Japan’s Proposal for a Tunnel to Korea

  • Japan is considering constructing a $170 billion tunnel to South Korea, connecting itself to all of mainland Asia and beyond. A tunnel from Japan to Korea is very feasible and would have massive economic and political incentives. It would improve trade and connectivity between Japan and Eurasia, improve cooperation between South Korea and Japan, and serve as a feat of engineering. However, it does come with several major issues, including its enormous cost.

For Japan, a more realistic and cost-effective agreement with Russia and the construction of a tunnel to Sakhalin is the connection of that island with mainland Russia, then the connection of Japan with the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Cost effective, except for the fact there is no railway between Sakhalin and the rest of Russia, and connecting the Sakhalin railways to the rest of Russia would probably be more expensive. In addition, there would most likely be less economic incentive due to Japan and Korea being significantly important trading partners compared to Russia.
In addition, the Russian Far East isn't a massively developed or economically powerful region, and using the railway to travel all the way to Europe or China would be more inconvenient.

As a Korean myself, I think the Koreans commenting here are extremely shortsighted. Integrating Japan to South Korea will give everyone in the region mire economic incentive to connect North Korea to South Korea, which will increase the likelihood of reunification. Reunification solves the demographic crises we will face in 10 years. It will probably be less destabilizing than trying to get mass immigration into SK.
Creating strong economic ties that are balanced among these multiple economic powerhouses will also help de-escalate the tensions in the region.
Sitting behind your keyboard and just reciting government fed ignorant anti-Japanese propaganda like parrots will create a bleak future for SK.

    From Japan
I think some people have a misunderstanding.
Between 1930s and 1942, Japan had a plan for the tunnel because Korea was part of Japan at that time. Of course Japan dropped this plan when the war ended.
In 1981, a new tunnel plan was proposed by some Korean civilian organizations including the Korean Unification Church. Thereafter, some politicians of Japan and Korea had meeting several times. And, for example, in 2009, Korean President Lee Myung-Bak showed a tunnel research scheme.
But the Japanese government is almost completely unconcerned about this plan since at least 2005. Perhaps current Korean government too.
At present, only some Japanese pro-Korea politicians, some Korean pro-Japan politicians, and the Korean Unification Church are positive about the plan.

Aside from the immediate environmental impact and upfront cost this project would probably prove to be a smart investment into the future.
It also proves that Japan is incredibly tone deaf in its policy towards South Korea.
Formal apologies for war crimes, sexual exploitation, destruction or relocation of cultural artefacts are seldom forthcoming.
As these grievances happened until 1945 there are still survivors and while trade with Japan is a necessity for South Korea the overall public opinion of Japan especially in recent years has been very low.
With multiple large disputes in the last 5 years (territorial disputes over some tiny islands, the half-assed apologies to the comfort women, the rewriting of history that takes place in Japanese schools, Japan refusing to pay reparations to workers exploited under their rule instead choosing to restrict the delivery of important semi-conductor components to South Korea, which resulted in Korean consumers shunning Japanese products, the fallout over the common intelligence program and so on...).
The South Korean government that approves this project (which essentially is historically linked to Imperial Japan looking to connect its colony to the Japanese 'mainland') is going to face large protests and can probably forget about winning another election anytime soon.
Japan should first and foremost seek to build an honest eye to eye relationship with South Korea, this would cost comparatively very little and would open up possibilities for future cooperation and a tighter connection between the two countries.

To connect japan to mainland asia instead of just South Korea. It might be possible to build a tunnel from Hokkaido to Sachalin and then Sachalin to mainland Siberia and the rest of Asia.

@Sentry911TV In the past, Korean government has proposed undersea tunnel from Busan to Jeju Island. Of course majority or people opposed. Its not that I have anything against Japan, I just think that costs far exceeds benefits. With current technology, cost of building an undersea tunnel is astronomical. Plane ticket from Incheon to Tokyo is very cheap why bother with a tunnel.

I disagree. Both countries are ageing rapidly and are seeing slowing economic growth as well as being rapidly eclipsed by China. Such a tunnel would be bold move that could revive their moribund economies and breathe new life by allowing further cross border integration and the ease and flow of people could see new business pop up based on the building of this tunnel.

If such a tunnel were to be constructed, the link between ROK and #Japan would have to be rail-only since it's obvious that ROK drives on the right while #Japan drives on the left. The link between Japanese islands and mainland #Japan can then be both rail and road traffic. Maybe a bridge instead of a tunnel. Otherwise, having only links between Japanese islands and mainland #Japan would be enough while a ferry link between the closest part of #Japan and ROK would been sufficient IMO. But if islanders even oppose such links, then the status quo is the best for the foreseeable future.

I have 2 other solutions, given the information in the video, first they may build an artificial island it will help a lot especially between the "bigger island" - I forgot the name - and S.Korea
Option number 2: they make an two wide modern fast ports one in Japan and one in S.Korea for speed boats and ships with cables for boats for high speed, and I also have another better idea but I'm not sure if I should share it for free! lol

There are speed boats aready. It only takes 1:30min to reach Japan. 40 flight...no need for another underwater tunnel.. that idea is insane..... plus I don't think this will happen anyways 🤔

Tunnels have been built in earthquake zones for quite a long time now. Zero tunnels have collapsed in an earthquake... things like this only happen in movies... real life engineers are much better than that.

Nope, tunnels are usually a safe place to be in an earthquake. This has been extensively studied.
