My three grandchildren have some butterfly livestock arriving any day now, so this video will show them what they will be able to do in a few weeks - namely, release more botterflies into the wild! 😀

Somebody, around 1924 - I've often wondered who - arranged that British Parlophone would issue selected 'Hot' material from their U.S. affiliate, OKeh. This wasn't unique, as regards 'jazz'; Parlophone was but one label (that happened to be British), among a huge family of Odeon labels, who issued vast swathes of ethnic recordings over more than a century of activity. This is a 1949 UK Parlophone disc of "The Blues are Brewin'" from the film 'New Orleans'. Harry Parry's Radio Sextet, with vocal by Dinah Kaye. The sound is fuzzy even though I have a phono preamplifier dedicated to 78 rpm discs. It's just that EMI was rather tired and stretched after WWII; it took them some time to get back into their stride.

As far as valve clearence goes. Set them wide. Run the engine on a load to get it nice and hot. Stop the engine and measure them again before it cools down. This will give you an idea of how much they tighten up between cold and hot. The rest of the cap is to allow for the valves wearing out between services. If its just a show engine then you can set them on the tight side to quieten it a bit.

An old NAD 3020. Must've had it for 40 years. 😀 The MSS heads don't take a lot of driving; many years ago, John R T Davies drew me a circuit using a single EL84 valve (aka 6BQ5) to drive an MSS head. It's only rated at 4 Watts. Of course, there will be less distortion with a higher power amp idling along. IIRC the 3020 was 20W per channel. Using a stereo amp for cutting a mono disc is convenient, because one channel can drive the head & the other chanel can be used as a monitor. All the best, Norman. P.S. The big MSS mono amplifier used push-pull EL34s.

Dear Mr Field, Hi, I am a new fan of your channel. Recently, I have had the luck to come across a WW2-era MSS Recording Lathe. I believe it is somewhat related to the restored MSS lathe in your channel, as well as the "son of BBC midget" in this video: czcams.com/video/9p_dIMPyPtQ/video.html It is in fairly good condition for its age. It powers up and the lathe rotates. It lacks a stylus but the cutting head looks in good shape (at least externally). I'd love to get it up and running to record some of my own music with it (1940s blues stuff and 1980s synth stuff are my specialties), but unfortunately I lack the technical chops to reckon with its internal workings. Specifically, I am looking for some kind of solution to have a 33 and/or 45 rpm option installed. I don't mind bringing the unit out to you and I would, of course, pay you handsomely for whatever help you may be able to offer in bringing this wonderful piece of history into the modern age. Please feel free to send me a msg here or on my channel Many thanks 🙂 Alexander Nye

Hello Norman, your tube radio is very interesting. But did you know, that a tube has an internal diode? The germanium diode is not needed. At this place there was normally the grid leak combination, a resistor of 1 mega ohm and a capacitor of 220 picofarad - these are todays units. The grid leak helped the internal diode. Cheap radios like the german Loewe OE333 had no grid leak. And second note, the typical radio in the 1920s was a regenerative receiver with a tickler coil. The chaep approach was to move the small tickler coil away from the tuning coil or move it closer. Closer was more loudness. Later another variable capacitor was used to control regeneration.

Hi there. Sorry, I''ve never seen the 1931 film, and it seems not to be on-line. However, the film is based on a book published in 1925, and the hero - or anti-hero? - begins in Kansas City as a young man. So that would well put him back to 1910, which is when Grizzly Bear Rag was published. The tune was extremely popular in Europe as well as the U.S. My grandfather (born 1882) had the music and would often play it, so I have had it in my head all my life! 🙂 No less than 15 versions were recorded in the U.K. & more inEurope. Hi there. Yes, cylinder records - at least most of them after about 1900 - have standard groove pitches. 100 grooves per inch (2.54cm) playing for around 2 minutes at 160 rpm are the earlier ones. Later, Edison made wax cylinders with 200 grooves per inch, so doubling the playing time. They were very fragile (or al least the ones you find today are!😀), so he then made them from a blue celluloid type of material - the blue one in the video is one of those, and it does play for a long time! They were much more robust than the wax 4-minute cylinders. Best wishes to you and your family, Norman.

Why do you write that the singer is Steve Porter? His history with Nicole record is interesting though

Thanks for the great upload it’s obviously a very rare disc. I love this song from the Billy Murray version.

Ah... the name on this double-sided issue is a pseudonym for Steve Porter. The D- series are couplings from earlier single-sided Nicoles, many of which (if not all) have been given different artiste credits, for some reason. I should have mentioned that! Best wishes and a Happy New Year in 2024! Cheers, Norman.

Happy new years and thanks for replying. There are quite a few harry taylor records from around 1903 so do you think they are all really sung by Steve porter or just the ones on Nicole?

H'mmm - I looked at the double sided Nicole D-197 again for the first time since I uploaded it 12 years ago! 😀 Was suprised that the other side is by Pete Hampton - who was of course, a real singer. So why they left that side with his real name, and changed Steve Porter to Harry Taylor, is quite a puzzle! I must look in the Nicole listing when I get some spare time. Best regards, Norman.

Must be great finding this especially on the very rare Exo label, they even issued (rather reissued) Jack Judge’s recording of Tipperary which would be a lifelong task to find though. I sent you an email some time ago (the one listed on your wonderful site) and just wanted ask if you’d be interested in adding a German version (original one probably) of the “Aga” label, this one being called “Aga Platte”. Of course on your website, merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Thanks for writing! Yes please - sorry I didn't reply before, but would be very happy to put up a German AGA disc on my website. Many thanks for the offer. AGA is such a short-lived record label! The original Jack Judge record of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" is so scarce because Edison Bell Winner had already issued the song, by another artiste, before it became so popular - but am sure you know this already. 😀 Best reagrds to you & yours, Norman. For anyone else interested, please go to www.early78s.uk and then to Winner.

@@bixanorak No worries at all! It’s going to be a bit until I’m able to make a label scan though, but I will try ASAP. Thanks for accepting the offer :).

Thanks! Yes, it's one of those real 'extreme' disc records... Where on earth do you file it in your record collection?? 🤔 Have a good Christmas - cheers, Norman.

@@bixanorak well, I don't have a massive record collection so I'll probably not put it in any specific place, I'm just interested in old records and interesting records because I'm 13 and I have been raised listening to vinyls and CDs. I have just started collecting vinyls and I'm trying to get strange formats. I am currently after a 11" Merry Christmas!

Wow - that's great, thanks! Still tinkering with it here... need to warm up the polycarbonate disc to maybe 35°C, coat it with thin spray of WD40, and have a heated cutting stylus... One day will have a major campaign on it! Of course, I should have used a modern recording, which would have sounded far better anyway 😀Cheers, Norman.
