't listening, the thing is the users and main benefits are the UK population and businesses, not the French,? 🏴🏴

Very much not a failure and has been a hugely important link for UK-Europe trade and people
6:52 🤔 The channel project between UK and France is not at all considered a failure. Its construction went over budget but investors made their money back and it’s a profitable piece of infrastructure even with Brexit….

For a country that seems to have few reservations spending large sums of money on huge infrastructure projects (mega tall skyscrapers, high speed rail, man made islands in the South China sea, etc) I doubt cost alone would ever be seen as a permanent detractor for a project that has the ability to physically connect a major province with the mainland. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t been done already.
its not strictly the cost. its the fact that the area is a active seismic zone and experiences harsh weather at times. previously china did not have the technology to build something there that could be safe. they do now, so we'll see.
Because of earthquake. I was from Zhanjiang, the greatest city of Leizhou Penisula, here is in the Zeismic Zone as the video mentioned, the Chinese government has always been extremely cautious in major projects involving risks to human life.
The current ride across the strait is 4 hours in train, most of which spent on waiting, loading and unloading the train cars on and off the ferry. A very terrible experience.
I just discovered your Channel today after I stumbled upon your Finland Estonia tunnel video, really loving it 💕

I have lived in China and while I was there, Hainan was a very ecologically sensitive area. Only electric cars were allowed. Hainan is also a militarily sensitive area as China's submarine fleet is located nearby. Bottom line: If China wants it built, they will build it.
isnt it cheaper to build sea express highway compared to tunnel?
seems pretty silly for hainan to be an international shipping port when in order to leave the island goods have to be loaded onto ships again. i think it's inevitable that a link will be build eventually but i would like to see it soon rather than later, but that's just because it's exciting to see this stuff. The fact that the straight is hit both by tropical storms as well as earthquakes, making both bridges and tunnels impractical, would make it a good candidate to build the first undersea floating tunnel which would be amazing to see. But it might be too early to put an untested idea to the test with such a major project, catastrophic failure certaunly wouldn't look good.
Beautiful content and video, love it!
I have an idea which maybe increase the safety of submerged floating tunnel: first we build a large tube, then we build a smaller tube inside it. The area between the large tube and the small tube we fill it with some jelly-like materials. If there is earthquake, the jelly-like layer absorb most of the damage, which can at least protect the small tube. Even if the small tube was broke, the jelly-like layer reduce the leakage speed within the small tube, which allows people inside to evacuate.
China has taken Nike's motto too seriously "Just do it" 😂😂😂
I love China ❤️❤️🇨🇳❤️❤️ from Nigeria 💚💚🇳🇬🇳🇬💚💚
Hainan is already filled with visitors during the hot season. I am a little concerned the eco system can bare with the amount of tourists if the tunnel is built.
Tourist number will continue to grow regardless. A rail link would be beneficial reducing plane emissions.

Nice video.
so is there going to be a highway or is it going to be a rail only tunnel???
Maybe cars will be allowed to be transported in trains, that is how it is with the channel tunnel
Great video! You made a small error tho. There are actually two non-contiguous provinces in China, Hainan, and Taiwan.
I'm actually surprised they still not built rail and road connection to Hainan.
High speed rail already exist on both side of the strait.
Hainan used to be an area with a lot of ecological awareness, only electric cars were allowed on the island. It appears the pressures of economics and geo-politics are changing that.
Yaa great job...and waite to see the tunnel
Woah China is developing so fast it's unbelievable! 😀

Can high speed rail be used for freight? If not, wouldn't they need two tunnels or two lines within a tunnel?
hahaha, Chinese will try to do as big as possible without doubt. There is a plan for high speed freight train for a while.
If the Chinese have already made mention of this project, then we can pretty much consider it done. You can argue about ROI, engineering challenges etc all you want, but trust the damn Chinese to have already ironed out and planned the entire project long time ago. They don't just sit on their hands and argue about "feasibility" and all that, they just plan and execute, usually achieving more than planned.
Nope. Video clearly says the project was contemplated publicly since the 90s, was put into the 5-year plan in 2011, and yet still no construction. Feasibility is crucial a part of planning and the Chinese gov't does plenty of feasibility evaluation.
Anyone can please tell me the name/location of the bridge at 2:40? Thanks
Great job !!!👍👍👍
as an american living in china i really like what these guys do in terms of infrastructure. i live in a 3rd tier city rizhao in shandong. when i got here in 2013 it was a mess. mostly villages. my wife was born in 1990 and she remembers when there were no roads here. theyve done a hell of a job modernizing that it puts my native brooklyn to shame. i saw my apartment being built. i live on the 29th floor, i remember when this area was all villages. when i got here people were living in sub standard housing in many places. now theyre living better than people from my native bushwick, brooklyn. those apartments are made of brick and wood, built in the 1930's and cost about 2k a month to liv in those crappy railroad apartments. the average apartment here is 3 bedrooms with heated floors made of reinforced steel and concrete.

Bridge above = flow of Tourism.
Tunnel below = Commercial, Military.
Oh, my parents in law own an apartment in dong fan. Lovely place.
Not only the Hainan rail + road link, but including the Taiwan rail + road link will be completed by the end of the next decade
Taiwan is an independent nation and it will always be!
@Thanos Biden No! Why?
Love the idea but no one bothered to mention the nuclear submarine base deep beneath the island. Hainan Island's hollowed-out interior resembles a scene from a James Bond movie. With berths for at least 15 submarines, five of which are nuclear, armed with 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles [ICBMs] the island commands the entrance to the South China Sea.
The Tunnel will be an added essential project for Hainan's Free Port Tourism, efficiency transportation services of goods in and out, more importantly Arm forces will have better advantages.
I mean it makes sense that they would
You should make a video about a bridge across the Palk Strait!
The bridge solution has also many advantages and a reduced cost.
The tunnel would be a good idea as eventually it should be built.
As for the South China Sea it should be administered by the international community and the military bases should be.used for.civilian purposes.
The US would never go along with that, they have about 35 US bases located there. China doesn't interfere with commercial shipping,...they are the world's largest shipper and any interference with commercial shipping on their part would be crazy. The only thing China wants is for military air and watercraft entering the South China Sea to identify and reveal intentions. That isn't asking a lot but somewhere along the line, facts have been omitted and fractured.
Hainan is NOT the only island that's not linked to China's mainland. There are many small islands along China's coast and of course the island of Taiwan.
Wow it would have more advantages, but I'm afraid if this would give leverage to their navy, the SEA fishermen in SCS will be more suppressed.
I think its a tech demonstration tunnel of the mainland-taiwan tunnel. Taiwan will have a railway tunnel after it reunite with mainland China.

Absolutely go for it!!
A floating tunnel might be the best idea in terms of the fault lines. It would also be more useful for semi-trucks, and cars that way a high-speed rail network won't need to be built. I'm also sure that certain steps can be taken to further protect the wildlife of the island from increased tourism and a larger human population. Hainan would also be a great location for international or regional diplomacy. It would be seen as a better place for intermediation as it is not located on the Chinese mainland and yet it is relatively close to many other Southeast Asian nations.
As for the US, I highly doubt the US would declare war over it. Making Hainan into a large military and naval base just strategically makes sense, no matter how you feel about the South China Sea. I'm willing to acknowledge that as an American patriot. A tunnel and military base would certainly be alarming for the USA, Taiwan and their allies, but I doubt they would do anything about it. The US and its allies would want China to do something offensively first, like invade a Taiwanese, Japanese, Filipino or Vietnamese island, before committing to military action.

High speed train network in China is very successful and used with a very high rate by the population. Unlike individual societies in Western world who prefers cars, collective Chinese population likes using public transportation incl. high speed trains. This tunnel project will bring a lot potential for tourism in Hainan and will be a good alternative to expensive flights to Hainan.
Because Western Societies are intoxicated with this personal/ Individual freedom ideas.
Pitty, Hainan local govermet may not acccept this idea. Before this, they already rejected a similar Cross Sea Bridge proposal.
The Channel Tunnel had initial problems, but was profitable after that. Also it boosted economic growth in the UK and France with the UK mainly benefitting. However, this is now all severely damaged due to Brexit.
Hey, the scene @0:22 was from Hong Kong, not Hainan!
the Chinese Navy also has a huge submarine base just south of Sanya, Hainan

I’m sorry the channel tunnel is considered a failure? It’s bloody brilliant, the best thing since sliced bread even. Pre pandemic the trains were usually reasonably full and its far nicer than flying. PLUS its electric so no pollution, unlike flying from London to paris.
Great China and everything is possible.
Can you please do a tunnel over the Straight of Hormuz? No one talks about it because of the politics but I think it’s feasible and would improve the economy of the area very much. Give Oman access to the world via land that won’t be controlled by Saudi; allowing them to hold even harder to their policy of neutrality.
Great idea! Will definitely consider it for a future video.
I guess it also has a military purpose as China probably has important naval assets on the island.
WHAT NEWS??? Between Estonia and Finland is plan build over 90km long undersea tunnel
What’s the point of listing the environmental concerns? Given the political structure of the nation and all
As Mentioned Hainan is the only tropical climate island in China, so it’s like connect continental US to Hawaii through a tunnel. Would people in US feel against this one if it costed only $12 billion? It would be fantastic for tourism in the winter time.

The Chinese Chunnel. And what is more important is the freight, not the carrying of people. Look at the economics of the Chunnel. People are transported, but it is the freight that is much more important. If the tunnel would also support high speed train, it would require additional lines since freight is what would justify the project. And if you just pushed a traditional line like in the Chunnel, then the high speed rail could be completed only if it made sense. China in the past has shown a willingness to put in infrastructure that was not economically justified to ensure a unified country.
Chunnel traffic in 2016: 138 billion euros. Considered critical in Just in Time and Just in Sequence production.
