Well, there's not much of the Pennsylvania section of the Appalachian Trail left for us after this hike... I think I only have a little over 40 miles in 3 sections left to do. This trip had all kinds of weather: tornado watches, thunder storms, high humidity, blazing sun and high temps. The thermo drop recorded a high of 106 in direct sunlight.... but I think it was at least in the low 90's. So...

Good video-Nice camera work, background music, good commentary from an outdoorsman point of view. I hope you reach your state park goal(s) …
My late father took me there as a kid like 55 years ago. There were stumps, but wide open for the most part.
what time of the year is this? and what was the temps like?
i could be wrong but think it is Ashfield not Ashland nice video
200 milliamp hours
Spent a good part of my childhood in the late 50’s and early 60’s up and down this creek. I remember slipping and rolling down one of the hills. We would drink right out of the stream on a hot summer day. There was a dam at Fourth St. that created a nice fishing hole. We would catch bullheads, think they were actually cat fish, ugly but good eating. Past Fourth St. It would go partially under ground ending finally in the Lackawanna River.
I know this was a year ago, but please do a review on products they way they are meant to be used. These meals were meant to be cooked for 20 minutes on the stove, not tossed with hot water like freeze dried food. The website clearly states that this is not a high calorie food meant for strenuous activity. It's sheerly for survival. Not a fair review.
Hi Kurt. Thanks for this video. I'm hoping to do Caledonia State Park to Duncannon in the Spring (2025), and this gives me an idea of what I will see in the area you hiked.
Sounds like you are making progress on your hikes on the AT. This looked like a nice section and only a little bit of rocks.
I really want to do the Appalachian Trail, not all at once, I'm too damn old for that crap and depending on who's reviews are accurate I might skip a few sections, but that's a big part of my plans for after (hopefully) retiring in 2030, of course that's assuming the world doesn't end before that. Though even if it does I might still hike it, I've been promised nuclear Armageddon for over 50 years, sorry if I don't get too panicked over the newest "whatever"
I’m currently going through that battery issue where it is automatically shutting off. Will keep posted to what Nebo does about this situation.
A nice quick one this was a really nice section. Trail maintenance was great way to go Mountain Club of Maryland.
A little bit closer to completion! Yay for the new bridge. Nice job, Mountain Club of Maryland.
Make bigger holes! If the red camp is too heavy for you then just work out more!! Lol
8 minutes that's not bad, pretty fair. Takes about that long in my steel pot on my stove burner at home
It's not pronounced like Rio de Janeiro. It's an "I" sound not an "E" sound. Many make that mistake. Enjoy the lake.
How long did this hike to you (up and down)?
It took us about 5 1/2 hours. We were all injured in one way or another and we stopped a lot.
Thanks for the quick reply. Going to try it in the fall. Great video
I hate hiking in Summer... But I love being outdoors! It's a love hate relationship... LOL
The heat I don't mind so much, but when that humidity starts creeping to the high 80% area... that's rough
I love that you have done sections of the AT over time! You want to enjoy it, but you are still walking all those steps of the PA section!
I've done sections in VA, PA, NJ, NY & VT so far, but I only have about 41 miles left to do in PA.
Awesome trail.
It was a nice section... would have been a little nicer if it wasn't so hot though lol
I can definitely see why water had to be a priority. Super cool hike man!
With humidity that high when it's in the 90's water is all you're really concerned with. My little thermometer registered 106 in direct sunlight.
🥵🥵
Glad we started day 2 early
Nice Video.
Thank you!
Yeah, it's dry out there. I did the Gerard Trail about a week ago, and it's a good thing they have water at the shelters, because I never knew how far the next water would be. Ooh, that's a nice view there at 13:31. A pizza stop on a section hike! Nothin' wrong with that. And I assume there was some AC in there, too.
We got lucky, there was more water than we thought... just not at the shelters. The Gerard Trail is pretty cool and those shelter set-ups are fantastic. Did you tent or use one of the shelters? That was probably the best view along that section. Ironically... there was no AC in the pizza place lol
@@KurtZitzelman I stayed in the shelters. And as you know, they have the bear boxes there, too, so without having to carry my tent or canister, I saved 3-and-a-half pounds, which was nice.
I'm torrenting your video
Last weekend, during the heat wave, my wife and I took our truck camper to Cooks Forest SP and did a small loop hike... it was a little cooler in the tree cover than at our campsite but either way,, did like 2 miles and went back to an air conditioned rv for the best 45 minute power nap of my life. No way I'd put that on youtube tho 😂 I got so sick of making hiking video's for this reason.
It's like they say, hike your own hike. In the video the commenter complained about we stopped at not 1 but 2 air conditioned restaurants that were along the trail... showed them both lol Everyone will have their own ideas about how anything should be done, and that's perfectly fine. As long as what you're doing isn't hurting anyone else you should do what makes you happy. Don't let the narrow-mindedness of some keyboard warrior stop you from doing what you want to do.
Very cool man. That waterfall hole was awesome!
Imagine using that as your main water source?
Bro i went fishing with Ryan on his channel in winter, and i have never seen ANYONE set up a home base and get a fire going as fast as he did. i had finished rigging my rod and making a couple cast and bro has water boiling....
Danny Angler
Ryan is definitely the firemaster, he knows all the secrets
Good stuff right here man. Honored to be on with you.
PS...that music is super cool.
Thanks for being on Ryan. I really like doing these interview/guest host style episodes.
Interesting vid Kurt! I was in central KY about a month ago on a ham radio trip activating National Parks. I didn't think of stopping here. Maybe next time through! Thanks as always!!!
We just kinda detoured here, Panda is really good at finding these spots along the way. Pretty interesting, I'm glad we stopped.
I remember stopping by there many, many years ago and taking pictures of that building and the spring. Seems like no one else was there that day and that building was not open. So I had no idea that cabin was in there! Now I've seen it. Thanks!
Oh cool, glad to give you a look at the interior!
This looks like a great place to stop on your way home. I was surprised how small the cabin was. I also like how you pointed out that inscription on the building.
I didn't get it in the video, but above that inscription was the following: "Here over the log cabin where Abraham Lincoln was born destined to preserve the union and to free the slave. A grateful people have dedicated this memorial to unity, peace and brotherhood among these states."
Our company is building a 3000 condo plex for the rich outside of there. That place will be packed soon.
I watched that video and remember how irritated you were. I didn't blame you!
I could see if the comment was about bailing out, or my attitude after not sleeping but to be mad about where we parked, the direction we traveled and us joking around was ridiculous.
Loved this Kurt!
Thanks Darcy!
In an older video you stated when a comment is posted and even if deleted you can still see it. This was a lesson you taught me, and I think about it from time to time and certainly when I am leaving a comment that can be taken the wrong way even if it is intended in a good way. I think it's great you did a podcast about this. In the hiking community we all should support each other (as stated by you). I did chuckle a bit that someone could get angry over a Kurt Zitzelman hike.
lol I know right? Plus it was a hike with Panda and we just goof around and laugh the entire time when we hike. How can you get mad at that? I learned long ago with text messages that sarcasm and intentions rarely come through the intended way when read by the recipient.
Any information on where to park/launch my kayak here? Read elsewhere that the access road is three miles long and gravel, which leads me to believe that it is exactly the kind of location I'm looking for😊
You heard correctly. Parking is at the end of Brady's Lake Rd (no surprise) which is off of RT. 940 approximately 6.5 miles west of I380 (Google Maps coords 41.162456, -75.528529) I also just added a Google Maps link to the parking lot in the Video Description.
I agree with you 100%. I feel your pain with comments like this. I get them from time to time. I can’t fathom why someone would be so critical especially about someone they don’t know. Like what’s the point. Why does it bother them so much. To me I don’t care to much what other people do. I follow the blazes and the trip ends up being the way it is. I do it the way I want at the time. But I don’t understand why people are so angry that they comment like they do. Doesn’t make sense to me so I do t let it bother me. Keep doing what you are doing because you are doing great. 👍
Dan I am extremely surprised you get this. Much like Kurt you are not an opinionated person. Zero reason to leave this type of comment. Your trips with Dakota are legendary in the PA hiking community!
Thanks Dan. I don't let this stuff bother me either, I figured this might help others who run into this bot online in person. 99% of comments I get are very positive that's what I focus on.
Well said❤
Thank you!
Get em Kurt!
😂 hey we've got to set up a time for your interview.
@@KurtZitzelman yeah man let's do it
Nice to see what the above ground trails look like here. We visited, but only had time to tour the cave.
We missed all the cave tours in the park but did visit Onyx Cave just outside the park, that was pretty cool. If it wasn't for the rain we would have seen more of the trails but it was a great time regardless.
Thank you for your honest review. It's good to hear a real honest review rather than seeing gear reviewers pretending to be unbiased after doing a review deal with the manufacturer prior to the broadcast.
Even when a company wants to send me a product for review I'll only do it if it's an honest review. Everything has it's good and bad, it's important to point out both.
Wish I would have watched this before I bought it..thanks man
Me too lol
Great idea. Unable to hike at the moment. All the best😊
Hope you can get out soon!
Thank you.😊
You're welcome 😊

Wow great efforts ❤ from India
Thank you so much 😀
Great episode Kurt 👊🏻
Thanks man
Turtle swerving while driving, 2 species. I wonder if I should pull over and move the turtles off the road. (edit species) snapping turtles and something else... not a painted, but not a box turtle.
In most areas turtles and tortoises are protected species and should only be moved if they are in danger and then only in the direction they were traveling (or pointed). Snapping turtles an be really dangerous if big enough, they can easily bite off a finger and possibly a hand if large enough.
This episode made me think of a recent hike. When I did the north loop of Pichot I was about 3/4 of the way through and had a bit of a climb. As I neared the top, I saw a full-grown deer. I didn't see if it was a doe or buck, I was more scared because of its size and proximity to me. Got about 100 yards away and as I put my trekking pole down the smallest dear popped up from under a brush pile. It was not injured, and it ran towards the other deer. But I did think, what if I had injured the deer, what would I have done. Very interesting topic!! I think human emotion takes over when seeing a helpless animal.
You might be surprised how often you've probably walked right past a baby animal... or full grown for that matter and never noticed. I do believe they can sense intention from people though. The deer I saw last week clearly realized I was no threat and was giving her space. Otherwise she might have walked the other direction or just plopped down where she was until I left.
