Japan’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Korea
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 10. 2020
- Japan is considering constructing a $170 billion tunnel to South Korea, connecting itself to all of mainland Asia and beyond. A tunnel from Japan to Korea is very feasible and would have massive economic and political incentives. It would improve trade and connectivity between Japan and Eurasia, improve cooperation between South Korea and Japan, and serve as a feat of engineering. However, it does come with several major issues, including its enormous cost.

“All of mainland Asia” excuse me South Korea is basically an ISLAND because of the north..
Yeah and he mentioned that it would cut the cost of travel to Europe, but who is going to use a train that runs through North Korea and Russia (which has a different rail gauge necessitating unloading and reloading onto a different train - twice) when ships exist for cargo and aircraft for passengers.
We will have to solve the political situation with North Korea for it to work

"Tunnel to Busan"
After the film "train to Busan" came out, I proposed to all my Korean friends that they tell their movie studios to make a sequel called "Boat to Jeju" and then if shit still went south after that film then the third movie would be called "Tunnel to Fukuoka" lol. So I totally agree with you! It would be a much better movie than the second film that actually came out called "Peninsula" :(
@Thomas Berger Japan is east of Jeju. Jeju island is directly south of South Korea and since South Korea is west of Japan then that makes Jeju west of Japan too. Japan is the most eastern country in Northeast Asia. Cheers! :)
@@Ruckfa
And yet a western nation like New Zealand and Australia are more east than the most eastern country.
"Connecting Japan to mainland Asia" has no argument because of North Korea dividing South Korea from mainland Asia.
Technicaly it would benefit North Korea via fees or tarriffs but well for that to happen it would need to be a sane country
It could theoretically work if Korea re-unified or they could do a system like done in Germany when people had to travel through East Germany to travel between West Berlin and West Germany. Even then I agree with you that I doubt that North Korea would be willing to do that unless it benefited them in a huge way. Even if it did happen, I doubt tourists would use it to go to China because they don’t want to go through North Korea. It’s too risky.
@@MultiLiam24 Korea can't follow the German model, the cultural , political and socio-economic situation are too radicaly different. At best they'll make an alliance but even if North Korea guarantees the safety of transnational projects, investors can't trust it.
South Korea is still part of mainland Asia do to geography does not matter if North Korea divides South Korea from China and ether countries its still part of mainland while japan is a island because its surrounded by water and has no land borders but Korea has land borders with North Korea which is part of mainland Asia

South Korea and Japan use the same gauge. Japan only use a narrower gauge on its old track. But the high-speed rail track uses standard gauge.
I dont think its economically viable tho, if you want to spend few hours to travel between major cities of korea and japan using trains you might as well use airplane instead
@@ibnu9969 While the journey time between train and plane are similar, the plane had a huge disadvantage: pre-flight preparations (check-in, security, etc.). Those takes quite considerable amount of time, even ignoring the stigma of TSA (it is unlikely those will be present).
Besides, if not passengers, freight can benefit from the project.
@@dbclass4075 There's also a major environmental advantage of rail over air traffic.
@@alanfriesen9837 Many people have a terrible habit of ignoring those, so we emphasize other advantages.
Another advantage of trains: they can be travel anywhere with space of a rail, or even completely underground. Ships requires water access, and airports have to be away from city center, or contend with ungrateful neighbors (noise).
@@dbclass4075 Water freight is still cheaper, but it's slower, especially if it's not direct.
I'm always a little surprised by how negative people are on these game-changing projects. Yes, they are expensive, but in the long run they payoff big time. The Japan-Korea tunnel is a minor proposal that most Japanese people do not know about, and it is not talked about at all.
Most Japanese who are aware of this proposal are opposed to connecting with Korea through a tunnel.
Exactly!!!それな!
exactly
The tunnel will serve two contradicting purposes: "It connects the mega-cities of Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing, Seoul, Osaka and Tokyo" and "It could help blunt China's growing influence". Connecting by blunting, or blunting by connecting? So which purpose is the true one? You also forgot that Pyongyang will also be connected and North Korea may not approve this route.
Earthquake considered I reckon trade “issues” are easy to deal with great show
Good one
Although korea runs on the right side, ktx trains and Shinkansen trains run on the left side and operate on the same gauge. So the question is if this is possible, could it be the ktx extending from busan to tokyo, or the shinkansen from kyushu to seoul.

U mean the unification church?
Some people fail to realize that currently south Korea itself is practially an Island nation. its only way to connect to the rest of the world is by air or water. So whats the logic in connecting an island nation to another island nation?🤷♂️
Maybe connect Hokkaido to Sakhalin and then Sakhalin to Asia and then both nations would have a connection to the mainland.
I imagine it would make as much sense as a connection between Ireland and the rest of the UK 🤔
That's how it is now. But while geography remains mostly the same, the political landscape could change quickly one day. I don't think North Korea is going to last many more decades, at some point it will simply break and fall apart by itself.
@@theamici Who knew the USSR would suddenly implode as it did? Caught most civilians by surprise ...
China may build a bridge to south Korea directly to themselves
In the coldest part of the Ice Age, the world ocean level was so low that Japan was joined by land to Kamchatka and to Korea, and the Sea of Japan was an inland lake that overflowed to the sea by a big river through the dry bed of the Tsushima Strait.
cool thanks for the info
For Japan, a more realistic and cost-effective agreement with Russia and the construction of a tunnel to Sakhalin is the connection of that island with mainland Russia, then the connection of Japan with the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Plus the next time Russia goes bankrupt the Japanese will have better chance of buying back Sakhalin. .
Cost effective, except for the fact there is no railway between Sakhalin and the rest of Russia, and connecting the Sakhalin railways to the rest of Russia would probably be more expensive. In addition, there would most likely be less economic incentive due to Japan and Korea being significantly important trading partners compared to Russia.
In addition, the Russian Far East isn't a massively developed or economically powerful region, and using the railway to travel all the way to Europe or China would be more inconvenient.
@@tigeriontigerion9112 Well, the first one seems a lot more likely now and the second one a lot less.

You absolutely right!!! Only no brains think about this !!
@Civilized what a terrible idea!!!
@Civilized when much of cost to build tunnel is paid to japan, can japan give up or concede toll tax to korea? Nonsence.
At all, korea will be intermediate of japan or china and has no advantage but will be fall down for losing geographic advantage just because it was built and japan also could not expanse all cost alone. So tunnel will not be built easily.
0:25 saw the island between Japan and Korea and automatically thought of ghost of tsushima
Something which is really interesting and a big advantage imo is the high speed train, especially in this time with the climate problems, the train is just a more climate friendly option.
As a Korean myself, I think the Koreans commenting here are extremely shortsighted. Integrating Japan to South Korea will give everyone in the region mire economic incentive to connect North Korea to South Korea, which will increase the likelihood of reunification. Reunification solves the demographic crises we will face in 10 years. It will probably be less destabilizing than trying to get mass immigration into SK.
Creating strong economic ties that are balanced among these multiple economic powerhouses will also help de-escalate the tensions in the region.
Sitting behind your keyboard and just reciting government fed ignorant anti-Japanese propaganda like parrots will create a bleak future for SK.
Sure it’d be nice if Korean people can feel like they’ve received a proper apology. But I’d much prefer a stronger economy and a brighter future. Complaining about the Japanese government won’t feed you.
From Japan
I think some people have a misunderstanding.
Between 1930s and 1942, Japan had a plan for the tunnel because Korea was part of Japan at that time. Of course Japan dropped this plan when the war ended.
In 1981, a new tunnel plan was proposed by some Korean civilian organizations including the Korean Unification Church. Thereafter, some politicians of Japan and Korea had meeting several times. And, for example, in 2009, Korean President Lee Myung-Bak showed a tunnel research scheme.
But the Japanese government is almost completely unconcerned about this plan since at least 2005. Perhaps current Korean government too.
At present, only some Japanese pro-Korea politicians, some Korean pro-Japan politicians, and the Korean Unification Church are positive about the plan.

What S. Korea is interested is to build a long railway system that will reach North Korea, China, and Russia as it is more reasonable project that will not only benefit the trades but the boost each others' economies.
There aren't really benefits from building a tunnel from S. Korea to Japan aside from symbolism of neutral understanding and small business profits.

@@koujin4406 Scam investors benefit from sponsor money and they run with it.
Happens all the time with China.
Aside from the immediate environmental impact and upfront cost this project would probably prove to be a smart investment into the future.
It also proves that Japan is incredibly tone deaf in its policy towards South Korea.
Formal apologies for war crimes, sexual exploitation, destruction or relocation of cultural artefacts are seldom forthcoming.
As these grievances happened until 1945 there are still survivors and while trade with Japan is a necessity for South Korea the overall public opinion of Japan especially in recent years has been very low.
With multiple large disputes in the last 5 years (territorial disputes over some tiny islands, the half-assed apologies to the comfort women, the rewriting of history that takes place in Japanese schools, Japan refusing to pay reparations to workers exploited under their rule instead choosing to restrict the delivery of important semi-conductor components to South Korea, which resulted in Korean consumers shunning Japanese products, the fallout over the common intelligence program and so on...).
The South Korean government that approves this project (which essentially is historically linked to Imperial Japan looking to connect its colony to the Japanese 'mainland') is going to face large protests and can probably forget about winning another election anytime soon.
Japan should first and foremost seek to build an honest eye to eye relationship with South Korea, this would cost comparatively very little and would open up possibilities for future cooperation and a tighter connection between the two countries.
You used the photo of Brisbane City's BaT (Bus and Train) tunnel proposal 3:13. Is anything in this video true?
Tunnels connecting South Korea, Japan and China, reminds me of the “belt” system connecting various parts of Denmark (and ultimately the bridge/tunnel to Sweden)
5:42 The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It opened on 1 June 2016 and full service began on 11 December 2016. With a route length of 57.09 km, it is the world's longest railway and deepest traffic tunnel and the first flat, low-level route through the Alps.
You should do a video on the Kra canal through Thailand
If you look at the Korean point of view, constructing the tunnel would mostly benefit Japan, especially if North Korea agrees on a treaty to connect a tunnel going throughout itself onto the main continent of Asia. That is why many Korean citizens are hesitant about this proposition.
Yeah, as if North Korea would ever agree to that. Besides, there are some views that say that South Korea could see some major benefits that outstrip Japan's, like an economic growth past 100%, so there are differing angles to this.
Plot twist - connecting Japan to South Korea and Japan to Russia via Sakhalin would allow South Korea to export goods to Europe via rail and bypass North Korea. Due to gauge difference I guess those trains would have to use Shinkansen tracks at night (coordinated with the maintenance schedule).
It will take 1000 kilometers from Seoul to Russian border in that case and another 10000 kilometers to Moscow and then another 1500 to Berlin that's quite a lot.
@@mauritiusboy7952 Still shorter than the shipping route.
This tunnel should wait until there is a maglev connecting Tokyo to the tunnel's entry. It would be a shame to make such a giant project and not using maglev.

@Sentry911TV In the past, Korean government has proposed undersea tunnel from Busan to Jeju Island. Of course majority or people opposed. Its not that I have anything against Japan, I just think that costs far exceeds benefits. With current technology, cost of building an undersea tunnel is astronomical. Japan is very interested in things like this.
I disagree. Both countries are ageing rapidly and are seeing slowing economic growth as well as being rapidly eclipsed by China. Such a tunnel would be bold move that could revive their moribund economies and breathe new life by allowing further cross border integration and the ease and flow of people could see new business pop up based on the building of this tunnel.

I would love if you do a video on the Stalin-era partially constructed tunnel linking Siberia, Russia to Japan, and Putin’s proposal to finish it.
If such a tunnel were to be constructed, the link between ROK and #Japan would have to be rail-only since it's obvious that ROK drives on the right while #Japan drives on the left. The link between Japanese islands and mainland #Japan can then be both rail and road traffic. Maybe a bridge instead of a tunnel. Otherwise, having only links between Japanese islands and mainland #Japan would be enough while a ferry link between the closest part of #Japan and ROK would been sufficient IMO. But if islanders even oppose such links, then the status quo is the best for the foreseeable future.
I always forget how vast and expensive the United States highway infrastructure is.

Japanese empire’s plan of Korea Conquest😂
3:02 "English Channel"
thought as much; looking at the video title, the chunnel came to mind immediately.
このトンネルは日韓両国が共に望んでいない
Both Japan and South Korea do not want this tunnel (Google translator)
Earthquakes: am i joke to you?
Ps. Both countries are us protectorates. Not just allies 🤣
This makes sense to build but I think that the sakhalin connections would make sense as well.
I have 2 other solutions, given the information in the video, first they may build an artificial island it will help a lot especially between the "bigger island" - I forgot the name - and S.Korea
Option number 2: they make an two wide modern fast ports one in Japan and one in S.Korea for speed boats and ships with cables for boats for high speed, and I also have another better idea but I'm not sure if I should share it for free! lol
There are speed boats aready. It only takes 1:30min to reach Japan. 40 flight...no need for another underwater tunnel.. that idea is insane..... plus I don't think this will happen anyways 🤔
You forgot to mention that earthquakes could cause the tunnel to collapse
You must have missed this 5:39 Seikan Tunnel 54 km long opened in Japan March 1988.
Not if they build it correctly
Tunnels have been built in earthquake zones for quite a long time now. Zero tunnels have collapsed in an earthquake... things like this only happen in movies... real life engineers are much better than that.
Nope, tunnels are usually a safe place to be in an earthquake. This has been extensively studied.
Japanese main islands are all connected by tunnels since 1941 starting with a honshu-kyushu railway
