This is my 1998 BMW E39 520i single vanos.
Engine overheated and blew a head gasket. I tried replacing the gasket but threads on my block stripped. Using a time-sert kit I repaired the threads and in this episode I'm putting it all back together.

Great job, but after many hours working, using again those old filters......there are no spares?
Filters are metal, so they can be cleaned. I'm missing one so I'll buy spares anyway.
Fantastic finish, looks incredible 😊
Thanks!
Bravo majstore! Bas me zanima zbog cega radi ovako a sve novo.
Hvala. Odmorit cu koji dan pa cu testirati sve redom. Moguce da mi nije nalego dobro neki dihtung oko usisne grane pa ulazi zrak.
Appreciate the honesty of showing the reassembly with painted components. Went through the same struggle due to layer thickness.
Yeah, I always try to be honest about my mistakes. I'm still learning too.

what engine???
M52b20
@@RestorationApprentice My e39 is m52b25 I wonder if it is possible to increase the horsepower?
@@shalvamamaiashvili9065 I guess it possible but very expensive and a lot of work hours. With different cams, manifold and a tune. The cheapest option is to try finding an used b30 or b28 engine.
@@RestorationApprentice As a professional, I ask you, is the M52B28 engine a good engine?
@@shalvamamaiashvili9065 I'm no expert but single vanos M52B28 is regarded as one of the best BMW engines.
Looks fantastic, well done mate. Hope be doing this to my K-jet soon too ✌️
Thank you!
Nice video❤
Thank you!
i'm new on your chanel, watching you from france. Very glad to find your videos, great job and looking forward to the next. Thanks for the share !
Thank you!
Good to see you back Master :)
Good to be back!
Dang, that’s a lot of hydraulic lifters! 😂 Nice trick with the nylon strap to keep them in place during installation. I could almost feel your anxiety when torquing the head down, seems like the stud treads are holding up though. Great work!
Luckily I reused old ones. I don't even want to imagine the cost od that many lifters. I had a better trick with magnets and a thin metal rod but I lost my magnests haha Yeah, I was stressing hard, but they appear to work fine, which is a relief.
Armin, nice to see you back again! Hope to see some additional updates on this as well as the 924.
Thank you for watching Jeff. Yeah, I'm working on a few videos at the moment. Next few will be 924 videos.
I can see up and down scratches at the bottom of the cylinder. Is that ok as long as you can't feel them?
@@TravisRummer I think that as long as you can't feel them with your nail, it's OK.
@@RestorationApprentice thank you, that's what I thought.
Good work, thanks, If you can help me, I am looking for the formula for Zinc nickel plating.
Thank you for watching but this was bought as a full kit with everything that you need for plating.
why no more parts? :(
Didn't finish it yet due to other projects, but definitely will do. One final part.
So ive been browsing hoping to find someone who applies sealant to the halves. I cant seem to keep mine from leaking. Im doing mine on a benz but you and i donit exactly the same way and i also get my kits from missing.parts.
Yeah, definitely put some sealant on it if it leaks.
перебираю сейчас такой на вольво 760 b28e/ видео очень пригодилось
Thanks!
Great job done
Thank you!
I’m doing a restoration on my 1978 924. Thank you for doing this so I can follow along
Thank you for watching!
Hi what did you torque the crossmember nuts back up too , thanks John
Sorry for the late reply, I didn't put it back on yet. If you still need it, I can look up the torque in my manual?
Hi, great video. Please, why did you yellow passivate the material while it was already zinc platted. Thank you
Thanks. Just for gold look, I like it.
I want to contact you. I have a problem with the E39 engine
Sorry for the super late reply, you can contact me on Instagram and I'll try to help if I can.
The pin on the gear is it pressed in ?
amazing ! Where can we get the set 43:06 ?
as well as the plungers ? 43:25
@@martingoelen5431 These are no longer available, I belive. I got them at frazerpart
@@RestorationApprentice thanks you. Didn't find theme anywhere. Restored mine. Btw, do you know for the 20 degrees to the brake mounting if it's based on the right or left side ? (I mean, for example, for the left caliper cylinder, do you have to align it with the left-hand side of the mounting ?)
👍🏻
The clip and pins you got them from Autodoc too? have partnumbers? (seems out of stock now). made mine yellow too.
I got them from Frazerpart.com but they are out of stock now there too.
Really? Just change the engine? 🤔😏 Here's how a M52 is rebuilt in Malaysia folks: m.czcams.com/video/fm3SchhT_jU/video.html
Yeah, I'm looking for a new engine.
Hello! How did you figure out the head gasket was blown? What kind of symptoms did you see? Awesome video series!
Thank you for watching! It was overheated and started rouning rough. I also found oil inside my cooling system.
@@RestorationApprentice Thank you very much for your reply kind Sir. I sincerely wish you good luck with all your projects! I'll be looking forward to watch them!
already tested it ? I am wondering if it leaks witout the sealant
Not yet. If you don't want to potentially pull it apart for the second time , just put the sealant. I see no harm in it.
Did it seal ok without the sealant on the ,idle plate. I’ve just ordered the same rebuild kit for my 5 cylinder so I’m keen to know. Will be using this video for reference
I havn't tested it jet. I'm working on rebuilding the engine now.
@@RestorationApprentice I’m gonna do mine when the kit comes. Got a ongoing issue that once the car has been driven for 20 minutes it goes all jerky and revs go all over the place. Tested fuel pressures had my WUR rebuilt. Only thing I’ve not done is the metering head
This is what can normally happens when those m52 and m54 engines overheating, they normally not blowing always a head gasket, they simply just pulls a headbolts or two out of the block!
yep!
What are the dimensions of the large pieces? simple plans would be awesome.
Sorry for the late reply. I'm super busy these days, if I catch some time, I'll measure it.
Great as well.
Thanks
Like for the gloves..
Condition after zinc platting is beautiful
Glad you like it
Great. Looks like a new one ))
Thank you very much!
Отличная работа .
Thanks!
خوبی خیلی عالی mhnazazad ok
Thanks!
Be careful wearing gloves near spinning machines, the glove can get caught up and it can pull you in really quickly for a lot more damage than the gloves protect you from!
Thanks.
What did you spray it with
WD40, but any spray will work as the idea is to cool it down quickly after the heat.
very good series and good job! great video
Thanks!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
What lube / grease product did you use to grease the middle plunger? thank you
Any kind of thin oil, like sawing machine oil.
Big likes!!!
Thanks!
Could it be possible to damage/warp the cylinder head if you torchthe bolt too much?
Not really.... bolt takes most of the heat and it's just a small spot on a cylinder head.
Makes me sick and pissed off too see some amateur off a complete idiot use that amount off RTV and uses way way way more places than it ever should be used on those areas and almost destroyes the engine with it if it got loose and got in both the coolant system and in the head.... hope that morron never get to touch at least these beautiful timeless and classic E39ns ever agian..!! And as far as the very sad situation with the head bolt nr 2 goes, i would try the cheepest and easiest way out first and try the time serts if the bolt thread whole in the block is not to be saved, before buying a new block or engine 👍 good luck and otherwise lovely car and colour!💯 havent had a m52b20 since my first e39 that i had from 2015 to 2019 but i sure miss it 😵
Thanks! And I agree with you!
Amazing info from your videos , will help me in restoring mine
Glad to hear it!
