Serbia’s Plans for a Canal to The Mediterranean

  • Serbia is planning to construct a 17 billion dollar, 650 kilometer long waterway connecting the Danube River to the Mediterranean Sea. In southern Serbia, the sources of the Morava and Vardar rivers lie only 30 kilometers away from each other. The Morava flows north into the Danube and the Vardar flows south into the Mediterranean. For this reason, Serbia is considering constructing a massive waterway connecting the two rivers, and therefore the Danube and Mediterranean.

    The maker of this video doesn't really understand what the proposed canal is all about. The canal would not itself be a route for ships, (like the Panama Canal), but would be a barge canal. It would enable barges to travel between river ports on the Danube River (and it's connecting waterways) and Thessaloniki, where goods would be transhipped to or from sea-going ships. This would be an alternative route for cargoes to and from the Danube as against the existing route via Constantza. Thessaloniki would become a transhipment port for Danube traffic like Constantza is now. The Danube carries a significant amount of barge traffic, in both dry and liquid cargoes, which are carried more cheaply and in a more environmentally-friendly way than by road or rail.
    Apart from the possible use by local traffic within the areas through which it would pass, the only real advantage of the new route would be, as it says in the video, that ships carrying goods bound to or from Danube ports would be able to load / discharge in Thessaloniki instead of Constantza, thus avoiding passage of the Bosporus and Dardenelles and possibly saving two or three days voyage time. It is very unlikely that barges would be able to travel from Thessaloniki to, (say), Belgrade any quicker than from Constantza and it may even take longer because of the large number of locks and lifts involved.
    I am a big fan of water transport and would normally support any schemes for new canals, (like the one soon to be constructed in Northern France), but in this case I am dubious about whether the benefits would outweigh the construction costs. It is certainly feasible and some traffic would definitely use the route but probably not in sufficient quantity to justify the high cost.

      this canal will never take place,
      it is a dream from early 1900's
      also the dream of great Hydrologist, Jevjevich Vujica,
      but after 1960's is abandoned,
      As an hydrologist my shelf, I will explain the main reason why,
      Axios river and sea level of Thermaikos gulf, are in a very peculiar balance,
      So making Axios river a river canal, will turn all Central Makedonia, and a big part of Severna to a salty land,
      to secure from salty sea water enter thousands of km2, needs many 'works, like huge riversides maybe bigger than N Orlean Missiipi, and also a working system like Panama canal
      the project is abbandoned from 1960's as dangerous for turning fertile land poluted by salty sea water,

      This wpulf be wrong. Whenever the workers had partial ownership in Greece, it became stringhold of not allowing anyone yo enter or get a job, to wait and put their children as a job in when old enough, even if didnt know the job and with creating surplus artificial positions to put all chuldren in, no meritocracy or competitiveness, then companies became sh, t and lost money every day, and then the workers shouted the partial pwnership that they have with the state so that the state and tax payers pay the daily huge losses and daily feed everyone for decades with bankrupt and practically dead company.
      State ownership should be independent from workers ownership, these models create "worker-state vampires".

    As a Chinese, it was the first time I saw the title of Serbia’s plan to build this artificial canal in Chinese media a few years ago. However, no specific project content was seen at that time. I watched this video today to understand in detail what the canal project is all about. My first feeling is that this canal project is not big. With Chinese technical ability, management experience and funds, it is not too big. It can be said to be a medium-sized project. The technical difficulty and scale of the construction of this project are smaller than those currently under construction or completed in China.

If there is not enough water flow to keep lake filled they would have have pumps and piping, and reservoir lake to draw water from to fill the human lake up with when it gets low enough. I recommend watching the Panama canal videos and Erie water locks videos to get a good idea what it would look like and what works best for such a project. • @lewis2553
    @lewis2553 Před 2 lety

    Here's an idea. Suppose they start in the middle and excavate to full depth and build the section that is to connect the two rivers first. Then for the rest, they could allow small boat and ship traffic to go down one side of the river while they dredge and built a canal on the other side. They'd have to have two narrower canals separated by a strip of median, instead of one wide one. The dredged out material could possibly be used to help build the median. Maybe, this way, there'd be enough light shipping traffic to help pay for the construction. And as time passed and they got more and more of the shallow sections dredged out and built, ship sizes could increase, bringing in more and more revenue to speed the construction.

    $17B for all that seems EXTREMELY unlikely: I would guess 4 times that amount even without corruption and setbacks: $60B+. Compare to other major riverway or travel costs. Egypt is spending $14B to widen the Suez Canal, which is only 120km long and is already an existing structure. This appears to require massive rework on both rivers, plus the 30km canal added in the middle through the mountains (not cheap in itself), plus they claim adding subsidiary rivers, and slapping 5 dams on there, and having an insane 63 locks. Also, let's talk about having 63 locks for a second - there are 12 locks on the panama canal and their maintenance and support comprises most of the cost of passage through the canal: which is about $500k one-way. So 60+ locks is 5 times that cost, or around $2.5M in expected transit fees to maintain just the canal infrastructure between the rivers: let alone the near-constant dredging work that may be needed to maintain both rivers in working order - and I'm comparing to Panama that doesn't have initial costs to pay off: so let's double the transit fee for the first 60 years, to cover the build cost. Would each boat be expected to pay around $5M to pass through this artificial river system? Versus the ~free (thousands, not millions) to travel via Turkey/river?
    Seems to defeat the point. Especially when Europe already has plentiful highspeed rail lines, including Belgrade to Bar on the Greek coast directly south (296km). Maybe they need more flatbeds for sea-cans, maybe they need to twin some rail lines, but that would cost hundreds of millions, not tens of billions. This screams vanity project to me, maybe some Rhine Envy.

      Im to lazy to explain, but short answer is that montenegro is undeveloped, all coastal cities are from mediaeval times and rest of country looks like Scotland, its all highlands... even ottomans never completely conquered Montenegro cause that land was worthless and hard to get to, thats why Montenegro is separate, they know they are serbs, but they have clans same as in Scotland due to isolation bcs highlands...

      @draganmarkovic491 Před 3 lety +4

      Well that is partially true, Serbia does use port Bar in Montenegro but yeah Salonica in Greece is much more used. I believe that is because of couple of things, roads and infrastructure is better from Serbia to Greece than to Montenegro and building good roads and railway in Montenegro is challenging because Montenegro is very mountainous, second reason is that Salonica is much bigger port and third reason Greece has much bigger and more capable merchant fleet. I think that the simple answer is that it's cheaper.
