DOIN' THE NEW LOCKDOWN - 1928 Jack Pettis up to date!

  • This is the 1928 tune 'Doin' the New Low Down'- which was a new sort of dance at the time. For fun, me & some friends have been converting & re-titling old time tunes to have Covid references - a kind of 'survival factor'. It all helps to keep our spirits up in this ominous time - at least I hope you think so! Take care, & stay safe. Covid WILL be beaten & driven out; it's just going to take a lot longer than we thought. 8^(

    Very droll, Norman! Exactly what we needed. It's about the best version that there was of 'Doin' The New Low Down'. Stay well, and all the best for 2021.

      Hi There. Yes, siree! It's all going fine here, as I hope it is with your and yours? We've kept a low profile, had all the jabs &c.,,= so are hoping for the best. True, I haven't put up much stuff lately, but there are a couple in the pipeline. The first is an Edison Bell pick-up and arm from about 1931-32, which makes a nice sound & was quite possibly designed by the brilliant young Paul Voigt. Alas, EB wound up their radio & gramophone division in 1933 - the Great Depression, of course. As you know, the discs staggered along a little further, of course. Take care, and thanks for writing! Best regards to you & yours, Norman.

    You mentioned it was a bit fuzzy during the video? I also use Diamond Cut, and found that tinkering with their "narrow crackle" filter can wipe out what I call the "78 shellacle crackle". Also the "De-Clipper" filter, used selectively on loud passages with worn grooves, helps soften those blows of distortion to your ears.
    Glad to see you're keeping on, safe n healthy n all, and that 'reworked titles' idea looks fun!!

      Hi there & thanks for writing. This side was played 'as-is' with a Stanton 500 cartridge & a .0035 TE Stanton stylus, wch I think are rather scarce these days. I use a home-brew pre-amp & power amp - which I ought to describe in a video, I guess? It has the 'flat top end' which Western Electric recording needs. It wasn't de-crackled (if needed, I use Izotope RX4 for that), but as I said, I did lift the top end a bit in DC10, because the disc, which is in pretty good shape, came over quite 'flabby' in sound. Most odd. Also, I need a new sound card for my PC - so I can only judge quality by what the record sounds like in the living room. In the work room upstairs, I'm just using the on-board PC sound card for the time being, and they are generally regarded as inferior to a dedicated sound card. Don't wprry - I'll get it sorted in the end! Cheers, Norman.

    Hi how's it going! Have you ever thought to try and recording using a subharmonic synthesizer should work well for 78s, really bring out that depth what they do lack in the recording on the record. Not expensive a dbx 120a is about £200 second-hand should really bring some life to the recordings. Nice to see you well and kicking haven't been getting notifications I thought I'd check see where you are. Yes the otoscope reading of 100hz and below down to 24 Hz one octave below will carry the signal really boost up that bottom end give it some gravitas subharmonic synthesizer

    It's always a good day when a Norman Field video arrives at the door! I noticed there's "VE" printed at the top and bottom of the label. What does it stand for? "Victor...??" Thanks Mr. Field!

    • @bixanorak
      @bixanorak  Před 3 lety

      Hi there! Well, VE we assume to be the logo to distinguish the use of the Western Electric sound recording system. 'Victor Electric'? Actually, I dunno! But they also used 'Orthophonic' as a by-line, just as Columba used 'Viva-Tonal' for their Western Electric recordings. If you google like '1925 - Western Electric sound recording' you'll get lots of hits & will soon know more than anyone else about it, including your humble servant, Norman! 8^) But seriously, take care in this dreadful pandemic!

      Alas, yes! A sad day indeed. Also, Bill Dean-Myatt the discographer died on 7th January. He had worked on ethnic music for many years, but may be remembered by the discography in 'Bix- Man & Legend' by Evans & Sudhalter in 1974. Bill was credited on the title page. We shall remember all these people - we learned so much from them, and will preserve & promote it! Best (but sad, regards), Norman.

    Dear Mr. Field,
    I do watch your video's for a long time, and I really enjoy them!
    I''m from the Netherlands. Despite I'm only 20 years old, I do love the 1920s -1955 period extremely. 78 rpm records, charleston & swing dancing, furniture etc. For me personally it's more than a collecting hobby. I even wear mostly original 1930s and 40s clothing almost every day.
    I've got a question too actually. I've have a 78rpm record cutter myself. Its currently in restauration by myself. The impedance of the cutter head is +/- 250 / 300 Ohms. Do you have any idea what kind of tube / solid state amplifier I could use to drive it? And how many Watts do I need to get a reasonable volume?
    Best regards,
    Nathan.

    • @bixanorak
      @bixanorak  Před 3 lety +1

      OK - & best of luck with your project. Do you know the approximate year of manufacture? 250 - 300 Ohms would be classed as medium impedance. Heads for use with valves (vacuum tubes) would be much higher, like 1,000 or 2,000 Ohms because valves were high impedance (Hi-Z) devices, on both the input and output sides. Solid state amplifiers are of course low impedance devices, and this makes life pretty easy for us today; because it's very easy to re-wind a broken Hi-Z coil to Lo-Z. Damn difficult to wind a 1000 Ohm coil with tiny thin wire... but easy to wind with rather thicker wire to say 10 or 12 Ohms. A modern solid state amp will work quite happily into 10 Ohms. It 'thinks' the cutting head is just a loudspeaker! Also, most of the old-time cutting heads don't actually require much power to drive them! 3 or 4 watts is usually fine *. They used to work from a single 6V6 valve, or later, even an EL84 - which you, in the Netherlands will know as a classic small Philips valve that can put out 3, maybe 4 Watts easily! I would say, when you have restored your cutting head, and even though it's quite Hi-Z, try it on a solid state amplifier. AFAIK, It's OK to drive a higher impedance from a lower impedance source, though it won't be very efficient, or give true sound. Still, you should feel the cutting point vibrating if you hold it between thumb & forefinger. It doesn't have to vibrate very much!
      Hope this is of help. Let us know how you get on, OK? Cheers, Norman.
      * They would use higher power amps like 2 x EL34s, because the distortion would then be very low. The distortion figure is not really important while you're getting an old piece of equipment working again... 8^)
