  • This is the second uploading of this video. On the first, within hours, some comments appeared on it, which were pointed out by an alert visitor as being malware - and if anybody clicked on them (there were three, all the same) - something bad would happen. Accordingly, I took the video down, and with it, hopefully, the malware. So here it is again, and this time one hopes it will be OK? 8^)
Originally, this video was based on a request from a subscriber, who wanted to know how to wire a stereo. pickup cartridge to play vertical cut records.
This video shows how to do that - it’s quite simple.
Then, we go on to show an alternative & rather more versatile method of playing vertical cut discs, so that we can use all our different cartridges & styli to optimise playing, rather than dedicate a single cartridge & stylus to that task.
There is also a related video, an outreach from this one, which goes into rather more detail about making the single transistor phase inverter. See it at: • Vertical cut disc reco...
This is for those who may not be confident about working even with basic electronic components, and to show how easy, cheap, and effective simple things can be.

    Fabulous!
I wish you were nearby so that I could be a fly on the wall in your laboratory. Not any old fly, rather a pesky fly asking questions.

My very first question as you showed wiring the cartridge was "Uhh, phase?"... then you did a brilliant job of addressing that. Thank you!

Greetings Norman. I habe watched your recent videos with my usual alacrity and am so pleased to see you back on our screens helping to alleviate the drear of lockdown. Please keep the vids coming and please keep safe. Best wishes.

You are a genius! I was able to do what you said and hear Pathe discs and Edison discs so much clearer! Already order a new headshell and cartridge for my normal 78s.

The shure method of taking from the two negatives actually puts the coils in series, back to back, thus out of phase. This doubles the suggested load impedance, but also does double the voltage, but there is no damping of out of phase lateral information. The reversing one channel method maintains impedance and output voltage, but is more effective at damping lateral info. Out of phase info on the other coil presents an effective short, but in-phase info presents a high impedance, so the coils are not actually "shorting" or loading each other. The one transistor method is very effective, but does present a slight phase shift and added noise, not of any concern for this source material. Opamps may be used, one in phase, one out of phase with live switching of the phase of one channel using a single pole switch. A pot with ends to the feedback dump resistor terminal (negative feedback) wiper to ground, can be used to balance the two channels for most effective cancellation.

Well yes. alternatively to invert one of the channels from the cartridge by swapping either the red and green or blue and white leads over.
Or don't bother, play it in stereo (out of phase), record it in audacity and then invert one of the channels, then mono it and save the file. If you want to listen t it again. play the file instead of the record. :)

Thank you for this very important video! This is really a genius idea. Just a short technical note: if you would like to further improve the sound quality of your phase inverter circuit, use tantal capacitors instead of the electrolytic capacitors. The very best would be to use non polarized foil capacitors, if availble. Only the German WIMA manufacturer offers non polarized 10yF foil capacitors in size for circuit boards to my knowledge, so far. Another thing is, that 10yF is electrically quite a big value, and it could be a little bit difficult for high frequency's to pass through. A check with a sinus generator and a oscilloscope would give a answer to that. To overcome this problem, just add a parallel small capacitor of say 10nF or 47nF to the big 10yF capacitor. Electrically, the circuit "sees" the wanted amount of capacitance, but for the signal time to pass through, only the small capacitor counts, improving the high frequency's response and the impulse of bass. It also helps to use 1% metal film resistors, instead of noisy 10% carbon resistors. Carbon resistors have beige bodies, metal film resistors have blue or turquoise body colour. I know what I'm talking about, I restored many (english say)valve (americans say)tube amps... It would be very interesting if you could share your experience with different stylus sizes for playback 78's and vertical cut disc and phonograph cylinders. The right stylus size for the right application is crucial to the best possible sound reproduction. Many people are not aware that even old "normal groove" 45rpm singles should not be played with the 12micron (0,47mil) stylus, used for microgroove stereo 33prm LP's. These mono 45rpm singles should be played back with a 25micron (0,98mil) stylus. For the shellac records, the normal guideline is: records from 1960 to 1945 stylus size of 65microns (2,55mil) /records from 1945 to 1930 a stylus size of 75microns (2.95mil) and the old acoustic records a stylus of about 90microns (3,54mil), the very old Berliner or Zonophone records may use a proper stylus size of 120microns (4,72mil). How do you know about the right playback speed for these historical recordings? The keynote a1=440Hz was used officially set in 1940 and before it was probably lower. Most modern tuners for musical instruments work for keynote a=440Hz. Here's a video of a American sound technician who's specialized in doing dubbings of historical recordings:czcams.com/video/z_GyYapvkcw/video.html. Very interesting to see how he adjusts the record out of the spindle to get the wobble out and the trying of different stylus sizes. Thanks again for this video and best regards from Switzerland, bluearcturus

Hi there - yes, it was up before, maybe 10 days ago, but I took it down because somebody said the 'Wanna be friends?' comment was some sort of malware & if you click on it, it's bad. I see it's back, under Misty. Am not sure what to do! It's also appeared on the supplementary video to this one. The question is, are these comments capable harbouring malware? Is iy a manifestation, say,m of a virus on my own PC? I shall be researching it online, urgently. Cheers, Norman.

@@bixanorak These are posted by some robot that seems to run on accounts that have been hacked in some way, or else they are new accounts entered in some fraudulent manner, since most seem to have a "join date" of about 2008. I strongly suspect that there are two forces at work. There is probably a robot that is cracking CZcams accounts that have very weak passwords, and then handing them off to a second robot that is making these "wanna be friends" posts.
It's not clear to me the point of these things. Browsing the internet brings up a lot of speculation of them either artificially increasing hits on videos due to the robot posts, or somehow artificially making the hacked account more important due to the number of posts on other videos. There is also the widespread belief that these are somehow trap posts and touching them will somehow compromise your own account. This later point is demonstrably false.
To the first point, their posting comments to your video will increase *your* hit count, not theirs. So what would be the benefit to the robot in the compromised account?
To the second point, the CZcams database might notice the account is making a lot of posts, but since they never have any recent videos (and seldom have any videos at all), and they aren't monetized, and the posts aren't increasing the views on the few videos available, again, what is the point for the robot?
The final point is pretty demonstrably false. Clicking on one of those links will not give the robot any information that it can't get already. Subscribing to the hacked account might in some way benefit the robot, but it still won't compromise your account, at least not directly. It might give the robot an account name to pass back to the hacking robot, and that could try to brute force into your account. But the robot that can post on your videos can also read the comments on your videos, so already has access to the names of everyone else posting. So touching the compromised account is not going to hurt you any more than merely existing hurts you.
What I do when I see these pop up is click the dots to the right and select "report", and then report it as "unwanted commercial spam". CZcams promptly makes the post vanish from my sight, and I assume might do something to trigger a review that will quash the compromised account.
As an account owner you can also block that particular account from posting to your videos, and you can remove posts you don't like, including these.
Hope that is of some help.
