China’s Proposal for a Bohai Strait Tunnel

  • China is considering constructing a $45 billion tunnel across the Bohai strait, connecting the cities of Dalian and Yantai in northeast China. The mega-project would be the longest undersea connection ever, drastically transforming the regional economies and nationwide transportation routes. It comes with many benefits but also has many issues including cost, feasibility and environmental effects. The Chinese government started the project in 2014, but has faced many delays. As of 2020, it is unsure whether China is still actively pursuing the proposal.

China’s engineering marvels are under appreciated. For example, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is an insane network connecting the metropolises on both sides of the Pearl River delta which is home to over 100 million.

When the Channel Tunnel was built it was thought the tunnel would kill the Ferry Traffic. IT DID'NT! The ferries tried very hard to keep customers by becoming a mini cruise, effectively a place to rest on a long journey. Yes you can catch the Literal Train and be through the Tunnel in 30 Minutes. The last time I took the ferries across the channel 8 years ago it was PACKED with Holiday Makers and the Usual Wagon Drivers. That SLOWNESS as you call it becomes and advantage as drivers are still moving but resting. That's the reason I took the ferry. Also I forgot the Mutant Cod I had on my Lunch Plate. Delicious!! ;)

I lived in Qingdao for several years. The Dalien train ferry was the only way to get to the other side of the Bohai sea except for flying. I hope this will be constructed! It will serve not only as a key transportation link for China, but will push the frontier of what is possible in other regions of the world. For example, a Japan-Korea tunnel would be of similar length. Philippines and Indonesia could start thinking about linking their major islands together via rail tunnels. In the future, there can even be tunnels under the Bab al- Mandab Strait or under the Strait of Hormuz. The possibilities are endless.

@ Dr. Woozie : "insane"? i am just more interested in your choosing this adjective... what's really insane and rediculous is ordinary citizens' passenger cars (99% out of total) are not allowed to travel on this multi-billion Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge. Only a handful priviledged cadres' with special licenses can, totally defeating the purpose of the bridge. Whilst one can drive without hinderance between US-Canada or Singapore-Malaysia etc... it is absulotely absurd under so called 1 country 2 system, 99% hong kong cars can not cross borders into mainland china and v.v. WTF?!!!!
