Campari owns Appleton as well. These casks didn't cost them anything outside of their original procurement. This pricing is getting out of hand regardless of how good it is.
I agree that the pricing is out of hand, but there's still a production cost of selecting the barrels, shipping them to Kentucky, transferring the bourbon to the rum barrels, etc. Just saying, it's not "free"
@@andrewnesbitt2523 ok I'll give you that. Greatly reduced, minimal cost. I don't buy the story about them being "specially selected" though. American whiskey is 90% lore/marketing and 10% what's bottled in 2023.
There is lost revenue if they typically sell off the rum barrels to others for secondary finishing.

I love a good rum finish, but the price increase on this one on top of a market saturated with other rum finished alternatives this year's was a pass for me. If they maybe finished something with a little higher age statement of maybe like 12-13 years it would would be an easier pill to swallow. If I saw this in a bar though I would try a pour for maybe like 20-25 bucks though just to say I have tried it.
Passed it up at $300. I just couldn’t justify it. Bought a 9+ year RRSB pick for $70 instead. I can’t believe the price. I’m out of the MK loop. They’ve priced me out. I bought last year’s for $200 and that was pushing it, but it was excellent at least. Thanks Jason for the honest assessment!

Cracked mine last week with a cigar and it was great. Well said on the finish. It is long and coats your mouth. $275 is a little high but like you said its the best rum finished bourbon I've had. Cheers

As a rum-finished-rye fan, I'd have hoped they used older WT rye in this release instead. Regardless, "crushable" at $275 isn't quite what I want to hear 😅.

Agreed on paper, $275 seems high for a 10 year bourbon, even finished, not barrel proof, blah blah. But I'd still like to try it. If nothing else, you finally convinced me to sign up and try ZBiotics. Cheers!
Thanks for the review, Jason. I hope I can score a bottle. I was a bit turned off when I heard they bumped it up to $275 but then I saw Fred's review of the William Who Knew Larue for 5 bills and I realized this is a relative bargain. Where's my goddamn time machine?!
I’d love to get a bottle but with this price no. I’m going to say that the secondary market will have a field day with this on. Luckily I still have all the other affordable options from WT. this sounds really great but again it’s way out of what I’m willing to pay for alcohol regardless of how good it is. Great job here and you are a lucky man.. Enjoy!!
Yes that zebionics works amazing I have went to weddings recently handed them to my buddies and also use them at bachelor party when you know what's going to happen lol it's nice to be ready for it because the day after are always tough

Typically not a rum finished fan...In my experience, rum casks are hard to extract flavors out of so when theres noticeable rum flavors, i get suspicous haha. Need to try this one
I love the idea of this (ie high quality rum-cask finished bourbon), but man, $275 is a lot--and that's assuming you can even find it at that price and not a jacked-up secondary price. Hopefully I'll be able to try it at a whiskey bar at least.
I bought two WTMK 17's off the shelf at Giant Eagle. Those were the days...
Hard to pass on most of the Master's Keeps, and the Rum finish tends to be "hit and miss" for me. If I find it near MSRP, I'll be a buyer, just won't grab anything else for a week or 2. ;o) And thank you for your recommendation on ZBiotics...I have used about 12 of them so far, giving for friends as well as using myself, and they work like magic! Super easy and simple, and reasonable price!
Sounds good, but I just got Russell’s Reserve 13 and Stagg 23A for less than $275 total. 🥃

At 275, I’d imagine we’ll see it on shelves in Texas for awhile. No mention on how total bottles though. We still see this year’s release by Orphan Barrel weeks after it was released at 200ish.

Sounds interesting. I'd like to try this Master Keep release, but I won't be hunting this rum finished whiskey due to the price. What is worth buying is Zbiotics! Zbiotics works best when you actually have it to take.

Everyone saying $275 is a hard no.. just wait until you see it in person at retail. It’s going to be super hard to walk away from it especially, if you’re a die hard turkey fan. I don’t think I could walk away just the FOMO. I probably should get a pour at a bar somewhere first.
Barrel has 16 year old rum finished bourbons and whiskeys. Mine were around $110. No Dickel either.
At the end of the day, I love rum too and I can't say no to Turkey either.

I’ll stick with the Bardstown four square Rum finish and save a hundred.
Wouldn’t even be tempted at $200. On a tangent, if you’re a rum person and have some quality rum you are enjoying, try a little sip of a mid level 10 year oldish bourbon just after. The variety of flavors you’ll get is amazing.
Actually you can just add a drip of the rum to your bourbon!
I have been using zbiotics for several months now . Whether its a bourbon tasting event with family members or friends or a summer BBQ I always use zbiotics so the next day isn't slow but much more of a normal day. I just joined their subscription program to enjoy the savings and make sure it is available when I want to use it . Cheers !
Jason - how would you rank this on your Masters Keep list? I've started looking to get a Masters Keep shelf added to my collection and guessing this would be easier to source at the moment. Does it belong on the shelf?

I’m glad it’s good but I have to say such a short finish time also doesn’t help justify the price it’s way way overpriced for what it is this is giving me WTMK one vibes haha
I was bummed when I couldn't get Unforgotten last year since I've owned all the previous Master's Keeps. But after I tried a sample, I felt more at ease with missing out. Not a fan of the rums I've tried, and haven't had a rum finish I like, so my interest in this release was already low. Then the press release came with the price bump and I made like Hank in Breaking Bad, "not falling for it buddy, I fold."
Also to my surprise, ZBiotics actually does seem to help. Tried it for the first time at the Orlando Whiskey Festival in March (on St. Patrick's Day nonetheless), so we had plenty to indulge. Still felt hungover the following morning, but I felt like I could at least function.
What would you rather buy, Masters Keep Voyage or Russell’s 13?

I balked a bunch at the $175 bottles but eventually/reluctantly grabbed Cornerstone rye. Based on that experience, this one's definitely gonna be a "no" for me, dawg.

Yes you can buy 10 year old Turkey for under $100, but you'll always be able too. Master's Keep are once and never again, BUT, yeah I don't see me spending $275 on it. Speaking of crushable, I opened my bottle of Woodford Historic Barrel Entry Proof Friday night playing cornhole after the gang got together for crabs and OMG, I thought my Homie and I were gonna kill the bottle, but thank goodness we came to our senses and backed off.
I love WT, but they are pushing it on the price points. I have to credit their Single Rickhouse pricing with killing the secondary market and allowing me to buy multiples.
Inevitably, I will buy one. That may be it for me for the series if they keep pressing their luck. Ironically, WTMK sat for years because they really pushed the pricing. Then the 17 year BiB came along. They could end up in the penalty box again.

Any recommendations for rums to sip on OTHER THAN Foursquare?
Depends on what you are into… if you want a similar profile, Mount Gay is solid, especially the XO. I’d also recommend looking into El Dorado. The 12yr is a good starting point, then the 15, 21, single stills, etc. Appleton 12 Rare Casks is easily available at my local Total Wine and is a great sipper. If you are looking for some thing with extra history, Pusser’s British Navy rum blue, black, or 15yr are all solid choices. Stay away from sugared nonsense like Zacapa. Fat Rum Pirate and Rumratings are great resources to research before you buy. Cheers!
Also I should add that if you are into Foursquare like me, they make several other rums, so you don’t have to hunt the ECSs releases all the time. Doorly’s, R.L. Seale 10yr/12yr, Old Brigand, and Probitas are fantastic Foursquare offerings that should be easy to find if you have a Total Wine near you and are relatively inexpensive.
I'm likely in the minority, but I'm all in. 🤷♂️ Japan usually receives Master's Keeps about six months after their initial stateside release and will be excited to add this to the others. Kanpai, friends.
When are they gonna get serious and stop calling this bourbon? It’s whisky. There are some good whiskys out there that are finished, but most of them are not great. Nulu is a prime example of finishing whisky to hide just how bad it is. I was at Willett in May to pick a barrel and was lucky enough to get a fantastic 10yo bourbon. I was going to buy two at $350, but now with a hard pass on the WYMK, I’ll get three. Thanks Jason for making that decision easier 😂

Admittedly not a fan of rum cask because I just feel it gets too sweet. However, I can only look forward to the bubble bursting somewhat on these "limited" offerings..

I'm not giving them a pass on sourcing expensive rum barrels when Campari owns both companies. They most likely paid a dollar a piece for those barrels if anything.
Won't find it in the UK, but at circa £250 for a 10 yo at CS ish that is way too much, plenty of Scotches and Irish in my market that are better value. If you buy it then I hope you enjoy! Cheers
It’ll be way more than that if it ever made it here. Despite the bourbon tariff being removed in June last year this has not been passed onto us.

I like the 2022 Masters Keep but I'll pass due to the price and put that $200 in my pocket - maybe save it for a bottle of Redbreast 27 '-)

I'm guessing pricing boubon is not a easy game to play as prices keep going up and up, especially secondary prices for rare and hard to get boubon/rye whiskeys. Sure the distillers want to make as much as they can (it's the American way!). I guessing it galls the distillers to see people (the hated secondary sellers) sell their bourbon/rye for 2 to 3 or more times their retail price. Of course the distillers rightfully thinks " if my boubon is selling on secondary for 2/3 times my retail price "we are pricing our product to low".
( l didn't sip bourbon in the 2000's but it must of been a grand, affordable time for lovers of great boubon).
Zbiotics is wonderful. Wish i could find a bottle of the Voyage release, but ill stick to pregaming with Zbiotics when i drink available releases.

Not everybody likes scotch. So you can't really compare the two. 🤷♂️
