Finland's Plans for a Tunnel to Estonia

- Finland and Estonia are planning to construct a 15 billion dollar tunnel across the Gulf of Finland, connecting the capital cities of Helsinki and Tallinn. A Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel would transform the economies of the region, creating a twin city metropolitan area and improving connectivity between Finland and the rest of Europe. Two sides are working for its development: the government controlled FinEst Initiative and FinEst Bay Area Development, a private company led by Finnish entrepreneur Peter Vesterbacka.

Yes the finnish commuting for work in tallinn, Also known as cheap liquor
Haha when he said "finnish commuting for work in tallinn" I was like yeah no the truth might be surprising :D
I made that trip once for tourism, I asked the taxi driver to the ferry terminal for a receipt, to have an idea how much they cost so in case I needed another one I could calculate if it was convenient to take one or not (putting a value on time saved, so to speak), but the way I told him made him think that I was using it the get reimbursed by my company or such. He looked amused and when leaving he told me "Enjoy your time in Tallinn!!!!" Haha, of course everybody knows ;)

If I have understood, the Estonians are indeed traveling to Finland for work at various construction sites. The Finns have had other kinds of jobs in Estonia, but much of their travel has also been traditional tourism. It started gradually already before the Estonian independence, but skyrocketed after that. And like so many other comments have already stated, the lower alcohol prices in Estonia have become an incentive, if not the entire reason for Finns to travel to Estonia. One of recent news I have seen is that Estonian alcohol prices are increasing and presumably that is causing more Finns extending their trips all the way through Estonia to Latvia and Lithuania.. Just a piece of news I have seen in Finnish newsprints (actually web news).

A rail connection between Helsinki and Tallinn would connect Finland directly to the entire European rail network.
Suddenly Finnish goods and people could travel anywhere in Europe -- and vice-versa.
Yup, for Finland the rail link is about much more than Estonia (let alone just the cheap beer in all the memes). Logistically, Finland is for practical purposes an island nation. You can only leave by land to the remote, sparsely populated northern parts of Scandinavia, or Russia. The rail link would be a game changer.
Remember we have airplanes too. :D

I think that was precisely why state authorities declined the tunnel for now : Too much Chinese investment or rather not enough State/EU investment.
Ihan turha hanke.
@IngMonkey Also less debteď to China than Africa. EU has experience in constructing tunnels aswell.
A tunnel at this point would only benefit Tallinn and Helsinki along with the whole of Estonia and the Uusimaa region. In 20 years, when Finland has expanded it's logistical routes all the way to the Arctic sea, and there is more containers flowing via Northeast sea route, it will be more viable investment for EU and China aswell :)
Patience
@IngMonkey maybe it will, but it will also be dependent on China
Im finnish and i absolutely love this idea.
Having visited both countries, I see the benefits of this project. Thank you. Great video.
It is a very good idea for both the country's economy
Especially if it's funded privately. If you put this financial burden on the taxpayer, i'd say no thanks! We in Finland already have some of the highest taxes in the world. If you take into account the purchasing power parity we are most likely number two right after North Korea. But we do get a return for those taxes, our society runs great, with free healthcare, education, social welfare etc.
I have my doubts about it being ultimately economically viable.
As an engineering project it would be amazing, but its costs would rival that of the Channel tunnel between France and UK with fraction of the potential traffic, not forgetting that mega projects like these have a tendency to balloon in costs as the project goes on.
Also Helsinki and Tallinn already have quite well established ferry systems that can get across within hours.
Even if it wasn't strictly speaking economically viable, it still would basically turn Tallinn into southern Helsinki. So there's that.
@@DruidEnjoyer You're right about all that. But the last part sounds weird. Just because two cities are close to each other and easily accessed from one another does not mean they integrate into each other automatically. The culture, language and national barriers are quite high, even if they are very similar (they are) and even with no barriers for travelling or no need for visas or passports etc. It's a tale of two cities, not of one.
@@PresidentialWinner Ests and Finns are both Finnic nations with mostly shared culture and similar languages. Helsinki and Tallinn most probably would become more of a twin city/metropolitan area with tunnel. Both cities are quite different both by architecture and population. Tallinn has been around as a town from the 13th century when Northern Estonia aka Estland was part of the Danish Kingdom, but Helsinki grew to become a substantial city only during the time when Finland was part of Imperial Russia starting from 17th century. Tallinn also has a lot bigger immigrant population mostly from the Soviet occupation time's mass immigration which makes it the 4 th European capital after Brussels, Riga and Amsterdam by amount of immigrants and foreign nationals. Helsinki's population is about 80% Finnish while Tallinn's population is unfortunately only about 50% Estonian. This tunnel would most probably start a boom of Finns moving to Tallinn and Estonia as a whole, since real estate is cheaper in Estonia (at least right now. I don't mind it actually since Finns and Ests are genetically, linguistically and culturally the closest nations to each other. We'll manage 🙂
@@carleryk I am well aware of everything you said except the immigration population of Tallinn (I live in Helsinki) But i don't agree with that prediction. It's not that they are so very different, it's that they are in different nations. And the 80 km distance doesn't help.
the ferry jobs wont be lost they will be realicated to the rail company in most cases, good video people around the world will be shocked to see these 2 nations connected to a megga project especially estonia because off its size so it should help in other economic ways as well by advertising them around the world
Well let's be realistic. If you connect the two cities with this tunnel, it's inevitable that a lot of jobs will be lost. You can't possibly expect the tunnel or rail companies to provide as many jobs as the ferries and ships do. What a ridiculous claim.

You might say it's a lot but on other hand Latvia during Covid19 pandemic mysterious burned 4.5bill which is around quarter of tunnel funding needed money and it definitely would pay back fast like 10-20€ tunnel usage fee to drive trough it 25k people travelling daily between Finland to Estonia daily. @Darius M The Soviet _occupation_ still started in 1940, smartass...
@Darius M did you even read it? The second sentence says : The treaty obliged both parties to respect each other's sovereignty and independence.......Well that obviously did not happen. Also have yo ever heard of the MRP? Obviously the russians had no interest in actually following this Treay they made with Estonia from up front already. I rest my case
@Darius M In 1939 the Soviet army entered Estonia and made military bases but did not occupy the country as Estonia agreed to this.
In 1940 The Estonian government was forced to do "elections" where "90% of the people" voted to join the USSR.
@Darius M Estonia was _occupied_ in June 1940 and [illegally] annexed in August 1940. Please learn this specific history before you start lecturing a local - it's embarrassing...
@Darius M Nobody denies that Soviet planes bombed helsinki from Estonian territory. But Estonia was not under Soviet occupation in 1940. They had forced a treaty of military bases onto Estonia and they were in control of certain airfields.
Went to live in Finland (Jyváskylá) thirty years ago and loved it. Reckon that the idea of a Helinki-Tallinn rail tunnel has a much better chance of success than Johnson's bridge from Scotland to Ireland.
“Finns go to work in Tallinn”? I think it’s the opposite actually. My Finnish friend said a lot of Estonians work seasons in Finland to earn more money because wages are higher in Finland while money gets you more in Estonia.

hi lors. from CHICLAYO city, good video congratulations........ 🇵🇪
Can't wait!
CZcams is like a lair for amateur "documentary" makers with a tendency for factually inaccurate deviations - likes this one.
1) The FinEst Bay Area project was made redundant with the new provincial land use plan of Uusimaa. There's no space allocation for the tunnel infrastructure in Espoo. Thus Vesterbacka's plans are at the time being not doable.
2) Like others have already rightly noted: what commuting from Finland to Estonia? It's very marginal. Booze runs and other leisure travel is the most common form of travel in that direction. Mostly the ro-pax ferries carry Baltic workers and loads of cargo from the rest of Europe, as well as some exports from Finland.
3) The Arctic Ocean connection is hypothetical and it would be fair to mention it doesn't exist as per say, but it's just a vision. As for Russia, well, there's railway links from there already.
4) Helsinki doesn't have 1.3 million inhabitants. You've looked at the greater Helsinki region.
5) Finland wasn't invaded in 1939. Yes, the Soviets did indeed try that twice during the world war, but you implied that the country was invaded. You need to be more precise with your wordings.
Regarding 5). The Soviet Union entered Finnish sovereign territory with the use of military force and forced Finland to sign a peace agreement that fulfilled all of the Soviet Unions initial demands. Occupying and then taking over large parts of land on the Karelian Isthmus.
Furthermore, the Continuation war was started by the finish and ended in a mostly Status quo peace yet Finland still had to pay reparations.
Yes, Finland fought extraordinarily well and certainly managed to defend from a full takeover but Finland was invaded.
In my view your comment is unnecessarily negative and doesn't really give much value to the viewer or the creator. I could be wrong but you sound like the kind of person who has never tried to make anything creative all by themselves, and tries to achieve a moral high ground by hating on someone else who is actually trying to make an effort.
Firstly, your wording makes you sound like an elitist who will not consider a creative work worthy of any praise unless it has received a 5 star review from a guy who has been declared to have a good taste by some newspaper. "A lair for amateur "documentary" makers" - not really a constructive way to introduce your criticism whatever it may be, right? If you actually cared about the creator improving in what they do that wouldn't be the way you start a sentence. And what exactly makes a "real documentarist" any better than a guy who prefers to make them independently and share them (for free!!) on CZcams? Because they might have funding from a production company and maybe a film degree? Is that supposed to make human error magically disappear? Are having financial backing and formal qualifications requirements for creating exciting stories? Of course not.
Even if your attitude seems shitty, you could at least have some valid points, but you really fail to impress me with them as well. Points 4, and 5 are just nitpicking since none of those mistakes affect the big picture of the tunnel project that this video is trying to convey. Points 1, 2 and 3 focus only on the current situation - that's not what you want to do if you're building something that might be ready in 10 years and should last for 100. The legislation of Uusimaa, alcohol tourism and the Arctic Ocean connection are things that are not set in stone in any way. Who are you to say that these things won't change in the near future? Legislation is supposed to change over time, that's why we have a thing called the parliament. And Estonia is raising it's alcohol tax every year so soon booze will be the same price as in Finland anyways. The railway connection could be a way to create new reasons to travel than the ones we have right now. For example, you wouldn't want to travel (at least regularly) 2+ hours in one direction to attend a business meeting or a sports game, but you wouldn't mind doing it every day if the travel time was 30 minutes. Thus, the railway would offer much more reasons for people to go from Helsinki to Tallinn than just booze runs.
In a nutshell:
If you don't want a tunnel between Helsinki and Tallinn, that's fine. (Your opinion most likely won't matter anyway)
If you don't like watching "documentaries" on CZcams, that's fine as well. (You can watch the real ones on Netflix right?)
But when someone is trying to inform the rest of us (still, for free!!!!) about a project that makes people excited about the future, you shouldn't be negative and overly critical even if the result isn't 100% perfect (which never happens in life anyways).
I really didn't want for my comment to turn out too negative, but this one hit a nerve for me. :D I don't mean to insult, this is just my strong criticism to your criticism.
"Finland wasn't invaded in 1939."
What do you mean? Finland was invaded in 1939.

Just about as often as you can say any two city names in a video that is centered around those two cities?
Greetings from Lihuania👌👌👍👍
Nice video
1:54 shows video of Riga, Latvia...
I had never heard about this before, and I never realised it was so narrow at one point in the Gulf of Finland. It's fantastic, a brilliant idea! Every Finn only talks about alcohol, but when travels times are cut to a fraction, it will open a whole new world. Look at the Öresund Link between Copenhagen and Malmö. Before the fixed link, people from the Swedish side mostly travelled to Denmark for cheap alcohol, but after its construction people started to commute en masse, not only from the big connected border cities, but also quite a bit inland, widely exceeding expectations.
Go for the bigger tunnel! Don't make the same mistake as Denmark and Sweden with the Öresund Link, cheaping out on capacity resulting it being maxed out after only 15 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98resund_Bridge
We can also look forward to a new genre of 'Finno-Estonian noir' cop series entitled 'The Tunnel', with Finnish and Estonian detectives nipping backwards and forwards between the two countries in pursuit of international criminals.
Idiotic idea. Just learn geography first. There is land connection though Russia.
props for the shot of Riga port at 1:54
Great idea 💡
That will be a Great For people and economy of BOTH countries 👍👍
--- TECHIE SCIENCE channe! 🙏🙏

Meanwhile Singapore & the Indonesian island of Batam are even closer to each other (~20km across the Singapore Strait) & have even larger populations (5.6m & 1m respectively) but I guess the former might be more reluctant to do so as it may encourage more outflow of money from the former e.g. by making it easier for Singaporeans to travel to Batam & spend there, instead of locally (especially as Indonesia has a lower cost of living)
As a Dane all I can say is "Get startet !!" ;o)
What a fabulous idea.
HELOO FROM ROMANIA!!!! 🤗👍
hi Romania, European salutations
Private money is on the table, take it!
There is still ships if the Chinese would try to influence in someway to something which is just speculation.
Even though jobs will be lost in shipping so new jobs will be created in the tunnel but also the islands.
Cargo will have a option, not just depending on shipping and harbours where is possible strikes.
Weather and storms won't be a problem, like we see every year with shipping.
And also we have to remember that shipping is heavily depending on subsidies from the government, not the tunnel.
The islands? What will be happening there? Casinos and leisure?= Money flow.
But also the Rail Baltic is going ahead, so the possibility will be to travel by train to central europe will be possible.
Lets build this!
It will be the finest tunnel mankind has ever seen
I see what you did there.
Yup Trump said it also, the seccond finest tunnel ;)

i recognise that boat at 1:22 like the exact one ive been on it several times
I live in Riga, Latvia. It takes me about 10 hours to drive and ferry to Finland with a car. And costs a lot of fuel. Together with Baltic railway this would be amazing.
Hi! Could you do a single video for Rail Baltica? Love from Latvia ❤🇱🇻
Something that will actually happen
Narrator: "In case you didn't hear last 50 times, i will repeat. Between Helsinki and Tallinn".
"...Hellllsinki and Tallinnnnnnn..."
I believe this video was about Helsinki and… (checks notes) …Tallinn.
@@sneeka2 what, no, no way thats true
I like the future proofing, it makes sense. The island is also an economic boost.
This would make so much sense. I hope it happens some day
idea: make it in a really shallow depth like a couple meters below sea level, to cut off Russia's trade
You could have quantified environmental benefit and included it into the break even point calculation
Interesting project,.. the inner esrth is an amazing place to explore anyway..,
*inner earth..,
Great project!
Well this will make getting cheap alcohol even easier
As most Finns have pointed out, most of the travelling from Helsinki to Tallinn is just for the sake of buying alcohol. Here's why: the excise tax on alcohol is lower in Estonia than in Finland, and thus alcohol is very cheap. A study in 2014 indicated that 34% of alcohol sold in all of Estonia is bought by Finns. Furthermore, the average salary in Helsinki is 50000€ (35000€ after taxes) whereas it's only 26000€ (~20000€ after taxes) in Tallinn encouraging many Estonians to seek employment in Finland, but not the other way around.
I'd personally love this tunnel as an easy gateway to the rest of Europe. Currently the only way Finns can access European rail transport is either by taking a ferry to Estonia or to Sweden (or Saint Petersburg, Russia, but that's a whole other story). Getting back to Finland has to be done the same way. This causes a lot of extra hassle for travellers, and can even be a deterrent for many timid adventurers.
The wage in Finland is 60000€? That seems *VERY* exaggerated. I'd say more around 40000€
@@Taevas___ True, it does seem quite inflated, but this figure only stands true for the capital region of the country. The data was taken from an unbiased source which states the average monthly salary in Helsinki is 5010€, but 3500€ in Finland in general. I'll recheck the values from other sources and edit my post accordingly. Thanks for the comment.
*EDIT:* Based on values from multiple sources, the average income in Helsinki seems to be around 50000€ before taxes, and about 35000€ after taxes. The figures for Tallinn were quite correct, as the average range seems to be around 24 to 32 thousand euros in various sources. The income tax in Estonia is only 20% compared to Finland's 30%, though, so your net income wouldn't be that far away at around 20000€.
Guud job!!! 😉😉
1:54 nice shot of port of Riga and Vanšu brigde
If the train travels 200km/h. You could travel from Tallinn to Helsinki in 30minutes. You could live in Tallinn where the appartments are cheaper and work in Helsinki where you earn more money.
Of course the economy of Estonia would rise very quickly.
Estonian wage growth is twice as fast as in Finland. When this tunnel is completed, no Finn will buy alcohol in Estonia or an Estonian will work in Finland. Freight transport between the Antarctic Ocean (New Silk Road) and Western Europe is a major source of benefit.
@@rapator9270 Finland had its own period of "insane" growth (fastest in Europe) after WW2. I'm glad Estonia is doing well, but just because the economy is growing rapidly now doesn't mean it will continue to do so indefinitely once it starts to catch up with the rest of Western Europe like happened with Finland. There's plenty of reasons for Estonians to work in Finalnd and vice versa even if it's no longer to exploit cheap manual labor. And to be fair those jobs haven't been done by Estonians in a long time. Other Eastern Europeans often travel through Tallinn though.
@@poika22 Wage growth will certainly slow down and inflation will also slow down. I hinted that in 10-20 years people will have different reasons to travel. Chinese tourism to Tallinn through Helsinki Airport is growing rapidly for example ...
I can see that you tried to say ülemiste at 3:15😅
Greetings from Finland!
awesome!
