  • Scrooge wakes up after his dream! Bransby Williams (1870 - 1961) takes the part of Scrooge. The recording was originally issued on Edison Bell 'Bell Disc' and was recorded around September 1912. Edison Bell also made 'badged' dscs for clients. The earlier ones are quite scarce... EXO, as you can see, was only sold by one department store in Padiham, Lancashire, so they are not found all that often. Fortunately, this one is in quite good shape. Just to add to the general festivities, early Edison Bell discs need to be played around 83 rpm! 😀 Have a good Christmas 2023!! đŸŽ…đŸŒđŸŽ…đŸŒ Cheers, Norman. P.S. Thanks to PIXABAY fot free images & sounds, and Williams images from Wikipedia under Collective Commons.

Many thanks for writing. There's more stuff on the shelf - ranging from British 1929 General Election speeches, to dozens of sides of Morse Code tuition 78s! (I must tell you that the latter are not for the faint hearted.) Best regards to you & yours & have lavely Christmas holiday. Cheers, Norman.

Yes - it's been a long time, but we're still here! The concept of 'recitations' or 'famous dramatic speeches' given on stage, was apparently very widespread, certainly up to quite recent times. I don't think you'd get very far these days with that sort of thing? Times change... I played a 1950s 10" LP of 'Red Riding Hood', narrated by a top guy (Richard Baker, a famous BBC announcer) to my 6-year-old grand-daughter, and after 3 or 4 minutes she said: "Grandad, plase take this off. It's old-fashioned & boring". Oh well! All the more reason to keep these much earlier recitations? 😀 All the best for Christmas, Norman.

Thanks! I just quickly put up the other side for you - just the audio. Go to early78s.uk/listen-to-early-78s/ and scroll right down to the bottom. This is another of Bransby Williams' standard repertoire - again Dickens, for 'A Tale of Two Cities'. Cheers, Norman.

Must be great finding this especially on the very rare Exo label, they even issued (rather reissued) Jack Judge’s recording of Tipperary which would be a lifelong task to find though. I sent you an email some time ago (the one listed on your wonderful site) and just wanted ask if you’d be interested in adding a German version (original one probably) of the “Aga” label, this one being called “Aga Platte”. Of course on your website, merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Thanks for writing! Yes please - sorry I didn't reply before, but would be very happy to put up a German AGA disc on my website. Many thanks for the offer. AGA is such a short-lived record label! The original Jack Judge record of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" is so scarce because Edison Bell Winner had already issued the song, by another artiste, before it became so popular - but am sure you know this already. 😀 Best reagrds to you & yours, Norman. For anyone else interested, please go to www.early78s.uk and then to Winner.

@@bixanorak No worries at all! It’s going to be a bit until I’m able to make a label scan though, but I will try ASAP. Thanks for accepting the offer :).
