  • Somebody, around 1924 - I've often wondered who - arranged that British Parlophone would issue selected 'Hot' material from their U.S. affiliate, OKeh. This wasn't unique, as regards 'jazz'; Parlophone was but one label (that happened to be British), among a huge family of Odeon labels, who issued vast swathes of ethnic recordings over more than a century of activity. But the 'Keith, Prowse' series of large-label 'Purple Parlophones' has been legendary among British Hot Music fans for nearly 100 years. Here is just one side from the set. I put it up because I was prowling around youtube, and found that this side appared several times, but without the opportunity for comment. I thought it deserved another upload, where comments were possible. Wishing you all the best in 2023, Norman.

Thanks - yes, there are more elaborate novelty piano solos, but this one is very nice, and the guys in the band are mostly pretty obscure apart from the leader. All the best, Norman.

While I certainly enjoy music of the early 20th century, I am a man of my time. This music was just a fading memory when I was born. Even the oldies stations of the day were playing 50s music (I am early gen-X). About the closest to this music playing on the radio was Sunday morning with Frank Sinatra or Lawence Welk and even old Frankie is a different sound.
Still, even though it's not my first choice, it's nice to have it available to enjoy occasionally.

There are several of these early Parlophones, many of which are already on CZcams... I ought to make a list so that they can be checked out... something for a rainy day! Best regards to you & yours, Norman.

Thanks and all the best to you & your family. The other side is a piano solo by Hersal Thomas - it's already on YT at czcams.com/video/2WlaM4MgDGE/video.html . There are other versions too. Cheers, Norman.

Thanks a lot! Have always had a soft spot for the piano novelty. There's a super late acoustic British Columbia of Zez Confrey's 'Nickel in the Slot' as a xylophone solo - although there are dozens of piano versions on CZcams, a xylophone verson probably won't go amiss? 😀

Ah - the 'Novelty' pieces are rather neglected these days - let's see if we can dig something out that isn't already on YT! Best regards & thanks, Norman.

@@bixanorak I'm assembing videos of transfers and restorations (done on Diamond Cut), though haven't uploaded any yet. Although I cross many eras and genres, my first bunch are mostly from the 1920s:
      --Healy & Cross-Come On Spark Plug! (1923)
      --International Novelty Orchestra-Cuckoo (1927)
--The Rt. Hon. W.L. Mackenzie King (Prime Minister Of Canada)-The Message Of The Carillon (1927)
--Ed Gallagher and Al Shean-"Positively, Mr Gallagher?" and "Absolutely, Mr. Shean!" (both sides 1921, and Al Shean was an uncle to the Marx brothers!)
--Nat M. Wills-No News Or What Killed The Dog (1916 disc reissue of 1905 recording)
      --Joseph C. Smith's Orchestra--Me-ow (1918)
      Best regards in return, Darren

Many thanks for the presonnel! At that time in Chicago, OKeh used agents to bring in bands to record for tnem. Besides Clarence Jones, there were also two sides by Albert Wynn : 'When', and 'That Creole Band' on OKeh 8350. I can't remember the otger band, but most of the musicians in those 3 bands made rather few other records. I must look for the other band! Cheers, Norman.

I really like their graphic for the label. I wonder how to interpret it? "Gramophones are Expensive"?

    • @bixanorak
      @bixanorak  Před rokem

Thanks for writing. Gramophones came in all prices - and indeed, most of them were expensive! But the £ sign here is - or was - the letter "L" in old script, and standing for Lindström - this was a German company that made gramophones & then records & were so successful that they built a record pressing factory in Hertford, pressing Odeon, Jumbo & other labels. Alas for everybody, the Great War broke out in 1914, & it was taken over by the Board of Trade, & put under the control of our Columbia records. Lindström re-surfaced in the UK in ~1923 as Parlophone, and (now owned by Columbia) was able to draw from various related Odeon companies in Argentina (tangos by Roberto Firpo) and OKeh in the USA - all sorts of dance, jazz & even blues material was issued in the UK as early as 1923! And - oh yes! Eventually, the Beatles originally appeared on Parlophone LPs, complete with the £ sign, though without the horn gramophone behind it!! All the very best to you & yours. Cheers, Norman.
