Trying Evapo-rust On The 280z's Spare Tire Well And A Roadtrip!
I wanted to try Evapo-rust on the 280z's rusty spare wheel well to see if it can be saved. Unfortunately there was way more rust in that area than it first seemed. I'm not sure how to proceed with that just yet so Lila and I decided to drive 14 hours to pick up a new roof for the Datsun. That should save me a ton of time!

    Thank you for taking us on your journey. I haven't done anything close to what you have done, but could you just get rid of the entire wheel well? Will the ride height remain the same? What do you think, does it instead take too much time and work to design and manufacture some kind of diffuser, or a slightly rising floor at least there. Does that suit the style at all?

    • @BLOKgarage

    I ended up using a few gals of evaporust for random stuff around the car like the seat brackets and stuff its great if you have a big ol storage bucket that's wide and shallow I kept it around for like 5 months and just kept using it, I still did have to clean stuff with a strip disk but you know the inside has been hit as well

    How much is a replacement wheel well? I think for me that would determine if I bought one or patched it. I had good experience with Evaporust, but I used it on body mounts and hardware, mostly. That roof skin was a lucky find! I did a roof replacement on my old S10 pickup (It came cut for a convertible top conversion) and I cut the outer sheet metal away so I could weld the inner pieces together, and then weld tthe outer sheet metal back on over it. This gave me 3 weld points that were staggered....but the rear wall was warped and I ended up finding a deal on a new cab, so I can't tell you how it was structurally.

    • @BLOKgarage
      @BLOKgarage Před dnem

      Replacement would be best. Unfortunately I can't find a company that sells repop 280z style wheel well (they all are the 240z style) and haven't found a good used that I would want to pick up.

    • @robertdavis386
      @robertdavis386 Před 2 dny

      Yeah, I was thinking of a complete replacement too. Even a used one (rust free) from a donor car would save a LOT of time over trying to patch up cancerous skin. It's a shame the trunk from the same 240z didn't come home with the roof.

    • @BLOKgarage
      @BLOKgarage Před dnem

      I looked at that as an option. Problem is, it's a 240z style replacement (they say it fits 240z-280z and while its technically true they aren't the same). The 280z spare tire well is different, its shallower to allow for a large gas tank. The OEM gas tank on the 280z won't fit with the 240z style well so then I would have to find a 240z gas tank. I couldn't find anyone selling an actual 280z replacement panel.

      I actually picked some of the rustoleum gel up after trying the evaporust. Haven't used it yet though. From what I see, the rustoleum is an acid so it can effect the metal while the evaporust is not.

There are probably a lot of similarities that also apply to the z. Brother, Ospho by Skyco is your friend. It will take that rust right up. Better for dipping, at least that's what I use it for, however applying it on with a brush is good too. Leave it on over night, wash with WD40. It will turn that rust to gunmetal gray. youtube Kris Clark , he has a video on this stuff. It really is amazing, so give it a shot! Also, don't remove the undercoating under the car if its good. According to Wick Humble, author of the excellent book 'How to restore your Datsun Zcar', he says to leave the undercoating alone on there if there is no evidence of cancer and rot, and to only repair and replace the areas that have the rust damage. And he also states that Nissan put the undercoat on there more for the purposes of sound insulation and not for rust. And the rust that you removed from the spare tire area had near perfect metal underneath, that's pretty good to last for over 40 years. It did its job well even it was for another purpose. Also, Surface Shield is excellent to apply to areas underneath. Great project Z. Keep it up! 💯

    • @BLOKgarage
      @BLOKgarage Před 2 dny

      Some others mentioned Ospho too. I found the Evaporust locally after people mentioned it so figured I'd try that. I'll probably pick up so Ospho though and try that. I keep going back and forth on the undercoating. My original plan was to leave it if it looked good but then I thought it would be best to remove it in case there's rust hidden. However, with how the underside of the spare tire well looked compared to the top side, that's a good indicator of how well it worked.

    • @benjaminnielsen4288
      @benjaminnielsen4288 Před dnem

      @@BLOKgarage Agreed. Plus, it seems that the aftermarket cheapo rubberized undercoating does tend to let moisture get up underneath of it and the rust starts spreading. Trial and error I suppose. I'll be following more of your videos. I just picked up yet another Z, this time 77. Evaporust is good for dipping rusty parts. You need a rust converter for any remaining rust after you wire brushed......

    • @BLOKgarage
      @BLOKgarage Před 2 dny

      I see that now. I didn't realize it when I picked it up. I saw some videos of guys soaking rags in it to keep it wet on panels and seemed to work good, but for less rust than I found. I also didn't think there would be holes so....

  • @PieterKuijk
    @PieterKuijk Před 2 dny

    Nice video again! Liked the road trip part❤. Is it possible to find a whole new wheel well? Shaping the well seems challenging. As for the roof skin, I would keep it as much factory as possible. Not having a sunroof luckily gives you back some rigidity though. In the C pillar there is a seam where the roof skin is welded. On old cars it is filled with lead. Jared Pink of Questionable Garage recently featured it in a video of his '70 sport satellite project. You should check that out. Good luck!

    • @BLOKgarage

  • @T3glider
    @T3glider Před 7 dny

    When adjusting panel gaps, you can make a cut close to the edge and shift the edge over, then weld up the cut, rather than adding a bead to the edge.

    • @T3glider
      @T3glider Před 6 dny

      @@BLOKgarage Depends on how much you had to shift the edge. If it is too wide, then no. Something else to try then is the old trick of welding a coat hanger wire on the edge. It would fill faster and put less heat in the panel than the several passes you made.

      I have more bracing welded in the car plus the way stronger frame rails. I don't think the body flexed at all. The door bars were really just there while I was doing the floor pans and frame rails and I've just kept them in.

    I could absolutely tell how frustrating this one was. Wheel wells and curves on fenders are very difficult. Good work not getting so frustrated that you just did a poor job. I think it looks good. I would also cut out a much larger piece and find ways to hide seams of the welds on flat surfaces versus curves (I tried to do this on my car, but I did not take enough time to get it perfect and I can still see my seams). As for stripping the car, I would try chemical on a small area and see how it lifts, if it works do that, if not move to abrasives. If you try to use abrasive after chemicals it gunk's up tools and it even more gross to deal with. Good work man

      Any recommendation of brand for chemical stripping?

      @@BLOKgarage no I used several, my advice would be to work on small areas and follow the directs to the T. It seemed like the larger areas I tried, the less consistent results I got. Your mileage may vary. I also never stripped an entire car, but just smaller sections at a time.

    After watch comment. I’m learning from you. I think what I’ve learned is any time I can make the cuts a straight line is best, parallel to the body lines. So I only have to line up one angle/plane. Vs a compound cut that brings multiple body lines into play. Also just keep going. It all works out in the end.😊

      Yeah I think replacing the "whole panel" gives the best results. You'll see in next week's video 🙂
