Croatia's Peljesac Bridge is a prerequisite to enter the borderless Schengen Area. In doing so, however, the project risks undermining Bosnia’s tiny coastline.

The height of the bridge is not questionable simply because there is no sea depth for large ships ... for safe passage. The only option would be for Croatia to dig the seabed in its waters ... but that will never happen LOL

I am Bosniak myself. As far I I can notice, the whole political and media crap about this bridge is total stupidity.
Neum is small town of 5.000 people. They ALL live by tourism and want to stay like that. Neum sea area IS NOT suitable for sea port. If there is ever gonna be a big sea port it would destroy natural habitat and tourism of that area, and nobody wants that. So, Neum WILL NEVER BE a sea port. Simple as that.
There is port of Ploce, as is mentioned in this video. Bosnia and Croatia signed a special treaty upon independence so Bosnia can use port of Ploce to transport goods from there to its teritory. Same as all people in Neum live from tourism, all people in Ploce live by revenues and transport of Bosnian goods in their port. So, port of Ploce is enough for sea transportation of Bosnian goods to Bosnia. Even Croatian membership did not change anything regarding this.
When it comes to transport of people from one part of Croatia to Dubrovnik region, it caused anxiety to both countries, because traffic jams and border checks were just impossible to handle. Neum is very small town, it has too many tourists who stay in town, plus people who are doing transit from Ploce area to Dubrovnik. It is just too much with 4 border checks in distance of 20 km.
Peljesac bridge will be good for Croatia to cpnnrct its two landmasses and for Neum and Bosnia to give themselves a break and invest in tourism in Neum more.
There is already ongoing construction just northern of Neum where Bosnian authorrities in Federation are biilding a tunnel that will shorten distance between town of Stolac and Neum. This will bring many many more Bosnian tourists to Neum. And with Peljesac bridge in function Neum will be able to enjoy full potential of tourism and not be overcrowded always by cars that are just transpassing to Dubrovnik.
Both, Bosnian and Croatian, politicians are just using this matter to promote their own agendas, same as they use anything else. Ordinary people in both countries are totally aware of potential of this bridge for both countries and do not waste their time arguing about nothing.

That mere 12 meter difference determines what long term future Bosnia has of having a significant port or not. Containerization dominates every country's future... which sucks. As a Civil engineering student with background in Bridge engineering, I can say that the height of the bridge (55m) is within its rights for the safe passage of freight under it the longest bridge in Europe (Øresund between Malmö and København, which I recently did a dissertation on) is 57m above sea level and has a sea lane under it (even if most are diverted around it) also I would assume that the 67m of the Golden Gate bridge is in line with Americans codes of practice rather than Eurocodes hence the discrepancy

As far as I know, the height of the bridge is not an issue but the shallow water underneath the highest point of the bridge. Yes, it's tall enough but ships can't sail it so the height becomes irrelevant and useless and that's the whole issue with this bridge.

Secondly, Bosnia and Herzegovina has FINALLY decided to connect its Adriatic coast with inner BiH with building a modern highway (you can even see it around 3:06) that will bypass Croatia. So, Croatia is bypassing BiH, and BiH is bypassing Croatia. For your information, the main connection between the BiH coast and the rest of BiH was through Croatia (you leave BiH, you enter Croatia, you leave Croatia and then you enter BiH again).
And finally, if you wonder: Bosnia and Croatia are super friends and something like cousin/brother countries. Let's not forget that is one side of the story: many people are absolutely against this, two years ago you had protests in central Bosnia organized by Croat and Bosniak kids who didn't want to see their school separated. And finally, relations between Bosniaks and Croats are not homogenous, they are good in one part of the country and not so good in another part of the country. Croatian guy here. Look the Pelješac Bridge project has no alternative. I'm not defending Croatian politicians, they are nepotistic, unskilled and often prone to corruption, but compared to Bosnian polticians, be they Bosniaks, Croats or Serbs, our guys are honest and hardworking people, Bosnian and Herzegovinian politicians represent probbably the most incompetent and corrupt rulling class in Europe, excluding places like Moldova, and since they insist on three different political stances, there is just no disscussion with them. If Bosnia and Herzegovina collapses at a certain point then that will make this entire project pointless, since Neum is populated almost exclusivley by Croats and is located in the Croat-mayjority part of B&H, so it would get annexed by Croatia, also before someone starts to rage I'm not calling for Bosnia to be dismembered, I'm just saying that that is a plausable reality for a country as dysfunctional as Bosnia. But, anyways ships will be able to pass below the bridge, eventough Neum isn't a large port, but connectig the exclaved territory of the old Republic of Ragusa with the rest of Croatia for us Croatians has no alternative.

Also if croatia does try to annex the territory it will lead to countless more bloodshed like in the 90's. The problem with that part of the world is that religion dictates loyalty! Bosnian ''planning'' means that there could be a port built within 50 years or so. If all three nationalities agree on it and rubber stamp it and money doesn't get stolen by corrupt politicians. Also Neum is a very small town and would need a lot of infrastructure and sea is shallow there as well. That means a lot of effort, time and money for that project. All three are a big problem in current day BiH.
So what? Croatia should accept current day situation or make one of the most expensive projects in it's history even more expensive because of a port which has 0.1% chance to be built?
And that is not mentioning that all shipping for BiH for the last 30 years was and is going through closeby port of Ploče which was recently expanded and modernized. So that new hipothetical port would have to compete with an established port which is right next door and has easier access to waterways. And even if it outcompeted it somehow that would mean Croatia has a useless port and no land connection between it's territories and BiH has a brand new credit for an expensive new port which makes shipping to BiH 0.1% cheaper if the money from that port doesn't get stolen by aformentioned corrupt politicans.
This ''problem'' is nothing but a way for Bosniak politicians to score cheap political points on ''they took our jobs'' rhetoric.

BiH susceptibility expand the port, terraform's the area, deepens the seabed, significantly improves the public infrastructure for such a port. Then what? Last time I checked cargo ships aren't 55m tall. The only ship that wouldn't be able to visit such a port would be a big cruise ship, and let's be honest, such a enormous ship would never visit such small town. Let's take another example, Koper, which has the biggest port here. Cruise ships visit it, because It's an interesting town/location with easy accessible in a short range other towns/locations for activities. Now let's take a look at Neum. I'm not saying that It's not interesting, but It's not interesting enough, nor it doesn't have other easy accessible sights/towns in the vicinity for such a large amount of people. Sure, they could travel inwards BiH to access more interesting sights, but that not the point of q cruise ship. With a cruise ship you want to offer your guests as much interesting sights in the vicinity as you possibly can, so that the guests has a higher chance of using their services again in the future, as they've now seen that you offer travel plans to lots of interesting places, meaning more profits for the cruse line.

I live in this area. The idea of Bosnia being "landlocked" is apsurd. First of all there isn't a port of any kind for commerce in Neum. Even if they were to make one (which is unlikely), the bridge is huge and wouldn't be a problem for any kind of ships to pass beneath it, more of a limiting factor would be the depth of the sea in that area rather than the bridge. The only real downside for Bosnia by building a bridge is less people will pass trough Neum region thus reducing people spending some money there and less people being suspected to their customs etc. So yeah it's jealousy rather than anything else. Having to pass trough two border just to go from one part of the country to the other is difficult and having a bridge is benifical to gorwth of the southern region.

@@scottwarthin1528 As a fellow Serb from the northern part of Bosnia and a student of political sciences - we don't actually care about economic growth and/or development of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We care about our half of it, the Republic of Srpska. Right now, Republic of Srpska (literally: Serb Republic) is as much dependent on Serbia, as it is on federal government in Sarajevo - maybe even more dependent on Serbia at the moment. Serbs and Croats couldn't be annexed into their mother states due to foreign intervention of mainly NATO states with USA as it's spearhead, ending forced into cohabitation in some (con)federal inorganic state with muslim relative majority. We, and Croats too, perceive Serbia and Croatia respectively as our states. Croatian cantons in western and southern parts of Federation are interested in their own affairs with benefit of Croats in mind, and we in Republic of Srpska do pretty much the same. To be completely honest, we do want growth, development and peace for everyone - but never at the expense of our own people. We do not perceive the federal government in Sarajevo as our own, and the weaker its grip on us is, the merrier we are. Bosnia is a dysfunctional shithole not because of the war and God knows what - it is what it is because we are continually making it that way. And as long this forced limbo of cohabitation is enforced, I personally don't foresee any major prosperity for any of three constituent ethnic groups within Bosnia. Поздрав!

@Picka Timaterina Not really. In Croatia over 90% population is croatian. In B&H the situation is different. As you know there are 3 main ethnicities (Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks/muslims) that make up over 90% of the population and have their representatives in the parliament and presidency and none of those 3 parties really wants the country to be the way it is. Serbs would like to join serbia, bosniaks want the country to be centralistic and croats want more autonomy and even possibly unite with croatia.
My point is that its kinda ironic that the part of B&H where Croats live and would like to even be a part of croatia someday is spliting Croatia itself in two.

      1) not only don't you know how to make arguments without going off topic, but apparently you also forgot how to read properly. I NEVER said that Croats were the first people ever on the balkans. I specifically said they were there centuries before anyone thought about Bosnia as a country and that's a historic fact so you didn't prove anything XD
      2) Did serbs want to ethnically cleanse a land they've been living in for a long time? Yes, absolutely. Those serbs, who're genetically a mix of Serbs and Vlachs from Kosovo who also mixed with the natives came to the Croatian area 5 centuries ago fleeing from the ottomans and that's OK. What's NOT ok is to expell people who were already there which WAS the goal of the establishment of the serbian krajina. I've read about Croatian diaspora for instance and there is a Croatian diaspora in Austria and one in Romania which have been living in those lands also for the last 500 years, but they definitely did not try do what serbs did in Croatia, instead they respect the fact that they're still in foreign land.
      3) what Croats did in B&H was try to establish their own Republic even though it shouldn't have happened - I never said it was OK - there I agree, but they didn't do nearly enough if you look at the fact that the city of Mostar, the biggest one on that territory, has a population where 45% of it is Muslim.
      4) I think YOU'RE stupid, especially because just like one can expect from a true balkan boy with that backwards, regressive, stupid balkan mentality, right away you started talking about history and politics on a comment that was simply meant to be a joke so please save yourself from wasting any more of your time and energy and stop responding, I've got better stuff to do than debate anyway.

If you do not believe me ask US Navy. Once they visited Bosnia with a fregate. That is not realy big ship. About 110m in length. Long story short when wind pick up during the night they needed assistance of two tug boats from Port of Ploče to assist them to exit to open sea. Simply put like this. There is not enough Bosnian sea for a big boat to maneuvers around. That is the reason port of Ploče was build after second world war. Port of Ploče was build as a port for Bosnia and Hercegovina. The EU funds most transportation projects (well, it does it less and less with road infrastructure because of environmental reasons, but it still funds countries stablishing its core network). Yet, it doesn't propose the projects for the most part (except for trans-european corridors agreed between all members, that still are mostly proposed by the countries of the regions for each of its sections).
On regular projects, it is the countries which have to make the move: write the project and submit it for funding (which is never a full funding). Italy didn't submit nor doesn't have concrete plans of a bridge to Sicily. While Croatia did it here. It would simply take for Italy to submit a project for the bridge for it to be funded, particularly taking into consideration it is on a region that is under the EU avarege on economic development. But it depends on the will of the regional/national governments, not the EU.

@@josiprakovac3284 yes I live in J&K and it's sad to hear that but everyday one or two of our soldiers are dying due to continuous ceasefire violations by Pakistan. It's just sad that so much young blood is being spilled. I am sorry for your loss. I guess he might have fought in kargil war. It was one of the most cowardly acts done by any nation.

Although this video is full of inaccuracies and misleading far-fetched conclusions that have very little in common to the facts.
For instance how exactly is Croatia gonna "block" Bosnia-herzegovina by building bridge with ceiling of 55 meters above sea-level and five 250 meters wide passages, something that is extremely large for all Adriatic region let alone tiny and very shallow waters Neum bay?!
Author is giving false impression as if Croatia is building another Hoover dam, not the bridge with large passages intended for maritime traffic!
Also, he doesn't mention that Croatia and BiH have conducted negotiations for over 10 years and agreed upon bridge construction details!
Also, Croatia is building this bridge on undeniably it's own territory including internal waters!
There are also some other issues.

it's really amazing knowing the geopolitical side of things. I saw one video about the same bridge praised about how massive the project is and it's significance in physically uniting a country and then this video.

I have always thought that Bosnian citizens of the Catholic faith live in the town of Neum, among other religions. However, you say that Croats live there. Hmm interesting ?! I'm totally confused. Or you need learn something dude!

@@Ffhh391 Croats do live in Neum, and in entirety of western Herzegovina, they are of Croatian origin, they identify themselves as Croats, in all sports they celebrate Croatia's win, and don't care at all about Bosnian games, etc etc...
The reason why BiH is so confusing is because it isn't a normal country as most other countries (Italians live in Italy, Germans in Germany, Russians in Russia...), but rather it is a mix of 3 peoples (Croats, Serbs, and muslims called "Bosniaks") and artificially drawn border where nobody is happy with the solution.
      Why this way in particular?
Because in 1995, the US and EU wouldn't allow fully muslim country in the heart of Europe, so they draw borders to include Croats and Serbs into the mix so that everybody in this "country" remains angry and poor. (This is the simplest possible explanation of the situation)

"The flow of goods and cargo will be altered". As a local, I must point out that there is literally 0 traffic there right now, the "port" of Neum is too shallow to even receive cruise ships anyway and it would take years to alter the sea floor to allow such ships to dock. Furthermore, the bridge was designed with the potential traffic in mind (Bosnia and Herzegovina used commercial freight ships as an argument to skyrocket the height of the bridge, boosting up the price of the bridge).
The truth is a little bit more political. Current arangement allows Bosnia to use the port of Ploce because they are not making a hassle at Neum with border checks. With the bridge being constructed they are losing their leverage and will probably have to start paying fairly for their use of a significant portion of the Ploce harbour.
